I do care what the First Lady wears–if she wants to wear shorts do it in private. If she’s trying to score points with he common people that ship has sailed long ago after her husband called us commoners, “bitter and clinging to our guns and religion.” Right now she’s just sticking it to this “mean”country that she wasn’t so proud of her entire adult life. She’s playing to the non-taxpaying, entitlement junkies that voted for this in the WH and who have their hands out eagerly awaiting their mortgage, gas and food money.

I truly think she is a disaster as a FLOTUS. It’s good she’s having fun with her daughters, but it doesn’t say much about how they will grow up. Will they learn from her to do something constructive with their time and talent.

I remember Chelsea during the primary. I remember Hillary’s trip with Chealse while Hillary was First Lady. What a remarkable woman Chelsea has become. I point back to the post recently about Hillary’s trip to Africa and how the people remembered her from her trip there as First Lady.

I don’t care what she wears, but it IS objectionable if she is showing her nipples. And look at the photo and see the contrast to the serious expressions of the men in uniform, how it shows respect for our country. What does her expression show? “I am off for a good time at your expense, suckers!”

Vanity Fair puts Mechelle on it’s best dressed list. Designers are falling all over themselves talking about her fabulous sense of style.

What style? Her inauguration gown made of of toilet paper? Her swearing in ensemble with unfinished seams that looked like she whipped it up on her Singer in Home Ec class?

Now she gets off Air Force One looking as if she’s going to clean out a couple of dumpsters with a fire hose and a bottle of PineSol.

She doesn’t have style. She doesn’t give a shit. She’s just like her husband who does what ever the hell he wants. Laura Bush was no fashion plate, but she didn’t aspire to being a fashion icon.

Comfortable with her body? Don’t make me laugh. When she packs on 50 pounds over the next four years we’ll get lectured about how black culture values big women. And how whitey doesn’t understand what “back” is.

What’s funny to me about the picture is the incongruity between the two US Servicemen standing rigidly at attention and the ultra-casual Michelle & daughter. It just doesn’t fit; it doesn’t look right. She shouldn’t appear dressed like that and walk in between two servicemen in full uniform standing at attention. I think it looks silly and undignified.

Designers are falling all over themselves? What do you expect? Look at the designers…they’re like a pack of wolves looking for the next meal. They’ve foisted upon us skirts too short to be able to sit comfortably in, layers of blouses and vests,all of which seem to be either too small or too short, jewelry jangling up the kazoo, and shoes with heels so high, soles so thick that insurance companies should cancel the wearer’s accident insurance.
They know nothing about refinement, class and style, and they never will.

The Physician’s Committee for Responsible Medicine and other groups have been fighting hard for a reform in the school lunch programs for that reason. The Farm Bill is always the major obstacle. Too hard to explain right now. But there is a bill in the House now again trying to make lunch rooms serve more nutritious lunches to the kids. MEchelle could have worked on getting media attention for that effort, but I didn’t hear a word from her.

I commented earlier this week that I was offended that MO was on anyone’s best dressed list after seeing the above pic. It would be ridiculous to expect her to look cover-girl ready 24/7, but as FLOTUS she ought to at least try to look presentable for photo-ops. Especially since she has so much help at taxpayers’ expense.

My family is not wealthy, but we were always expected to display good manners and and be presentable. (One of my gran’s favorite sayings was “Breeding will tell.”) I don’t even go out to get the mail dressed like Mo is there. I know I sound terribly catty, but it’s infuriating when I open my favorite mags only to be told I should dress like Michelle. I agree that Vogue, Elle and the others have gone too far in forcing her bad taste on us and telling us it’s golden.

I think she just has a really, really fat big toe.

It really isn’t fair to compare Michelle to Jackie. Jackie grew up in a wealthy family and was used to meeting with high-powered people. She had all of the advantages that went with that. That would include knowing how to plan a formal dinner etc.

That said, I’ve never agreed that Michelle had any fashion sense. It may be nice that her dress is ordinary but her position is extraordinary. Therefore, as with any other job, she should dress the part.

I was skeptical, so I googled and by golly you’re right! Her nose is definitely more refined and there are other noticeable differences from old pix. What a hypocrite MO is!

We don’t pay them to be ordinary. We pay them to be at the very least appropriate on the international stage. At the very least not vulgar in comparison to every other female representative of their country. We don’t expect her to favorably compare to Mrs. Sarkozy or the Queen. After all, they have generations of practice to guide them…just appropriate would be good enough since we can’t possibly expect more.

And btw, Queen Elizabeth is often mocked for being dull and conservative. She is, however, appropriate, her clothes beautifully made in quality fabrics. Princess Di had a learning curve too but soon dazzled the world with her taste. She took her job seriously. Compare some of the pictures of her when she was visiting sites where they were disabling land mines with MEchille getting off that plane. Ick. MEchille goes from bad to worse.

I accessorize the the outfit a bit differently. For one thing, I don’t have expensive shoes and sunglasses. But I do add the following when I wear the exact same shorts, top and overshirt as our first lady wears in the photograph:

I wear yellow rubber gloves.
Over my arm I carry a Rubbermaid bucket with a bottle of Lestoil and a toilet brush.
I usually carry a bottle of bleach in one hand.
I wrap a cheap scarf to tie my hair back.

When do I wear this exact same outfit as Michelle Obama? When I have to clean up something really nasty from the basement sump pump, or when the garbage cans outside get filled with maggots.

