The Nobel Peace Prize? [Updates]

For what? [See the NBC video below -- even the Today Show noted that reporters "gasped" when they heard the news.]

I just awakened (West Coast) and turned on the TV. I’m nearly speechless, and barely awake but I had to post so I could get your reaction. I thought it was a joke at first! This as the President is under intense pressure to expand the war in Afghanistan and more U.S. soldiers have died. As Obama has ordered innumerable drone strikes and whacked god knows how many civilians? As he’s endorsed the Bush treatment of detainees, denied detainees due process (rightly or wrongly), and failed to close Guantanamo? Huh. Writes the blogger at Riehl World View (he’ll be on BBC at noon ET), “Are you frickin’ kidding me? What a stupid joke. What a worthless award.” Allahpundit at Hot Air adds, “[T]hey gave him a Nobel for … being Hopenchange-y.”

What on earth has Barack Obama done except to please liberal Europeans by not looking like George Bush? Is there any other conceivable reason he could have won this “prize”?

From the UK Times article, “Comment: absurd decision on Obama makes a mockery of the Nobel peace prize:

The award of this year’s Nobel peace prize to President Obama will be met with widespread incredulity, consternation in many capitals and probably deep embarrassment by the President himself.

Rarely has an award had such an obvious political and partisan intent. It was clearly seen by the Norwegian Nobel committee as a way of expressing European gratitude for an end to the Bush Administration, approval for the election of America’s first black president and hope that Washington will honour its promise to re-engage with the world.

Instead, the prize risks looking preposterous in its claims, patronising in its intentions and demeaning in its attempt to build up a man who has barely begun his period in office, let alone achieved any tangible outcome for peace. …

The second thing my mind leaped to was the self-aggrandizing speech that Jon Favreau will be writing as well as the incessant coverage on TV when he goes to Oslo to receive the award.

The reactions on the blogs are endless and most are in a state of shock.

Astounding, isn’t it? I feel like I need to go back to bed and try waking up on the right planet.

    • Ginger

Geez. After Bush getting the nom and now Obama actually getting one, that really makes them none too special if those two dodos can get in the mix.
Maybe they will be marked down soon and we can all pick one up at the dollar store.

      • Count Crash

Spot on target Ginger, I can’t wait till I get mine for the most potatoe chips eaten on a recliner while watching repeats of Racheal Maddow and not puking.

soon they will be in boxes of cracker jacks

“…The Nobel committee recognized Obama’s efforts to solve complex global problems including working toward a world free of nuclear weapons.
“Only very rarely has a person to the same extent as Obama captured the world’s attention and given its people hope for a better future,” the committee said.
Jagland said the decision was “unanimous” and came with ease.
He rejected the notion that Obama had been recognized prematurely for his efforts and said the committee wanted to promote the president just like Mikhail Gorbachev in 1990 in his efforts to open up the Soviet Union.
“His diplomacy is founded in the concept that those who are to lead the world must do so on the basis of values and attitudes that are shared by the majority of the world’s population,” it said.

      • jwrjr

Given what you have highlighted, how does that apply to Obama? He is unable to be diplomatic yo his non-supporters. As for the rest of the World sharing his values, what drugs have they been abusing (Hopium, I suppose)?

      • Katmoon

How could they recognize anything two weeks into office? That is when the nominations closed. I would love to know what person decided he needed to be nominated.

        • Ellen D

Two weeks into office is the key – here is a post from the Times of London blog that I think sums it up:

Mr. Obama was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize after wishing for World Peace. He narrowly beat out Miss Japan and Miss Croatia who, during the Miss Universe competition, also wished for World Peace. However, both the runner up contestants for the prize lost out during the swimsuit competition to Mr. Obama.

          • Katmoon

Are you serious? This is rich. Thanks Ellen. :)

            • http://deleted BuzzisbackLatte

The Times UK sums it up best. Just how much longer are people going to take stock in the empty and false awards given to undeserving idols? This is a new LOW!

      • lark

First of all that is meddling big time in the political affairs of the people of the United States. It not only explains clearly why the Right defines Obama as an appeaser but it shows why exactly Obama is completely and totally UNFIT to be President. The fact that he is President simply was the result to too many idiots voting for him and believing every stupid lie he vomit during the course of the last election cycle. What the Nobel Price committee has done is render Obama even more ineffective and incapable as President and thus exercising unappreciated influence in our country’s political affairs. For that I now despise them and hold them in contempt. The Noble Price committee should be dishonorable censured by Congress.

      • Jean

        Bella,
Clearly you are a cookoo Obot. The man has been in office for 10 months now and hasn’t done a damn thing except give speeches. He is continuing the legacy of George W. Bush by “leading” (and I use that term loosely) a war in two countries where thousands are dying. That hardly promotes world peace. “Capturing the worlds attention” doesn’t equate to diplomacy.

        • Bella

By the way, if the Noble Peace Prize is such a joke, it is totally ridiculous, it has no credibility whatsoever…why the hissy-fit??
Why is it bad that the President of the USA gets an international award?
Why do you hate America? :-(

          • barry bums a ciggie

Because it’s a downright MEAN country.

maybe you should write a letter to Meeeechelle and ask her why she, hubby, Ayers, Jones, Wright hate America.

            • Bella

And you wait for your puppeteers Limbaugh and Beck to put their paws up your behind and speak for you, you don’t have your talking points right yet.

              • TeakWoodKite

                Bellaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa.

Go Play with Lilly the skimmer, who’s’ head hurts from the jargon and Prime Obot.

Do you not get that BO has done O for this award? He himself said he did not deserve it. YEA BO? THEN GIVE IT BACK! But you know what Bella? He won’t! Because when it come to taking a principled stand BO is a chicken-shit.

One week the IOC shoots him down because he is not socialist enough and the next he gets a peace prize for do “JACK SQUAT”.

                ARE KIDDING??? TGIF.

          • Mia

Obama is not America. Some even question if he qualifies as an American.

