Deja Vu

I was thinking yesterday about how I was a stupid angsty kid during the McGovern race. I remember being in love with George, no kidding. He was the cat’s ass to me. George was the next best thing to a 5-hosed hookah. I remember looking at Richard Nixon and thinking, yeesh what a miserable old fart! What beady eyes! How could anybody vote for him?? He always looked like he had a day-old beard, also known as “Five O’Clock Shadow”. God, he was odious!

Today I know “how” people voted for Richard Nixon in a historic landslide. Nobody really thought he was so great. The problem was they refused to vote for McGovern.

Really, as I look back in retrospect, George McGovern was a gentleman. Next to Barack Obama he was brilliant and honest. He had the experience and the service to his country to add to his resume. He actually had a real resume. His resume made Barack Obama look like a Playground Director. And he was a pleasant enough guy as well. He didn’t offend women at all either.

George’s problem wasn’t George. His problem was his followers. We were angsty. We wanted “change”. We wanted somebody who inspired us. What kid doesn’t? George was it for us. Pass the bong!

George was also rather academic. That meant smart! They called him an “egghead”. That was the equivalent word at the time for “elitist” and “snob”. George didn’t relate much to “regular folks”. He was….well….at a higher level. We young people understood what that meant. Our parents did too. They just didn’t attach the same meaning to it. Sound familiar?

George was beloved by all the kids.

He was beloved by all the college professors, especially the professors who taught Socialism and Communism.

The hippies loved George. He was like one of them only older.

George knew all the cool mannerisms and buzz words. And he knew our music. He turned us on.

The old SDS people loved George.

The anti-war people loved George.

Bill Ayers and Bernardine Dohrn for sure loved George!

The American Communist Party loved George.

The American Socialist party loved George.

George was the quintessential fringe candidate.

I remember discussing how cool and Far Out George was and how odious Dick was with my parents and they gave me that “Are you crazy??!” look. I didn’t get it. McGovern was going to pull our troops out and end that stupid war. My parents wanted that war to end as much as anybody. We had relatives and friends who died there for Chrissakes. McGovern was anti-war. Nixon was not. Nixon was nothing more than the establishment. The same old boring crap! Yet my parents were going to vote for Nixon! What the hell was that all about?

What had happened to my parents? I thought they were smarter than that! Was it like some pod thing? As my generation went, I had parents I could talk to. I mean, they were pretty cool. They kept me under check and acted like real parents, but other than that annoying problem, it wasn’t as if I had to hide things from them. Except the bong of course. The truth is, these were not completely Uncool or dumb parents. Yet, here they were planning on voting for Nixon! I could see they didn’t like Nixon, so why the hell were they going to vote for him??!!!

I’m telling you, I was just so freaked over my parents’ opinion of George McGovern that I seriously thought I should leave home while I still knew everything. I mean it was clear to me that these people who spawned me had morphed into completely stupid excuses for adults. Same with my grandparents. They were all voting for Nixon. My grandfather, the card-carrying Carpenter’s Union guy! They were losing it! How could Democrats abandon their party when they had the best damned candidate ever???At this point, I was so angry at my parents that I barely tolerated allowing them to feed me, heat the house, pay the mortgage, take me on cool vacations and buy me lots of stuff.

I didn’t “get it” then, but I get it today.

The fact of the matter is, George McGovern’s followers offended and terrorized the American Electorate more than the war did!

George McGovern received 38% of the votes that year, a huge bashing. Today we would call it “Handing your ass to you on a plate“. And there we were, stuck with Dick Nixon again.

What was it about George’s followers that made Americans trip over themselves to go to the polls and vote against him? How did adult America perceive them?:

They were mean. They were nasty. They never shaved. They burned flags and bras and shit. They rioted over simply everything. They had rock concerts that destroyed entire cities. They demonstrated and held up traffic. They were all dependent on their parents and had a lot of free time to be pushy and arrogant. They were often on TV doing something that reviled the rest of America. They took drugs. They had sex all the time. There were socialists and communists and radicals of dubious intent hanging around with or worshipping George. Some of them did dangerous things like blow up buildings and crap. Now who could I possibly be referring to?

The amazing thing is, they didn’t even have the internet in those days, where McGovern followers could terrorize, insult and thwart Nixon supporters. Technology was scant by comparison to today, yet McGovern’s followers were very well “known” to the electorate. Of course, in those days, reporters actually reported the news instead of creating it. There were no Keith Olbermanns or Chris Matthews-type people stirring the pot and working diligently to make things come out the way they wanted them to be. There were no nasty bitter old men like Jack Cafferty to sneer and snort and peddle his own opinions as if they were fact. News wasn’t blocked out because it didn’t “suit” the political ideology of the networks. If it happened, it was reported, even if the reporter didn’t like it. And boy-oh-boy, did those noisy rallies of screaming angsty kids put people off.

So, in 1972, people sat around their TVs and watched the bad behavior of McGovern’s followers. They chanted for George. They hooted. They yelled. They rallied in huge crowds. They chanted some more. Everybody around him looked about 12 years old to most of America. Some of them showed up at the Democratic Convention as Delegates, displacing elected officials that Americans knew and loved. 19 year-olds were making history, so they thought. Some of them hadn’t even grown beards yet in the eyes of their ATMs known as “parents”. They wouldn’t even take out the garbage and here they were as Delegates at a convention, trying to tell everybody who should be president.

Bill Ayers, Bernardine Dohrn and their Declaration of A State of War were well established household Nightmare names by that time, and the words used to describe them weren’t pretty. Their most recent Pentagon bombing was fresh in everyone’s mind. America had watched their crap on TV over and over again, and most parents silently thanked God they didn’t produce sociopaths like those two. To America, these were two insane maniacs blowing up the country and Declaring War on simply everybody.

In 1972, People also still remembered 1968 and the violence associated with that year. That was the year Richard Nixon won his first term thanks to the behavior of Young Democrats and the infamous unruly convention. Two great men were assassinated that year, and the result was yet more violence. It was not a pretty time and voters weren’t going to give these fringe crackpots anymore shots at crashing and burning down America and promoting socialism. It was as simple as that. When I think of Recreate 68, I think, Thank You! You are helping to defeat today’s George McGovern, Barack Obama. Please keep doing what you are doing!

