[Updates] What?! There’s Yet Another Tax That Average Workers Will End Up Paying For???

Just how f##king stupid and naive do Barack Obama and Congress think that middle- and lower-class citizens are? Especially Finance Committee chair Sen. Max Baucus (D-Mont.)?

Unless you’ve just fallen off the turnip truck, you learned a long time ago that ANY new business tax will end up being paid for by YOU and ME because health insurance companies will make up for staggering new taxes by:

(1) increasing premiums, upping co-pays and/or deductibles (e.g., the first annual $2,000 instead of $1,000), and/or

(2) cutting back on current benefits — e.g., the number of annual physical therapy sessions, annual doctor visits, and/or annual blood tests, MRIs, x-rays and biopsies, and on and on.

Beyond the 35% surtax on companies that sell “Cadillac” policies, we learned today on Fox News’s Special Report with Bret Baier that the Max Baucus plan will force insurance companies to pay an additional ANNUAL $6 BILLION FLAT “FEE”:

BELOW, you’ll find another video on how average workers will end up paying for the taxes on the insurance companies, and a prominent Democratic U.S. Senator — yes, a Democrat! — describes why the Max Baucus plan is so dangerous for workers, especially workers who are in unions:

This flat tax on 100% of all health insurance companies is in addition to the 35% surtax on companies that sell “Cadillac” policies which, it’s critical to note, include almost all UNION health insurance plans. This 35% surtax isn’t exclusively for plans given to executives. This 35% surtax will be paid by ALL MIDDLE and LOWER-MIDDLE CLASS EMPLOYEES of ANY MAJOR COMPANY that offers good health care plans, no matter how modest the salary of employees, even janitors, cafeteria workers, secretaries, file clerks, and on and on.

The only way that these health care insurance companies can stay afloat — under the weight of these huge new taxes — will be by greatly increasing workers’ out-of-pocket expenses and by greatly reducing the high-quality coverage of the better health insurance plans.

Anyone employed by a major corporation — say, from General Electric to Boeing to NBC to industries that employ workers who are members of unions — will see a dramatic shift in both their annual out-of-pocket payments and in a drastic reduction of services currently covered by the health insurance companies.

There’s no doubt in my mind that we need to get the word out to the middle class citizens of this great country who have to pay more for their health care plans and very likely face cutbacks in the quality of their health care plans.

EVERY ONE OF US must write to our Representative and to our Senators.

………………………………………

UPDATE: From ABC News’s The NoteDem Senator Warns of ‘Big, Big Tax’ on Middle Class in Baucus Bill“:

It's not every day that you hear a Democratic senator charge that a fellow Democrat is proposing to raise taxes on the middle class, but that is what happened on Tuesday when Sen. Jay Rockefeller, D-W.Va., ripped into the health-care bill developed by Sen. Max Baucus, D-Mt., the chairman of the Senate Finance Committee.

The Baucus proposal would impose, starting in 2013, a 35 percent excise tax on insurance companies for "high-cost plans" — defined as those above $8,000 for individuals and $21,000 for family plans.

[...]

Given how much money this kind of tax can raise, [Senator Jay] Rockefeller says he understands why it is "tempting."

The West Virginia Democrat worries, however, that a lot of middle class workers, like the coal miners in his state, will end up facing "a big, big tax" under the Baucus bill because they currently enjoy generous employer-provided health care benefits which they receive tax free.

Referring to Baucus, Rockefeller said, "He should understand that (his proposal) means that virtually every single coal miner is going to have a big, big tax put on them because the tax will be put on the company and the company will immediately pass it down and lower benefits because they are self insured, most of them, because they are larger. They will pass it down, lower benefits, and probably this will mean higher premiums for coal miners who are getting very good health care benefits for a very good reason. That is, like steelworkers and others, they are doing about the most dangerous job that can be done in America."

"So that’s not really a smart idea," Rockefeller continued. "In fact, it’s a very dangerous idea, and I’m not even sure the coal miners in West Virginia are aware that this is what is waiting if this bill passes."

