Bitter AND Clingy

OK, so maybe it’s because I am older, bitter, and (yet) clingy to hope, that I just seem to have a hard time with Hillary Clinton essentially becoming Obama’s handmaiden. Her site now has a place to join up for Obama as soon as you open it. That was freakin’ depressing. And then there is the upcoming joint fundraiser Clinton is going to have with him. This is almost too much to bear. I swear, this just seems to replicate what so many strong, qualified, intelligent women have had to endure for far too long now – being the Executive ASSISTANT to the lesser qualified Executive. Here she is now offering HER fundraisers and donors to the man who treated her like Pure T crap for MONTHS now. How does this HAPPEN?!?!

I guess I should have added “naive” to the list above. I naively thought the USA was better than this when it came to women. I don’t know why I did. Maybe because I worked my BUTT off several decades ago for more rights for women.

But I really should have known… Back then, people made an attempt at inclusive language. Not any more. Now it is “man” this, and “men” that when talking about BOTH men and women.

Maybe it was getting spoiled at my seminary – Union Theological Seminary in NYC – yes, the same one where Jim Cone is a professor of Systematic Theology (and was MY professor, I might add). At Union, ALL discussions, all papers, all chapel services HAD to be in inclusive language. Why? Because language shapes our reality. It does. There is no doubt about it.

But I have noticed over time that our commentators, newscasters, tv shows, movies, etc., have returned to exclusive language almost exclusively. That should have been a BIG ol’ clue for me right there.

Another place where I have seen a PREPONDERANCE of exclusive language, and this has bugged the BEJESUS out of me, is in WOMEN’S SPORTS. Especially after HOW HARD we fought for Title IX, for girls and women to actually have some tangible scholastic support in athletics. I cannot TELL you how many times I have written ESPN or whoever is covering college and national soccer teams when the announcers are saying things like, “She has a MAN on and needs to get the ball away.” Or, if someone is injured and off the field, “They are playing a MAN down now.” There is no MAN anywhere NEAR any of the WOMEN on that field. It is JUST as easy to say “One on” or “Player On!” or whatever.

What this does is translate down to the WOMEN or girls that they are basically substitute men. That they are not quite men. That MEN are the gold standard and the women are just men-wannabes. What the heck kind of message is THIS to pass on to our young people, both men AND women?!? It shapes them – it shape US.

And it is just this kind of mindset that leaves us with the most qualified woman, hell the most qualified CANDIDATE, playing handmaiden to the lesser qualified but MALE candidate because he is male. To see Hillary having to submit to Obama is almost too much to bear. Check that – it IS too much to bear. I cannot watch this new drama unfolding, myself. (Heck, I haven’t even been able to watch her speech from earlier this month.)

And that is why I can only hope that as Obama becomes vetted, as his REAL stance on issues comes out, as his REAL relationship with TUCC comes out, or Rezko, or Ayers, or, oh, you know them all – I’ll spare you, comes out, that the Superdelegates will FINALLY come to their senses and realize there is only ONE Democrat who can take back the White House, and that is the one who created all of the policy ideas herself, who knows the issues facing people, who is CONCERNED with solving the real problems that face us, and who WILL get us out of Iraq without all of the doublespeak and backpedaling on EVERY single position.

Hey, it can happen!! I am CLINGING to that hope – that their eyes will be opened, and they will see; that their ears will be opened and they will hear (to paraphrase Matthew 13:9). I have to cling to that belief, because the alternative is untenable to me. I cannot stand to watch this great woman be subjugated to this man. So, I will bitterly cling to, and hope for, a revelation to the Powers-That-Be to do the right thing, and to right things, in Denver.

I still believe, I still HOPE, that Hillary Can Rise…

She can offer, but that don’t mean she’ll “deliver.”

    lol

    • Lute

She has to stay in the good graces of the mob party, in order to function smoothly in the senate and get legislation passed.

      • Brendy

Hillary – as a politican WHO STILL WANTS A FUTURE AS A POLITICIAN – is doing what she HAS to do. You KNOW in your heart, Hillary hopes that Obama loses!

Besides, that might be part of Hillary’s agreement – she’ll campaign with him IF he pays off her debts.

Whatever; I’m just hoping no Hillary supporters go along with this and start supporting that white hating, America hating, race baiting, arrogant, know-nothing empty suit and that hateful, snarky, resentful, ungrateful wife of his!

        • Lou

We don’t really know what Hillary thinks or what’s in her heart except that her delegates were stolen and she wanted so much to help the people of this country.

Hillary is a genius. Why wouldn’t they want her expertise. She is a giant next to Obama.

    • fran

I know someone that is connected to Hillary’s finance committee. They are meeting with him and giving the minimum ($2,300), because she has asked them to, but they are not lifting a finger to raise more for him. They are standing strong. And his recent behavior is alienating high level Dem operatives even more. We are not alone.

      • http://www.thecityedition.com/Pages/Archive/Winter08/MediaPushbackCampaign.html Factcheck2

People on her finace committee and so many others that surround her are dead worthless as friends. I would never have let someone destroy my candidate like. These folks said nothing or else urged her to capitulate.

Sen. Clinton should have better judgment in people, yet we all have our shortcomings and that’s one of hers. And quite frankly, the thousands of us who comment or blog everyday should be striking while the iron and still hot. The illegal nominee declaration and coerced endorsement only happened two weeks ago. It’s not like we can’t undo all that by blocking the entrance to the DNC, protesting the intimidation and extortion of Sen. Clinton, and demand that she represent those 18 millions voters like she promised she would.

IT’S CALLED ACTIVISM. As another blogger said recently – Anything worth fighting for usually involves some actual fighting. What’s wrong with us? Why aren’t we confronting the DNC over its fairy tale nominating process and shaming the party to the point that they’ll worry about losing their traditional base. Really, this isn’t rocket science, folks. Just turn off your computer, call some friends, get on a bus to Washington (if you live within striking distance), and then go block the entrance to DNC headquarters. And maybe get Martin Sheen or Susan Sarandon to join you.

There are so many sites I have stopped going to. The viciousness of the Obama supporters and either the out and out bashing of Hillary or the unity pony nonsense of the hosts was such a turnoff. I’d like to find some more good independent sites to visit. I’m not in love with John McCain but am open to him as the only viable option in a contest between Obama and McCain. Obama would be a train wreck, particularly with a lapdog congress at his beck and call – I see the very real potential for ineptitude, corruption, and erosion of rights for the people. I can envision McCain and a Democratic congress cooperating for the good of the country.