The electorate chose Nixon because they felt America was safer with smarmy Him in charge. If nothing else, he would reign in the angsty young I-Know-Everything “new voter registrants,” also known as “dependents” — and hopefully keep them from destroying the entire country’s infrastructure. And there were a lot of new young voter registrants in 1972. This was the first year 18-20 year-olds were allowed to vote, so the number was massive. Remember, these were the Baby Boomers — The largest block of young voters in the history of America. This voting block was far larger than the youth voting block of today. Yet……..George McGovern got 38% of the vote that year.

Nobody helped George McGovern lose that ’72 election more than his young followers did. They were a Gift to Richard Nixon.

Today, those Baby Boomers are still a huge voting block. Except now they are grown up and they know shit from shinola.

I rest my case.

That’s exactly how I remember it. BO’s supporters don’t seem to realize that we’ve been here before. And it’s going to be the same result.

But we could have WON with Clinton.

      Here Before … You Bet

Does anybody remember Watergate? the reason why the break-in occurred is because they were trying to dig up dirt to ensure that the most “unelectable” candidate was put forward by the Democrats. That candidate…George McGovern. The reason many have forgotten this is because the shenanigans were not uncovered until AFTER the election season had passed.

“Those who forget history are doomed to repeat it.”

I’ve said it many times before on these blogs…we’ve been “Watergated.” Yes, uppitywoman, it is Deja vu all over again.

      Sigh….

Just wanted to let you know that CCleaner is a legitimate piece of software. I have been using it for several years, along with window washer, adaware and one other piece of software that’s no longer available. It’s really not enough to just use the windows cookie cleanup. There’s malware adware and spyware to deal with too.

Sure makes sense, Uppity Woman. The wisdom of our years. Let’s hope that immense amounts of money, media control, internet saturation, and most Democratic leaders supporting BARRACK HUSSEIN OBAMA, THE FIRST UNQUALIFIED CANDIDATE FOR PRESIDENT, does not bring about a different outcome. By the way, Tricky Dicky was odious to me then; I have never had similar feelings about John McCain. In fact, he is (was, now that I am rethinking) almost the only Republican who appealed to me.

I want to recommend a piece at cannonfire.blogspot.com by Joseph Cannon, “Triumph of Double Think”.

No George Bush was the first unqualified presidential candidate. Obama is simply the other side of the Bush coin.

THey are called MODERATES. And they will never accept a fringe candidate who surrounds himself with radicals.

    • http://hyper-educated-uppity-woman.blogspot.com Uppity Woman

No UK, history tells us that “divided we become marginalized”. Again. The lesson doesn’t seem to stick and has to be repeated. The majority of the Democratic party is and always will be Moderate. Some might lean left, but the majority of this party is not interested in hanging off a left cliff.

      • UKforDems

The “birth of whitey” thread is an example of you being “moderates”. Undisguised racism covering everything from how blacks want to destroy America to how Islam wants to take over the World? Moderate?

a lesson to the wannabe Clinton Republicans. Divided we fall.

I want to see the party fall that was so bigoted toward the more qualified female candidate. I want to see Claire McCaskill lose her seat. I want to see Howard Dean become the focus of derision to the point that he refuses to leave his house. I want Donna Brazile just to remain herself, because that is punishment enough. If all this happens, maybe people with brains can once again run the party.

And if you mean the country fall, that is way more likely with Obama at the helm than with McCain.

      • UKforDems

So the 18 million Obama voters were all misogynistic black males who could not see the greatness of Hillary? Yeah right. With attitudes like that there will be no Hillary in 2012, 16 or 20. There will however be a Woman President soon – despite people like you.

Have you seen the current Newsweek poll? Goodbye Rethugs. Your time is up.

        • morgan

Obama’s voters aren’t all sexist… I don’t think anyone has said that…but they all like to play the race card constantly. Obama’s supporters are 18 yr. old college kids who don’t know much and worship celebrities or libreal democrats who believe Obama is lying and really on their side…that is why none of the Obama supporters who come here and say we are racist provide a counter argument, they know Obama is lying but think he must to advance whatever cause they want. IT is okay if Obama throws you under the bus… it is just Politics.. the “real Obama” will do whatever whichever group thinks he will in the end… Right? Obama is really on the radical side but has to play the game. None of his supporters are really Outraged by black liberation Theology, right? Most Obama supporters know the truth, they just don’t care and have been paid to fight the smears… with what? Name-calling!!

          • UKforDems

I am not paid – the only campaign being paid to blog is the Repug campaign against Obama on sites like this. I am not 18 and in the UK I vote for the Conservatives so I am not a Liberal Democrat. I am however prepared to admit to being in favour of the Constitutional Rights if the Individual over the State, something very much trod on by Bush and Blair. Whose time has come for both.

As for “black liberation theory”, that comes from the 60s. The US was still very divided on racial lines then. Of course that would generate radical views. As for all the Islamic Christianity etc etc I saw all that played out against Jesse Jackson and any number of black Democrat Candidates running for any senior role in US politics. It was even used against Dukakis and Bill Clinton. It is an old Republican smear and it is a major disgrace for any Democrat to push the same crap.

I again ask – of the often repeated comments of Rev Wright what was wrong with them? OK they are said by an angry black man and may scare some more “simple folk” as a result. Go through them – even the more outlandish AIDS comment

9/11 – Chickens coming Home to roost. The 9/11 commission and the Security Services recognised this as “blowback” for the US policies in the Middle East.

Feeding blacks coke and then jailing them? The US government distributed crack cocaine in black townships to fund the Contras.

AIDS – ok no evidence. The US Government did however deliberately infect black people with syphilis a sexually transmitted disease (Tuskegee).

As for saying Obamabots do not love America – there is a lot America needs to change.

The currently richest economy in the World with one of the worst healthcare and education systems in the World. I disagree with both Hillary and Obama on healthcare. You already have the foundations of a true universal system, funded through taxation, not private insurance and Democrats should not be afraid of pushing for that. You should not criminalise those on low incomes who cannot afford insurance.

The invasion of Iraq and the likelihood of Bush giving the next US President the “gift” of Iran as well?

Complete disregard of the Environment. At a time of rising World oil prices encouraging America to use more by having a gas tax holiday. The DMCA, the PATRIOT Act.

The sad thing is some of you know McCain would make it worse.

            • TJ

No, the US government did not infect them with syphilis. They already had it. The horrible thing the government did was to not treat them for it.

