Very Difficult Time In The Asia Pacific

This week. We have a tsunami in American Samoa and Samoa, with a typhoon hitting the Philippines. Add to that an earthquake, a MAJOR earthquake, in Indonesia. Sadly, many lives have been lost as a result of these natural occurrences.

Here is a good recap of what has happened during the past week from the American Red Cross:

It is hard to put into words the depth of destruction that has occurred in these areas. Below are a few videos to give you an idea of what has happened in these countries. These are not easy to watch, and tragically, many lives have been lost. But it is important for us to know what has happened, and how we can help.

A brief report from the AP on American Samoa and Samoa follows here:

A major earthquake hit Sumatra:

And this is a glimpse into what has happened in the Philippines:

There are many, many more videos available online at Youtube.com, if you wish to see more.

If you want to help, donations can be made to the American Red Cross Donations are also being accepted by Oxfam America, and other worthy organizations.

My thoughts and prayers go out to all those in these areas, for their safety, for those who have been lost, and those who are missing. My prayers also go to all of those brave souls who rush in to help in these situations. Truly, they are heroes…

    Thank you Amy!
Media coverage of these disasters has been limited. Perhaps that will change as the damage assessments are complete.
I read today that in Samoa, many victims will be buried in mass graves, for they can’t return the bodies to ravaged villages. That is really sad…yes, prayers are in order!

The founder of Coast to Coast radio program, Art Bell (yes,I’m a big fan), lives in the Philippines. He called the on air show last night. He and his family are fine, but he said the ENTIRE COUNTRY has been declared a disaster. Typhoon Parma was suppose to be on its way, but Art said he checked the weather before going on air and that Parma was backtracking toward them again.

Thank you for writing about this RRRA. I lived in SE Asia when the 2004 tsunami hit and it was devastating to see the destruction first hand. My family had a reservation to spend that Christmas at a resort that was hit by the waves, but we changed our plans a few weeks before to come visit family in the U.S. for the holiday instead. As I watched the horror on tv I saw so many places that I recognized and watched one wave over and over on the tv hit a seawall of a hotel we had stayed at a just few weeks before. It is so sad for all those who went to bed peacfully and woke up to a nightmare. My heart goes out to all those affected by the devastation of last week’s events.

Thank you so much for sharing your personal experience of the area. It must be so hard for you to watch what is happening there now, especially with the prospect of Tyhoon Pharma.

I saw this morning that they expect the body count to double in Indonesia…

I understand there are thousands of people missing…Breaks my heart.