Thanks for all of the nice compliments, y’all…

And no, the LGBT Community, to the best of my knowledge, does not like Obama. Clinton has been a true, stalwart, supporter for YEARS. She definitely walks the walk, and doesn’t just talk, like Obama does. His relationships with people like Donnie McClurkin and James Meeks, the minister and IL state senator, make his “support suspect. Add to that his unwillingness to have his photo taken with the mayor of San Fran at a fudraiser Obama ASKED him to host. Oh, why? Because Obama did not want his photo taken with the man who was such a staunch advocate for gay marriage. Obama has just paid lip service of late, just before the end of the primaries, to try and wrangle in this community as well…

So, yes, the LGBT community has a lot of reason to distrust Obama…

      • Typical White Granny type

        Just a thought.
Do you think O’bama-rama-damnya wants Hillary to walk in the Chicago Gay Pride parade June 29th?

If she does, the LGBT community should carry Hillary for president signs. That would steal his thunder.

Personally, I don’t think she should get any where near the ‘bots. They’re not safe.

        • http://www.rabblerouserruminations.blogspot.com AmyinSC

Oh, I would LOVE to see that – that would be AWESOME if they carried Hillary signs!

Yeah, I hope she doesn’t do it, either. She does NOT need to give him any more validation that he does NOT deserve!

          • Lorie

  • Mandelay

Again, sorry if you’ve already read my plea on other posts but I ask everyone to set aside a few minutes and think about giving up some small thing — a cup of coffee at your favorite coffee bar, an ice cream cone, a pack of butts, a magazine, a haircut, a manicure, a cocktail, you name it — and write a check to”Hillary Clinton for President” to help our hero pay off this large campaign debt. Time is running out for donations of this kind to be made. Every dollar we give is one less dollar she will be in his debt. This extraordinary woman traveled this country from end to end, top to bottom. She spoke out with courage, even as insults were hurled at her. She spoke out for us, she listened to us, and she inspired a record number of us to vote for her. And now they are using party politics to use her like some kind of prisoner of the Roman Empire. Let’s give her a blizzard of small contributions in the coming days to let her know that we’re out here and that we want to help. Thanks for listening.

    • k in the northwest

When it looked like Hillary was supporting Obama, eventhough she is probably being forced I stopped contributing to her.
I feel that if there is a chance that one penny might end up in Obama’s lap I cant contribute.
As it is now they took off almost every negative Obama post after Hillary’s Saturday speech.

      • http://Lynn Spiritof76

Money given to Hillary on her site–click “contribute”–will go to paying off her debts. It is against the law for it to be given to another candidate. Please send even a little–I sent $2 for myself and for 6 friends. (I had emailed the friends but got no nesponse, so I sent in their share.)If each person who voted for her sent that much the debt would be retired. Can send in through Heidi Li’s Potpourri and several other sites, too. GO. Do it!

    • Linda K

Thank you, Mandelay. I just donated yesterday, but your post made me make another contribution.

  • maq

Why should I send anymore $$$$ to Hillary. It will only be swallowed up by Obimbo. I wouldn’t even send him a black cent.

I would consider sending $$$ to Bill Clinton. That way Obimbo can’t get direct access to it but it would be available to Hillary.

    • Mandelay

If your check is made out to Hillary Clinton for President, Obama cannot touch it. But if you feel more comfortable giving it to Bill, it might not pay off the debt as making it out to Bill wouldn’t do any good. He’s already hit the individual limit for contributing to the campaign.

    • KarenAnn

If you send a check to ‘Hillary Clinton for Pres’ it WILL be used by her campaign, NOT OBAMAS. By law they cannot give $$ they have received for a campaign to another candidate. This is according to her headquarters. Also, she is NOT giving her donor list to BO, not is she giving him her e-mail list. Also according to the person I spoke to at headquuarters. Anyway, remember, he doesn’t need it or us, lol.

      • Lou

I believe this aboutt he donor email list because I haven’t heard a peep from anyone but the DNC.

    • http://Lynn Spiritof76

I answered this above. Before you make decisions you need to find out the facts…and the fact is the money will go to zetire Hillary’s debt. Now you have no excuse–so cough up!

      • Linda K

Let me join the others: Please, please donate to Hillary and help retire her debt. The money is NOT going to Barry, but to her campaign debts. We need to do it. We need to continue to support her so that she can run in 2012. Please dig deep and ask your friends to contribute. If everyone would contribute even a small amount she will not be beholden to Barry or the DNC because she will have paid off her debt. Yes We Can!

        • Lou

Let her know we are still standing for her and haven’t abandoned her..send 5 bucks? Make a statement.

  • Sean

Get a Life Larry. You are a disgrace to Hillary Clinton and her supporters. If you were a damn closet Republican all these years, why not just come out and say it.

    • Lou

Hillary and her supporters will speak for ouselves sean..no need to do it for us..Larry is respected..now go get a hobby instead of interfering and bashing.

  • thenana1

Good thoughts Amy, but the way I see it is that it is time to stop the “PC” crap that is going on, we should have the right and the strength to tell Obama (in this case) to go straight to hell. Hillary as the smart she’s should not have to play this friggin game of appeasement just to keep her CAREER, because there is by continueing to play this game will still hurt her career, far worse then telling the DNC/Obama off. Why should she be responsible to help him? It is time to buck the system and refuse to play by their “rules of deceptions”.

Standing up to him/DNC, what would that teach our children? To me it would be country first, freedon of true choice and it is time to stop this playing into their game.

    • Linda K

I know it is frustrating and aggravating and it would be nice to tell the DNC and Barry to take a hike, but Hillary is still a senator and thus in the middle of the political system. While it might seem possible to us to leave the party, the reality of the situation is that she is still the elected senator who has to work for her constituents who elected her. I don’t think it would make sense to tell Obama and the DNC off. But if she were going to do that, I would hope she would have been chosen as the VP for John McCain. But even then I don’t know all the nuances involved. We’ve asked a lot of her already, to stay in the race, to not release her delegates. Now we really need to understand what difficult choices she faces and that there are some things that are impossible for her to do – given the person she is.

  • maq

What is Bill Clintons’ address for snail mail? Does he have a separate website?

