Big Brotha Barack

It started out so innocently. With all the rumors swirling — about fueled by the curious lack of a paper trail and his admission of falsifying information in his biographies — it sort of made sense. Barack Obama needed to do something to combat what he perceived to be smears about his character being spread like wildfire.

Of course it probably never occurred to him to just tell the truth. Or maybe to present documents that any other politician would have readily available. No, Obama decided that he would rather just create another shrine to his mythos and created a website specifically set up to set the record straight.

Most of us were cool with the idea even though we might have snickered a little bit privately. And if that was the end to it perhaps we would have moved on. But little did we know that this was only the beginning of a clearly well thought out strategy to taper the message and the image that Obama projects.

He decided that we weren’t going to be witness to the truth. Instead we would be fed neatly packaged tidbits of information that the campaign would emit when they felt the right time to unveil what they consider the latest truth from the Master.

Many political parties of the past have created their Ministries of Propaganda which is exactly what this really is. Typically they are created by regimes that have no interest in freedom of expression. And I suppose that if we were really paying attention to what is going on right now it would give us a strong indication of the type of regime Obama would like to impose upon the rest of us.

Fortunately some are paying attention. And it would be wise for us all to pay attention to what they say. The International Herald Tribune provides just that insight.

Obama’s campaign tightens control of image and access

The campaign on Monday barred cameras from a large gathering of African-American civic leaders Obama attended. It recently refused to provide names of religious figures with whom Obama met in Chicago and directed some of them to avoid reporters by using a special exit. And on Wednesday, the campaign orchestrated Michelle Obama’s appearance on the friendly set of “The View” and a flattering spread in the pages of Us Weekly.

Barring cameras from meetings? Refusing to provide names of people in meetings? These actions are reminiscent of previous actions by, as it so happens, one of Obama’s relatives. No one other than Dead Shot Dick Cheney. Not exactly the most shining perfect example of a respecter of the democratic process.

Of course Obama always admitted that he was a post partisan working across the aisle kind of guy. But we kind of hoped that he meant he was willing to work with people, not become one of them. So much for the new politics.

Michelle Obama’s part in all of this is stunning. Barack has decided that his Finally Proud wife needs a good going over. You might notice the more elegant clothing, references to her as Michelle O and an appearance on The View to make her appear to be just like you and me. Not only that, she has a speech writer that is creating the impression that she comes from very humble origins. Damned shame she seems to have forgotten them.

Michelle Obama to get subtle makeover

Now her husband’s presidential campaign is giving her image a subtle makeover, with a new speech in the works to emphasize her humble roots and a tough new chief of staff. On Wednesday, Michelle Obama will do a guest turn on “The View,” the daytime talk show on ABC, with an eye toward softening her reputation.

Geez… the lengths these folks go to bamboozle the rest of us is amazing.

But back to Barack!

As I reported yesterday, some of this tightly crafted messaging is backfiring. The women that were banned from appearing with Obama because they wore headscarves surely weren’t very pleased. Being told that the “political climate” did not make it advantageous for Obama to be seen appearing with Muslim women didn’t go over very well.

That’s the problem with propaganda politicians. They are stuck in a carefully crafted image that doesn’t take into account anything real, only the perception of reality. It is an image of cowardice that a politician hides behind. Because face it, anyone with an ounce of leadership and courage would have embraced ANY American that loved this country. Especially someone seeking to become President.

While the strategy has won compliments from political professionals of both parties, who say Barack Obama’s campaign is exhibiting a high level of discipline, it has also created some early turbulence for a candidate who has run on promises of openness and cultivated a grass-roots following and a cottage industry of homemade campaign videos, memorabilia and street murals.

Obama’s campaign is making a transition typical of any newly minted presidential nominee preparing for a general election race. It mirrors the stagecraft once so successfully practiced by the campaigns of President George W. Bush to the envy — and, sometimes, anger — of Democrats.

So Obama is not only emulating his cousin Dick which is somewhat understandable considering they are actual kin. Nope, not satisfied being like one Neocon, Obama took a page right out of W’s campaign and has resorted to pretending to be competent just like Shrub. I wonder where he is hiding the Mission Accomplished sign?