          • Jean

            Oh Bellla,
You are so deranged its not even funny. The point is Obama’s ‘win’ has made the Nobel prize a joke. If capturing the worlds attention and just wanting world peace were the stringent criteria for the Nobel Prize then Britney Spears would have one by now. There’s got to be some proof in the pudding so to speak. His pudding is flat and dried out. There’s been no action deserving of this award on Obama’s part, plain and simple.

          • Nellie

            Bella,

You are plainly seriously “strung out” on some type of drug.

The questions that are pertinent here are:

            1. How much did George Soros pay the Nobel Institute to fully destroy their own credibility with this “choice” ??

            2. When was it decided he would get the award, since final voting took place on February 1, 2009???

For the thinking ADULTS at NQ, here are the contact email addresses so you may express your knowledgeable opinions and reactions:

              Lark,

          • elizabethrc

And why, Bella, are you so willing to see America destroyed? Surely you can see that Obama is America’s Neville Chamberlain. He is an appeaser who delights in pointing out America’s perceived faults and apologizing around the world for us. I daresay none of us gave him permission to apologize for us.

The next time I go on a job interview, I’ll use the same criteria the committee used: I haven’t done any work yet, but I am sure that I will do a simply great job and you should give me the job because I have every intention of successfully doing what I’ve never had experience doing before.

You take ‘lamebrain’ to new levels of ridiculousness.

When Obama destroys your little world, you’re going to suffer fully as much as the rest of us, but you’re so busy sniffing the ether you don’t stop to realize the long term implications of his presidency on our country. That certainly doesn’t look like love of America to me!

      • http://firefox Martha Washington Collier

I suppose one could say that Adolph “captured the world’s attention” and initially seemed to “offer hope for a better future.” Sadly, that didn’t really pan out for many of the world’s population.

Well, we have been comparing him to Jimmy, the peanut farmer. May he continue the same path.

        • ReddFoxx

I was just thinking Adolf should be nominated for and awarded the next Peace Prize for the remarkable restraint he’s shown lately, as in this incident:

          http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vECSyaegm1U

It certainly is a more deserving fairy tale than Obot’s.

      • http://firefox Martha Washington Collier

Not sure the Taliban hold to all those nice platitudes. Now that 0zer0 has suggested they have a seat at the Afghanistan table, I pity the poor women in that sad country. BTW, 0zer0′s representative also thinks Sharia law is “misunderstood”. Do you welcome the US under Sharia law? Death to homosexuals, stoning for adultry, hands chopped off for theft? I am a law and order proponent but this cruelty is beyond comprehension. How will you, oh, liberal bella, live with that?

      • Mountainaires

        Translation:

YAY. THE AMERICANS ELECTED A BLACK MAN PRESIDENT. NOW THE UGLY LEGACY OF SLAVERY IS OVER. OUR MESSIAH HAS COME.

        Sincerely,

    • avwrobel

Man. I actually had some (not a lot) of respect for the Nobel Peace Prize. They awarded it to Obambi to ‘promote…’, not for actually having done anything. The committee has rendered the award worthless.

      • Onofre’s arm

It’ REALLY no big deal, it only validates my long held opinion that the Nobel prize has become a joke, an ultra liberal joke that is played on true peacekeepers.

My fears of hyperinflation have now been realized however. Obama’s head has now inflated to the size of a hot air balloon, so he’ll not need Air Force One, he’ll simply float over to Oslo to pick up the prize (a giant head, but a tiny carbon footprint, He truly DOES deserve a prize!)

        • ReddFoxx

Is it possible for him to have a tiny carbon footprint given the amount of eh… exhaust perpetually flowing from his mouth?

          • Ferd Berfle

Yeah, that tailpipe on either end of him sure gets a workout, whether he’s off-gassing on the one end or passing gas on the other.

just a few days ago, you guys were overjoyed because Chicago lost the bid for the Olympic Games.
Now you’re mad because the President of the USA was awarded the Nobel Peace Price.
Let’s see, who else is not happy?

“Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid, speaking to Reuters by telephone from an undisclosed location, said it was absurd”
“Liaqat Baluch, a senior leader of the Jamaat-e-Islami, a conservative religious party in Pakistan, called the award an embarrassing “joke.”

Bella, what you don’t get is that this premature and brazenly gratuitous prize diminishes this POTUS. Aren’t you concerned about that? How does this award help him? Indeed, it only confirms his vacuous and unaccomplished presidency.

        Nobel Peace Price.

        PRICE???

Now Bella, I am the first to say my typing sucks, but the letter c an z are seperated by an x….the x is stuck to your forehead.

So you are saying BO payed for the award?

Bella as far as Zabihullah Mujahid and Liaqat Baluch saying it was an absurd joke, that just indicates that it is.

      • Ferd Berfle

Now you’re mad because the President of the USA was awarded the Nobel Peace Price [sic].

This is how the rest of the narrative will play out:

          Obama’s acceptance speech in Oslo: “Hope … change …. I … me … me …. me… me … I ….”

MSM’s reporting of BO’s Oslo speech: “Historical … groundbreaking … the greatest ….”

    • CB

He’s gonna give another SPEECH! I hope that Jon Favreau twenty-something who writes them is INSPIRED! Favreau’s speeches during the primary reminded me of the writings of a teenager seeped in Faulkner. Now Faulkner did deserve a Nobel. They were delivered by a huckster. Now he seems so tired and bored that his every utterance is clipped.

As for the speechifying, why not just don a superman costume and move his wrist up and down while rasping “Yes, I can! Yes, I can!”

Too ridiculous to even consider that this man has won anything. It all started with hiring someone to remove all opponents from the ballot for his first state position, and continued when the sealed divorce records of his Dem and then Republican opponents were revealed (by whom?) so he could be catapulted to Senate by default. As an author of two books about himself, he went to Washington as a self-defined “rockstar,” but soon became bored with policy (it was not about him), and made a beeline to Teddy to reveal his real aspiration–being President.

Then his handlers ran the most divisive primary that I know about, and stole the nomination. Finally, in office, he is just more of the the nothing he has always been (and continues to serve those who line his pockets), but not George Bush.

