The Death of a Corvette – Open Thread

Warning! This is painful to watch and listen to for anyone who loves autos and racing. Traded in as part of the “Cash for Clunkers” program, sodium silicate solution is used to freeze up the engine of this Corvette. The death throes start about the three minute mark.

It just seems incredibly sad that we are paying for whole sale destruction, in an effort to sustain a system of auto sales and manufacturing that no longer works. Too bad they didn’t use the money as a stake for bright young minds to creatively develop sleek fuel efficient “improvements” to the old autos in the tradition and honor of America’s love affair with their cars.

I think it is a monumental waste of resources!

What are your thoughts?

  • Tess

If they HAD to do it, don’cha think it would’ve been a good idea to require people to Buy American?
Ford, for instance, still manufactures vehicles in this country.

You’re right, it’s too sad to watch. I remember back in the 50′s when cars became a part of the family and some people even named their cars. Oh, I know it’s stupid–after all, they’re only machines. But we project our better feelings into the world, and the world thereby becomes a better, friendlier place to live. This is just senseless ugly waste.

Did you hear what Miss Universe said last night?

… women have “reached the same level as men” and “we must realize that there are no longer barriers amongst us.”

Miss Universe is out of her mind!

That Donald Trump runs a real classy show.

  • Elizabeth

There should have been incentives for the
purchase of fuel-efficient vehicles made in America. …

Although I understand the goal of the program wasn’t as an economic stimulus measure to manufacturing but to remove an aging fleet and replace it with newer more efficient cars.

On the other hand, what about young or low income people buying their first car, who can’t afford a newer, more efficient one. Either the government did not consider all the ramifications or the poor are getting a raw deal once again.

  • Peggy Sue

What a sickening waste. Could be a metaphor for what’s going on throughout our entire political and economic system. Everything choking on glass but we call it “good.”

    Another green shoot exposed.

Thanks for the vid, Linda [I think :0)].

Christopher R. Knittel from the Center for the Study of Energy Markets (CSEM) has an interesting study on the relative minor positive environmental impact of the Cash for Clunkers program. Lots of taxpayers money wasted yet again. The only greening this program is accomplishing is taking the long green out of our pockets.

My love for one of my cars is such. As long as I live, where I live, with the space I have. My car, special only to me will have a home. Drive it I don’t, live here it will. :)

Isn’t this polluting? They’d get socked on Cap and trade, no?

  • http://www.hillaryorbust.com Hillary or Bust

Extremely stupid to destroy these cars. Convert them to biodiesel! You can also make them into electric cars with a converter kit. Yeesh.

  • MrMike

This is like the loons that hand over Civil War rifles or pistols to the gun melting programs. That Corvette if it isn’t trashed would have brought as much if not more than the clunker allowance sold privately.

Yes tzada, I understand. How can our feelings become attached to an inanimate object? I think of the children’s book–The Velveteen Rabbit. Or, I think of Martin Crane’s old chair in The Frasier series. Frasier wants to get rid of the ugly old chair and cannot understand why his dad loves it. To paraphrase from memory: “I was sitting in that chair when I first got the news that your mother was pregnant with you. I was sitting in that chair when Neil Armstrong first set foot on the moon . . . ” A world from which all of our sentimentalized objects have disappeared has lost much of its life.

Since this is an open thread, I thought I’d share some GOOD NEWS from SW FLA! The OBOTS are coming out of their koolaid stupors in mass!!

Proof – my daughter and her friends (they’re even writing & singing songs about the Great CON)

My daughter (x obot) came to show me her MYSPACE page with her pals uploaded rap song she’s made with some other guy and WOW I was so impressed! They GOT IT! It took some time and a lot of screw ups and broken promises from Bambi to finally convince them but they are NOW upset!

I’ve been trying to find a way to upload the song – it’s that good! But my skills today are lacking! I’ll keep working on it but I am sooooo convinced with that much effort to have been put forward to making the music that it is FOR REAL!

watch out barry – your base is crumbling before your eyes and they are YOUNG and PISSED! You will make them more cynical than they already are sadly! PUNK!

This is sad! How many young men my age dreamed of driving Route 66 as Tod and Buz did in a Vette. Heck, my own son even made his mom drive home one time from CA to CO taking as much of Route 66 as possible. He wasn’t even thought of when the show aired on t.v., but he knew about the whole phenomenon of traveling Route 66. Sadly, we didn’t have a Vette, but we pretended we did. :-)

(My brother-in-law even made us a CD with all the different versions of the song “Route 66″ as he could find, and we played it the whole way.)

I still smile when I think of the hours and hours we wasted on Friday and Saturday nights circling “Dizzy Block” in Greeley, CO, during our teenage years. The old ’55, ’56, and ’57 Chevrolets, the Ford Crown Victorias, and for those who had a little more cash, the new Impalas were the vehicles we rode in.

Watching that car die made me sad. But now, I’ve made mysel really sad!

Agree, Linda A., someone should have been able to put it through a reincarnation to a fuel efficient car.

Since this is an open thread I wanted to ask if anyone here has commented on the boycott of Glenn Beck’s show on Fox by 33 companies?

Evidently Colorforchange.com is pressuring these companies to pull ads because Back called BO racist. While I don’t necessarily approve of everything Beck says, the last time I checked, the 1st amendment was still in effect. Honestly, how many times have previous presidents been vilified by on-air comments without certain orgs threatening boycotts? I’m just about at my limit of patience for this kind of nonsense.

I just called Walmart to voice a complaint. Anyone interested can call 1-800-walmart and use punch in 2-1-1 to reach a live person to express a POV. I’m going to try to get the entire list and start voicing my own boycotts if these cowardly companies cave to Colorforchange (which btw was founded by another friend of BO). I’m sick of anyone who objects to BO being silenced.