But not everyone is pleased with the “new” Obama. And even more are becoming outraged because the “reasons” for why Obama must maintain his cloak of secrecy and control keep changing. Take for instance photographers.

In spirited discussions with reporters barred from Monday’s meeting with African-American civic leaders, aides said that no cameras were allowed because the participants wanted the meeting to be private, even though it was announced on the daily hotel roster of events. Later, other aides said the lighting was not properly set up for television quality.

Get that? First it was because it was supposed to be a private meeting (even though it was announced publicly). Then it was because the lighting was bad. Conflicting excuses anyone?

As someone that spent a great deal of my youth in the country I can tell you without hesitation that I can smell bullshit a mile away. And folks this IS bullshit. ANY professional photographer can MAKE lighting look just right even in the worst of conditions. They have the equipment. That is why they are called professionals.

And if pissing off photographers wasn’t enough, Obama decided a few weeks ago to piss off the whole press corp. All in the name of protecting his image it seems.

Tensions between Obama’s campaign and the news media broke into full view when aides announced two weeks ago that he was flying to Chicago but then sent his plane — and traveling press corps — there while he stayed in Washington to meet with Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton.

And the press? Well, they weren’t happy at all. And they let Obama know it forcefully.

The bureau chiefs of the major television news networks and The Associated Press wrote Obama’s top aides a stern letter on June 6, saying, “There are many ways in a campaign to control your message and conduct private meetings that do not involve deceiving the press corps.” The letter continued, “Going forward, we know from experience that covering a presidential campaign requires that some representatives of the press corps be with, or near, the senator at all times as part of the ‘security package,’ just as the White House press corps is with the president.”

After 7 1/2 years of hell under George Bush one would think that the Democratic party would at least understand the need for openness and transparency. But I guess if they really understood that they wouldn’t have stolen this election away from Hillary and lined up on the side of the candidate 9 out of 10 thugs approve of, Barack Obama.

Who knows how far Obama will go in crafting this image that he supposedly stands for. But from where I sit what he is offering is something we don’t need. No matter how pretty the bow is that he puts on the package.

I shutter to imagine what could possibly be down the line. After all, he’s already having secret visits with his top donors to create policy, that’s even worse than the private meetings Cheney/Lay/Bush and all others convened IN the White House. When Obama said “I will have the Corporations at my policy making table”, who knew, besides being a horrible thing that some actually cheered like it was a good thing to go further to Fascism, that they would be secret policy meetings before he even won the nomination of his party?

This is intended to give you all something to think about. If I remember correctly what happened in Flordia with Bush/Gore also all started with having a Dailey from Chicago involved. I find it very curious that that race and Bush/Gore basically has had the same effect. It seems to me that a certain bunch from Chiacgo started trying to pull some crap about 8 years ago. Their takeover of the DNC to me started then.

There has to be some way of helping McCain to insure this…does anyone know what % of Hill voters will be voting McCain..they have to have done a new poll…I know they are worried because of the list of 10…the unity checklist…we need one to insure a McCain presidency…10 things to unite American’s around McCain…any suggestions?

This just gets creepier and creepier. There’s a short essay on the PUMApac.org page with three yowsa videos by Flineo [the work is brilliant]. The essay itself compares the structure of Obama’s campaign to a Ponzi scheme, one of those multi-level marketing rackets–Mary Kay takes the White House.

I’ve always believed Obama was a manufactured product that’s now been branded the big “O”. David Axelrod’s work in astroturf marketing, setting up fake grassroots energy to sell a product, isn’t new. But he has experience and he’s obviously very good at it. I guess the next step is when he’s crowned: Obama’s brain.

Of course, in any Ponzi racket only the guys at the top win. In this case, the voter is the sucker, swallowing the dream in a big gulp, ready to put everything on the line to be a top dog, a distributor, a winner. I had an uncle who was invested in Amway years ago. He’d go on and on about the company, bend ears to the extent that when you saw him coming, you’d start running for the car.

But that was about product and financial independence, a small guy’s attempt to live out his version of the American dream. Obama’s campaign is all about power, winner takes all, anyway you can.

And the rest of us?. We stand to lose not simply money or ego but our freedom, independence, maybe even our souls.

    Wake up America!

