“Under No Circumstances …”

“Under no circumstances will I be a candidate for vice president.”

     - Senator Jim Webb, D-Virginia, to Barack Obama’s face last week

“If drafted, I will not run; nominated, I will not accept; and if elected, I will not serve.  So, I don’t know how more crystal clear I can be.”

     - Governor Ted Strickland, D-Ohio, on NPR

Strickland, Rendell and Webb have all rejected being Obama’s number two. He’s lost his best possible choices after signaling that he rejects his best choice–Hillary. Maybe he doesn’t want or need a vice presidential running mate, just a backup singer for his rock star concert at Invesco Field.

Of Note: Ed Rendell has been similarly clear, although he’s willing to accept a cabinet appointment after he’s completed his term as governor of Pennsylvania.

It’s worth reading what the Los Angeles Times reports why Jim Webb would be such a strong choice:

A Virginia Democrat elected in 2006, Webb was considered attractive as a potential vice presidential nominee because his resume is strong where Obama’s is weak: on national security issues. Webb served as secretary of the Navy under President Reagan and is a decorated former Marine. He also carries the added appeal of coming from a Southern state that Obama hopes to contest.

Jim Webb is an honorable person and has promised to campaign if Obama is the nominee.

Oh well.

There’s always Bill Richardson, who appears to be willing to do most anything to get himself on the ticket.

  • Tricia

He has Michelle she is like Dick Chenney (nasty)

  • no waffles aka drkate

This is funny. No one wants to run with Obambi! Guess Caroline will have to pull a Cheney–recommend herself.

Richardson is begging for it, but won’t get it. he’s going to have to choose a republican (my guess hagel) or a western governor.

I have a feeling Obama is a naturalized citizen of the US, not native born. he will change the law if he is elected to allow this. Therefore, why not Ahnold???

  • JS Ruby

I agree with the previous comment. He has MEE-shell why does he need anyone else. She is the VP of his choice.

  • Susan

Yes. This is an historic election, remember? He can just nominate Michelle. Or better yet, maybe he can be President and Vice President! He is the messiah after all!

Doesn’t he want to ask Governor Blagojevich????

  • Cooney

Sounds like a pretty clear message from the top Dems if you ask me. Could it be they know he is going to lose. SuperD’s should sit up and take notice of the best and the brightest of the Democratic Party’s reluctance to closely align themselves with King Obama. How much more evidence do they need, he is not supported by democratic winners.

  • http://deleted imustprotest

A Virginia Democrat elected in 2006, Webb was considered attractive as a potential vice presidential nominee because his resume is strong where Obama’s is weak:

Where Obama’s is weak??? Where ISN’T his resume weak?

  • Mr. X

There were polls that came out a while back from SUSA between Obama and McCain with different running mates. It was strange in that the only VP choice that actually gave Obama a bump was Edwards. Everyone else was a liability (Hillary was not an option in the poll). It will be Edwards or Hillary. Actually, it’ll be Edwards because no way can Obama humble himself and realise that he needs Hillary.

And that’s the real issue here. He needs her. But she doesn’t need him to win in November.

  • btintaos

Please, oh, please, oh, please can we get our October surprise early? Everyone else knows what it is.

  • Wexler-no-more

He can get Rene Marie to sing the “Black National Anthem”. I guess The Amercan National Anthem is no longer any use to him, just ask Michelle Obama.

  • Chad3337

You’re all looking at this from the wrong perspective. Obama has been quietly telling the “top dems” to take themselves out of contention. He doesn’t want to share the stage or the national attention, and is counting on a blow-out election victory. He’s having those who would conventionally be the best candidates and bring the most electoral votes to the ticket take themselves out of contention (preserving their self-respect) to make room for a light weight friend like Sebelius (or maybe Richardson).

  • Bridgette

lmao! This is great! No one vvants be his VP. Besides Richardson…but that vvould definitely be a losing ticket!

  • Bridgette

    Keep telling yourself that!

  • Sassy

Senator Webb is my hero of the day! If I moved 20 miles north, I could and would vote for him! Hopefully, I will be able to say that about other Dems in the future. Right now, I feel like a number of respected “friends” have betrayed me. I’ll recover…and McCain is starting to appeal to me!

  • candymarl

Could be those top Dems that refuse to be the VP are asking themselves: “If they could do this to Hillary why wouldn’t they do the same to me”?

  • Bye bye Obambi

    Excellent point!!!

