Quote of the Day: “Obama the Vain”

From “An Olympic Ego Trip,” George Will’s column today on the Obamas’ Copenhagen speeches:

Both Obamas gave heartfelt speeches about . . . themselves. Although the working of the committee’s mind is murky, it could reasonably have rejected Chicago’s bid for the 2016 Games on aesthetic grounds — unless narcissism has suddenly become an Olympic sport.

In the 41 sentences of her remarks, Michelle Obama used some form of the personal pronouns “I” or “me” 44 times. Her husband was, comparatively, a shrinking violet, using those pronouns only 26 times in 48 sentences. Still, 70 times in 89 sentences conveyed the message that somehow their fascinating selves were what made, or should have made, Chicago’s case compelling.

That’s not all that Will has to say:

Here’s more of Wills’ critique — and it’s both devastating and hysterically funny:

[M]eaningful sense is often absent from the gaseous rhetoric that makes it past White House editors — are there any? — and onto the president’s teleprompter. Consider one recent example:

Nine days before speaking in Copenhagen, the president, addressing the United Nations General Assembly, intoned: “No one nation can or should try to dominate another nation.” What was the speechwriter thinking when he or she assembled that sentence? The “should” was empty moralizing; the “can” was nonsense redundantly refuted by history. Does our Cicero even glance at his speeches before reading them in public?

Becoming solemn in Copenhagen, Obama said: “No one expects the Games to solve all our collective problems.” That’s right, no one does. So why say that? Then, shifting into the foggy sentimentalism of standard Olympics blather, he said “peaceful competition between nations represents what’s best about our humanity” and “it brings us together” and “it helps us to understand one another.”

Actually, sometimes the Olympic Games are a net subtraction from international comity. But Obama quickly returned to speaking about . . . himself:

“Nearly one year ago, on a clear November night, people from every corner of the world gathered in the city of Chicago or in front of their televisions to watch the results of the U.S. presidential election. Their interest wasn’t about me as an individual. Rather . . .”

It was gallant of the president to say to the Olympic committee that Michelle is “a pretty big selling point for the city.” Gallant, but obviously untrue. And — this is where we pass from the merely silly to the ominous — suppose the president was being not gallant but sincere. Perhaps the premise of the otherwise inexplicable trip to Denmark was that there is no difficulty, foreign or domestic, that cannot be melted by the sunshine of the Obama persona. But in the contest between the world and any president’s charm, bet on the world.

Then MO says that she used to sit on her Fathers Lap watching Carl Lewis and Nadia. She was 20 years old, what the hell? They have no clue on what they are saying they just read what is handed to them.

  • Hank

My bad, she was 25 years old, sitting on her fathers lap. I guess she thought the IOC wouldn’t verify her age.

  • Docelder

That was a good article. To me maybe the thing that overshadows the narcissism is the “plastic” nature of this man. When everything is manufactured then what is real? When nothing is real, then is there really nothing substantive in there? Is there a great man in there, or just the symbol of a great man? Is the brand anything more than creative marketing? He won’t speak without a teleprompter, delivering only material provided for him. He won’t act without a poll, and won’t risk anything for principle. Maybe the “brand” is the man and the man is the “brand”. If that is so, then is the office itself now more ceremonial? Do we have a de facto royal family?

Will has been slammed by the left for saying this, but really, the left have said nothing enlightening (or honest) about Obama since he came into their campaign consciousness. At least Will, and I am certainly no fan of his, says the truth as it is. That’s more than the approving pablum the left provides.
We’ll take our exposures, observations and truths about this regime wherever we can get them. Which side is Will on? It doesn’t really matter at this point. Same for Beck. If these people are willing to do the work to ferret out the skullduggery, crime and corruption of the Obama folks, I am willing to listen.
Why do people even bother to watch/listen to msnbc? You’re only going to hear the same thing over and over and over….Obama is great, Republican want us all to die. Ridiculous on it’s face and unworthy of response.

Nadia Comaneci won the gold in the 1976 Olympics. MO was born Jan 17, 1964: she was 12 1/2 years old.
Carl Lewis first won the gold in 1984: MO was 20 1/2 years old.

It’s possible she has confused the better known Lewis with the amazing Jim Hines, who won gold in 1968 (when she was 4 1/2 a more likely age for sitting on her father’s lap), the first time the Olympic 100m was run below 10 seconds (9.95) a feat that was not duplicated until Carl Lewis in 1984 (9.99) or surpassed by Lewis until 1988 (9.92).

I don’t doubt that both the Obamas are narcissists; I don’t doubt that their bid for the Olympic games was an attempt at payback for the Chicago mob crowd that helped finance BHO’s selection. I’m glad the Olympic games went to Rio. But how many freaking articles does one need to say this?

WTH has happened to this blog and (outside of Mr. Doyle’s informative economic articles) where is the real news?

Vain, nepotistic and narcissistic are now the words being used to describe the leader of the free world.

And here I thought Bush was the worst America had ever seen. Now this.