Also, foreign policy is not the cause of criminal acts. Criminals are.

As for making things worse, I’m not really sure if either would improve anything. Doubt that one is worse than the other. Both are mediocre.

I did not say that, so it is strange that you would. What’s important to me is that Obama himself is misogynistic, and a thief and a crook and a liar, and unelectable and unqualified.

Howard Dean, either through incompetence or intention, allowed our nominee to be selected by Republicans in small red states, so if it’s good enough for him, why are you bitching?

We have taken Donna Brazile’s advice and not let the door hit us in the ass as we left the Party Formerly Known as Democratic; so why are you here blathering about “divided we fall”? Yes, I was 20 in 1972, so I know of what you speak. The big difference I see now, though, is that the TV news isn’t showing the nasty actions of the Obots every night. In fact, they seem to be purposely ignoring them. If they did, Obama would have lost the primary a long time ago.

    • http://hyper-educated-uppity-woman.blogspot.com Uppity Woman

The rallies were all over the TV.

    • http://www.marcysmutiny.blogspot.com/ MessyMarcy

Yes, there is an entirely different slant — Obots are presented as idealistic, and the way they “won” the caucuses has been totally ignored by the media; whereas anti-war protesters then were generally presented as evil traitors (and notwithstanding Ayers and Dohrn, most were not).

Back then, though, people still had the right to effectively protest something. I saw on some website (Riverdaughter or this one) where a Jewish protest scheduled against Obama when he is in Florida expects to be placed in one of those “free speech zones” two miles out in the ozone. I guess if it’s good enough for George W. Bush, it’s good enough for George W. Obama. Heaven forbid the sensitive little guys get their little feelings hurt by having to see dissent.

      • JR

If you’re from the UK, then who the hell are you to question who America votes for? Your tactics scream “Rethug” posing as a “Dem”. You think just because you’re HIDING behind a half/part-black candidate who is also HIDING behind the Democrat name, you have the right to brand whoever you see fit as racist and are absolved of being a total fucking REAL racist yourself? It takes a little more than criticizing a non-white person to earn the racist label, but here you are trolling your merry self all over the place crying racist at every little circumstance that could barely be spun as slightly racist, like the good little sneaky RETHUG YOU ARE.

Bashing ANY Clinton is a sure sign that you’re a RETHUG/Republican. So feel free to continue projecting, “UKforDems”.

And these young ones are going to have to put up with us for a long, long time.

According to new Census Bureau estimates:
      * Born in the period 1946-64, the number of boomers — 15 percent of whom are immigrants — peaked at almost 79 million last year.
      * In 2031, when the first boomers turn 85 years old, 51 million will remain.
      * By 2046, when the first boomer turns 100, their ranks will drop to 18 million — just one in 20 Americans.
      * At current rates, the last boomer will die about 2070.
Since the most dutiful voters are to be found among persons 65 to 75 years old, the political clout of boomers will swell, analysts say. That will continue to impact debate over such issues as Medicare and Social Security.

        • bert

The eagle is not the only rip off of logos that Obama has made this campaign season.

Check out this link which shows McGovern’s 1972 logo. It is eerily like Obama’s.

          http://www.blog.newsweek.com/blogs/stumper/archive/2008/02/28/obama-s-logo-gets-groovy.aspx

I do not know how to cut and paste both logos next to each other so you can see the likenesses. Maybe some one here at NQ can do that.

Unfortunately for the country and for Democrats Obama’s campaign will end like McGovern’s – in a HUGE loss.

A lot of us have been confused by the amount of media bias in favor of Obama. I have been thinking a lot about this, and one theory I have is that a lot of people have teenage children or children in college. Obama provides parents with an opportunity to bond with their kids.

In this day and age when many parents have little to talk about with their kids, Obama fever is something they can share and experience together. Suddenly parents find themselves “cool” with their kids. They are reliving their teenage rebel politics through their children. Parents are excited to see junior become politically active for the first in his or her life. If Obama fails, their children will be disappointed. We know how much parents spoil their children these days. They want to see Obama succeed, I think partly, to protect the hope and optimism of their children, and to make themselves feel young.

Obama’s Payroll Tax Increase Affects Earners, Not ‘Wealthy’; Media Clueless
    By Tom Blumer | June 20, 2008 – 15:10 ET

If, as shown yesterday (at NewsBusters; at BizzyBlog), media reporters can’t even get basic things like the fact that $1.74 x 3.5 doesn’t equal anything close to $4 right, you would think that it’s way too much to expect them to understand the difference between income and net worth.

    You would be correct.

    Hey Uppity Woman!

Just wanted to give you a shout out. Loved your blog post of “Deja Vu!”

The fact of the matter is, George McGovern’s followers offended and terrorized the American Electorate more than the war did!

    http://hyper-educated-uppity-woman.blogspot.com/

    LOVE IT!

NBC: ‘Fashion Icon’ Michelle Obama Starts ‘Frock Frenzy’

The softening of Michelle Obama’s image continued Friday morning on NBC’s Today. As if Michelle were an up-and-coming Jackie Kennedy, NBC devoted a story in its first half-hour (usually devoted to substantive news) to raving over Mrs. Obama as a “fashion icon” and the sleeveless dress she wore on ABC’s The View as starting a “frock frenzy.” At the top of the show, co-host Matt Lauer announced: “Fashion frenzy. Why women everywhere are dying to get this $148 dress, today, Friday, June 20, 2008.”

NY Post: Olbermann Threatens to Quit if Not Made ‘Meet the Press’ Host
    By Noel Sheppard | June 20, 2008 – 14:52 ET

Although MSNBC and NBC officials are flatly denying the allegations, the New York Post on Friday reported that Keith Olbermann is threatening to quit if he’s not promoted to host “Meet the Press.”

The Post also claimed that Chris Matthews was actually heard lobbying for the job during Wednesday’s memorial service for Tim Russert.

However, there was no ill will intended, and I sincerely hope he knows that.

People suck of all races. To assume it was white people who did him wrong might offend you. But it wasn’t meant for you, and frankly I’m not sure I should clarify because it would lessen the true intent of that post.

BARACK OBAMA: I believe in free trade, and as somebody who lived overseas, who has family overseas, I’ve seen what’s happened in terms of rising living standards around the globe, and that’s a good thing for America, it’s good for our national security.

I don’t think NAFTA has been good for America, and I never have.