Rockefeller made his comments on a conference call with reporters which was sponsored by the liberal Campaign for America's Future.

Rockefeller, who sits on the Finance Committee, said that he cannot support the Baucus bill unless it receives major improvements during the amendment process.

[...]

What Jay Rockefeller says here is CRITICAL:

In fact, it’s a very dangerous idea, and I’m not even sure the coal miners in West Virginia are aware that this is what is waiting if this bill passes.

These creative ways of paying for the health care bill are truly dangerous. And it’s frightening to realize that probably most Americans are completely unaware of this dangerous plan.

And here’s a video that is the frosting on the cake (h/t Linda Anselmi and to firedoglake’s YouTube video):

  • Chicago Joe

I have been writing my representatives about all of these issues, including the news on health care. Being that I am in Illinois, it is a complete waste of time, as the Obots who represent me could give a flying fig about what my opinion is. It really is disgusting to see the robo-letters I get telling me that they could care less about voter opinion because they are committed to this or that.

Better luck to the rest of you. Please try to make a difference.

  • Tammy

Throw the bastards out of office.
There is going to be a bloodbath in 2010, and I don’t just mean Democrats.

Anyone who votes for this crap is GONE, no matter what party.

    I have had it.
Chicago joe, I feel for you!

  • yttik

Yes, but look on the bright side! We’re starting to get that bipartisanship President Obama was wanting. We’re uniting about how sucky the plan is.

Baucus health plan slammed by left and right

  • Linda Anselmi

    Thank you Susan!!

This is such a bad plan. I can’t believe this is what they came up with and seriously thought it could get passed. Unbelievable!!

  • http://www.sonicninjakitty.wordpress.com Sonic Ninja Kitty

    Bronwyn–Thank you for the information.

These people canNOT be so stupid. It is all their corrupt ties causing them to put forth such idiot garbage. They must be completely removed–then we’ve gotta sanitize the capital building. They are like a disease.

  • Peggy Sue

Well, I finally heard a poll on “working” doctors, 65% of whom are strongly opposed to the current healthcare proposal and 45% of whom said they would seriously consider closing their practices and/or retire early. [Investors Business Daily]

Pretty much contradicts the WH and the stats on the AMA.

If that’s the case, the shortage in doctors we have now will be made all the worse. So, those extra “clients,” who will be mandated to sign-on for insurance or face a fine [in addition to all these extra costs]? They’ll also be scrambling for a doctor.

    What a complete disaster!

  • jwrjr

Anybody still wondering why Ozero and the Obamacrats were so anxious to get this crap passed without anybody having a chance to read it?

  • Ginger

Suthin’ stinks and it ain’t just Baucus’s plan. My guess is that his plan is similar in what the REAL plan is except that he actually verbalized it. Oooo… and the other Dems are po’d cause he let the cat out of the bag…

  • Right on the Left Coast

But, remember, this isn’t about putting private insurers out of business. It’s about competition…yeah, right.

Also, remember, if you like your current employer provided plan, you get to keep it. Ha!

Well, I’m one of those people with a “cadillac” plan through my non-union employer. Fully employer paid, no co-pay, etc. When the insurance companies have to pass on the costs to the employers, they will need to reduce benefits in order to continue to afford to provide the coverage options to employees. That is, of course, until they choose to exercise their fiduciary duty to shareholders and drop the employer provided plan altogether and just pay the 8% of total payroll tax and dump the people onto the public option.

I would have more respect for our elected officials if we just had an open and honest debate about single payer vs. expansion of health savings accounts and true insurance market reform (national portability, major medical only options, detached from employment, etc).

This whole thing is an unmitigated disaster. It demonstrates a complete lack of leadership by our President. It’s as though he has never held an executive level position before.

  • don tufts

well he hasnt and he has never relly worked like most of us do.

  • Jackarooty

I understand your sentiments fully. I live in Massachusetts. ‘Nuff said about that…

  • Karma

That is what I was wondering about also.

Was his plan written to intentionally fail or is this the real plan?

Sadly, I think the latter also.

