International Brawl Over Nobel – Open Thread

Bobby Muller, who won the Nobel Prize as co-founder of the International Campaign to Ban Landmines, told The Times: “I don’t have the highest regard for the thinking or process of the Nobel committee. Maybe Norway should give it to Sweden so they can more properly handle the Peace Prize along with all the other Nobel prizes.”

– From “Barack Obama’s peace prize starts a fight,” UK Times

Below, here’s how YOU can win a Nobel, with a key question for all of you:

Also from the same story:

The award is also an example of what Nobel scholars call the growing aspirational trend of Nobel committees over the past three decades, by which awards are given not for what has been achieved but in support of the cause being fought for.

Thorbjørn Jagland, the committee chairman, made clear that this year’s prize fell in that category. “If you look at the history of the Peace Prize, we have on many occasions given it to try to enhance what many personalities were trying to do,” he said. “It could be too late to respond three years from now.”

Okay! I aspire to bring world peace within four years. Will one of you nominate me next year?

And what will YOU aspire to in order to get nominated?

I aspire to buy children’s school supplies for disadvantaged inner city children in children’s schools and build more children’s schools for disadvantaged Native American children on reservations and school these unschooled disadvantaged children in school.

  • imustprotest

I aspire to help women who are suppressed and oppressed in countries that haven’t flipped the pages of the calendar since the dark ages. Opps, my bad, helping women? Probably won’t win me any awards…..maybe I should just be content that I am free to wear a hajib.

      Wish I’d thought of that!

It’s too bad they don’t give it to people who actually bring peace, like Hillary Clinton. This week, while Obummer was preening in the spotlight of the Nobel committee, she brokered, and got signed, a peace treaty between Turkey and Armenia. That’s right.. Turkey and Armenia.

She returned to the hotel where she spoke by phone from the sedan in the parking lot, three times with the Armenians and four times with the Turks. At one point in the intervention, a Swiss police car, lights and siren blazing, brought a Turkish diplomat to the hotel from the university with a new draft of his country’s statement.
After nearly two hours, Clinton and Armenian Foreign Minister Edward Nalbandian met in person at the hotel and drove back to the university where negotiations continued. It was not clear if there would be a resolution.
In the end, the Turks and Armenians signed an accord establishing diplomatic ties in hope of reopening their border and ending a century of acrimony over their bloody past. Their parliaments are expected to ratify it, but nationalists on both sides are seeking to derail implementation of the agreement.

Turkey and Armenia signed an accord Saturday to establish diplomatic relations after a century of enmity, as U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton helped the two sides clear a last-minute snag.
“It was pulled back from the brink,” said a senior U.S. official

There was a snag about wording, and every one stomped off to their respective corners, aka embassies, while Hillary sat in a car and talked to all of them, one after the other, and got the problem worked out.

Obummer hasn’t done that much work in the nine months he has been in office. And he gets the Peace Prize for speeches. What does Hillary get for actually DOING something to bring peace? Nada. The back of the hand from the media and this administration. Fortunately, the rest of the world seems to think as much of her as we do.. by we I mean her supporters on this blog..and other PUMAs too.

Thanks for the post. I heard snippets during the day but hadn’t heard the last. Hillary is like all truly great leaders; they do the work and don’t care who gets the credit so long as the results are there.

      • ~~JustMe~~

Exactly Hillary is a worker : Obama is a taker.

        • http://firefox Martha Washington Collier

And, while Hillary was achieving this historical win, the 0zer0′s were meeting with the Girl Scouts.
Well, as I posted on another blog, each to their own abilities.

          What a sad farce.

        • Lyn

Well remember the comment about we should pick the work horse and not the show horse?

    • Diana L. C.

And all the little obots will claim this for Obambi because obviously she couldn’t have done it without him.

What absolute idiots the Prize committee are, as bad as the deranged obots who come her.

    • Portia Elizabeth

The saddest part of Hillary’s hard work is that, if she ever gets the Nobel Peace Prize, it’ll hold all the glamour and cachet of getting a whistle in a box of Cracker Jacks.

    • Nellie

Thank you for informing us about this Fl Dem. It needs to be broadly seen.

Have you thought of doing an article on it? It pretty well writes itself, and even include an embedded video.

I am sure Larry would be thrilled to post it.

    • tek

FLDem: Right you are! Hillary should have had this prize, but of course that would have started a perfect storm in the administration; the woman he stole the WH from getting a Nobel Peace Prize.

  • lorac

SNL opened with the Obama-actor talking about winning the Peace Prize. Then he immediately went into having won a $70 million powerball lottery and spent all the time on that. SNL has no guts.

    • http://firefox Martha Washington Collier

Yep, it fell flat. I think anyone posting here could have come up with one that had some bite in it.

  • http://firefox Martha Washington Collier

Well, they are doing a bit of a follow-up…so far nothing spectacular.

ZURICH — U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton basked in the glow of praise from her Nobel laureate boss on Saturday after spearheading successful efforts to salvage historic accords between longtime bitter foes Turkey and Armenia.