You may have reported on this around the time the following was published, I’m not sure…

    SELLING OBAMA:
    BRINGING THE PRODUCT TO MARKET

    http://atlasshrugs2000.typepad.com/atlas_shrugs/2008/06/selling-obama-b.html

The fact that none of this list of consultants leaked until after Obama was formally the nominee (the interviews have been ongoing over the last few weeks) is a sign of the level of discipline the campaign demands.

Obama knows it is all style (substance is so so so retro). It’s all about selling Obama. Manipulation, propaganda …. think Obama girl. McCain will be painted an ancient, senile relic. Obomba will need a consortium of mop up experts …….. he doesn’t have skeletons in the closet, he has a frickin barn.

Obama Campaign Will Use Six Consulting ‘Teams’

Less than 24 hours after securing the Democratic presidential nomination, Barack Obama is putting in place six teams of campaign consultants that will handle advertising, polling and direct-mail efforts for the general election campaign.

Much of the expanded structure is built on an existing core of consultants Obama has relied on throughout his primary bid, although the expansion is significant and includes many (although not all) of the up-and-coming firms on the Democratic side.

“It’s a big country,” said Jim Margolis, a partner at the Democratic media firm of GMMB and one of Obama’s lead consultants. “These are some of the most talented people in the party. We want to get the benefit of their expertise.”

Margolis as well as Jason Ralston (of GMMB) and David Axelrod (AKP Media) — the trio has handled the vast majority of Obama’s advertising to this point — will continue to do the bulk of the production and ad-making.

The new additions include: David Dixon and Rich Davis (Dixon-Davis Media); Steve Murphy and Mark Putnam (Murphy Putnam Media); Bill Knapp (Squier Knapp Dunn) and Saul Shorr.

Three other firms — SS+K, which specializes in reaching young voters and new media, Fuse, a St. Louis-based media firm handling much of Obama’s advertising in the black community, and Message Audience & Presentation, a firm that does Obama’s Hispanic media — will also be involved in the creative team, which is known collectively — although not that creatively — as the Obama Media Team. (Obama also added Anita Dunn, a longtime party strategist and media consultant, to his team in early April.)

Obama is a man of his word, if only we could nail down the word long enough. So now he backtracks on public funding. No surprise. Nice article here from the AP:

(begin quote) “Analysis: Obama chose winning over his word
By LIZ SIDOTI, Associated Press Writer
Thu Jun 19, 4:39 PM ET
WASHINGTON – Barack Obama chose winning over his word.

The Democrat once made a conditional agreement to accept taxpayer money from the public financing system, and accompanying spending limits, if his Republican opponent did, too.

    No more.

The chance to financially swamp John McCain — and maneuver for an enormous general election advantage — proved too great an allure.

Obama, a record-shattering fundraiser, reversed course Thursday and decided to forgo some $85 million so he could raise unlimited amounts of money and spend as much as he wants.

“It’s not an easy decision, and especially because I support a robust system of public financing of elections,” Obama said in announcing that despite his previous commitment, he would rely only on private donations because “the public financing of presidential elections as it exists today is broken.”

And with that, the first-term Illinois senator tarnished his carefully honed image as a different kind of politician — one who means what he says and says what he means — while undercutting his call for “a new kind of politics.”

McCain, for his part, painted the issue as a character test, saying: “This election is about a lot of things. It’s also about trust. It’s about keeping your word.”

Not that the Arizona senator has much room to talk. He, too, has cast himself as a reformer who tells it like it is but his words and actions sometimes conflict with that identity.

Overall, the race between Obama and McCain amounts to an authenticity contest.

Voters are craving change from typical Washington ways and each candidate is claiming he offers a new brand of politics that transcends poisonous partisanship. Yet, each candidate, in what he says versus what he does, also is undermining his own promises not to become the politics of usual.

McCain, for instance, opposed President Bush’s tax cuts in 2001 and 2003. Now, as a White House hopeful in 2008, he supports them; he says doing otherwise would amount to a tax increase. He also long advocated an eventual path to citizenship for many illegal immigrants. Then, while in the GOP primary, he emphasized securing the borders first; he says he listened to the public outcry and a defeated Senate bill.