  • bayareavoter

I have been complaining about this for months. And I’ve written to my rep and Senators but will do it again.

If we want health care reform EVERYONE should pay for it–just like social security and medicare. You can’t just tax the middle class to pay for the so-called 47 million uninsured.

It really burns me that the middle class won’t even benefit from this tax!

Why won’t they come up with a plan that everyone pays for and everyone benefits?

Americans hear about “free” medical care in the UK and Canada and don’t realize that Canadian income tax is 48%!! And that’s still an underfunded system–but everyone pays into it.

It doesn’t even have to be universal single payer–Germany and other industrial countries control costs and impose tight restrictions on insurers and subsidize those who need help.

The Dems really screwed this up. I really think Hillary was actually the only person who could have gotten real health care reform passed.

  • Postulate

How many times are you going to rewrite the same article before you realize even the dopes on this blog aren’t falling it for it this time?

  • HARP

And they just confirmed this guy??

It is “desirable” to redistribute America’s wealth to poorer nations, argued President Obama’s newly confirmed regulatory czar, Cass Sunstein.

According to Sunstein, global climate change is primarily the fault of U.S. environmental behavior and can, therefore, be used as a mechanism to redistribute the country’s wealth.

    CAROL HAKA

  • kenoshamarge

Don’t count on it that it won’t pass. Can the Democrats garner 51 Obamacrats to ram in through on reconciliation?

  • glennmcgahee

The 2010 elections will be sponsored by Blue Cross/Blue Sheild. Every winner will have their own grecian columns to get sworn in under. Thats all that matters to these politicians, the next election cycle. After the last one, it’ll be more expensive than ever. They need the money and know you and I don’t have any.

  • Touchet

This is why this will pass. I have always said this. If you read the bill, under section 243, there is a table that explains how much one is expected to contribute. Once you make around 80,000 dollars a year, you are expected to contribute 11% of your income to the premium. That doesn’t include any costs out of your pocket.

They do have cost credits, but they are determined by your age and LOCATION. Now, I wonder what areas the health commissioner appointed by Obama will select to get a reduction in price?

In the end, the health industry will benefit greatly from this bill, as it will be required by law that you have health insurance. And if you think that your insurance company you have now, won’t up your price to match the government plan, you are crazy as a bat.

So this bill, in short, is government sanctioned health insurance rip off.

And like some previous posters, we all know why this bill will pass. They will give those who vote for it mega mulah to run and election campaign.

I have enough of these so called representatives. I think its just about time something be done about them.

  • tek

The first problem with all of this is the timing. Obama should be working everyday to alleviate the recession before he tries to push through new programs that will necessarily cost billions. We don’t have billions, we don’t have anything in the treasury. Talk about raising taxes at a time when thousands of people are losing their jobs is irresponsible in the extreme.

I notice he wasted no time giving black churches and black neighborhoods all the relief they need through the expanded Faith Based Initiative and the Neighborhood Project, but if the hard-working middle classes want any necessity of life benefits we have to pay through the nose.

Really, I would love to get out of this country.

And OT: I see the corporate milk companies in this country are finally succeeding in destroying the small, organic dairy farms all over the world–with the aid of our Congress.

  • tek

Joe: also in IL. I sympathize totally. I’ve gotten every form letter Dick Durbin has in his file. My rep is from southern IL but I get the same crap from him–a Democrat.

Still, I keep writing Durbin just to needle him. He admitted in a speech at John Marshall Law School last week that Obama’s candidacy was totally his idea. He told Obama he HAD to run for president and try to beat Hillary Clinton. Then Durbin endorsed Obama to make sure he would announce a run. See, inside job. The Dem men didn’t want a Clinton who would not condone their corrupt agenda.

  • AF catfish

OK even if you’re FOR the Baucus plan, the reason people are up in arms over the health care debate is any bill will bring on BIG CHANGES in the lives of the middle class. We in the middle class have been racked by many BIG CHANGES lately and we JUST WANT TO KNOW WHAT BIG CHANGE TO EXPECT NEXT SO WE CAN PREPARE FOR IT.