You are quite correct. Her style of dress shows a lack of empathy or respect for anyone else suffering around her. Those people serving her highness are required to be in full dress uniform for appearances sake and because they have a job to do. That job is to follow protocol and show respect for the office of the presidency. She needs to do the same.

Hee! Actually, I am in the process of taking pre-requisite courses so that I can take a one year program to get a BA in nursing. I already have a BA in Biology, but it’s OLD, so I have to re-take some stuff.

I just finished summer school: Anatomy & Physiology I & II. Whew! Now I have a few weeks off until I go back to school again so I have time to hang out here.

How am I paying for it? Ain’t easy. Thank goodness my husband is still employed.

I don’t like President Obama’s leadership nor did I like what Michelle said about Hillary during the primaries but I’m not going to pile on about her so-called “fashion sense”. After all they are on a family vacation going to the Grand Canyon. I’ve been to the Grand Canyon. I saw visitors from around the world when I was there and they were for the most part dressed in “hiking clothes”, not designer suits.

America has been very hard on its first ladies. Eleanor Roosevelt was considered “plain”. Jacqueline Kennedy was considered beautiful and elegant but it didn’t save her the embarrassment of having her husband carry on with other women literally right under her nose at times. Rosalind Carter was also criticized for her lack of “fashion sense”. Nancy Reagan was quite fashion conscious but was criticized for the “beaucoup” bucks she spent on her wardrobe. Hillary Clinton was also criticized for her lack of fashion sense and then when she and Bill got fashionable haircuts they were criticized for the all the money they spent.

I think a lot of the comments about Michelle’s appearance in this photo are silly and distract from the real issues of this presidency. History will not judge Obama on his wife’s fashion sense but it will judge him on his ability to govern.

It’s interesting to talk about Michelle Obama’s clothing choices.

I loved writing about Hillary’s Purple UFO hat and matching ensemble that she wore for Bill’s innauguration.

The people, they need their amusements. If I want to write about Michelle Obama’s clothes, hair, shoes, plastic surgery, etc. I’m gonna do it.

You do realize how much is still written about Marie Antoinette’s clothing? If I had two brain cells to rub together at this late hour, I could make an argument that the way first ladies, and Michelle Obama in particular, present themselves to the public has a very important bearing on how the American Public perceives Mr. Obama’s presidency.

You’ve got a point there. I was listening to talk radio radio and couple of folks from other countries who had seen the photo called in.

They were appalled and asked how we could let our First Lady dress that way.

If appearance doesn’t matter, and it definitely does in the USA, then why not come out in a bathrobe and slippers? That’s an exaggeration but really.

How you dress when you are in the public eye says a lot about how you feel about the position you are in. If you want to dress like the average American then go home and be one. Then I really won’t care how you dress.

When you are on Air Force One you are at work. Please dress appropriately, bearing in mind you are representing an entire nation.

Well, how does the average American dress? Can anyone define “average” as in the context of “average American”. I suspect that if you were to ask the “average American person” on the street what they consider “average American dress” you would have as many different responses as the number of people that were queried.

Style and fashion are usually in the eye of the beholder. My idea of appropriate wear is not the same as my daughter’s, nor some of my friends. It also depends on “context”. And let’s face it, if Michelle Obama were to start dressing like an 18th century shepherdess like Marie Antionette was known for doing when she was playing “dress-up” or “dress-down” while the people of France were starving to death, I think our country if not the entire world would wonder what the hell is going on over here.

I take it back. You are scrubing floors for colledge. My best wishes at the hard work you are doing to accomplish your goals. That floor is gonna shine.

I believe it is more than just cheap thrills or to try to be more popular. It has been clear from the beginning of their burst onto the scene – both 0′s have gone out of their way to be ordinary, unimpressive people while immensely relishing the audiences that shower them with applause and screams of approval.

MO’s shocking casual ways reminds me of another FLOTUS, Abigail Van Buren (I believe it was) who was so disgusted with life in the WH that she hung her laundry indoors, strung throughout the WH.

I don’t think that is MO’s problem – that she is disgusted with life in the WH. Instead she relishes all the luxury afforded her by her husband’s ill-gotten position. She’s lapping it up, but tries to appear ‘cool’ like she is not effected by it. She accomplishes this by showing up in all those outrageous get-ups that she should wear behind closed doors.

Thinker, perhaps describing MO as looking like the ‘new maid’ is a bit over the line. But we are all on a slippery slope here talking about her clothes. As feminists, we have railed against that.

However, for me, this is not merely about M’s clothes. It is the message that is being delivered by her blatant, ‘I’ll do as I please regardless of what they think’. It is about disrespect for her FLOTUS position and, yes, image, as superficial as that might sound. I have no problem with her having her own style. But at that level, there are minimum standards that she should adhere to. You probably agree since M is not your favorite either.

The thing is, we “ordinary people” dress like this, but it’s when we’re hanging out in the back yard with our friends. I’m the same generation as MO and BO, and we were taught that you dress up to go on a plane. As an adult, I’m more casual on a plane than my parents taught us, but I certainly don’t wear shorts, no socks, no bra.

The Clintons used to vacation on Martha’s Vineyard, but they always stayed with friends. If you make it to HuffPo there is also a picture of her walking the dog on the WH lawns — now that is a picture worth a thousand words in terms of establishing her class or lack thereof.