    I believe in Free Trade.

…that’s a good thing for America, it’s good for our national security.

I think we should use the hammer of a potential opt-out as leverage, to ensure that we actually get labor and environmental standards that are enforced.

    I believe in Free Trade.

…..But what I refuse to accept is that we have to sign trade deals like the South Korean agreement.

That’s why I opposed NAFTA, that’s why I voted against CAFTA, that’s why it didn’t make sense to normalize trade relations with China without asking more from China. I will oppose the Columbia Free Trade Agreement.

SCREEN: “[Obama] said the United State [sic] should work with the World Trade Organization and pursue deals such as the North American Free Trade Agreement, but the country must be more aggressive about protecting American interests.” (Christopher Wills, “Senate Candidates Speak on Farm, Trade Issues,” The Associated Press — 9/9/04)

Is he out of his mind! NO seriously..WTF? It’s a joke? Are we getting punked? Please why? What have we done to deserver this shit!? Does the Democratic Party want to even EXIST after 2008?

I could campaign against BO on the antics alone and win! The Democratic party needs to be rebuilt. They have not only lost there minds. They have lost there damn political minds! This guy is redoing seals! Whats next?

I finally got it. He is the Destroyer. First he stripped away (with help), the core values and foundation of the Democratic Party.

Then he set our community back from 2008 to 1968.

Turned reasonably sane people into raving lunatics shouting hope is change and change is hope.

He was able to resurect loved ones to cast votes.
Gave a new meaning to primaries by using down low dirty tactics (with the help of the DNC).

Gave us 7 extra states, moved the great lakes, managed to be concieved in Selma when it was physically and mathmatically impossible.

What is next? Is there an agency that can step in and stop the DNC and Democratic Party when they make horrible mistakes that could affect the American people and cause the party itself to cease existing?

    Hell can we CREATE ONE?

I finally realized what a deer feels like looking into headlights as it gets hit. Never could figure out why the hell they never want to seem to get out the way until now. I am standing here blinded by the sheer stupidity of the Democratic party as I watch this play out… and cant move because as I watch the damn trainwreck that is Obama crash and burn I am wondering how the hell they plan to win any elections.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading your post Uppity (even though I think it’s a bit of wishful thinking). I wish I could be as optimistic.

The problem is that Obama is not McGovern, Obama is a media machine deliberately selling the impression of being a “lefty”.

Just this weekend I went for dinner with some 60 somethings who are very liberal and they were shocked I was not supporting Obama. I talked about all the reasons not to support him and eventually got to the media influence explaining why I now watch Fox. That was the end of the conversation – The response I got after all my talk was simply “Oh, you’re watching Fox, no wonder.” It’s like people who support him don’t want to hear anything bad about him and he has a very effective policy of saying everything is a smear so whatever you say, no matter how real it is simply comes down to lies.
People have been hypnotized, they need to snap out of it! This is an election, not some righteous cause.

None the less, I say it again, I liked the post a whole lot.

    • meileen

Oh my god Caya, I’ve been having the same situation with my 50 year old friends. They think I’ve lost my mind. I tried to explain that the media is not doing its job, that you have to get info elsewhere. One friend responded, “he’s going to tax those over $250K” I had to explain to her that that was Hillary’s plan, and that he was going to add 6% due to Social Security tax increase that would effect her. She listened to that as money talks, but still could not understand why I would not go along with the party. I talked and talked, but could see that I was getting nowhere. Sent some info via emails, never heard back. Oh well. And another intelligent being gets taken over by the pods.

    • http://hyper-educated-uppity-woman.blogspot.com Uppity Woman

Yes caya i know a few like that, mostly academics. They kind of never let go of the bong. But for the most part, B Boomers turned into family people with materialistic desires that they passed onto their kids–who tend to stay home far too long, some pushing 30. When you have someone else paying all the bills, you can afford to dream.

      • Caya

I think you’re hillarious (in a great way of course) & I sincerely hope you are right. Most the people I know are very suspicious of Obama but these folk were brainwashed. I can’t stand Obama and for that reason I will keep sending ‘infomail’ until I break the spell he’s got on them.

Frankly, for an Immigrant..Obama new ‘Presidential seal’(campaign seal) is a mockery to what this nation stand. No offences, but in my opinion,I beleived that symbol has a meaning behind it…To used a presidential symbol and slap your campaign logo on it is like a slap to your forefathers of this country…..There is time for freedom of speech.media and campaign..but there is also time to shows some respect when needed, especially a Presidential symbol where it has bring Americans and dreams for others, as what it is today…And especially for those who had died for this country…

  • POdVet

Now I do not remember the McGovern campaign…I was only 2 years old in 72 :P But I do not expect a repeat of 72 this year. Obama will not get any where near that many votes by the time the Republicans are done with him! I honestly expect the entire map to be Red, even Washington DC. I predict he will be a one term Senator, if he somehow manages to stay out of jail. But I’m not about to give up and just sit back and laugh yet. We have until August to get Hillary the nomination, and thats what I will be working towards. Every time he sticks his foot or like today…his entire leg in his mouth, we need to call this un-electable twit on it. Unlike 72 I don’t want to have to deal with the lesser of 2 evils. So keep up the good work my friends, and we may yet have a chance to stop the Cult Aid BS Express and bring back the Clinton freight train to run right over the ones in the kiddie carts.

If parents are using Senator Obama as a role model to help raise kids..someone needs to call social services. Fast.

From what I seen the only thing a person could learn under him

    1. that you dont have to work hard for a position, just dig up dirt on your opponent to have them removed by finding weaknesses and any scandalous information.

    2. You dont have to ever say one smear word against your opponent. Thats why you hire paid bloggers and use the media to twist there words.

Yeah, I really would want him as a role model..NOT

Strange thing is that McGovern said that he was convinced to go over to Obama’s side in the end because his grandchildren convinced him to do so. Guess the old guy has totally lost it. Of course, South Dakotans saw it a different way. Great assessment Uppity!

  • http://www.anvp.blogspot.com soldier4hillary

Him slapping his campaign emblem on that seal is equivalent to dumping perfume on shit. You can hide the odor but its still shit.

  • Liberty Belle_never4Obama

    Dear Uppity Woman,
I read this on your Web site first, and was also impressed with your insight and recall, especially since I recall that time as well. Glad you had it posted here, too! Appreciate your site – helps fire me up.