      • b mathews

there has never been a president and first lady who are less deserving of being in the WH than these two. seems they are only interested in the perks of the office but not the work. they can pretend all they want that they won the election fair and square (that includes the primary the he literally stole from hillary with the help of acorn)), but many of us know the truth and will certainly remember it come election time.

  • elizabethrc

When may I expect my Nobel Peace price to arrive in the mail? Surely it must be on it’s way because I have fully as much accomplishment as Obama!

Is this the same Nobel commission which gave Yassar Arafat and Jimmy Carter the price? Who the hell are these people, anyway? What has Norway given the world over the decades except some great ski jumpers?

This takes the cake for the most absurd, over the top misdirection of the prize since it’s inception. They have made themselves a total laughingstock and Obama will be preening even more than usual.

Now, Obbie, put up or shut up!

    • Ani

There is a line from the play “Les Liaisons Dangereuses” that I have been quoting more these last nine months than ever….

“…applauding the tenor for clearing his throat.”

      That says it all.

      • FrenchNail

        Ani,

To encase the ground meat of a sausage you take the outer membrane of the intestin. That outer intestin membrane is called a BAUDRUCHE.

During Carnaval, for centuries, People used to take that membrane, close it at one end, inflate it with HOY AIR, and close it at the other end. Then they used to paint grotesque characters with inflated heads or bellies to float them during the parades.

Now an obnoxious and stupid person is called a Baudruche is the French language, which translate to windbag.

      • lark

But does the rest of the world and “them” love America as we do and love to worry about the future of our American children? Do they? Or do they more than not hate America and want our children to become dependent on them and someday starve to death as they have had to do so many times in their history?

We cherish our country and pray and want to save it from going broke and see half of our people starve to death and the other half commit social suicide.

        • sowsear

And we’re also paying the bills, now and into the next hundred years.

Maybe the rest of the world likes to see America on her knees. Or think Hope & Change is a strategy? Or have all gone mad.

Whatever the reason, giving an award for non-accomplishment is running on empty. But then, you Obamatrons know all about that, don’t you?

Btw, start peeking at the polls [not just the good ones]. We are not on the fringe. The Independent slide should be of particular interest to you since neither party and/or candidate wins without the Independent vote. And the Dem-controlled Congress? The real story is that nominations were closed Feb 1. 0bama had been in office 10 days. And there were over 200 people and/or organizations nominated. Maybe he only had 3 votes. Who knows?

      It was unanimous.

Bill Clinton or Bono not Obama deserved Nobel Prize
    By Niall O’Dowd

“The Nobel Prize committee has decided to punish George Bush by awarding his successor the Nobel Prize.
That is the only conclusion I can come too when the head-scratching verdict of this year’s Nobel Prize winner was announced.
The hatred for Bush was profound in Europe and it seems the global outreach Obama has done since he took office a mere 10 months ago has achieved mythical status already in Europe.
The widespread approval for Obama’s policy is warranted, the Nobel
Prize is not. Frankly where are the great foreign policy achievements?
Compare Obama to former President Bill Clinton whose global initiative has stemmed the tide of AIDS in Africa, has raised billions to fight previously incurable diseases and who dedicated himself in office to solving the Middle East – almost – and Northern Ireland where he played an invaluable role in the peace process there.
Or think of Bono the global crusader for Africa who like Clinton on Africa has raised hundreds of millions for the cause and energized millions of young people to think beyond themselves and give back to the world.
Both men would have been profound and deserving choices for the Nobel Prize.
Last month I interviewed former Irish president and UN Human Rights chair Mary Robinson about the impact of Barack Obama since he took office.
She immediately referred to his now famous Cairo speech where he reached out to the Muslim world and carried the olive branch that had been missing during the Bush era.
Robinson had been traveling in the area during the period on her own humanitarian work and had been well-placed to assess it.
She said the speech had been transformative and overnight the image of America had shot up in countries where under Bush it had been at its lowest point ever.
I thought of that conversation when the Nobel Prize committee awarded its top honor to President Obama.
I understand where they are coming from – mainly delivering a belated kick in the pants to former President George Bush I think, but it is far too early.
Obama has been wonderful on rhetoric but understandably short on delivery as he has been in office less than a year.
In the Middle East it has been very tough going, with no tangible success In Afghanistan and Pakistan the war drums still beat.
In Iraq a shaky civilian government still has much to prove.
It may well be that in a few years Obama will have brought peace and stability to those war torn regions.
But the Nobel Prize this year has been awarded for rhetoric not results.
Bill Clinton and Bono have a reason to be annoyed.”

  • Freedom Fighter

Barack Obama is as good and even better than other world leaders (Jimmy Carter, Yasser Arafat, Al Gore) who have received the Nobel Peace Prize. I can’t think of a reason why he should receive this reward, unless you are a racist.

    • ~~JustMe~~

Right I can’t think of a reason why he should receive this reward,

      You said it FF

      • cathnealon

        FF
Don’t you hear someone calling you to come and sing

        mmm Barack Hussein Obama mmm

    • CentralMass

Jimmy Carter brokered some pretty serious peace agreements to earn his. Obama has done nothing tangible. Unless getting elected a speakingh in front of a camera 12 hour a day counts.

      • Don

“speakingh in front of a camera 12 hour a day counts.”

Now let us be honest. How about reading in front of a camera 11 hours and 50 minutes a day and hemming and hawing 10 minutes!

    • jdona

We’re racists because we thinkt he Peace Prize should be awarded based on concrete accomplishments, is that what you are saying? What has this man done? Nothing. What did he do the first 2 weeks of office that even deserved or indicated he deserved, a nomination? People work for years and years to make a difference in this world, most on shoestring budgets, or no budgets, and accomplish a whole helluva lot on a little bit of nothing, think Mother Teresa here, and they deserve this award. What in the hell did Obama accompish in 2 weeks, or in 10 months, that even rivals that? Please, do educate us racists here!

