    How antichoice is John McCain? Let’s look at his record. In his four years in the House, from 1983 to 1986, he cast eleven votes on reproductive issues. Ten were antichoice. Of 119 such votes in the Senate, 115 were antichoice, including votes for the ban on so-called partial-birth abortions and for the “gag rule,” which refuses funds to clinics abroad that so much as mention abortion. In 1999, the year he said he opposed repeal of Roe on health grounds, he voted against a bill that would have permitted servicewomen overseas, where safe, legal abortion is often unavailable, to pay out of their own pockets for abortions in military hospitals.

    His record on contraception and sex education is just as bad. He voted against a 2005 budget amendment, sponsored by Senator Hillary Clinton, that would have allotted $100 million to reduce teen pregnancy by means of education and birth control. He voted to require parental consent for birth control for teenage girls and to abolish Title X, which funds birth control and gynecological care for the poor. He voted against requiring insurance companies to pay for prescription contraception, when they pay for other prescription drugs–like, um, Viagra. The beat goes on, and on. With a handful of minor exceptions (he voted to confirm prochoice Surgeon General Dr. David Satcher after voting against prochoice Dr. Joycelyn Elders), he has a just about perfect antichoice record, including votes to confirm the Supreme Court nominations of Thomas, Roberts and Alito.

    As for his 1999 pro-Roe remark, he has retracted it many, many times. Here he is on Meet the Press, May 13, 2007:

    Q: Back in 1999…you said this: “Certainly, in the short term, or even the long term, I would not support repeal of Roe v. Wade, which would then force X number of women in America to undergo illegal and dangerous operations.”

    A: Well, it was in the context of conversation about having to change the culture of America as regards to this issue. I have stated time after time after time that Roe v. Wade was a bad decision….

    Q: But if Roe v. Wade was overturned during a McCain presidency, and individual states chose to ban abortion, would you be concerned that, as you said, X number of women in America would undergo illegal and dangerous operations?

    A: No, I would hope that X women in America would bring those children into birth and into life in this world.

    If that’s not clear enough for you, how about this: “I do not support Roe v. Wade, period. It should be overturned” (Associated Press, February 18, 2007). Or this, from his campaign website: “Roe v. Wade is a flawed decision that must be overturned.”

    As the Bush years have shown, the President has a tremendous amount of power; Supreme Court nominations don’t begin to describe it. He nominates all the federal judges (302 since Bush took office). He appoints the heads of dozens of regulatory agencies, many of which (HHS, FDA, National Institutes of Health) directly affect women’s lives. He submits legislation and the budget to Congress. He has a veto. Bush, we all know, has filled the government with right-wing Christian hacks and family-values fanatics, with room left over for incompetent cronies. He has done just about nothing good for women. McCain’s record suggests he would not be any different. His opposition to the Ledbetter Act, which would have overturned the Supreme Court’s restrictions on women’s right to sue for paycheck discrimination, tells you everything you need to know about where he stands on economic justice for women.

      They are fighting a losing battle. Obama’s word is absolutely meaningless.

      He got his votes by telling every faction what they wanted to hear and then reversing it depending on what the latest trends of the next primary voter base he needed to win wanted.

      If they think they weren’t pandered to and then tossed under the bus over the General Petraeus ad, then they are too far gone for reason.

      He was for Exelon and against Yucca. He is for and against Nafta, or anything that will get him votes.

      And as a con-man he is good at covering what a sham he truly is.

      Screw them for their fascist vote rush job on who to support and for doing it way too early and before vetting took place. That they sprung and decided on over night with clear signs of voter fraud. They deserve to be the darlings of the backstabbing DNC theives.

      I unsubscribed to moveon the day after they railroaded the vote for OB and am so glad I did. Now I can see how dangeous and powerful they are and how they don’t deserve any power at all.

      Soros can have his own frigging bus, he can have a whole fleet of them all to himself.

    PUMA, Just Say No Deal, etc. are all great groups, but their efforts will be wasted if they don’t wake up.

    They state that they do not agree on what to do in November. 1. vote McCain 2. stay home 3. write in Hillary.

    Listen, if you do #2 and #3 you might as well vote for Obama. While Obama’s campaign is registering 500,000 AA in Georgia to beat McCain, PUMA, etc are saying they just can’t decide what to do.l

    Better wake up – all of your anti-Obama rhetoric is worthless unless you put your vote where your mouth is.