I’m also afraid the old “Radiclibs” (radical liberals), as they used to call them, are now behind Obama and his take over, as well as George Soros, Oprah, and few other billionaires, it seems. I’m not buying it’s all a “grass roots” movement, like Obama claimed when explaining why he refused Public Campaign Financing yesterday.

Recall feeling frustrated that the Watergate break-in wasn’t really taken seriously until just before the Nov. ’72 election, or Cronkite featuring what the Washington Post, NYT, others were working on. Now “Woodstein” as Ben Bradlee called the reporters, and Sally Quinn sound like they’re in the tank for Obama.

Guess I wasn’t liberal enough as a kid – preferred Hubert Humphrey in the ’72 primaries. (HHH also led in the popular vote at the end in ’72 primaries, but there were only 22 primaries back then. McGovern was likewise a “selected” nominee. If Larry O’Brien, DNC chair, had ruled differently on “winner take all”, the outcome might have been different, I read.) Back then, we didn’t know half of the “Dirty Tricks” employed by Nixon to weaken Dem candidates, like the Cannuck letter written by William Safire in the Manchester Guardian to deep-six Muskie in NH. Wow! A letter to the editor in a print newspaper! Don’t you miss simpler times?

Fast-forward 2008: We know quite a few things done by the Obama or his campaign, supporters’ dirty tricks against Hillary, and her supporters, but perhaps we haven’t seen the worst yet. We still have a convention to get through, and an official nominee to pick – right?

Lord, give us hope for delivery by then.

Uppity Woman — are you the same person who believes in Larry Sinclair, the mentally challenged nutcase, and the mysterious video that hasn’t surfaced? Among many other unfounded rumors that you never seem to want to “clarify” for the rest of us?

Thanks for the history lesson, but NOT!

    I rest MY case.

As a matter of fact, Curious, you are very uncurious. If you were, you would have noticed that I do not believe Larry Sinclair and have said so several times on this site. But don’t let that stop your stupid little self.

Thank you for your input, I promise to give it all the weight I think it deserves.

      • http://comcast.net M.

Thanks, Uppity. That was a great post. You really hit the important issues of the McGovern time. I think you are absolutely on target to point out our airhead approach then. However, the current crop of Obama supporters aren’t really motivated by stopping a useless war as we were at the time. These kids have NO IDEA about war, the impact of the draft on our generation of young men, the loss of life. They aren’t being used up by the military on a massive scale. (I don’t think the young men and women currently in our armed forces who are being forced into 2-3-4 rotations into a war scenario are the same young people who are interested in Recreate68.)

Instead I think the young Obama supporters are attracted to the “change” meme because it means “not like their parents.” I see them motivated by immaturity, persuaded by their need to be different from the older generation. So they try to find themselves by trying to be cool, with the fist bump type nonsense and the rap music with disrespectful lyrics. Maybe Hillary Clinton reminded them too much of their mothers whom they are trying to escape. McCain ?…won’t go there.

The ending to your post was so on target.

    Uppity –

Great point. I was 18 when McGovern ran, and I supported him totally. Unfortunately, at that time what I REALLY knew about American politics would have left a lot of room in a thimble. To listen to me at the time, you would have thought McGovern was going to usher in a Marxist state done the right way. I can see now why older Americans were turned off by McGovern supporters like me at the time. We acted like we had it all figured out, and we had not paid any dues, we had not really lived life yet. We just knew it all. Now, I know that George McGovern himself was not even remotely like me at all. In fact, at the time I knew very little about McGovern. It would take years for me to be even more impressed with him. Years later, it struck me how much I didn’t know about speaking to other Americans about their concerns, instead of just dismissing them out of hand. Although, I do remember one insight I had about the media at the time that has proven to be somewhat prescient. I remember telling some friends that if we can’t get the televised media on our side, we really had no chance of winning. And this was obviously long before the 24-hour cable news cycle was born.

  • http://deleted AnninCa

    Great essay…..thanks.

  • http://www.anvp.blogspot.com soldier4hillary

Well I see what you get with an Obama presidency. Just another idea of the type of world we will live in with him at the reins.

According to him, I can just take something..oh maybe a poem by Maya Angelou, slap a cover on it, put my name on the new cover and its now officially mine

But if you notice. He always does things like this when bad shit happens. He does something outrageously by going to extreme lengths to make it appear as if he is something he is not.

Now I guess we skipped the General election and crowned him president with his own nice new shiny sea.. that happens to look like the presidential one. To give his foundlings, yet again, the idea its all over.

Now we suppose to pretend the GE is over? Why would you have to change your damn seal all of a sudden? I bet there is a supporter on his site saying that means he is president. They believe so much its possible they are attempting to convince themselves that he can just “become” president. I wouldnt put it past any of them.

    • http://hyper-educated-uppity-woman.blogspot.com Uppity Woman

Yes! We are going to appoint Barack Obama as president! We are going to throw in some of McCain’s electoral votes as a bit of a boost. Then we are going to toss in extra votes for the people who could have voted but didn’t. After all, we have the precedent for that all set don’t we?

      • ginaswo still says no Uhhbama

Yes Zogby has the poll results, its all Uhhbama..we dont need no stinking votes

        • http://hyper-educated-uppity-woman.blogspot.com Uppity Woman

With Zogby’s brother so deep into Obama’s campaign, the guy couldn’t poll some beans. He was so off base during the primaries, he stuck out like a turd in a punch bowl.

  • MikeB

It is starting to look like 1972, except for the media.

In 1972 we still had an honest media. Most reporters supported McGovern but they bent over backwards to be even handed. They treated Nixon fairly and were very critical of McGovern.

It is a different game today. Most reporters are gleefully biased. They cheer on the candidate they like and trash the other candidate. They helped carry Obambi through the finish line during the primaries. They will try to do the same in the general election.

If larry sinclair..according to Obama supporters is a liar..and none of its true..why keep bringing it up? If the whitey tape doesnt exist..why keep telling Larry to post it?

If Larry Sinclair is lying, why is he not on the Obama smear campaign website. Plus if its false, why not have the authorities investigate his claim?

Because let me tell you..if someone came forward and stated all of this horrible stuff..and I mean the things stated in that press conference would ruin lives and political careers as well as family, towards Senator Clinton?

The asshole better be legit because I would make it my personal goal in life to destroy there ass by ensuring they were put under the jail!