      • lark

But the good thing is that this is truly a day were lots of change will be happening. Lots and lots of people will change they way they view the Left and how the Left creates value where there is none. Millions of people all over the world will see clearly the meaning behind the award. We need those sort of things to happen to give clarity to the purpose behind the Left and what is it that they are trying to accomplish; the transformation of values into meaninglessness.

    • Onofre’s arm

You’re right Frito Farter, Obama IS better than Carter, Arafat, and Al Gore, but so are dung beetles, buzzards, slugs, and cockroaches.

    • TeakWoodKite

Reason is not your strong suit.

Maybe as he said, he doesn’t deserve it?

Did it ever occur to you that this is a form of bribery, if Obama accepts the money or award while in office?

The award is the property of the American people and the money? Freedom Fighter, when are ya gonna learn what it takes to be a human? Never mind a leader. A leader would know there are other more deserving. As much as Bon was an asshole to a friend of mine while she was working a gig of his, he still has done more than scrub Rezko’s ass.

A commenter on “Market Watch” named “sellmyfuture” posted the following remark:

When Henry Kissinger won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1973, the distinguished musical satirist Tom Lehrer decided that he could no longer perform.

“It was at that moment that satire died,” says Lehrer, “There was nothing more to say after that.”

      Yep

oowawa, my sentiments exactly. I said, good news / bad news. Bad news, BO won the Nobel Peace Prize. Good news, Henry Kissinger did, too.

Bronwyn’s Harbor, thank you for letting us blow off steam. Up at 5:00 am here on the east coast and couldn’t wait for someone, anyone, to wake up, to share the news. AFTER I paid homage to former Chicagoan Curtis Cooper, who will be 3 (three) years old, forever.

See, I knew there were multiple dimensions, just like they said on “The Elegant Universe,” with string theory.

  • Martine

It would be interesting to know who sits on the nominating committee and more about the process. I suspect there are some familiar influences there. I certainly have no respect for the Nobel prize anymore. It is a slap in the face to people who have really sacrificed and WORKED for peace. This demonstrates that the prize is for star power and back room hi-jinks by the Chicago polticos I am sure.

  • Woodhull

I predict yet another “Time Magazine Man of the Year” issue. Unbelieveable.

This seals it for me: The Nobel Peace Prize means absolutely nothing and the committee has fallen for idol worship.

A joke of the worst kind.

The ego has landed, indeed. Welcome to the International Age of Celebrity.

    Ugh!

  • creeper

    My reaction? Unf*ckingbelievable.
Maybe the Nobel committee felt sorry for him after the IOC snubbed him. This must be the first time in history the Nobel was a consolation prize.

This man doesn’t even know what PEACE means. Maybe he got it because he runs peaceful elections, and his honesty and transparency.
Oh here we go he is going to start reading on receiving the POS prize.

  • ladynite54

And other thing. Watch the White House other hand, remember Rahm Emanuel, never let a crisis go to waste.

What is really going on here, when did Obama know about this, I am sure this is no surprise to him. Remember during the primaries when he would trot his super delegates out to up-show Hillary. He had the super delegates in his back pocket for weeks but would only trot them out at certain times when he wanted to get the focus back on him.

He’s doing the same thing now, after the embarrassing lost of the Olympics he had to trot this out, and show us the world really do love him. Gag me with a fork. Help I am trying to wake up, I know this is a dream if I could only open my eyes. But watch his other hand, something is brewing behind the scenes, and it’s not going to be pretty.

The one in office for 2 weeks gets a prize. There’s nothing Nobel about that?

  • Margaret

WHAT? I must be dreaming. Please tell me this is all just a very bad dream, and Hillary is President.

    • tango

Shit, Hillary has done more for human rights and peace than Obama has even thought about putting in a speech.

Basically to win a Nobel Peace Prize all you have to do is give speeches that you want peace and better relations with other countries and then meet with them a few times.

I’m sure the winners of the Nobel Prize for Physics will be some scientits who had a theory or idea, gave a speech about it, met with a few others and talked about what they wanted to do and then waited. I’m sure they didn’t actually go through the steps and actual work to accomplish and complete what they set out to do – they just said they wanted to do something and invited others to join them and that was probably good enough. Right????

Let’s hear what TOTUS has to say about it all:

      http://baracksteleprompter.blogspot.com/

      • jbjd

A “theory” in physics is not just a guess. It is a premise based on experimentation, which has real predictive value.

      • lauraks

Well all he had to do was give a speech when he wasn’t even a sitting senator against the Iraq War and the American people voted him in as president. The man had no experience and he was made the commader in chief. This really isn’t any more ludicrous. The American electorate opened the door for the Nobel Peace Prize Committee to walk through. My concern is for the death of merit as a determination of success.

  • SJ

Imagine this joker is coming on the media this morning I guess proud as a peacock at his great achievement, my god I think we have all gone nuts, this is unbelievable to say the least.

Today a wonderful variable has been given to all of us that will help us solve the Chaos equation. And the lucky break is that it will help tremendously not only the Right but the Left too. This variable which can be called the Noble Peace Price (NPP) is one that comes in the most of Postmodern tradition as an Unexpected variable and it will not only help define the dialogue but simplify it by helping the Chaos equation move towards a more stylized conclusion.

The good thing for all of us in the introduction of the BONPP is that it will give us the ability to [explain Why] to answer the question: Why?

What I laugh the most is at poor Hillary. Here BO stole again something from her that she was aspiring for and had worked thousands of hours to deserve. But chauvinism and fate will again strike and chop her ambitions. I am glad though. It is only her faulty that BO got as far as he has; her’s and stupid Ted Kennedy. But I have to laugh at life. It is just so funny.

    • beachnan

WTF Lark. Are you blaming Hillary and Kennedy for Obama. That’s ridiculous. The stupid American Idol electorate is to blame for Obama.

  • ImaLlindatoo

OMG OMG I cannot believe that. What a f@ckin’ joke. Thank Nobel PP you have just make clear you are a joke. I never would have expected that.

Obama? You must be f@ckiing kidding me. The man who has back tracked from his promise to end our occupation of Iraq within a year, gets elected and agrees to follow Bush’s policy. The man who has increased Drone attacks and killed more innocent people from them in the first 4 mos of his administration than Bush did all of last year and now wants to increase them as his tactical strategy in Af/Pak? You MUST be kidding..