It does not make us racist to want to know what the freak healthcare “reform” is going to look like. For the love of god, Washington, Obama, Congress, MSM, we are not racists – have a heart, we just want to know how we’re going to get screwed next. Can you blame us? We may even endorse getting ourselves screwed, but we just want to know. OK? Have a heart and stop calling us racist!

Change is fine but no more surprises! Please!

  • jangles

What US wealth? Has he not noticed that there is no more US wealth to distribute?

  • tek

I’m very much afraid that by the time Obama gets done, the middle class won’t be the middle class anymore–we’ll be broke. That’s his Jeremiah Wright philosophy–all the white people’s money should be given to the blacks (and latinos). There also will no longer be a white majority in this country. Obama would love to change that.

  • tek

What is he talking about “redistributing” our “wealth.’

Seriously, say what you will, these people are communists.

  • Mountainaires

Jesus. I cannot believe this country. We must be the stupidest people on the face of the earth. Sometimes I just want to scream at the absurdity of it all.

This whole thing is nothing but a windfall profits bill for Big Pharma and Big Insurance. This is exactly what Obama did in Illinois, too.

We’re getting screwed. Thank God I’ve got a Tricare option available. I feel sorry for the vast majority of Americans who don’t. Thanks, but I’ll stick with my GOVERNMENT RUN HEALTHCARE.

I’ve been watching this debate play out and the more I listen, the more I think we’re going to regret ever having this “health care reform.” It’s not HEALTH INSURANCE REFORM at all, and it’s only going to end up costing us all a lot more money to pay for the profits at the other end.

The more I know, the more I support single-payer government run health care. Since when did Americans come to believe that doctors don’t count, when it comes to their health care? I’d rather pay a doctor to treat me than pay a corporation to tell the doctor how to treat me. Since Bill Clinton and the Republicans introduced the concept of the HMO. Remember how well that worked out? Not. So, here we are, still sucked into the “insurance” scam regarding our health care.

This whole debate is all wrong. We’re stupid in this country, incredibly stupid, misled by myths about Britain and Canada. Worried about rationing of care?

Insurance companies ration care far worse in this country than government does in those countries, because they deny up to 30% of all claims–that’s how they make their PROFIT; and PROFIT on your medical misery is what they are all about!

When will Americans wake up. If we’re going to pay more money for health care, we’re better off paying it to be able to GET HEALTH CARE. The way we’re doing it, we’ll be paying more and getting nothing because it will all go to profits.

  • Chicago

    “Obama should be working everyday…”

that’s something that will never happen. when did Obama ever work? everything has been handed to him on a platter, he never had to work for anything so why start now?

On the matter of another tax to be passed on to people, is there ever any doubt that Obama and all the democrats under his spell would try this? since day one of the presidential campaign, all Obama ever did was state his aim to distribute wealth. raising taxes is the main mechanism in distributing wealth, hence we hear all of this new tax schemes that the administration wold be pushing for.

the only way to save this country and the hard working people being slammed by all of these unfair wealth distribution scheme is to vote out every politician that is calling for raising taxes on anything!

vote them out then lets start over. after voting them out, each and every citizen in this country need to start pushing congress to go back to the gold standard of currency and keep the dollar strong. lower taxes for all families, individuals, and businesses, no bailouts (if the company’s officers are stupid enough to get their companies in the red then let that company fail), no funding for criminal organizations like ACORN, eliminate the national debt, and bring back the gold standard!

  • BARB

Early in July 2009 the ObamaCare bill included an amendment by Baucus which included taxing employer provided healthcare benefits….except for union members and their families. At some point after the public was made aware of this…the amendment went to never-never land…but I would not be surprised if it resurfaced in the middle of the night. Afterall, according to some reports..unions contributed over $400 million to elect Democratic candidates. Maybe some of us need to be reminded of who Baucus is.

Dems To Tax Health Benefits … Unless You Join a Union

    by Vin Suprynowicz

Where your health benefits premium now comes off your paycheck before taxes are calculated, that part of your income would now be taxed, reducing the size of your paycheck, overnight.