If Senator Clinton was the Democratic Nominee (not the presumptive) and someone came forward and it was found out to be a lie? I would go in the hole for leave, use my last dime for that month to prove this person is a liar and a fraud for attempting to ruin her career.

I would hound them so much for the truth (without crossing the line) they would have to do a press conference on me to get me off there ass. I would do any and everything to show proof this person lied by attempting to ruin my candidates bid for the white house.

I would use tact and decorum and grace and fighting hard for the truth. I would stand by my candidates side as she addressed it to the MSM by press conference that it was false and a smear.

If its not true..Senator Obama needs to get on the news and repudiate the accusation and show proof that it is a lie.

You’ve got to remember the context before criticizing the kids for acting out.

During their late childhood JFK was gunned down. They seldom thought of him as one of the men responsible for deepening our involvement in Vietnam. They remembered him as an idealist; as a guy who looked toward a brighter future.

There was the civil rights movement. Imprinted images of cops clubbing down non-violent protesters. Tear gas. Fire hoses. College kids working for civil rights in the South gunned down. Black churches being bombed.

There was the war. They’d draft you and send you off to be gunned down yourself, and you didn’t even have the right to vote for or against the people who where doing it. When you protested you could expect tear gas and clubs. At Kent State the national guard opened fire on protesters, gunning down students who weren’t even demonstrating. Your own government would kill you on your own college campus.

Martin Luther King preached passive resistance. They gunned him down.

Another Kennedy, Robert, came out against the war and ran for president in 1968. Another idealist. They gunned him down.

The kids went to Chicago and the police rioted. More fire hoses and tear gas and beatings and broken heads. And the country proceeded to reelect Nixon–Tail-gunner Joe’s right hand man–a paranoid right-wing authoritarian who was waging open warfare on youth culture in general.

Blame the kids if you want, but I think they had every right to be pissed. The government was rounding them up and marching them off into a meat grinder halfway around the world, while punishing them at every turn for having the audacity to resist the process.

Today is only a dim shadow of those days, but the parallels resonate deeply with a lot of people. There’s a reactionary element out there again, feeling threatened and demonizing perceived enemies. It’s an ominous sort of resonance. I can only hope the parallels remain a dim shadow.

    • John

You are absoultely right about the climate of being pissed at the time, especially if you were a young man. Fear & loathing really were the prime motivators. John Wayne releases “The Green Berets”(using his own money) and all I remembered was punja sticks, and thinking “f— that”. We thought LBJ was the devil and it could not get worse. Seems funny now.

coming to a screen near you:

The Justice, sits back as UppityWoman goes back to
her seat behind the Defense table. Justice taps fingers together and looks up across the room. The shiny new youth candidate, his Chicago Combine in the first three rows behind him, gleaming and toothsome. The incredible range of faces in the gallery above and below form every walk of life, Americans waiting with bated breath for a decision that would alter all their lives. The votes were fixed, they had no voice. One woman on a blog had spoken for them all so clearly, could a message get out in a paid for media world of multinational control? Would the Justice send it to the Jury would the Jury be fair and impartial, would they be safe?

The Justice spoke: Summary Judgement to UppityWoman and Democracy. Blance is required for Democracy, unilateral agreement is death to free expression. The Peoples votes must be fairly represented as expressed. Jury is nodding in affirmation, they concur, it does not need to go to a deliberating body, it speaks for itself, res ipsa loquitor, the Judge speaks for everyone, court reporter nodding, gallery viewers nodding, press looks confused and blinks repeatedly, Plaintiff is speaking in rapiud husghed tones to his Dream Team, (Pelosi., Reid, Dean, Soros, Murdoch, Zell and Farakhan)is looking for long knives or dirt to use on the Justice System, but they are all out, they turn to the gallery and one by one the Democrats in the benches stand and begin clapping for the Justice. The verdict is :McCain, the next POTUS. High above in the uper galleries mad laughter rings out. The camera pans up: it is Karl Rove rocking in laughter holding his eyes, George W Bush wipes his tearing eyes with a hankie guffawing and the Men in Black from corporate America smile showing LOTS of shiny teeth.

In general, commercial use of the seal is prohibited by Section 18 USC 713[4] of the United States Code, however the US Secret Service is authorized to use the seal in conjunction to fund raising sales for its charitable benefit fund.

Obama’s presidential campaign has received $2,812,336 from firms that employ registered federal lobbyists. [fec.gov]

Obama has taken $405,747 from the Pharmaceutical industry. [opensecrets.org]

Obama has received $1,185,937 from the Commercial Banking industry. [opensecrets.org]

Obama has received over six million dollars from the Securities & Investment industry. [opensecrets.org]

Obama has taken $608,822 from the Insurance industry. [opensecrets.org]

Obama has taken $168,584 from the Mortgage Banking industry. [opensecrets.org]

Prior to His Presidential Campaign, Sen. Obama took Money from Lobbyists and PACs:

1996-2004: $296,000 of the $461,000 Sen. Obama raised as a state senator came from PACs, corporate contributions or unions.

“But behind Obama’s campaign rhetoric about taking on special interests lies a more complicated truth. A Globe review of Obama’s campaign finance records shows that he collected hundreds of thousands of dollars from lobbyists and PACs as a state legislator in Illinois, a US senator, and a presidential aspirant.

In Obama’s eight years in the Illinois Senate, from 1996 to 2004, almost two-thirds of the money he raised for his campaigns — $296,000 of $461,000 — came from PACs, corporate contributions, or unions, according to Illinois Board of Elections records. He tapped financial services firms, real estate developers, healthcare providers, oil companies, and many other corporate interests, the records show.” [Boston Globe, 8/9/07]

            Move On, Moves On…

Ten days after larouchepac.com stunned Washington, D.C. with the article “Is the Democratic Party Accepting Gold Fillings?” about the funder of the 527 movement, billionaire George Soros’s working for the Nazi killing machines that slaughtered 500,000 Hungarian Jews during the Holocaust, MoveOn.org, the biggest of species that Soros created in 2004, announced that it is closing down its 527 forever, and is “moving on” to other loopholes, renouncing “big money.”

            It’s a hoax.

LPAC drew blood from the Soros crowd when it reported, in Soros’s own words, his past working for the regime of SS Lt Gen. Kurt Becher, head of the Nazi Waffen-SS section known euphemistically as The Economic Department of the SS Command, where young Soros was given a job looting the properties of Jews in Hungary.