Another old saying comes to mind. Give them enough rope and they’ll hang themselves..

Now when mentioning Nobel PP, everyone will grone and roll their eyes. Such a shame.

    • ImaLlindatoo

BTW, now everyone knows why he sat on General McChrystals request. He knew he was up for the Nobel PP and he just played a game with all our military and lives of the Aghans.

Now will be even sweater to hear his call. That will finish off the Nobel PP. Only end to all wars would fit. He lied about Iraq and now Afghanistan. What will he do? He SAID ending Afghanistan War was out of the question. So, either he increases troops or he increases the War with the Machines for GE/NBC.

Then we all can laugh at Nobel PP.

      • ImaLlindatoo

I just realized something. The Nobel PP has a habit of making their award a concession prize after the fact. They did it for Jimmy Carter and then Al Gore. Maybe that means we will be out of our misery on Obama soon. Well, not soon enuf they way he is governing.

      • http://firefox Martha Washington Collier

        The Nobel Wee-Wee.

    • lark

I think things like that are the stuff revolutions are made from. I like it that the younger generation have now some good ammunition to define what it is that they need to aim for. The Old World that was made by us and the generation that preceded us is DEAD. And what is great is that there is no hope for resurrection. The young generation has its work cut out for them. We just have to keep them in our prayers. They will need much more than prayer though, but that’s all they are going to get. We are just too greedy for letting go anything else.

      • ImaLlindatoo

        What an optimist!

Fitting the young will have to wake up and deal with this yutz, because they helped put him in from their ignorance and naivette…with the help of mature ingorant.

I guess the Nobel committee has been joining in on those schoolkids. What a howler.

    • creeper

dude, I think it was just nominations that closed eleven days after Obama took office.

Tried to load the nobelprize.org webpage to find out when the actual voting took place. It’s not loading. Evidently a few million other people have the same idea.

  • Obama: Dubya 2 Electric Boogaloo

LOL! The guy couldn’t even get Chicago the olympics and yet he’s credited with brining the world together in peace. What a fucking joke, both Obama and the idiots on the Nobel committee.

Well, now we see why Obama has been reluctant to escalate the war in Afghanistan. So did some unlucky troops pay the ultimate price in Afghanistan because Obama didn’t want to soil his Nobel Peace Prize?

  • SJ

Hey lets all look on the bright side maybe Obama will come on the media this morning and say thanks but no thanks I cant accept this award …… right???

Are you saying that a pathological liar will make up an exception and tell the truth once? Hardly possible if not impossible. The disease is unmitigated.

I don’t think Obama will be too peacocky. I think even he knows the award was premature and undeserved and I bet Axelrod is telling him play it cool. Even so, Obama probably still thinks it’s validation that he is “the one” and so I expect him to be somewhat pleased with himself.

I hope someone counts how many times he refers to himself in the speech kinda like how it was done for both his and Michelles IOC speeches. As if brokering peace is a one person job.

  • Katmoon

Brace yourself, as there will be no living with the supporters, nor the one himself. This fuel for the ego fire, and the ride is going to get a lot rougher now. Just so you don’t feel to awful know, that a single person can nominate/or a corporation lets you know just know political this is. further this may be a way of the international community trying to look good for the olympic brouhaha. further you know the one knew ahead of time, too cool and too little being done on the war, screams really loudly of pre-knowledge, and not wanting to tip the scales, so he could get this, thus the recent reactions to Iran’s nuclear program and lack of action since March on the war in Afghanistan, IMHO> Too many coincidences for my taste. Incoming: we will be further subjected to insults for not supporting this NPP recipient. I personally wrote this morning to the NPP and told them I thought they were quite wrong.

    • Onofre’s arm

Actually Katmoon, this may be too embarrassing for many obots. I used to wonder how the Soviet Olympic athletes could live with themselves when the Soviet judges gave them rediculous scores in judged events like diving, gymnastics, or figure skating. I do remember seeing shame on some of their faces when they knew they had been beaten, but their shameless judges gave them the win, and they had to accept gracefully or be sent to the Gulag.

I just forced myself to listen to what should have been a speech declining the prize, but I knew Obama’s massive ego would not allow him to do the right thing. It was a rather short speech filled with the usual sophomoric platitudes and endlessly recycled inspirational images, but even in it’s brevity, he still managed at least 15 mentions of “I”,”me”, and “my”. If Obama wasn’t a solipsist before, he sure as Hell is one now.

Gore just came out and justified the prize, what else could he do? If he pointed out the obvious, that Obama in NO way deserved it, he would in fact be raising the question about his own feable qualifications for winning it. History will show that Al Gore’s self serving and destructive battle against the myth of global warming has harmed far more people—especially third world people—than it has helped.

I hope that the more reasonable obots (yes, I know that’s an oxymoron) will realize the total farce that has just gone down, and admit that Obama has done nothing to deserve the prize. Of course, there will always be the Obama Army of bots that will attempt to justify the award no matter what, but those efforts will only serve to fully expose those Obomunists that are sooooo stupid, that if respiration weren’t semi-involuntary, they would drop dead from forgetting to breath.

And why, oh why did the reporters “gasp” at the announcement? They created this faux-leader with every fawning sentence, every blind eye. They should be giving themselves high-fives: we not only suckered the American public, we bamboozled the whole world.

  • Katmoon

    FYI:

Mahatma Gandhi was never awarded one (though he was nominated five times). In addition, in the fields of science, great men such as Nicola Tesla and Thomas Edison were not awarded prizes because of their animosity towards each other. If Tesla had won, the money would probably have prevented him from filing for bankruptcy in 1916, and the face of modern society may have been very different.

Bronwyn, we seriously need to start a letter writing campaign to the Nobel committee to let them know how they’ve discredited their entire reputation.

We need to list Obama’s acts of aggression as well as his lies. We cannot stand idly by. Can we use our collective knowledge to create a basic but comprehensive letter that everyone can use?

