A Statement on the Standards of No Quarter [Update]

First and foremost, we will not tolerate any comments that are in any way racist. Thankfully — despite what our critics say — those comments have been very few and very far between. As Larry told you, in one instance only, we contacted the Secret Service to report a threat against Barack Obama. That involved ONE person ONLY. We were very impressed with the Secret Service’s attention to the matter, and their frequent follow-up calls and e-mails to ensure they had all relevant information about that ONE person.
UPDATE: Similarly, we will not permit sexist remarks here, even though the mainstream media regularly make sexist statements without regard for their impact on women.
We hold that same standard for the articles published here. There have been a couple instances when articles have slipped through our standards review, and gone up. Those have been immediately removed whenever there’s any question, particularly that would in any way be construed as racist. Even when it was not the writer’s intent in any way. We find racism, even the suggestion of it, abhorrent and will not permit it on this blog.
Secondly, we tolerate dissent on this blog. We believe in the realized dream of “free speech” in the United States of America. That said, we do not tolerate dissent that turns into nasty attacks, repetitive attack comments that are published several times in several posts, and personal attacks on the writers who are BRAVE enough to publish their works here.
Thirdly, we have ZERO tolerance for comments that attempt to expose personal information about any of our writers or those who comment here. To those vicious and stupid enough to do this: You are placing real people’s lives in danger, in ways you cannot know (and, sadly, do not appear to care about). As I said in a post last week, if anything happens to those you are trying to expose, you may have real blood on your hands.
Above all, we believe in civilized discourse.
We can comment here like the ladies and gentlemen that we wish our favored political candidates to be.
Jeralyn at TalkLeft stated a view that is important to quote here:
[T]here’s a difference between expressing disagreement with politicians and voicing displeasure with some of their actions and comments, — and even with questioning their sincerity or suitability for office — all of which are okay — and with filling the comment threads with hateful character attacks.