It’s not that Barack Insane Obama is a vain narcissist but that his wife is also full of herself. Just look at the gold dress she wore to Copenhagen. Seriously.

Now the free world has to endure these couple for the next three years.

  • to77

“It’s possible she has confused the better known Lewis with the amazing Jim Hines, who won gold in 1968…”

Are you serious? This wasnt a casual conversation. This was a speech, most likely not written by her, and undoubtedly reviewed by staff for the purposes of convincing the IOC to give the olympics to Chicago. You dont just “confuse” the facts on something like this. I am not sure she was lying but she was being incompetent. These people are not just narcissists they are incompetent.

    A DANGEROUS combination.

I don’t like that term “dead common.” What does “common” refer to? Working class people. So this phrase is implying that somehow the upper class are better than the working class.

The Obamas are not “common.” If you want to use a class analogy, they may be “nouveau riche” but common they are not.

Don’t insult commoners! Working class people are generally good people.

Regarding the MSM, I was just scanning the major websites of the likes of ABC News, CBS News, The WaPo and the NYTimes to see what take they’d be having on the ARORN press conference this morning. Here we see the standard response which is no criticism allowed. Get it. Do not address the subject in any manner that the person is discussing. Go straight to the insults and name calling to bully and marginalize if anything remotely critical or amusing is said. This has reached the pathetic stage.

  • Ferd Berfle

[M]eaningful sense is often absent from the gaseous rhetoric that makes it past White House editors — are there any? — and onto the president’s teleprompter.

OMG. Someone in the MSM finally got it. How long have the writers and commenters said the same thing? His frat-boy writer purveyor of platitudes knows nothing about prehistory (you know, ca 1988 B.O) or about substance, in any of its manifold forms. And That One obviously either allows his TOTUS to perform the perfunctory reviews or he, himself is a truly pedestrian speechwriter, having only passing familiarity with both persuasive writing and standard English.

Neither of those two duds could write a high-school valedictorian speech that would pass muster.

  • Judy L. NC

Great catch! MO is full of BS—but we knew that.

  • Ferd Berfle

I don’t know what set the automated comment shredder off this time but why am I surprised? Can an administrator please rescue my comment from the dustbin?

  • Ferd Berfle

And that is the crux of the matter. Their writers are stupefyingly lazy and think of anything pre-1989 as ancient history, unknown to anyone else but us fossils. And BO and MO probably don’t even look at the wretched dreck until it’s show time, which by then is too late. But even if they did actually read that garbage, they would love it because it’s all about THEM, factual accuracy be damned.

  • Lyn

They don’t bother with silly things like “facts” because for the most part, they can lie all they want and noone will call them on it. There were so many things in PREPARED speeches (not even off the cuff remarks they could have made an honest mistake in)that not only were lies, but easy to find the truth, without much digging, like Obama being born because of Selma, but the MSM let it all slide because it made for a good story, who cares if the story is a bunch of made up crap, the powers that be wanted Obama so both Obamas and their writers never worried about whether they were telling bold face lies, it isn’t like they would have to worry about the MSM reporting they lied again.

When I read Wills column last night, I passed it around to a few people because finally someone was reporting what we’ve all seen for close to 2 years now.

Wow–that is quite an article. As it states, the translation is a little rough, but it describes how the Chicago delegation left in a huff, not at all in keeping with the spirit of the games, when they did not win. They also left all of their equipment behind for the hosts to clean up. It’s well worth checking our this article. From me, two comments:

    1. Isn’t this just like 0 to leave behind thousands, perhaps millions, of dollars of equipment, with no thought as to how it was going to be paid for/replaced?

    2. Did he ruin the U.S’s chances to get the Olympics for quite some time with his little temper tantrum??

Hank, you give them too much credit – I think the Copenhagen speeches in particular were written by Michelle and Barack. They wanted these games in the worst way, for whatever reason, and they wanted to put forth their very best efforts to deliver for Daley and/or themselves. And that’s why we saw this tone deafness they shamelessly exhibited.

They are clueless that very few people thrill with the regifting of their personal successes much less giving personal reasons as to why bringing the Olympic games to Chicago would be good for all.

  • FranSC

Docelder, I think they are real! And that’s the problem. Certainly people should be accepted and given credit for being themselves. But, when you rise to the level of president and first lady there are expectations that you have the skill level to fulfill these positions – not only intellectually but socially.

These two simply do not understand how you, for example, work an IOC committee. They do not get how you make your case without mentioning yourself. They thought it was about convincing the committee of THEIR value and THEIR worth. Their social skills in a word are pathetically lacking. Not that Oprah is an expert on this, but she could help them with this if she has the guts.

Yea for George Will! (This time anyway, I certainly don’t agree with his comment about Clinton, since slick willie is the right’s moniker, the Dems think of him as Big Dog) Finally, someone with the cajones to say what needed to be said about the Obamas. I think that people are slowly catching on, and then I hear on the news, that Obama’s approval ratings went up. That has to be bullshit. America is not that dumb. (I hope)