    • lark

Believe me this to me is god sent. You do not need to do any letter writing of any kind for any wasteful purpose. Believe me. The young generation can understand and discern a message like the one the Nobel Price has put up. They are the ones that need to fix their world and they better get to work on it before it is too late and the Muslims have taken it over. I wish them good luck.

The end of appeasement is tyranny and slavery. The case of the woman that adapted to her kidnapper’s control for seventeen years says the story. Adapting to the complete loss of freedom is not that difficult and billions are comfortably accepting it.

I guess that the Nobel committee vote was taken before Obama avoided meeting with the Dalai Lama by shoving him over to Nancy Pelosi. After all, we owe our well being and livelihood to China, don’t we? so how could he???

    • http://firefox Martha Washington Collier

I guess that qualifies Nancy for the prize next year. Especially since she has done -0 of any worthwhile work.

  • donjo

Well, I certainly intend to invent something earth-shaking or write a fabulous novel in the coming years. Or maybe I’ll have someone write me a wonderous speech I can read off a teleprompter. When can I expect my Nobel?

Someone commented that what’s most astounding is the lack of any achieved peace that can be traced back to Obama, except for making nice with Hillary!

    • lark

I don’t think Hillary is at peace with anything, much less Obama and how much he has stolen from her. The thing is that the Nobel Peace committee naively bought like so many American voters on every lie the pathological liar has produced.

      • Ladydawnelle

Hillary is too smart (imo) to NOT know all of BAMBI’s administration is ONE HUGE DIRTY LIE!!!

So if she’s too smart and KNOWS then she has now become an ENABLER and to me that’s just about as bad.

I’m tired of all the wormy excuses from the whole CABAL up there now. Including the enablers and the ones too chicken to say a word (also enablers).

“The award of this year’s Nobel peace prize to President Obama will be met with widespread incredulity, consternation in many capitals and probably deep embarrassment by the President himself.”

    **

Obama will feel ‘deep embarrassment’???? I hardly think so; the man KNOWS no embarassment, shame or humility! In HIS mind, I’m sure he believes he thoroughly DESERVES this prize (and the money)!

UNBELIEVABLE! This just cheapens and makes WORTHLESS the Nobel Peace Prize.

  • DAB

You can cast a vote regarding whether or not Obama deserves the Nobel Peace Prize here:

So far NO and IT’S PREMATURE are way ahead.

The poll seems to have disappeared-for some reason.

  • Diana L. C.

I’m sorry if I am repeating someone else’s comment. I turned on my computer this morning to see this news come up on my home page. I use MSN because I’ve had my hotmail account forever and wanted to check my email for the morning.

I couldn’t eat breakfast because I was upset. I DID find time to go to the poll they were taking on MSN about whether he deserved it. The No’s are way ahead. Vote everywhere you can to say no.

I can imagine BO using the prize money in some sort of humiliating way. I am too sick for words to describe.

    • Diana L. C.

They took the poll off pretty quickly. When I voted it was 62 percent no, but the yes vote was NOT 38. It was way lower because there were two other categories: not now, maybe later and no opinion.

This is what some foreign leaders are saying; they EXPECT a LOT from Obama AND the USA:

    http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20091009/wl_mideast_afp/nobelpeaceobamairan_20091009103407

    1 hr 28 mins ago

TEHRAN (AFP) – The Nobel Peace Prize awarded to US President Barack Obama Friday should prompt him to start working towards ending injustice in the world, an aide to Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad told AFP.

“We hope that this gives him the incentive to walk in the path of bringing justice to the world order,” said Ali Akbar Javanfekr, Ahmadinejad’s media aide.
“We are not upset and we hope that by receiving this prize he will start taking practical steps to remove injustice in the world.”

In particular, Javanfekr outlined two areas where he said Obama must act to prove he is worthy of the prize.

“If he removes the veto from the United Nations Security Council, then it shows the prize was given correctly to him,” Javanfekr said. Since first taking office in 2005, Ahmadinejad has called for an end to the veto power that the United States and the four other permanent members of the security council have over that body’s decisions.

Javanfekr also said Obama “has to say what he has done to narrow the gap between the haves and have nots in the United States and in the nations under US influence.

He must also show “that the United States has decided not to throw away its wheat surpluses but give them to African nations.”

This is inflaming this moderate and if it inflames me, all hell is going to break loose here which will polarize the nation even more. From:http://nobelprize.org/nomination/peace/process.html

Below is a brief description of the process involved in selecting the Nobel Peace Prize Laureates.

September – Invitation letters are sent out. The Nobel Committee sends out invitation letters to individuals qualified to nominate – members of national assemblies, governments, and international courts of law; university chancellors, professors of social science, history, philosophy, law and theology; leaders of peace research institutes and institutes of foreign affairs; previous Nobel Peace Prize Laureates; board members of organizations that have received the Nobel Peace Prize; present and past members of the Norwegian Nobel Committee; and former advisers of the Norwegian Nobel Institute.

February – Deadline for submission. The Committee bases its assessment on nominations that must be postmarked no later than 1 February each year. Nominations postmarked and received after this date are included in the following year’s discussions. In recent years, the Committee has received close to 200 different nominations for the Nobel Peace Prize. The number of nominating letters is much higher, as many are for the same candidates.

February-March – Short list. The Committee assesses the candidates’ work and prepares a short list.
March-August – Adviser review. The short list is reviewed by permanent advisers and advisers specially recruited for their knowledge of specific candidates. The advisers do not directly evaluate nominations nor give explicit recommendations.

October – Nobel Laureates are chosen. At the beginning of October, the Nobel Committee chooses the Nobel Peace Prize Laureates through a majority vote. The decision is final and without appeal. The names of the Nobel Peace Prize Laureates are then announced.

December – Nobel Laureates receive their prize. The Nobel Peace Prize Award Ceremony takes place on 10 December in Oslo, Norway, where the Nobel Laureates receive their Nobel Prize, which consists of a Nobel Medal and Diploma, and a document confirming the prize amount.