  • Untilthelastdogdies

I was wondering when Jim Webb would make his intentions clear. I believe he is positioning himself for 2012 as the top banana.

I also believe, had it been offered, that he would have accepted the VP position had Hillary been the nominee.

His competition would have been tough…Strickland, Rendell, et. al,

Hell, my #1 favorite for VP was Mayor Michael Nutter (if he doesn’t get Rendell’s job as Pennsylvania’s next Governor I will once again be disgusted with the Democratic Party).

  • vonay

I think Obama should choose Rev. Wright as VP. What a man! Wooo hooooo God Dam_America!
We’ll have the chickens coming home to roost and everything!
Rev. Wright should also preach at the Dem. convention, and remind us how American gave the blacks the aid virus.
Maybe Ayers will be there too and stomp on some American flags.
The Black Panthers could sing a anti american song
and Michelle and Farakhan’s wife can do back up.

  • http://liberalrapture.com scott in jupiter

He doesn’t like our National Anthem. “It has scary tones in it like bombs bursting in air and such”. He can’t salute that song, it sends the wrong message to the outside world he loves.

    Well F-barky

  • Bella

LMAO @ Edwards. Always the bridesmaid never the bride. Seriously, Edwards is ok, but I don’t see him as VP running mate. He is probably hoping for the AG spot, I’m sure it was promised.

He won’t pick a woman either, because it will piss off a large number of Hill voters.

I think it’s going to be a republican.

  • http://elect2009.wordpress.com/ Cindie

These men that have denied Obama KNOW what they are doing. I still say that Wesley Clark did what he did so Obama would denounce him…that’s what he wanted Obama to do so he wouldn’t “have” to do anything else for him. HA!

  • vonay

HaHa I always knew Wes Clark was smart.

  • Tattie

I’M GLAD SENATOR WEBB KEPT HIS INTEGRITY IN TACT.

  • http://deleted imustprotest

I think he’ll pick Sam Nunn.

  • Concerned Independent

Didn’t Edwards also say no to VP a few months ago?

  • etrog

    Larry Sinclair for VP.
Brings a sense of honesty, can handle tough questions from the press, smokes crack, has a legit birth certificate.

  • I Will Remember in November

If obama wants a vp that will not overshadow him, he will have to pick any woman EXCEPT hillary or john edwards sorry but john edwards has a very feminine presence.

  • Concerned Independent

He needs someone even scarier than himself as VP. Sort of an insurance policy like Cheney is for Bush. That pretty much only leaves Michelle Obama.

  • ccwarrior

goodmorning Puma family… The more time that passes, the more I know deep in my heart that our cause is a fight worth fighting for. A MOVEMENT THAT must BE WAGED. A mission much larger than we are as individuals. My anger jumps off the rictor scale very often, and I must constantly remind myself to channel that energy into the work we must do. The chalenges we must conquer. And the bridges we must build to take back not only the process, but our country from those who want to defy the constitution and silence our voices. For me, this is not just a protest of what happened to Hillary, but possibly one of the most historical movements all of us will make in the history of this great nation. The nation that belongs to us,
(the people). When we feel disillusioned , frustrated, and knocked down, we must remember what it is that we are doing to bring about change and justice for ALL the people who have been pushed aside. Strength in numbers is a powerful thing. And remember. We will not go away silently, or just fall in line. We are many, we are strong, and we are UNITED.

  • K. Wynne

Why does everyone “assume” Hillary would accept the offer to be his VP? The word was that she told him “Thanks, but no thanks”, when she met him that first time after she suspended her campaign at Diane Feinstein’s home. Also, she has indicated that wants to return to the Senate and be the best Senator that she can be. Hardly sounds like she gives a shit about being VP.

Don’t you just love how the MSM always takes the position that Hillary is waiting anxiously by the phone for BO to call and give her the nod? I think that’s just more bullshit to give the illusion that Hillary needs BO. Nothing could be further from the truth and he, his handlers, and the MSM know it.

Despite all of the outrage expressed over the media boyz’ sexist/misogynistic behavior, they still can’t help themselves can they?

  • Faustina

According to the news reports, Obama has already appointed his VP’s chief of staff, Patti Solis-Doyle. What politician in his/her right mind would accept Obama’s VP offer without being able to name his/her own chief of staff?

Where are all the objective journalists? They didn’t give us the story when it broke. We still don’t really know anything about this bizarre appointment.