    Peronism anyone?

  • socalannie

Great comment Diana. Thanks for reminding me about Route 66; I was a small child when it was playing, so don’t remember it vividly, but as my son (only 15) has been saying lately that he wants to drive 66, I just added it to my Netflix list. Agree with you & Linda. That car could have been restored by someone who loves corvettes. It feels like we’re watching American culture die and just be swept aside.

  • oowawa
  • Portia Elizabeth

I still name my car. My little Volvo is Lars and he gets me safely home each day.

When I was in college I used to get so irritated when I saw a tv show with a car crash because the car that got wrecked was always nicer than the car I was driving. I used to think, “If only they’d given that car to some poor, deserving student instead of destroying it!” I wanted to cry.

That’s how I felt when I saw that Corvette.

  • socalannie

What kind of “guys” would want to destroy a corvette? I’ve don’t when I’ve seen anything so unnatural. Its odd enough that someone would turn in a vette as a clunker for measly 4 grand off a new car.

like all fads, Obamania was bound to die as quickly as it sprung up; we all knew it. unfortunately, the children who voted him into office don’t have the same perspective on history as many of the oldsters here, and of course the crooks who bankrolled The Fraud knew a golden opportunity when they saw one.

  • NoBamaNoWay

right; this program is foolish on so many levels.

  • I’m a Linda too

Oh yes, but Obambi was desperate to make something look good out of his administration and after we paid for and gave away American Motors, he was again willing to make a deal with the devil. Quite a huge price tag for this effort, too. We won’t talk about the idea Republicans had to spur car sales with waiving the sales tax BEFORE Obama said they were too big to fail so we had to give BILLIONS of dollars to them…to ok, they have to fail to succeed AFTER getting billions…and then…oh, we’re going to give billions more after they reorg and get sold to foreign companies.

    A waste, indeed.
I’m driving a 94 Roadmaster and an 87 LeBaron Mark Cross convertible. This is going to make it even harder for people to get parts for their old cars. Don’t squish the old cars. Some of those parts are still good!
To repeat – what a waste.

  • Ellen D

BTW – this rant came about because my Buick Roadmaster wagon has a Corvette engine.

I don’t the radical left wants cars on the road period. If they could legally get rid of all cars they would and force people to bike or take public transportation.

At least that seems to be the attitude here in Chicago.

Remember the old commercial “Baseball, hot dogs, apple pie and Chevrolet?”

  • Dave

The horrible video will not display anymore can it repost or is there another place to look at it. Cash for Clunkers I am sure will return since our government now only cares about what they want to do no matter how much it destroys. I live in a smallish Mississippi town and to see the cars lined up at the dealerships waiting to be destroyed is just downright obscene since many people I know would love to have 1 of them and would probably get a car that is more dependable, safer and more fuel efficient than what they now have. I thought Obama and the Democrats are for the poor folks! This screws them even worse since it drives up replacement parts and used car prices. Also the poor dealers who used to be able to sell Chrysler or GM products but where cut by the auto task force and now down to used only are screwed once more! Thanks for the great website!

  • oowawa

Yes Cat in NJ–sure do remember that. The image of the destroyed Corvette also reminds me of 2 Bob Seger songs. The first is from the familiar commercial: “Like a Rock.” The second is not so familiar, and deals with Thunderbirds, but it might as well deal with Corvettes. It is a fitting eulogy for the American auto industry:

The big line moved one mile an hour
    So loud it really hurt
The big line moved so loud
    It really hurt
    Back in ’55
    We were makin’ thunderbirds

    We filled conveyors
    We met production

    We met production
    Foremen didn’t waste words
    We were young and proud
    We were makin’ thunderbirds

    We were makin’ thunderbirds
They were long and low and sleek and fast
They were all you ever heard
    Back in ’55
    We were makin’ thunderbirds

Now the years have flown and the plants have changed
And you’re lucky if you work
The big line moves but you’re lucky if you work
    Back in ’55
    We were makin’ thunderbirds

    We were makin’ thunderbirds
They were long and low and sleek and fast
They were classic in a word
    Back in ’55
    We were makin’ thunderbirds
    We were young and proud
    We were makin’ thunderbirds

Is there a Corvette that runs not worth $4,500? Obviously this was a quality of life issue and a casualty of the Obama death panels.

  • Docelder

Apparently Castro has just figured it out… Obama doesn’t look like the guy on the dollar bill. Who knew? Why do Castro, MSNBO, Hollywood and the governor of NY all have the same talking points? Are there no other cards in the deck for this administration?

  • Karma

Exactly, they didn’t just kill off those parts but parts shared across several makes and models.

A hs bf had a big block Chevy engine in a 68 Pontiac GTO. Since they were both GM cars, like your Roadmaster and the Corvette, the motor mounts were in the same place.

Of course he had to swap out the tranny, rear end, etc for Chevy but it was through parts from other cars he found what he needed and rebuilt them for the GTO.

All those parts gone and both mechanics and driveway mechanics like my dad (back in the day) or the hs bf are at a loss.

Anyway, those Roadmaster and Caprice wagons were almost instant classics when they came out. They really caused a stir. ;)

  • Karma

Short, sweet and to the point. Tried to say this on another thread but it wasn’t as effective.

  • KZnextzone

I agree the death of a Corvette is sad, I did own one of those ’84 model. It was the biggest lemon to roll off the assembly lines of the motor city. I paid $3K for it and put almost $9K more into it. My ex traded it in on a Four Runner years ago. I remember after we test drove the 4 runner she told the dealer (used car) “the radio is broken”.
He responded “so’s the radio in the vette”….