    Are the nominations made public?
The statutes of the Nobel Foundation restrict disclosure of information about the nominations, whether publicly or privately, for 50 years. The restriction concerns the nominees and nominators, as well as investigations and opinions related to the award of a prize.

    Obama Nominates Obama
Michelle Obama ’88 becomes first First Lady, first African-American Woman, Latest HLS Graduate Nominated to Highest Court
    By R. U. Reddi

    Published: Thursday, April 2, 2009
    Updated: Tuesday, September 29, 2009

    Justice-designate Michelle L. R. Obama ’88 in full robe
President Barack H. Obama ’91 shocked the nation today in a joint announcement with Associate Justice of the Supreme Court Ruth Bader Ginsburg by indicating that the cancer-stricken Ginsburg will be stepping down from her position immediately to undergo intensive chemotherapy and allow the President to nominate as her replacement First Lady Michelle LaVaughn Robinson Obama ’88.

    • Peggy Sue

That’s a good piece of snark, Katmoon. Read down a bit and you’ll see Obama’s reasoning was based on Michelle’s decsion-making abilities: the fabulous job she did on choosing the family dog.

Now, if she could just transfer that to her wardrobe! :0)

      • Katmoon

Thanks PM, and Peggy Sue, I know my post looks ridiculous but no more than waking up to that noise this morning. What we see as snark today, God help us……

        • oowawa

This is a good point, Katmoon. It’s getting increasingly difficult to separate fantasy from reality. And what the heck is “reality” anyway? Ferd’s a scientist–maybe he’ll know. And so I ask (eyes slightly crossed) Ferd, what is reality?

          • Katmoon

Ferd is still thinking about the NPP; I talked to him awhile ago(at work). Think about what we have had thrown at us over the last year: a great deal of it shocking news, actions done deliberately to influence politics.
-The DNC betrayal of Senator Clinton
-The allowing of racist tactics to gain voter support
-The outright fraud of ACORN in the housing market and registration of voters.
-Senators and Congress people committing tax fraud with no consequences.
-The celebrated savaging of all opponents to anything the one does or considers.

The nobel committee makes no effort to hide the fact that is what they are doing, trying to hold him worthy of being the NPP winner. It is disgusting, and truly out of line for this type of influence to be directly injected into our system.

My question now is how will he act on Afghanistan?

My second question is, who will he seek for replacement for Justice Ginsburg? I imagine this is her last term.

In the interim, it will be pushed that of course because he won the NPP, the health care plan or any other legislation he works should be passed, because the world acknowledges what a great leader he is. You have to wonder whom, between September last year received a nomination notification? If the nomination had to be received by Feb 1, 2009; it sort of looks like he may have only been in office a day or two at most. It also appears that he would not have been nominated if it hadn’t been known he would win the election, because wouldn’t that be a waste of time to give the NPP to a Senator? Hmmmmm.. Past laureates get a chance to nominate Carter?

          • ~~JustMe~~

OMG Katmoon I just dropped by the same piece my hair stood on end. UGH Thanks peggy I see skim reading does not work when your already wound up!

            • Katmoon

I know ~~Just ME~~, its a good exercise in both reading and realizing what we see and hear. Because of the news this morning about the NPP, it was an easy leap to believe this; and also by my swearing when I posted showed I was serious, as regulars know my posting. It is a scary joke, and a reflection of how we are being led around by this administration to the point where the ridiculous becomes our reality. It is mind boggling to think this was all in play before he went into office, or so damned close. SO forgive me, it was a foolish post, know that I did this to make a point, and apologize for scaring anyone. I didn’t realize the Nobel committee were, like Obama, closet Muslims.

  • Fred

Oh no. He has accepted. Which means he thinks he deserves it. If he thinks he has had difficulty with some world leaders he hasn’t seen anything yet. By being awarded this based upon his “potential” there is little incentive for anyone to work with him because it is obvious that he does not have to actually do anything to be seen as succeeding. Dealing with him is a probable waste of time and they know they will never get any credit irregardless of what they do.

  • creeper

OK. The Nobel webpage finally loaded. Here’s their word on voting:

October – Nobel Laureates are chosen. At the beginning of October, the Nobel Committee chooses the Nobel Peace Prize Laureates through a majority vote. The decision is final and without appeal. The names of the Nobel Peace Prize Laureates are then announced.

Very probably this vote WAS taken after the IOC snubbed him. It boggles the mind to think of the Nobel as a consolation prize but it’s hard to escape that conclusion.

  • Docelder

Must have been the “beer summit”. That had to be it.

Yes, Doc. I’m so glad you remembered that incident. That’s when he brought the warring factions together. It all makes sense now.

      All hail, Prince of Peace!

  • Kim

These are the very deserving people that were passed-over in favor of Obama:

Sima Samar, women’s rights activist in Afghanistan: “With dogged persistence and at great personal risk, she kept her schools and clinics open in Afghanistan even during the most repressive days of the Taliban regime, whose laws prohibited the education of girls past the age of eight. When the Taliban fell, Samar returned to Kabul and accepted the post of Minister for Women’s Affairs.”

Ingrid Betancourt: French-Colombian ex-hostage held for six years.

“Dr. Denis Mukwege: Doctor, founder and head of Panzi Hospital in Bukavu, Democratic Republic of Congo. He has dedicated his life to helping Congolese women and girls who are victims of gang rape and brutal sexual violence.”

Handicap International and Cluster Munition Coalition: “These organizations are recognized for their consistently serious efforts to clean up cluster bombs, also known as land mines. Innocent civilians are regularly killed worldwide because the unseen bombs explode when stepped upon.”

“Hu Jia, a human rights activist and an outspoken critic of the Chinese government, who was sentenced last year to a three-and-a-half-year prison term for ‘inciting subversion of state power.’”

“Wei Jingsheng, who spent 17 years in Chinese prisons for urging reforms of China’s communist system. He now lives in the United States.”

    • MG-PUMA

Thank you for this list, and I’m sure each and every one of these noteworthy people deserve the Peace Prize much more than the Total Jerk, but he has one thing they lack: Star Power.