    • Mandelay

You can try “The Clinton Initiative.” Also, Bill Clinton’s office is in New York City, in Manhattan (Harlem).

    • Lou

Yes. Bill Clinton getting the checks is an alternative for those who are not trusting donations are for retiring the debt. I believe hs address is his foundation in Harlem. William Jefferson Clinton Foundation..

  • Ivory Bill Woodpecker

Perhaps the DNC is playing Plastic Jesus for a sucker, because the DNC doesn’t want to win the White House this time?

If they expect the economy to flatline during the next administration, they’d prefer to have a Rethuglican in there to take the blame, would they not?

  • baby-puppy

Hillary said time and again she would “work her hear out” for him. This is Hillary keeping her word. Also she’s probably under tremendous pressure, perceived oh real, from the f#$@*ing MSM, as they continue their hatred bombs against her and hers. Plus the Charlie Range;s and her other constituents are demanding she support him, IMO. She’s a Dem through and through and would have selected him as her VP without much fanfare if she had prevailed over the cheating by the DNC.

It’s us now who must take up her fight. However we should not expect her to support us or even encourage us because that would go against what she has said on the campaign trail. I say this because I have seen posts on other blogs saying Hillary would be proud of what we’re doing by protesting BO, but I don’t agree.

I do wish McCain would ask her to be VP, since BO is considering Hagel! Or some other Repugs.

    • Brendy

If Hillary DOESN’T support or help campagin with Obama, she will be constantly harassed and belittled when she returns to the senate, and most likely none of the dem senate members will trust her. She’s between a rock and a hard place. I’m SURE Hillary’s Mom will pull the lever for Obama in November – yeah…..right! A Mother’s love is FOREVER!

      • NObama in August

Hillary might have to do what she has to do to survive in the Senate, but we also as the public get to decide what we want to do. NObama!

  • WasLNbutNoBamaBotsKeepStealingMyName

Yes, I agree, it is depressing. I simply cannot and will not watch any of her joint appearances with him. I cannot fault her, as she is doing what she thinks she must.

But Senator Clinton does not own my vote…it is mine to control. And on Nov. 4th if BO is still the nominee, I will exercise it to protect my country and help to ensure that His Self-Proclaimed Royal HighAss…er Highness…never gets anywhere near the Oval Office.

But you know, it’s still a long way to the convention and even longer till the election and soooooo much slime is still oozing from the nobama campaign, it’s hard to see how they can keep from imploding.

I believe that Hillary is doing what has to be done to maintain her credibility so that she can live to fight another day. I agree that it activates on so many levels: having to be the “good girl” to get ahead, excellent woman covering for marginal man, etc.
Having said that, it appears that the DNC is calling out all prominent Dems to throw their weight behind Obama. It seems that the Presumtuous Nominee has yet to convince his own Party; the DNC is putting a great deal of energy into trying to engage it’s own membership.

  • Hmm

I’ve noticed the talk about fund raisers and joint appearances is coming from the big 0. In fact Hillary seems to have vanished.

I also have noticed that Bill Clinton has not endorsed the big 0.

I know that Hillary has to do what she has to do. However I will never stand with obama. She is only doing it because of the party affiliation. I can only imagine what Bill is saying. You will be able to tell that Hillary doesn’t WANT to do it..just look at her speech where she ‘endorsed’ obama. She didn’t mean it. You can tell.

  • Mandelay

Obama’s strategy for us to “get over it” is to destroy our spirits until we fall in line. It doesn’t matter if Hillary, Bill and Chelsea end up on stage with him and Ted and Caroline and Al and Jimmuh and the rest of the usual suspects. Hillary has already set herself apart from the DNC by the campaign she ran and the connection she made to her supporters. We know she’s doing what she has to do. Part of it is the debt (we can take care of that for her) and part of it is the way the party works and the way insiders “take sides.” Let’s trust her to do what she needs to do and still be there when the dust settles. Meanwhile, let’s not allow Barack Obama to destroy our spirits. The mission is simple and difficult: find a way to make your vote count and keep Barack Obama out of office.

The norm is that the candidates who don’t get the nomination help the ones who do.

    This always happens.

There’s nothing sexist and nothing odd about it.

    • Linda C.

That is true there is nothing odd about it. Sexist? It conjures the image of the more qualified female being passed over by the less qualified male, who now has to work to save his butt and the company.

And so what do we have, but the demand for the more qualified female to work to save Obama’s butt, try to get him elected and save the party, because Mr. Hope and Unity doesn’t know how. If it fails, the blame goes squarely to the woman. If it succeeds, the glory goes to the man.Sexist you bet. Since when has the non-winner of the primary been given the accountability of outcome of the general election when that person isn’t even on the ballot?

You know being called a racist is sooooooooo old now. The reason we will not vote for your man is because he is UNQUALIFIED. He has many, many radical, anti-American associates. The position of the PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA is not to be taken lightly. I do not trust Obama, and it has NOTHING to do with his race. And even though I support Hillary, my support of her also has nothing to do with sex. I believe that she is the most qualified person running in this election, to lead our country in these troubling times.

    • http://Lynn Spiritof76

I’m tired of the “racist” label too. Also my AA daughter-in-law, in spite of our being on opposite sides in this primary, thinks I’m the greatest mother-in-law in the world. (And—her mother won’t vote for Obama either.)

I’m finished with the DNC period will vote 4 years of MCCAIN and screw the DEMOCRATS.They are only worried about thier pocket books and their base the AA people and Afrimative action. Well I am a white woman and they left me.They think we are to stupid to think for ourselves that they know what is good foe us.Well they can take that elite attitude and shove it.I knew the Clinton years and no one can repudiate the prosperty and Freedom we had then.

Senator Clinton has not done a thing yet. Just let it play out. The SD’s abandoned her. There was nothing she could do to change that. She needed their support at the convention and they made it clear that they were unwilling to do that. We all believe they made the wrong decision. Senator Clinton has been in politics a long time. I somehow doubt that Senator Clinton is going to be “that obedient”.

I just wrote HRC on her website under ‘contact us’ at the bottom. I clearly said I wasn’t about to support Obama – ever. Here’s what I wrote:

I absolutely refuse to support Barack Obama. The man is a fake. A shell. He’s not someone I want to see in the White House and I’ll work against it until November. If I have to not vote, if I have to write in HRC, if I have to vote for McCain, I will.

