I live near DC and had a relative traveling there that day (for other reasons) who had no trouble getting a last minute hotel reservation, traveled on the metro with no problems or waiting, and said the city certainly didn't seem like a BIG rally was going on -- say like an inauguration day or an anti-war protest.