Sen. Baucus told reporters Tuesday that taxing employer-provided benefits – except for union shops – is “perhaps the best way to raise money for an overhaul of the health-care system” the Washington Post reports.

    (SNIP)

As Kimberly Strassel writes in the Wall Street Journal, “Mr. Baucus intends to tax the health-care benefits only of those who didn’t spend a fortune electing Democrats to office. …”

“In short, it’s little more than a political payoff to unions for spending $400 million in campaign cash to elect Democrats to Congress and the White House last year. As if the outrageous favors they’ve received from the auto bailouts aren’t enough.”

First Baucus is no dope he knows what he is doing. He knows that he has very limited support BUT! And Jay Rockerfeller tells you what Baucus is really up to…

“Rockefeller, who sits on the Finance Committee, said that he cannot support the Baucus bill unless it receives major improvements during the amendment process.”

Can you say “Mark Up Session”… Its going to become interesting in a few weeks…

stay with your government healthcare then. the government can’t even run medicare and medicaid properly and you expect them to run a national health care system efficiently?

the answer in fixing a bad private health care system is not to replace it with an inefficient, bloated, and cash thirsty national health care system. if you have a systemic problem, you find out what’s wrong with the system then you fix the system, not replace the system.

fixing health care in the US should involve Tort reform and real competition. people should have the chance to buy insurance from across state lines. doctors shouldn’t have to be paying hundreds of thousands of dollars in malpractive insurance. drug companies shouldn’t charge an arm and a leg for drugs in the US and turn around and sell them cheap in other countries. hospitals should not charge three times the price for a does of aspirin.

if you nationalize health care, you will see doctors quit en masse (this happened in Canada, I know, my wife is Canadian). what happens in an industry when you take out competition? you will see mediocre people going into the medical field, the brightest and smartes will move on to other fields. I’m sorry but if I’m going to have surgery, I want the smartest person to perform it and not someone who simply went into the field since it’s a guaranteed paycheck from the government!

you folks only need to look at what happened to the medical sectors of countries that adopted a nationalized system to see what will happen to our medical system once it is nationalized. how hard is that to do? really?

what better proof, go to Cook County Illinois and see how Stroger Hospital (formerly Cook County Hospital of ER fame) is functioning. people that go there for routine exams spend the whole freakin day waiting! that hospital loses millions every year, and although there are good people working there, there are many more idiots working in that hospital compared to all the other private hospitals in Cook County (there was once a scandal there where the nurses and other staff were taped dancing the hours away, on taxpayer money! sorry, but if your salary comes from my taxes, you have to work to earn it). that’s one major legacy from the democrat machine in Chicago and Cook county where your president Obama came from.

common sense really isn’t that common at all, isn’t it!

  • Chicago

don’t forget to add that they TWO national sales taxes to support their “free” health care costs as well. then after getting all that “free” health care, a lot of their patients are sent to the US for major procedures! how great is that for Canadian residents?

what others also fail to point out is that a couple of years back, Canada made a change in their health care in that if you are working, you are now required to pay for health insurance as well! in the end, all Canadian residents got are higher taxes, low quality health care, and higher health care cost for those who are employed. good deal, eh!

  • Sassy

Since Obama couldn’t re-form a two man marching band, why is anyone surprised about this disaster that is unfolding!
If Americans don’t see it now, they will when they are one bed away from a morgue gurney!

  • Prime Obot

Why does everyone keep conflating the Baucus bill with Obama and Democrats in general? Baucus is a joke. He is essentially a paid employee of the health insurance industry. There is no chance that his bill will go anywhere; it has no Republican support and very little Democratic support.

If you want to see where genuine progressive Democrats stand, check out what Howard Dean had to say today:

    http://www.dailykos.com/story/2009/9/17/783349/-Howard-Dean-BLASTS-Baucuss-Crappy-Health-Bill!!

We are going to get a good bill with a real public option that will lower costs and help millions of Americans. That’s what every intelligent, caring liberal is rooting for, that’s what has by far the most support among Democrats in Congress (the entire Republican Party is a joke and has nothing productive to add to the discussion), and that is what Obama will wind up supporting, through reconciliation if necessary.