I’m just saying NO to Obama. NOBama. No We Won’t.

Please don’t ask me to buckle. I will not. The man is disgusting and slimy and so are his supporters.

I’ve un-registered as a Dem now. I will give nothing to the DNC nor to Obama’s campaign.

You forgot to point out that you are from Florida and you have been disenfranchised by Obama!

My husband and I aren’t from Florida — but for this reason alone we will never vote for Obama. I didn’t realize my husband felt this strongly until he told me that he responded to the DNC questionnaire and plea for$$$$ by telling them that if they counted ALL the votes in Florida by a date in May that he would “consider” donating to the democrat party.

The lack of respect for the voters in Florida and Michigan is so crass and vile — that words haven’t yet been coined to express my hatred of the DNC — Howie Dean and Donna is a racist Brazile in particular!

    Democrat:

He really is a US Senator-which he has done nothing with since he began running for office almost immediately after getting into office

He really does have more elected time in office than Hillary—and yet he seems like a neofyte with his lack of accomplishments

He really was the editoe of the Harvard Law Review–unpublished and at a time the college was coming under attack for diversity issues

He really did teach constitutional law at Chicago– as a senior lecturer

He really did write two books without a ghost writer— the first one was like his candidacy…more fiction than fact, the second one was inspired by Jeremiah Wright
He really did organize citizens in Chicago…where he learned his Saul Alinsky tactics

He really did raise money from 2million citizens…with 27 billionaire bundlers and email lists from Daschle, Kerry, kennedy and Move on. Org and where he took money from employee of special interest and Lobbyist while telling the world he had not.

At a certain level of abstraction, I agree that it is a shame that a more qualified woman is playing executive assistant to a lesser qualified executive. If it helps at all, I have an easy explanation for why I did not vote for Hillary: I believe in accountability, and I believe Hillary made a huge mistake in endowing the President with the ability to wage war on Iraq. That was a disastrous mistake, and one that, to me, indicated that Senator Clinton was too hawkish for my taste. Even taking her at her word that she did not know that the President would be so reckless as to use the authorization she and others granted him, I believe that granting such an authorization shows too much comfort in using hawkish tactics in foreign affairs, not to mention some degree of naivety. If foreign affairs did not matter to me as much as they currently do, I would have been better disposed towards Senator Clinton’s candidacy, but seeing as she champions the sort of foreign policy attitudes that Republicans champion (don’t talk to our enemies), and seeing as though her team of foreign policy advisors includes unseemly hawkish people (like Mark Penn) that should have been discredited not only by their mistakes in the run-up to the war but also by their attacks on dissenters, I could not support Senator Clinton’s campaign. That said, it is undeniable that in the domestic front, she had a very good agenda.

On the domestic front, I did take comfort in Senator Obama’s sotto voce support of class-based affirmative action; since I am not particularly happy with the way race-based affirmative action has, in recent years, generated a backlash that can hardly be healthy for race relations in America.

The one thing I would hope readers of this blog understood and recognized is that many of us Obama supporters did and do not fit the picture that one reads elsewhere in this blog. Sure, there are unsavory characters in Obama’s campaign who do things that are not kosher, and it is undeniable that a good number of younger people, untroubled by the phenomenon of “cult of personality”, have no better reason to support Obama than his wit and charms. But it is too easy to caricaturize the other camp.

Thanks for the thoughtful response, Pedro, but this whole, “Hillary was for the war” thing is just untrue. Read her speech on the Resolution.

And why is it that all of the MEN who voted for the Resolution got a pass? Kerry? Edwards?! ALl A-OK for them to have done it, but not Clinton. That makes no sense to me.

Add to that Obama saying he doesn’t know WHAT he would have done, and then voting for funding consistently, weakens the whole argument, IMHO.

Clinton consistently had the most comprehensive policy ideas – apparently, Obama thought so, too, since he kept copying them. See, to me, I’d rather have the originator of the ideas than the one who “borrows” them, and then cannot speak abt them with any kind of comprehension. But, that’s just me.

I could go on, but you get the idea. So, while I disagree with you, the tenor of your post is much more pallatable than most others in the Obama camp, which is appreciated.

Thanks for your respectful response, AmyinSC.

“Thanks for the thoughtful response, Pedro, but this whole, “Hillary was for the war” thing is just untrue. Read her speech on the Resolution.”

I did read her speech. As always, her intelligence shines. (Yes, I–an Obama supporter–think she is more articulate than Obama, and possibly more intelligent than both Obama and Bill Clinton.) And yet, she did vote for this resolution. Why?

“And perhaps my decision is influenced by my eight years of experience on the other end of Pennsylvania Avenue in the White House watching my husband deal with serious challenges to our nation. I want this President, or any future President, to be in the strongest possible position to lead our country in the United Nations or in war.” (Hillary Clinton, from the speech.)

This deference to executive power is very troubling to me, especially when the executive gives every indication that it will use its full power to begin a war.

“And why is it that all of the MEN who voted for the Resolution got a pass? Kerry? Edwards?! ALl A-OK for them to have done it, but not Clinton. That makes no sense to me.”

I imagine you must be asking here whether it was okay for me that Kerry and Edwards voted for the war. The answer is that it wasn’t. Did I prefer the prospect of a Kerry administration to the prospect of a second Bush one? Yes, just like I would prefer a Hillary Clinton administration to a McCain one. But I do like the prospect of the change of attitude in US foreign policy that, perhaps a bit foolishly, I hope for in an Obama administration. Save for some remarkably silly recent statements of his at AIPAC, Obama’s rhetoric is significantly more appealing to me on the foreign policy front.

“Add to that Obama saying he doesn’t know WHAT he would have done, and then voting for funding consistently, weakens the whole argument, IMHO.”

Voting for war-funding is very different from voting to give the authority to start a war. I would have voted to fund the war, as Obama and Clinton did. In fact, I sympathize enormously with McCain’s embrace of the Powell doctrine: if you break it, it’s yours to fix, and I did not much enjoy hearing Obama promise quick troop withdrawals. (The strong presence of Samantha Power, noted genocide expert, in Obama’s camp, was very reassuring to me.)

“Clinton consistently had the most comprehensive policy ideas – apparently, Obama thought so, too, since he kept copying them. See, to me, I’d rather have the originator of the ideas than the one who “borrows” them, and then cannot speak abt them with any kind of comprehension.”