And that’s why he got it and they didn’t.

      MG-PUMA

      • oowawa

You’re right, MG-PUMA. I never once saw any of those people on televion.

    • Peggy Sue

Kim, your list of other nominees, really brings this into perspective and underscores how ludicrous this decision actually was. But I’m sure these folks didn’t have a PR machine working for them around the clock.

They were too busy actually doing something in the world, helping others.

      The whole thing’s a crock!

    • creeper

I didn’t think anything could make this worse. Your list just did, Kim.

It’s gloomy, cold and wet here today…a perfect day for the death of the Nobel’s credibility.

I’ve already run the gamut of emotions, from disbelief to confusion to anger. What’s left is sadness…for our country and the world.

The Nobel committee has trivialized both itself and the prize beyond redemption.

One thing still bothers me, though. Bloggers and even the media seem to believe that the voting took place less than two weeks after Obama was sworn it. That is not true and we need to be careful of claiming it is. Voting took place last week…just after the Olympics fiasco.

      Let’s keep our dates straight.

      • http://firefox Martha Washington Collier

The story I read said he was nominated 10 days after taking office. Soros, I presume.

        • FLDemFem

More likely it was Jimmy Carter who sent in the nomination. Past Laureates have the privilege of nomination. And the only one I can think of who is foolish and deluded enough to nominate Obummer for the Peace Prize would be Jimmy Carter. Soros may have pressured the committee to give the prize to Obummer, but he isn’t one of the people who can nominate people for Nobel Prizes. Carter is.

I don’t know how the Nobel Committee can justify choosing Obama over these people. They’ve all sacrificed and accomplished so much good…something Obama has never done, in my opinion. You’re right…he was nominated the second week he was in office.

    Hey!

Let’s find someone to nominate Larry C. Johnson for the Peace Prize!

Here is all we need: one university prof will do it.

When I first heard the news upon waking this morning (west coast) I thought at first that it was a new SNL skit. Then, when I realized it was for real, I laughed at out and asked, as just about everyone else has: For what?

Finally, I thought about the other nominees who I had just read about yesterday. Women and men who had spent their lives working against repression, challenging dictators, some languishing in prisons for years, all in danger. And this CLOWN is awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for giving speeches.

Well, judging from the last skit SNL did about his “accomplishments” this should give them a wealth of material. I’m sure the little worker bees are buzzing away for tomorrow night. I’ll even watch to see what they come up with…for the opening at least.

  • HARP

He must have won because his uncle freed all the Jews.

  • IndieDogg

The Nobel Committee was only following the example set by the American voter.

Who said achievement had to come before recognition? We obviously didn’t think so. Why should they?

I recall this time-honored saying: “And you shall be rewarded. Then go work hard.”

Wait, that doesn’t sound right. Does it?

    • cookiegramma

you are right, it’s backward. The only reason Obama recieved the award this time around is because the committee knew that he would do something to ruin his chances by the next nomination. They just had to get it out this one time.

      • MG-PUMA

        LOL!

Yes, there certainly appears to be an “urgency of now” driving the committee’s vote.

Fox has been following a Dallas car chase for about the 2 hours! Thank you Fox for giving the No-Bel Piss Prize the importance it really deserves…several notches below a car chase.

PS: The car is now driving on rims and is not giving up. Neither will I in working to get the Faux American out of office.

    • Portia Elizabeth

Nobel Piss Prize! I love it!!!

    the 2 hours…fingers are still incredulous…

  • Count Crash

Do you think they will invite Kenye West to the award ceremony?

There are powerful, sinister forces who control the puppet!

but, but, but…I’m still waiting for my unicorn? Doesn’t world peace arrive at the same time as the unicorns we were promised???? Wait until he actually follows through stupid Norwiegians! I am sorry to drag all Norweigians into it, but that is what happens here in America, we all get blamed for the stupidity of people who don’t represent us. The rest of the world needs to get used to it, too.

  • sangee

Nobel peace prize is a joke anyways!!!

Are you fucking kidding me?! AM I ACTUALLY LIVING IN SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE??!

This news is what I was awakened with at 6 am after a sleepless night worrying about my sister, who lost her $75,000 a year Regional Director job in a Therapeutic Foster Home Program.

I couldn’t sleep all night, worrying about her. She’s single, so no spouse to help cushion the blow. But, hey, she’s like so many millions of others in this nightmarish economy. Taking the blows and doing their best to withstand them and survive–with a little help from family and friends. We’re helping a lot of family these days. We’re blessed that we can do so.

But, this morning, I was tired, and cranky. So, to hear the news that Obama won the NOBEL PEACE PRIZE….for…..nothing, was a bit over the top.

Sigh~there is simply NO END TO THE ABSURDITY of this world. A Nobel Committee that passes over these people for Obama?

    Are you fucking kidding me?

Meet the People Who Were Passed Over for Obama

I think thishas been a little overdramatized…Obama winning the prize still doesn’t top when Yasser Arafat was given the same award…that one had me scratching my head…

  • DaddysDarlin

WTF? I am appalled. To have those who were actually worthy for such an award simply be overlooked in favor of this fraud is beyond me!
I am so damn pissed off I cant even tell you. Is this what we can expect in the next four years? I have been sick to death of this asshole for years now and we are awarding a liar who has done nothing for this world besides taking up good air, what has come of this world?
    Unbelievable, simply unbelievable.
What did the Obama administration promise these people? How much money passed through their hands?
To the good people who should have won the award for lives of accomplishment, I applaud you, even though the committee ignored you!

  • Grace

The whole affair of the Nobel prize sounds like the theater of the absurd, or something for an Orwellian piece of science fiction. But since and while they are at it, how about giving MO a prize for her exemplary life-long fight for women’s rights? and another one for George W. Bush as the best reader of goat stories? LOL

  • Dr. Dr. Dr. Salve

Now that Barack Hussein Obama, The Usurper of Republican Democracy (You can make out of the acronym whatever you desire even though there is only one conclusion.)has received the Nobel Peace Prize, I consider toilet paper more important.