The Republican also rails against special interests, yet he has faced criticism for having former lobbyists at his campaign’s helm. And, just this week, McCain assailed Obama for proposing a windfall profits tax on oil, despite saying last month he would consider the same proposal.

“McCain’s a four-star flip-flopper,” said Chris Kofinis, a Democratic operative who worked for John Edwards in the primary. “The John McCain of 2000 wouldn’t vote for the John McCain of 2008.”

True or not, Republicans were quick to pound Obama over his money announcement.

“‘Change We Can Believe In’ has been thrown overboard for ‘Political Expediency I Can Win With,’” said Todd Harris, a Republican analyst and aide to former presidential candidate Fred Thompson in the primary. “Every time Obama’s change rhetoric meets his actual change record it evaporates in a cloud of hypocrisy.”

Last year, as Obama competed against fundraising behemoth Hillary Rodham Clinton and before his fundraising prowess was evident, Obama proposed that both major party general election nominees agree to stay in the public financing system.

In a November 2007 questionnaire, Obama answered “yes” when asked: “If you are nominated for president in 2008 and your major opponents agree to forgo private funding in the general election campaign, will you participate in the presidential public financing system?” He added: “I will aggressively pursue an agreement with the Republican nominee to preserve a publicly financed general election.”

Then, Obama raised enormous sums — and he started backing away from that position.

McCain, however, had indicated he would go along with the proposal and, since clinching the GOP nomination, has been trying to hold Obama to his commitment. Obama “said he would stick to his word. He didn’t,” McCain complained Thursday, and then told reporters in Minnesota, “We will take public financing.”

Obama made his announcement as McCain was in the Democrat’s hometown of Chicago — where McCain had come to raise money.

Obama’s decision also came one day before the candidates were required to report their May fundraising totals.

The move could be the death-knell for the post-Watergate federal financing system designed to lessen the large donors’ influence and reduce corruption.

It certainly will give Obama an extraordinary advantage over McCain and Republicans who have struggled to match Democratic fundraising this election cycle. Within hours, Obama showed his financial might by rolling out a 60-second television ad in 18 states, including several that have been reliable GOP strongholds.

Obama made the money announcement in a video message to supporters — and sought to empower them to give more.

“You’ve fueled this campaign with donations of $5, $10, $20, whatever you can afford,” Obama said in an appeal seeking donations from $25 to $2,300 and beyond.

“Let’s build the first general election campaign that’s truly funded by the American people,” Obama said — ignoring the fact that the system he’s opting out of is paid for by taxpayers who donate $3 to the fund when they file their tax returns.

Obama blamed his decision in part on McCain and “the smears and attacks from his allies running so-called 527 groups.” But he failed to mention that the only outside groups running ads in earnest so far are those aligned with Obama — and running commercials against McCain.

So much for being a straight shooter.

Obama avoiding the press is nothing new. Long before the primary campaign “ended” Obama went several weeks without taking any questions from his press corps. In fact that is why that “obnoxious” reporter tried to ask him a question when he was eating waffles. That was the only opportunity he had. And of course Obama refused to answer that question, too.

Obama has never been able to answer a question without notecards. That is why he will not participate in any debates anymore. And the press just loves the fact that this dipshit is able to outsmart them. They just keep on printing the same stories and showing the same old clips.

Since he never says anything that makes sense, it is just as well.

I got to the part where you wrote about the press getting po’d and I didn’t need to read anymore…comments or anything else.

Not because you or anybody else has said anything I disagree with, but because I have absolutely NO USE for a candidate that has so little confidence in his own values, vision, message, and plans that he feels it necessary to go to such great lengths to remake and market himself daily to fit the moment and please the crowd he’s addressing and/or control what the world sees.

A good, solid product that is truly beneficial and desirable WILL sell itself contrary to what the marketing industry would like us all to believe.

A new flavor reminiscent of used motor oil.

  • Hermagoras

Was that comment unintentionally hilarious or what?

  • Disconnect

Your goddess Hillary would send Princess Chelsea to give campaign speeches and Princess Chelsea would refuse to talk to any reporter about anything. Oh, and King Bill refused to release the donor list to his library and foundation to stop whispers of quid pro quo with Goddess Hillary’s potential administration (you know like when King Bill pardoned the FALN terrorists, and their petitioners promptly gave Hillary a campaign donation). If you’re going to bloviate about transparency, your goddess should be criticized as well.

