A New England preacher had a young man in his congregation who showed some promise so he decided to test him to determine his optimal career path. So he went into the young man’s room and put a Bible, a bottle of rotgut whiskey, and a Playboy magazine in plain view. Then he stepped back and waited to see what would happen.

The young man entered the room, saw the Bible, and put it under his arm. Praise the Lord, he will be a man of God! the preacher enthused. Then the young man saw the bottle of whiskey, popped the cork and chugged it down. Oh no a drunk the preacher dispaired. Finally, the young man picked up the Playboy magazine and stated looking through it. Oh no the preacher thought–a womanizer!

Then the preacher reflected for a moment on what he had seen, and more important what it meant in terms of the young man’s future career. Let’s see now . . a hypocrite, a drunk and a womanizer . . . by God I do believe he will run for Congress! And if perchance he also happens to leave a young woman to drown at a place called Chapaquiddick somewhere along the way, then he could even become Lion of the Senate!!!