If Obama copies her policy proposals when they are good, that shows good judgment. He may not be as articulate as Clinton is, but Obama is surrounding himself with people who will surely equip him with interesting policy proposals. The fact that his team of advisors includes people who were ostracized for their opposition to the war when some of Clinton’s advisers thought it cool to question war opponents’ patriotism is just wonderful. That Sunstein, Power, and Goolsbee are in his camp is the gravy.

To summarize then: I gave much more importance to foreign policy than to anything else, and I took very seriously the identity of foreign policy advisers. War hawks ought to be held accountable, in my view, and Hillary Clinton took some of the most disagreeable ones on board in her team.

    • KarenAnn

Unlike most of the Obama supporters that come here, you, at least have given a REASON why you support him that is based on something. Most can only say he will change things. I respect that. Debate is healthy. I disagree with you regarding HRC’s vote for the authorization for the following reason; it did not have so much to do with being hawkish, ie ‘a belief that going to war solves all problems’ but was based on the intelligence reports she and the other senators were given as well as her discussions with military and intelligence personnel. She stuck by her vote because she voted according to the information she had. Obama, on the other hand, never was in a position TO vote on the authorization. As I have said in previous posts, his speech in 2002 against the war was a no lose situation for him; if the war went well no one would even remember the speech and he would not bring it up. If anyone did notice it, he could say that he did not have access to the intelligence, or that he never voted for/against it. If it went badly, he could say I told you so. As he has. Point is until you walk a mile in her heels, you should think about all ramifications. In fact if Obama was so anti war then he should stick by the principles he says he has and NOT vote FOR the war once he became a Senator by voting NO for spending bills supporting the war. He wants it both ways. It sounds like ‘I was against it before I was for it’. Many Obama supporters firmly believe that he will have our troops out of Iraq starting immediatly. I guess they missed Stephanie Powers’s (remember her, his head foreign policy advisor) interview with a Scottish news program where she said that, ‘well no, he would first see what the events on the ground were and what the generals had to say. And recently the Iraqi foreign minister said that in a conversation with Obama he was left with the impression that Obama was on the same wave length as John McCain.

Regarding the issue of ‘not talking to our enemies’ I hate to clue you but all governments talk to each other. It is just that the initial contact is done by the State Department, not the White House. Agendas are set and meeting parameters discussed and agreed to. Heads of state do not initiate they finalize. So, Obama is being disingenuous when he says that the Repubs or HRC would not talk to our enemies. You should note that Obama first said that he would talk to our enemies without pre-conditions- he has backpedaled on that one. Probably because someone told him it didn’t make sense. Point is DIPLOMACY is the baliwick of the SD not the POTUS. POTUS sets the poilicy, the SD implements it.

Obama has taken a Bush-like strategy in his bid to be the dem nominee in that he tilted his rethoric to the far left of the party and is now trying to move to the center for the GE. My initial impression of him was that he was all talk, no substance or action and watching him these last months only reaffirms that. But then again I am from Massachusetts and we have seen this show before because it is the same one David Axelrod ran for Deval Patrick in 2005 so my cynicism can be excused.

And by the way, Mark Penn is a marketing guy, not a foreign policy advisor. He is like David Axelrod just not as savy.

KarenAnn: I appreciate your gracious response. I don’t doubt that most Obama supporters who come here do so to instigate fights. I actually do remember an entirely different atmosphere in the run-up to the war. Perhaps this has to do with the fact that I very much opposed the war, not because I was skeptical of the claims of there being WMD’s in Iraq, but because I thought that Iraq had no capability to launch missile strikes on the US, because I knew that bin Laden and Saddam Hussein were enemies, not friends, and because, in my mind, building a democracy in Iraq was a terrible use of tax-payers’ money. I also recall venomous rhetoric against war dissent (rhetoric coming not from Senator Clinton, but from people like Pollack & O’Hanlon, Beinart, Holbrooke, etc.) dismissing dissenters as unpatriotic. Obama, in my opinion, did not take an easy position, when public opinion was, as it were, with the Bush administration. True enough, Russ Feingold did something far riskier and worthy of applause, and I would have supported him i a heartbeat.

“Many Obama supporters firmly believe that he will have our troops out of Iraq starting immediatly.”

I am not one of those supporters. I actually was always very reassured about Samantha Powers’ presence in the Obama camp. She is a leading scholar on genocide, and this signaled to me from the start, even before her revealing Scottish interview, that she would not advocate early withdrawal unless prudent (which is to say, she would not advocate it). I believe the US has a responsibility to fix the mess it created in Iraq. I don’t support Obama because I want to see a quick return of troops but because I don’t wish to see another armed conflict, and because I want hawks to be held accountable, even not-so-hawkish and entirely wonderful people like HRC, who by my lights has indeed brought along in her campaign hawkish foreign policy advisors like Richard Holbrooke and Sandy Berger.

“It is just that the initial contact is done by the State Department, not the White House.”

It isn’t as though I don’t know this. As far as I am concerned, Barack Obama did not say that he would bypass normal diplomatic channels and just go have breakfast with Fidel Castro. He said that he would be willing to meet with enemy leaders without preconditions. A good faith reading of that assertion is that he would be willing to engage in dialogue even if before the proposed summit, the opposing party has not a priori agreed to some particular demands. This is not necessarily a bad thing. In fact, after seven years of exactly the opposite approach, I’m happy to give it a chance.

You are right that Penn was not a foreign policy advisor. Awkward phrasing on my part. I meant to say that Clinton’s foreign policy advisors (Holbrooke, Berger) were as unseemly hawkish at the time as Mark Penn was, and he was one who accused dissenters of being unpatriotic.

As I said above in another comment, I do not hold the view that Hillary Clinton was a reactionary war-monger. That is a caricature of my position, as it is of many Obama supporters’ position, I am sure. Hillary Clinton did, however, emit a vote to authorize Bush to go to war, and that is a serious flaw in her resume. If I wish to hold her accountable for that, it is indicative of how seriously I take foreign policy, not an indication of thoughtlessness and misogyny.

I would understand that except at the time Obama said that he would of voted for the authorization also. He also voted for every funding bill and campaigned for Lieberman.

At some point you have to give the authorization of the president to actually be the president. If the president screws it up, it is the president’s fault.