President Barack Obama, who a day earlier was the surprise winner of the Nobel Peace Prize, telephoned Clinton in Switzerland to congratulate her on overcoming a last-minute hitch that threatened to scuttle the Turkish-Armenian deals, a senior State Department official said.

One who takes actions, and has accomplishments, the other one just takes.

For crying out loud, with a stroke of the pen obama could end DADT and have an accomplishment…but nope. keeps dragging it out.

I aspire to keep writing about what a fraud Obama is until people wake up and see the light.

    • Nellie

      Sara,

You expose the Ofraud with such aplomb and humor. I am constantly impressed with the way in which you find news tidbits the American NON MEDIA does not publish.

You go girl! I love your posts.

      • http://sarainitalyblog.blogspot.com/ American Girl in Italy

        thank you nellie! :OD

    • tek

      Sarah: i commend you aspiration!

  • elizabethrc

I aspire to be given millions and millions of dollars. I think I deserve the Nobel because really, truly, I shall be an ever so much nicer person when that happens and the world will be so much better for it.

    • Lyn

I was a Cub Scout Den leader for YEARS, with out one fight breaking out. Did you ever try to keep peace with a group of Boysfrom first grade thru 5th? AND keep them busy and heck even doing community service projects? How do I get one of these, I could use a million bucks, heck I would even share with the person who Nominates me, which is probably who Obama is “donating” his prize winnings too. You know like they “rescued a dog” but ended up getting a purebread exactly the breed they wanted?
Thinking further, I was a grade school lunch aid and Room Mom too and kept peace on the play ground

  • Portia Elizabeth

I aspire to developing an effective antidote to the BO kool-aid before the 2010 elections. I will. of course, donate my NP winnings to a worthy charity like help for the perpetually brainwashed.

    • Nellie

      GOOD aspiration!

I laughed out loud, while hoping you really do find an antidote. I for one would help you get it into the water systems of our country.

    • http://sarainitalyblog.blogspot.com/ American Girl in Italy

      love it!

  • Sassy

I aspire to say “I” at least 500 times per day!
Worked for BO, great accolades, and a nice chunk of change!

    • Ferd Berfle

I aspire to say “I” at least 500 times per day!

      LMAO

Interspersed, of course, with ers, ahs, ums, uhs, and the word “me”.

  • Typewriterstreaming

I aspire to say “I told you so” to every Obamabot follower friend of mine as awaken to the reality that Obinokinobee is a fraud.

  • Texas Playwright

I aspire to eliminate all caucuses from every state in the USA, return to hand counted paper ballots, legislate photo ID’s as proof of citizenship in all states, eliminate the corrupt Dem. delegate system and have popular one person/one vote primaries, with winner take all as the GOP does, eliminate ACORN and its new names for the same corruption, and deny every single illegal alien the right to vote, housing, medical care and Social Security until they pay taxes annually and keep their money in the USA. If the USA does this, it will set an example for free and fair elections everywhere, thus engendering world peace.

As this will not happen in my lifetime, I aspire to get my laundry done before I go to bed tonight.

  • ImaLlindatoo

Oh and who did the Nobel Committee pass up to give the Empty One the PP as a political move squashing any integrity they could have had.

Meet the People Who Were Passed Over for Obama

Sima Samar, women’s rights activist in Afghanistan: “With dogged persistence and at great personal risk, she kept her schools and clinics open in Afghanistan even during the most repressive days of the Taliban regime, whose laws prohibited the education of girls past the age of eight. When the Taliban fell, Samar returned to Kabul and accepted the post of Minister for Women’s Affairs.”

Ingrid Betancourt: French-Colombian ex-hostage held for six years.

    “Dr. Denis Mukwege: Doctor
, founder and head of Panzi Hospital in Bukavu, Democratic Republic of Congo. He has dedicated his life to helping Congolese women and girls who are victims of gang rape and brutal sexual violence.”

Handicap International and Cluster Munition Coalition: “These organizations are recognized for their consistently serious efforts to clean up cluster bombs, also known as land mines. Innocent civilians are regularly killed worldwide because the unseen bombs explode when stepped upon.”

“Hu Jia, a human rights activist and an outspoken critic of the Chinese government, who was sentenced last year to a three-and-a-half-year prison term for ‘inciting subversion of state power.’”

“Wei Jingsheng, who spent 17 years in Chinese prisons for urging reforms of China’s communist system. He now lives in the United States.”

  • http://www.vacationrentalsad.com/ Lisa

I think the Nobel Prize is an honor for the President, he was very gracious about accepting it.

    • Ferd Berfle

Stop selling your trashy rentals here and posting your 16-year old platitudes, Lisa. You’re bad at the former and absolutely wretched at the latter.

  • ~~JustMe~~

    I aspire to have

    Hope
    &
    Change

deleted from the dictionary as there just empty words that mean nothing at all!

    • Ferd Berfle

      LMAO.

You know, of course, that Fearful Leader will just create brand-spanking new words with the same meaning and his minions will have those inserted in the dictionary. I don’t think an intervention would work at this point.