  • Prime Obot

The Democrats can indeed pass a health care bill through reconciliation, but there is no chance that the final bill will resemble anything like the Baucus plan. It has no real support among members of either party.

  • Prime Obot

Will everyone stop talking about the Baucus bill as Obama’s bill? IT ISN’T. Not even close.

  • Donna Brazile

    Prime Obutt!

Who died and made you hall monitor?

    Stop the commandfest!

  • Prime Obot

Fair enough. No commands. But I do suggest that people bear in mind that the bill under discussion comes from one Senator who couldn’t even get the members of his own party, in his own committee, who supposedly had been working on this with him for months, to support it. This bill is meaningless, except perhaps to focus people’s minds on the obvious choice Congress has to either serve the insurance industry (as Baucus’ bill does) or serve the American people (which the progressive House and Senate bills do). Most of all, the pressure is on Obama. How much guts does he have to push for a smart, strong, progressive bill that includes a public option? We’re about to find out.

  • Onofre’s arm

Prime Obot, you should consider changing your name to “Reflection Pond”. Your posts are merely representations of a fancy facade that has been raised to hide an unsightly pile of garbage. In your unrippled flatness, you could acurately reflect the apotheosis of the entire Obama affectation of styrofoam columns. But just like a pacific reflection pond, you are unable to alter or criticise that which you reflect, and you’re also quite shallow.

Through your posts you’ve displayed unquestioning support of ALL things Obama, and my post was not just insult, it is an accurate description of the mindless attitude of someone who has succombed to a cult of personality. and I will only consider engaging you when you answer the challange the I already presented to you. You parroted (which is all you ever do) Obama by not only claiming that the recession has ended, but that it has ended due to the stimulus bill. I challenged you to provide me with the names of noted economists that will stake their reputations on the accuracy of those claims. Your response …..crickets.

Now, why don’t you back up the claims in your post with some facts instead of stating your OPINIONS or NOTIONS as though they were facts.

Provide imperical evidence that Baucus is being paid by the Ins. co’s.
Define what an “intelligent, caring liberal” is, and how they differ from other intelligent, caring individuals.
What do you mean by a “good” bill. That’s rather subjective, don’t you think? Is it possible that what might be good for you, might be anathema for someone else?
Do you expect the entire world to blindly accept ANYTHING that Howard Dean says as gospel? Who (besides you) gives that nitwit any credence anymore?
Provide rock solid tangible evidence that this nebulous multi-bill will “lower costs and help millions of Americans”. What crystal ball do you use to direct the direction of your life?

Your posts are little more than the bubbly mindless shouts of a middle school cheerleader; “Your team sucks, our team rocks! Hooray”. And the funniest spectacle of all, is watching you frantically shaking your Obama pom-poms in front of a crowd that is increasingly aware that your team is an abyssmal, cheating, lying disgrace.

  • Onofre’s arm

When you write,”..that is what Obama will wind up supporting”, aren’t you begging the question, “What the Hell is he supporting and huckstering RIGHT NOW?” You’ve just admitted that you haven’t any proof that there exists a single, concise, particular bill that Obama supports. So why the Obama saturation in our lives if not to simply push through a currently amorphous yet extemely partisan and odious powergrab by the most opaque administration in history?

He’ll “wind up supporting”? This sort of implies that he lacks volition, or at the very least, that he lacks any solid principles, he’ll simply sign any unread bill that crosses his desk just as long as it was brewed in a Democrat cauldron.

I will concede one thing to you, there is a strong possibility that an unseen hand does have to wind him up, or at least slap him now and then to get him out of his hopey changey narcotic trance.

8% of total payroll tax and dump the people onto the public option..

This what caught my eye right of the bat.

I ask any business person out there, if they know what that 8% means to their business and at what point would it become “just a cost of doing business”. I imagine that if this ever is made law, the very next law that passes is a tax credit to zero out the difference. What will be left is the off loading of health care into a Gov run program.