Great post Rabble Rouser. I’m bitter too, LOL.

Hillary is a politician and she’s also committed to trying to make the country a better place. It’s her job. Like most jobs you have to sometimes do things that really stink. I admire her for it, I think it takes remarkable strength, and the ability to keep your eye on the ball. She’s focused on the goal and willing to do whatever it takes to get there, even if it involves cleaning up after Obama’s high horse.

Now me, no, I’m not following her lead. No bama, no way. Nobody pays me to get things done in the Senate and I am sorely unqualified to be a politician. But outside of the presidential election, I think her example is admirable. People can learn from her and apply what she’s doing in other areas of their life. She is a real leader, one of those people you want to emulate. Her tenacity and focus is just amazing.

TEXT: US GRAND JURY INDICTMENT AGAINST USAMA BIN LADEN

    United States District Court
    Southern District of New Y
New York — A U.S. Federal Grand Jury in New York on Nov. 5 issued an
indictment against Usama Bin Laden alleging that he and others engaged
in a long-term conspiracy to attack U.S. facilities overseas and to
    kill American citizens.

The indictment noted that Al Qaeda, Bin Laden’s international
terrorist group, forged alliances with the National Islamic Front in
Sudan and with the government of Iran and with its associated group
Hezballah to “work together against their perceived common enemies in
the West, particularly the United States.”

Additionally, the indictment states that Al Qaeda reached an agreement
with Iraq not to work against the regime of Saddam Hussein and that
they would work cooperatively with Iraq, particularly in weapons
    development.

According to the indictment, Bin Laden’s group also tried to recruit
Americans to travel through the United States and the West to deliver
messages and to conduct financial transactions to aid their terrorist
activities. The indictment also states that Al Qaeda used humanitarian
work as a conduit for transmitting funds to affiliate terrorist
    groups.

The indictment also claims that Bin Laden’s supporters purchased land
for terrorist training camps; bought warehouses where explosives were
stored; transferred bank accounts using various aliases; purchased
sophisticated telecommunications equipment; and transferred money and
weapons to Al Qaeda and affiliated terrorist organizations.

The indictment also states that beginning in 1993, Al Qaeda began
training Somali tribes to oppose the United Nation’s humanitarian
effort in Somalia. In October, members of Al Qaeda participated in an
attack on U.S. military personnel where 18 soldiers were killed and 73
others wounded in Mogadishu. In another reference, the indictment
noted that an unnamed “co-conspirator” transported weapons and
explosives from Khartoum to Port Sudan for transshipment to the Saudi
    Arabian peninsula.

The Grand Jury document, which usually does not provide a great amount
of details in advance of a prosecution, also stated that Bin Laden and
“others” tried to develop chemical weapons and attempted to obtain
    nuclear weapons components in 1993.

The indictment noted that Bin Laden issued his Declaration of Jihad
with the aim of recruiting others to “kill Americans and encouraged
other persons to join the jihad against the American enemy.”

Following is the text of the indictment:

    COUNT ONE

Conspiracy to Attack Defense Utilities of the United States

    The Grand Jury charges:

    Background: Al Qaeda

    1. At all relevant times from in or about 1989 until the date of the
filing of this Indictment, an international terrorist group existed
which was dedicated to opposing non-Islamic governments with force and
violence. This organization grew out of the “mekhtab al Khidemat” (the
“Services Office”) organization which had maintained (and continues to
maintain) offices in various parts of the world, including
Afghanistan, Pakistan (particularly in Peshawar) and the United
States, particularly at the Alkifah Refugee Center – in Brooklyn. From
in or about 1989 until the present, the group called itself “Al Qaeda”
(“the Base”). From 1989 until in or about 1991, the group was
headquartered in Afghanistan and Peshawar, Pakistan. In or about 1992,
the leadership of Al Qaeda, including its “emir” (or prince) USAMA BIN
LADEN the defendant, and its military command relocated to the Sudan.
From in or about 1991 until the present, the group also called itself
the “Islamic Army.” The international terrorist group (hereafter
referred to as “Al Qaeda”) was headquartered in the Sudan from
approximately 1992 until approximately 1996 but still maintained
offices in various parts of the world. In 1996, USAMA BIN LADEN and Al
Qaeda relocated to Afghanistan. At all relevant times, Al Qaeda was
led by its “emir,” USAMA BIN LADEN. Members of Al Qaeda pledged an
oath of allegiance to USAMA BIN LADEN and Al Qaeda.

    2. Al Qaeda opposed the United States for several reasons. First, the
United States was regarded as “infidel” because it was not governed in
a manner consistent with the group’s extremist interpretation of
Islam. Second, the United States was viewed as providing essential
support for other “infidel” governments and institutions, particularly
the governments of Saudi Arabia and Egypt, the nation of Israel and
the United Nations, which were regarded as enemies of the group.
Third, Al Qaeda opposed the involvement of the United states armed
forces in the Gulf War in 1991 and in Operation Restore Hope in
Somalia in 1992 and 1993. In particular, Al Qaeda opposed the
continued presence of American military forces in Saudi Arabia (and
elsewhere on the Saudi Arabian peninsula) following the Gulf war.
Fourth, Al Qaeda opposed the United States Government because of the
arrest, conviction and imprisonment of persons belonging to Al Qaeda
or its affiliated terrorist groups, including Sheik Omar Abdel Rahman.

    3. Al Qaeda has functioned both on its own and through some of the
terrorist organizations that have operated under its umbrella,
including: the Islamic Group (also known as “al Gamaa Islamia” or
simply “Gamaa’t”), led by co-conspirator Sheik Oxar Abdal Rahman; the
al Jihad group based in Egypt; the “Talah e Fatah” (“Vanguards of
conquest”) faction of al Jibad, which was also based in Egypt, Which
    faction was led by co-conspirator Ayman al Zawahiri (“al Jibad”);
Palestinian Islamic Jihad and a number of Jihad groups in other
countries, including Egypt, the Sudan, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Somalia,
Eritrea, Kenya, Pakistan, Bosnia, Croatia, Algeria, Tunisia, Lebanon,
the Philippines, Tajikistan, Chechnya, Bangladesh, Kashmir and
Azerbaijan. In February 1998, Al Qaeda joined forces with Gamaa’t, Al
Jihad, the Jihad Movement in Bangladesh and the “Jamaat ul Ulema e
Pakistan” to issue a fatwah (an Islamic religious ruling) declaring
war against American civilians worldwide under the banner of the
“International Islamic Front for Jibad on the Jews and Crusaders.”