Filling out the picture, LPAC released a full-length pamphlet last week called, “Your Enemy, George Soros,” [PDF dossier, above] on Soros’s hostile takeover of the Democratic Party through MoveOn and other front groups.

MoveOn’s chief Eli Pariser announced to supporters that “it’s time to close the 527 forever–and to challenge organizations on the right to do the same thing. That means we won’t raise money for our election work from foundations, unions, or even individuals who want to give more than $5,000.” Pariser claims this “not relying on big donors” revolution is all due to Barack Obama, who believes in the “Little Donor.”

What’s really going on? This announcement won’t actually change MoveOn one bit, because they have not taken any “big money” through the 527 since 2005, according to Federal Election Commission Reports. Instead, they’ve taken plenty of big money through a plethora of other entities, a Political Action Commmittee (PAC), a voter fund, moveonliberals.org, and MoveOn individual candidates and Congressional district funds. None of these are 527s.

You see, the FEC slammed the 527s for what they did in the 2004 election cycle, when Soros put in between $30 and $40 million to the groups. MoveOn’s 527 paid a fine of $150,000 for violations of Federal election rules. Soros-funded America Coming Together (ACT) was fined $775,000, and the Media Fund was fined $580,000, for illegal activities. On the right, the group Swift Boat Vets, that received $4.4 million from a single GOP donor, Bob Perry, was fined $299,500 for attacking John Kerry.

So, it’s no wonder that both Barack Obama and John McCain are “against” the 527s.

Soros is not out of the soft money game that he created. There are lots of loopholes, one of which is the PAC’s “independent expenditures.” Moveon.org PAC, in the period of February 2008, reported nearly $214,000 in independent expenditures (FEC report line 24); these were to “support or oppose” Obama ($61,739.16) and Maryland Congressional candidate Donna Fern Edwards ($152,120.00). Of the funds spent for Obama the largest were to Campus Media Group (Bloomington, Minn.) ($36,429.59), Google ($15,000) for advertising, and $3,750 to the Texas Democratic Party for a list purchase.

            • http://home.comcast.net/~vincep312 Vince P

This finance “system” is completely fucked up. This is one of the primary reasons why some conservatives simply refuse to reconcile with McCain. they view his law as a frontal assault on the 1st amendment. And I agree with them

It’s simply a fact of human nature that if a person wants to participate in the political process by advocating for a politician that spending money is the fundamental way that this is achieved.

What business is it of the governments how much money one person wants to give to another? If the payer is willing to give big bucks to the receiver than the payer is going to find a way to get it in the right hands.. laws or no laws.

By putting up such a giant, ugly maze of laws , I feel Congress has created an environment which gives every incentive for actors to act corruptly.

What should be done is get rid of all the finance rules. Make some new basic simple ones

1 – Only American citizens can donate
2 – There is no limit on the funds an American can give to any number of politicians.
3 – All contributions must be publication declared and accessible on Internet within days
4 – Define some formulas so that the public can easily see which individuals are a candidate’s “smoke-filled room puppet master”.. etc..
5 – No taxpayer via Govt / Public – Financing of campaigns. The govt should stay out of campaigning and stop figuring out how to “help”. A person running for office should have to engage the public closest and nearest to him to build up a base and get money that way.
6 – No TV Ad restrictions though full disclosure who made the ad.

I don’t have an opinion on corporate/labor/NGO/etc. contributions to politicians.

              • tiberius

What business is it of the governments how much money one person wants to give to another?

Without any restrictions on political funding, wealthy special interests simply buy the government. Money buys power; having increased power, it buys control of even more money. It’s a vicious cycle, that invariably leads to extreme class divisions and plutarchy.

We’re getting there quickly. Matter of fact, we may already have arrived. People probably think I’m a commie or something because I keep harping on some simple statistics–but the statistics are important: The bottom 40% of the US population now own only 0.2% of the nation’s total wealth; the top 5% of the population now own 58.9%; and the “middle class”–that is, the middle 20% American society–now own only 3.8% of the total wealth of the nation.

Should political power–the degree of control people have over the destiny of the nation–correspond directly to those same numbers?

The guy with money is going to want to buy his politicians no matter what the law says.. it’s a normal human selfish impulse.

Now we can pretend that the law can trump reality and everyone will obey it.

Or we can concede that if anyone is going to be bought then its’ best to know about it as opposed to have it happen in secret.

That’s why I advocate rapid disclosure and easy to find reports on who “owns” who.

Then on election day someone can judge “Do I want to vote for Candiate X knowing that MerchantManA is his sugar daddy”

I think that is the best system

Oh one more thing: The more “campaign fininace “reform” laws” they pass.. the great number of incumbents win reelection.

That’s because new challengers find it even more difficult to raise funds when funds are capped to favor small donors.

Scalia recognized that these laws seem to have the side-effect of more and more incumbents running unopposed.. as one reporter put it:

“Justice Scalia particularly said that Congress, when it passed this campaign finance reform law, wasn’t really trying to protect the process. They were trying to protect themselves and that the law would enable incumbents to remain in office and stifle speech.”

In the first part of 1972, I was attending Ms Polk’s Finishing School for Debutantes, in Vernon Parish Louisiana, on full scholarship.

Sorta missed the primaries, I guess, and don’t remember it the same way the diarist does.

I voted for McGovern in the fall, as did a lot of my friends.

He was the Democratic nominee at the end , and he was about getting out of Viet-Nam.

DAB, sounds like McGovern is senile. Who would admit to thinking like your grandchildren? Warped.

Bill Clinton is reportedly going to be meeting with mayors in FL. with Obama.

    *blech*

I was thinking Obama wouldn’t want the Clintons really doing much.

    • ginaswo still says no Uhhbama

Gawd our Big Dawg loves Hillary as much as she loves him, you know he would like to give them his back big time..

    • Gypsy

He will if he chooses her as VP. And, the Clintons are still a “brand” name.

    • grlpatriot

Obama is speaking tomorrow. Bill is speaking on Sunday.

  • http://Reddragon62.blogspot.com/ RedDragon62

As much as I love the Clinton’s, I have to acknowledge the fact that they are ALL political animals. By that I mean, they all will do what is politically safe for them. I realize the Clintons bucked that systems and for that they garnered many enemies, but I believe in order for Hillary to get her agenda across, she is going to have to SEEM as though she is willing to mend fences!