Oh, hey, while we’re at, where’s the “whitey tape”, Larry? I mean, not backing your claim certainly hurts your credibility.

  • Disconnect

Oh, you mean like when the Clintons used to hire private investigators to harrass their critics?

  • Disconnect

Pardon me, but your goddess’ husband pardoned several members of the Weather Underground, does that mean that King Bill also supported terrorism?

  • beebop

Is that today’s talking point from the oblowme campaign? Why is it that you are three threads behind? Can’t articulate where you’re going to get any discussion? Can’t explain the 180 on Nafta or public financing? Can’t articulate a position of any kind that you know won’t change in, say, 15 minutes? Grow up. Get a life. You’re “Disconnected” alright. From truth and reality.

  • ulahane

Sorry but Pres. Clinton commuted her sentences of Weather Underground members Susan Rosenberg and Linda Evans after they had served approximately sixteen years in prison.

William Ayers, though freely admitting his crimes, has served no time in prison due to an illegal FBI wiretap having been used to gather evidence.

There is the difference. Rosenberg and Evans have paid a price for their actions (sixteen years in prison). Ayers has not paid any price and continues to spout anti-American rhetoric and brag about his criminal actions. I do not agree with Clinton’s commuting the sentences but there is a huge difference.

Why would anyone vote for a puppet whose puppeteer is unknown? Only those, I would think, who don’t realize that such a relationship exists or those who believe they know who the puppet master is! Half the time Obama sounds like he’s the playtoy of the far left, and the other half like he’s the pliable tool of the capitalists! If the MSM would all just do their job, this charlatan would be down and out in a week!

  • Clinton Fan

Jesus, that WOULD serve him right….

  • beebop

Pass the tissue box … NOT!

  • Clinton Fan

Uh, the “Goddess’s HUSBAND” wasn’t on the BALLOT, was he?

Or are you saying that Michelle “He’s Pathetic” Obama is the REAL candidate, here?

  • Clinton Fan

Webb’s perfect for BO…they’re both charter members of the “Wimmin Hater’s Club” after all….

Of course, Webb in recent years renounced that hideous sexism. And he’s said, in essence, to any suggesting he go on the ticket, “Not only no, but hell no.”

  • DancingOpossum

    Disconnect, is Hillary still running?

YAY! Thanks for letting me know!! This is exciting news. She will SMOKE Barack and McCain! Yay!

  • DancingOpossum

Man, the CDS has a death grip on these ‘bots, doesn’t it?

Or is it just that you’re too afraid to actually talk about how poorly BO is doing against McCain? LOLOLOL.

  • Clinton Fan

    Cogent comment…!

  • KG

Obama has become the type of politician that he’s convincing his flocks he wants to change. Quite ironic and a pity they can’t see it.

  • Clinton Fan

Uh, are Obama’s KIDS running for office? How about Obama’s SPOUSE?

They’re NOT? Well gee, then, let’s not apply “candidate rules” to offspring and spouses, now, hmmmmm? How’s that for a plan?

Your analogy, like your candidate, SUCKS.

And as for your last comment, LJ never said he HAD the item. Of course, you’d have to be able to read past the third grade level to actually “get” that, there, Tough Guy!

  • scalefree

“Big Brotha” – that’s not racist, that’s funny! So was “Slack Like Me.”

I have a really good one for you, free of charge: “From Gipper to Nipper”. Make it a historical piece on Presidential races since Ronald Reagan and for the punchline explain that Obama’s a “Nipper” because he’s “nipping at McCain’s heels” and if you think it’s supposed to remind you of some other word then it’s really you that’s the racist! That’ll really zing em. From then on you get to call Obama a Nipper with impunity. “That Obama, he’s quite a Nipper.” Subtle, eh?

I bet there’s something really clever you could do with renaming the White House the Black House, but you find some way to turn it around so there’s some other reason to call it Black than Obama’s race. Maybe oil? See where I’m going with this? I think you’ve done a good job at keeping it subtle so far, so don’t blow it now.