    4. Al Qaeda also forged alliances with the National Islamic Front in
the Sudan and with the government of Iran and its associated terrorist
group Hezballah for the purpose of working together against their
perceived common enemies in the West, particularly the United States.
In addition, al Qaeda reached an understanding with the government of
Iraq that al Qaeda would not work against that government and that on
particular projects, specifically including weapons development, al
Qaeda would work cooperatively with the Government of Iraq.

    5. Al Qaeda had a command and control structure which included a
majlis al shura (or consultation council) which discussed and approved
    major undertakings, including terrorist operations.

    6. Al Qaeda also conducted internal investigations of its members and
their associates in an effort to detect informants and killed those
suspected of collaborating with enemies of Al Qaeda.

    7. From at least 1991 until the date of the filing of this Indictment,

America has to investigate ,research and believe facts or things are going to spin out of control….At some point and time information will surface about Obama that will demand answers, though things have surfaced but have been ignored for the most part.. Obama has portrayed himself as the absolute answer ,but once his supporters realize his change message has put America in debt to Arab countries the damage will have been done and the devasting inpact cannot be reversed. …Obama’s associates and the people he surrounded his self with should speak volumes, but, for whatever reason his supporters continue to support him more and more.

  • S. Heath

I know Hillary is kind of forced to campaign for that pig Obama but I sure wish she wouldn’t. It would be great if she would just say no deal like the rest of us.

Please do NOT donate to Obama and do not vote for him. I KNOW that Hillary knows in her heart that he is the worst thing that could happen to this country.

Vote for John McCain and keep Obama away from our defense systems and our military secrets.

    • Northwest rain

Obama could never get security clearance to work on military bases — not with his terrorist associates and other individuals with even more questionable associations.

Obama has a vindictive streak — and he’s the type of personality who would order a bombing run on a whim — much like GWB was determined to bomb Iraq. These two are so damned much alike.

    Thanks Rabble Rouser Amy,

Love your posts. Obama’s manipulation of the masses, mass media and mass suckers, just concerns me greatly. I can’t vote for McCain but I’m not ever voting for Obama.

I hold out hope for a Hillary miracle at the convention but have some alternative ideas in the hopes that they can be used to hobble Obama’s attempt to fake a Presidency.

The Pumapac is starting to run ads. Instead of nationwide coverage, they should dog the Obama campaign in key swing states, especially where his polling margins are only 5 to 7% above McCain’s. Also target California. Make him have to spend money not only against McCain but against the Puma’s in places he has wrapped up. It is not enough to run ads though, we Puma’s need to campaign against Obama as if it were the primary with offices and precinct walkers. Hitting certain key states that he expects to take, like Colorado, California, Nevada, those Western states that he expects to win. He will have to battle on two fronts, the McCain machine and the Puma machine.

Before giving entirely up on Hillary’s campaign and voting for McCain how about a show of strength for Hillary by holding a convention in neighboring Boulder, CO. If Hillary delegates are not going to be allowed to vote for her, why go at all. Hold a separate convention in Boulder, claim that the DNC has illegitimately barred proper procedure and vote her as the presidential nominee, this will cause rampant confusion among the voters and works to ensure Obama isn’t elected. An alternative strategy is to have strong Hillary supporters attend the DLC convention in Chicago and vote her the presidential candidate. Shift the center of power from the DNC to the DLC. Or if that doesn’t work, hold a PUMA convention not a million woman march in Denver. Given the hostile thuggishness of the Obama thugs, I have no doubt they will try to kill the women who march. All those women’s lives are to precious to suffer at the hands of the Obomb’s mobs.

Lastly, instead of giving to Bill Clinton, much as I want to support the Big Dog, why not focus on Hillary. Let’s create a Hillary Leadership Foundation and just dump big money into it. Wouldn’t that shame the DNC, if this foundation wound up with all those millions that the DNC wants from us holdouts. Let’s give her significant monetary power to shape the media narrative going forward. I’m maxed on my donations to her primary campaign but there’s no limit to what we could give to a non-profit. This is how we can support her and give her independent power. We need to wrench the power frame away from the DNC and put it in her hands. I don’t have the expertise to create a foundation like that but I certainly want to help our sister out. I think in this way we can liberate Hillary from her oppression by the media and the Obama campaign. Back in those bad old 60s/70s, women created their own spaces to fight oppression and much as we have betrayed each other we also supported each other. Here is a way to make our support of Hillary powerful beyond the primary and the November election. Whether you abstain from voting, vote for McCain or even reluctantly vote for Obama, showing this type of solidarity for Hillary will carry her forward. Let’s face it, in our American Lysisistrata, it is not the power of sex that matters but the power of money. I would love to tweak all those cowardly Congressfolk and have a Hillary foundation.

A Hillary Leadership fund — now that’s a great idea!!

  • Catharine

As soon as Obama became the selectee I thought Hillary needs to go on a world cruise so she will be away and totally out of the picture so she can’t be exploited. After such a long campaign she deserves it. Maybe we should send her on this well deserved vacation.

  • Ann Inderlied

I find it lucicrous that John McCain would rather lose an election than win a war, but then is perfectly willing to give up his dignity and honor as a gentleman to try to win an election with this disgusting smear campaign he is waging!!!Speaking of desperation! I also find it fascinating that he is so hung up on the word “victory”. I didn`t think there was any “victory” involved when you occupy a country for a duration to assist them in building a new government. I thought you just do the job, then go home. I also question Sarah Barracudas love of the USA when she speaks at conventions for the wacky group her husband was in to seecede from the USA………..mmmmmmmmmmm.

  • Patricia

will never vote or give money to Sen. Obama
and I wish he would stop sending letters to me
it seems every other day begging for money, I
thought the man was getting tons of money!!!
I don’t know how he got my address, I have called DNC to take my name off their lists of
donors a month ago!!!! I know Hillary didn’t give him my name or address because the name is not spelled properly, I think John Kerry gave
    my address to him!!!!!!!!

  • drkate

spare us your attitude, because you are not informed. go talk with your children, maybe you can learn something.