      Judy, there is a whole lot of time between today and November. We all find our own way of making decisions on our own time. And things will just start really heating up when the conventions arrive.

      I had a very gradual u-turn and came to my personal conclusion after much research and hard felt decision soul searching.

      I started as a lifelong democrat who would NEVER even watch FOX and always voted downticket Dems.

      Step by step my whole world view changed. The more I saw the more actions I took to reverse my long held views. It is not an easy switch flip.

      I was very upset for a long time with the DNC but I just wrote a few letters and waited till May 31st – hoping that perhaps there would be righting of wrongs. I printed out the change of party form but it sat there till after the RBC meeting.

      That was my last straw for changing to unaffiliated.

      So far I have signed up for McCain’s web site and am very wide open and appreciative of his ideas. I’ve also started to defend him against obot lies.

      And since I am appalled by obama and know from many years of watching Nader voters the best way to defeat obama is to vote for McCain, I have resolved to do so. But it was NOT a simple jump from one state of mind to another. It took me months of serious reflection and further research.

      So be patient with the PUMA’s, we are individuals – we are not a robotic movement.

      I came to my decision in the end over one simple motto that I could relate to:

      America’s best interest first.

    I agree with Karen for Clinton, its not an easy decision for life long democrats. I have to say, I am relieved that the republicans chose McCain as their nominee, he’s definately an American patriot and more moderate then some…imagine if they’d picked George Allen?? YUCKYPOO!

    I’m glad the repubs selected McCain, too. He’s really the only republican I can vote for. I decided today that this democrat is voting for McCain in November.

      Me too! He is probably the only Republican that I could vote for with a clear conscience. I have heard good things about him on a personal level.

      By the way, McCain was apparently the only former colleague who bothered to visit this former Giant of Senate. Says a lot about the man!

    Karen for Clinton – well said.

    However, I am very concerned about Obama’s chicago political machine.

    If we truly believe that the DNC and Obama are not getting our vote – then, again, I think it is a no brainer what we have to do. It is the ONLY way to get our message to the DNC, and put our country before party.

    My heart broke today, Hillary made a public appearance at a graduation. Honestly, I didn’t think she looked good. I remain a strong Hillary Clinton supporter, but we must be very reallistic here.

    Personally, I believe Obama will self destruct or the 527′s will end this for us, but until then I stand strong on my resolve to VOTE FOR MCCAIN. As Obama’s campaign strengthens – we must strengthen our resolve and WORK TO MAKE SURE HE DOES NOT GET IN OFFICE.

      I agree that EVEN IF Hillary were to somehow overturn Obama’s stranglehold on the Democratic Party, she would have a very difficult time getting elected because of the fury of Obama’s supporters. Best she try another time. In the meantime we really have to stop the insanity of an Obama presidency. Not voting, writing in Hillary or voting for Nader won’t do the trick.

    It’s starting to make more and more sense to vote for McCain.

    McCain will be a one-term prez.

    McCain will have his hands tied by a Democratic Congress.

    McCain will not touch Roe v Wade.

    The Iraqi Prime Minister said, after talking to Obama by phone, that there is basically no difference between McCain and Obama on Iraq.

    McCain may not have an abundance of knowledge on the economy like Hillary does, but Obama has no knowledge on the economy. Obama even put down Clinton’s GREATEST ECONOMIC EXPANSION IN HISTORY.

    McCain works well with both sides, Obama has destroyed his own party. He is in no way a uniter, he can’t be trusted, he has been proven to be a flip-flopper and a liar, and he uses thugs and corruption to “win”.

    More and more voters are going to McCain and leaving Obama.

    They shouldn’t advertise pumapac.
    My sense is that it is a Troll blog trying to
    get max publicity and money, and acting in the least ineffectual manner.
    The people operating that blog seem to be around 14 years old. Look at their logo.
    On Father’s Day, as their main thread, they invited readers to write about how much their father meant to them.
    Their focus seems to be on writing to Howard Dean and DNC, to ask them to change.

    Agree. When I was still watching MSNBC during the earlier primaries, and when Brokaw was part of the nightly panel, he remained the only voice of sanity on the screen. Better Brokaw than Williams. Brokaw’s body of work and legacy are bigger than Obama’s and Brokaw will protect his own legacy first.