    • Susan1968

Here’s the thing — the Clintons never denied they were political. They’d admit that whenthey were hit, they’d hit back twice as hard.

The truth is — Hillary never did throw the kitchen sink at Obama. She barely hit him with a wet noodle.

Obama is the one who claimed her was “different, not like other politicians, would changes the way Washington did business.”

But the truth is Obama’s been playing cesspool Chicago politics since day one of his political career.

And any one who did a modicum of research could see this was clear.

Chicago politics make the Washington Beltway look like softball.

      • meileen

        agreed.

    Great post, UW.

I hope you’re right. This election is baby boomers’ shot at redemption.

    • Gennifer Flowers

      Don’t thinkany boomers about redemption.

Or give a shit about what you think.

  • Mr.Murder

McGovern served honorably, he was no stoolie like Nixon.

The media helped the cause of the establishment choice in that day.

McGovern had considerable opposition within his own ranks as well. The political caste system was what rejected him.

As for the ’68 campaign, the riots were a result of a dirty deal w/Daley and the help of counteroperative types like Serengetti, who taught Karl Rove the ropes.

Wonder how it was people like Ayers helped inspire the anarchist climate to try and instigate such items? Might be why he was never charged after admitting to his share of lawbreaking…

    • ginaswo still says no Uhhbama

      sounds familiar again

dirty deals with Daley..hmnnnn DNC in Chicago now..hmmm…chicago cops carry machine guns now hmmmm

lets hope they r not failing to deliver funds to Denver in order to justify moving the convention to Chicago to suppress all opposition ..

  • Susan1968

    Uppity – great piece.

I was still in high school when McGovern was running but I was baby hippie and very political.

Yeah — we thought he would end the war and change the world.

But down the road when the anti-war sentiment grew to include the majority of the USA, Tricky Dickie finally pulled the plug to assure his re-election.

But when the USA withdrew and Saigon fell — all those horrible images of South Vietnamese begging to climb on helicopters, we realized nothing is that simple.

That was our slow move toward centrism.

The Obama-kids will realize this too one day.

  • Susan1968

If Bill and Hillary campaign for Obama you best beleive they got everything they wanted in return.

People forget that Hillary also raised a ton of money and she has a very long list of supporter names, both small and large.

    The Clintons still have power.

If they’re playing nice with Obama they negotiated something big.

  • SusieQ

those that want US to go away (putting it too nicely)
ask yourselves, ‘why did Saigon fall?’

  • http://www.madinthemiddle.blogspot.com churl

I was quite young back then, but still old to vote for– Nixon! The last time I ever voted for a GOP Prez candidate– but I’m glad I did. I guess McCain will be this generation’s Nixon. But wasn’t McGovern the moderate? What about Eugene McCarthy? If I recall, he was much further left than McGovern.

    • http://hyper-educated-uppity-woman.blogspot.com Uppity Woman

Yes McCarthy didn’t make it through the nets though.

  • grlpatriot

Excellent post. Thanks for the details; it helps. I was just a babe in diapers back then. Even without the past as prologue, I know how ridiculous Mr. Wind Up Toy and his followers are.

    NObama 08!

    Great post

I won’t say how old I am but I do remember that election. I remember the love ins and the flag burning and the comming of roman sandals.
During that period a song came out that just about said it all for me(OKIE FROM MUSKOOGEE)

  • meileen

Hey Uppity, did you read this from PlanetOut today?

    http://news.yahoo.com/s/po/20080620/co_po/obamamarriageonemanonewoman

Not that I am surprised, but wasn’t he clamoring for votes in the LGBT community right before the Texas and then PA primaries? I sure hope all those that drank the Koolaid from the community feel all warm and fuzzy now.

Also, there was a great bit on Time.com (I think) today that posted a letter from the McCain campaign illustrating all of (well, not all as who can keep up) BO’s flip-flops. A good read.

    • http://hyper-educated-uppity-woman.blogspot.com Uppity Woman

Good Link Meileen. The thing is, the LGBT community knew he was bad news when he flat out refused to have his photo taken with the San Fran Mayor. Then there was an interview he was supposed to give to a magazine, I forget the name. It turned out they printed a blank page where his interview was supposed to appear. The man is a homophobic.

do drug addicts admit they are drug addicts?

I remember the children who had no say in this matter. I remember those of us that had no say. this is old. why do peuple think that power matters. well this is a clime.

    Excellent post Uppity..

    Thanks

Fortunately McCain is not Nixon. McCain has a little sense and he isn’t paranoid as hell. And he isn’t a psychopath.

Yes his eyes can get beady when he squints. But nothing like mutton jowls Nixon.

Barky is going down. I am not sure if he will lose worse than McCain but he is going to lose. BIG TIME.

Hey, I gotta ask. Just how did you hide your bong? The smell from mine always gave it away. Bummer.

    • tiberius

True, he’s not the least bit paranoid–so long as he’s got his lucky feather, lucky penny, and lucky compass somehwere on his person. In serious emergencies he can always call upon the power of the Spring Hill Lizard.

I assume we all know about this stuff. It’s probably no odder than the Reagans consulting with astrologers before making policy decisions…

    • Karma

So you are the same guy…and you questioned me about my motives? LOL…uh…ok!

      Can you say disingenuous? LOL

I am thinking of wearing a Barack Obama button for a while to see how it fits. Maybe I will feel safer walking the streets.

  • R.E.Ally

Very interesting. I have been wandering why a legal drinking age is 21 yet voting age is 18. It makes sense now that this brilliant idea originated in the 60s.

    • http://home.comcast.net/~vincep312 Vince P

I was born in 74, so I was drinking aged in the 90s.. so I’m just going by what I heard

I heard that the drinking age used to be 18. And the voting age was higher (or varied by state?)

Because of Vietnam the voting age was recklessly lowered to 18.

Then in the late 70s and finishing in the early 80s.. drunk driving caused a public hysteria, so in the reaction to that, the drinking ages state-by-state were raised to 21 or else the state would have its fed funds cut off

      • Lucinda

I can only speak for my state, but the drinking age was raised back up to 21 due to pressure from groups like MADD and the insurance companies. The rate of DWI/DUI among 18-20 year olds—not to mention drinking-related fatalities among that age group—was considered intolerable. I can only guess that this was probably the case in other states, as well.