Lincoln didn’t let people freeze in the winter and go back and make a deal with the same devil to buy a mansion he couldn’t afford. Lincoln didn’t hang out with corrupt money launderers and domestic terrorists either. |When Lincoln failed at something, he got up and tried again. He didn’t run away or send surrogates to his work for him.
Now can we go onto the next stupid comparison. Obama is no Lincoln. Obama isn”t JFJ, RFK, LBJ, MLK or Jesus. He wasn’t raised a poor black child to a single mother on welfare. His mother didn’t find him floating in a reed basket down the Nile. When he was baptized a dove did not descend upon him

He is a ‘real’ senator who has spent more time running for another office than in the senate.

His years in STATE elected office was marred by the methods he used to get there, the fact that he did nothing until his last year when he decided to run for US Senate, whereby the senate pres then gave him committee assignments to bolster an otherwise thin resume (to the consternation of other longer serving reps and senators) He played it safe by voting ‘present ‘ so nothing could come back to bite him in the ass, and pressed the WRONG BUTTON 6 TIMES on legislation that would benefit families and children, saying “oops I pressed the wrong button” He will say that he corrected the record, but his NO VOTES still stand/do not change.

He takes credit for being a part of legislation he had absolutely no input in or was a signatory to.

Re: Harvard Law Review I refer you to the following http://atlasshrugs2000.typepad.com/atlas_shrugs/2008/05/obama-mythical.html
And in an interview, one of his editors, said that ‘He wanted everyone to have a chance to talk at meetings, but I wished he would just make a decision and tell someone to do something’ Unfortunately I cannot find the quote.

He was a part time lecturer, not an associate professor.

The books, how do you know he did not have a ghost writer? They don’t exactly advertise the fact.

He worked on a voter registration drive under the auspice of his church.
    I refer you to:http://www.progressive.org/mag_reed0508

    So didn’t Hillary

He has backpedaled on Financing for his caampaign, FISA, he now says he is a free market guy, and The Iraqi foreign minister says that when he spoke with Obama he got the impression that he is like McCain on the issue of the war in Iraq. He has more Wall Streeters saying that they can really work with him. Now he is sounding like Mccain, saying, ‘oh sorry but those jobs are not comming back’
So as you are drinking your jumbo cup of Kool aid and salivating over the Hope/change message remember that those slogans were FIRST used in Massachusetts for Deval Patrick’s campaign and absolutely NOTHING has changed except he traded in the governor’s Ford for a Caddy Escalade at taxpayers expense.

Therefore, I respectfully submit: NOBAMA, NOWAY.
    PUMA

How do you know he wrote his books without a ghost writer? Most of the bills he passed in the IL Senate were ghost writtten–by years of work of other Senators. Look it up.

  • http://obamafact.blogspot.com/ Mel

    He’s a fake what?

He’s a real US Senator. Actually hasn’t served a term, so isn’t a full US Senator

He really does have more years in elected office than Hillary Clinton. Part time for 10 yrs, working only 55 days/yr in Illinois does not compare with 8 yrs full time in the US Senate!

He really was editor of Harvard Law Review.
Only one never published, but used the race card to get elected!

He really did teach constitutional law at one of the top law schools in the country. Part time lecturer, not a Professor, giving a few lectures a yr, big deal!
He really did write two books without a ghostwriter. You really want to bring up his books of lies?

He really did organize citizens in Chicago. And took credit for things he never did, well pattern for him huh?

He really did raise money from 2 million citizens and begin a huge voter registration drive. Acoorn did the drive and prove he got 2 million donors, or used prepaid credit cards to fake new donors, and till you can prove he didn’t, then based on Obama’s honesty and his practices, he did, or else he’d let the FEC see his records, which he won’t!

  • ritamary

How did he become a US senator? He ran against a carpetbagger candidate Alan Keyes after the original candidate’s sealed divorce records were mysteriously released to the public. How did he become an Illinois state senator? By eliminating all the other candidates through challenging their petitions, with campaign money from convicted felon Tony Rezko.

  • http://Lynn Spiritof76

When a candidate removes his/her name for the ballot they warn NO votes. For a committee to decide the mind of the voters and award delegates on that basis is unconscionable. If they could read the minds of the voters, they could as easily read the mind of Obama and then they’d have known that he removed his name for political reasons.

  • ritamary

Why didn’t Obama agree to redo the primaries in Michigan and Florida then? Because he knew Hillary would win?

  • Linda C.

I believe there was a snow ball’s chance here. The SD’s had to either side with the system of pledged delegates that had no bearing in the general election, since it had failed so many times of getting us the white house or abandoned their failed system. They decided to go with their failed system.

Senator Clinton also realized how difficult it was going to be to elect Obama. His funny interlude with his own seal just shows his inexperience regarding politics. His inability to think on his feet. His poor showing in the debates and then choosing to run away. He is already race baiting in Florida.

  • ritamary

But Obama surrogates did not accuse male candidates and their spouses of being racists, or call them bitches, f#cking whores, c*&ts or send death threats to them or their supporters. Nor did Obama surrogates tell the other male candidates to drop out of the race. Nor did Obama surrogates mock the male candidates and their spouses. Nor was there a 24-7 media blitz again the other male candidates and their spouses. So there is a bit of a difference.

  • nickoury

You know “Democrat,” I’m beginning to actively dislike you, which is very unusual for me. Under First Amendment rights you of course have a right for your viewpoint to be heard, but I wish you’d air that viewpoint somewhere else. Sigh, sigh. Still, if wishes were horses beggars would ride. I guess I’ll just have to skip your posts because they’re so unremarkable.

  • drkate

not so fast there democrat. Obama had favors done for him, just like MEchelle at the UChicago. he was a lecturer.

He was the first Harvard Law Review lead to NOT EVER WRITE A PAPER. After Obambi, they changed the rules to require that.

Not so distinguished afterall. He is the perfect example of everything that is wrong with affirmative action. Skated through with no work and on full scholarship.

  • Linda K

I love your post!!! Thank you, thank you!

  • Linda K

I meant those words of thanks to Linda not to “Democrat.” I, too, am tired of listening to meaningless comparisons of Barry to great people. He is not a great person. Hell, he’s not even a very nice person. Democrat, if you want to compare your candidate to Malik or Odinga, Rezko or Ayers or Wright have at it. Stop insulting great leaders who are dead and therefore cannot defend themselves.