  • roseeriter

Many of us recognize the obambic plague when we see it and know to stay away from the carrier..

Susan, add Mark Warner from VA too, though he has not made any public statement about it — well, he accepted the senate nomination (and is sure win) which in itself is a statement. Obama in his VA JJ dinner had alluded to how Warner would be a prize on anyone’s ticket.

  • Bella

Not sure, I haven’t heard that, but I might’ve missed it.

Barack Obama Admits the Surge Strategy in Iraq is Working

“If current trends continue and we were in a position where we continue to see reductions in violence and stabilization and continue to see some improvements on the part of the Iraqi Army and the Iraqi police, then my hope could be that we could draw down in a deliberate fashion in consultation with the Iraqi government at a pace that is determined in consultation with General Petraeus and the other commanders on the ground.”

  • stodghie

it worked too. clark is the man!

  • StrawberrybitesBarky

I agree, wholeheartedly, and it also garnered sympathy for McCain. Men like Clark do not go off at the mouth like that. It was well planned. barky just fell for it, what a MaRoon.

  • cleffnote

I’ve heard rumors that there is not going to be a first vote with Hillary’s name on the ballot. Does that mean that not only are not all the votes from Florida and Michigan going to be counted, but the other 18 million aren’t going to be counted either?

  • stodghie

obama has sure defined himself before the general. it is as if the mccain campaign emailed him a list of what to do for them and that’s what he did.

  • StrawberrybitesBarky

    No kidding.

  • PGraber

You are exactly right. They act like she is just “waiting to be asked”. He needs her and she doesn’t need him AT ALL for anything. I just absolutely love it.

  • PAT

Looks like if he askes Hillary ever to be the VP it will be when all else fails.I hope she turns it down this would be his wy of making her look insignificant like he does everyone else.Besides Hillary should be the legitimate Nominee.

  • PuppyDogMom

Just curious…why would Edwards want to put himself on a losing ticket again?

  • rwc

Webb was the last chance to give Obama the broad appeal he needs.

Then again Webb makes Obama look stupid since he doesn’t need a teleprompter when speaking to the press.

  • Linda

Auh yes, but even I am not that greedy with the desire of him leaving our state behind. But, sadly, I need to inform you, that is NOT the case for most folks here. They were willing to support him for president, just so he would leave our state. Thanks to him, he brought a level of corruption here that has even shocked folks who have lived here forever. The guy just wants to be back in Washington AND ALWAYS does what ever will help his meal ticket.

It seems the Obama campaign is already smearing Webb for his decision. There is a story on Taegan Goddard’s Political Wire that Webb backed out because he didn’t want to undergo a background check. Gee, I wonder who’s spreading that muck?

  • d2d

There is one Governor who would accept, or at least I bet he’d accept – Governor Tim Kaine, Virginia.

The good Governor has campaigned hard for BO. He drank the kool aid way back when as did many on his staff.

I digress. Kaine did some Missionary work in, I think it was, Africa, after attending Harvard where he studied law. He’s a Catholic, married a wonderful woman, Ann Holton, whose father is the former Governor Linwood Holton – who is known for his stand against the white mobs in Virginia who protested the Brown v Board of Education decision – he served as Mayor of Richmond in the 90s and he was raised in the mid-west, Detroit maybe?

    I’ve heard he’s a possibility.

  • believe

So what are you actually doing as a movement? Posting on-line?

  • Sam

He might go with Evan Bayh. I saw a comment at another site about how the Obama campaign is opening 25-30 offices in Indiana. Indiana is a red state that went for Bush huge, even as Bayh won reelection handily the same year. I can’t imagine any circumstances under which Obama could win Indiana EXCEPT if Bayh was on the ticket. It may be that they have picked him and are starting to open offices in preparation for that. How else could they make a serious play for Indiana? Plus, Bayh supported Hillary so they can keep pretending that they have a unity pony. Also, Bayh was a governor for two terms with a balanced budget before becoming a Senator, so he is actually qualified (but then again, compared to Obama, who isn’t?). And, Bayh won’t steal Obama’s thunder…also, Bayh wanted a shot at Prez this year but dropped out because he didn’t have enough star power, so this would give him national exposure to run in 2012 or 2016. But if Obama loses, I don’t see how anyone has a chance against Hillary in 2012…

I think Barry’s ego is too fragile to chose a VP that backed Hillary in the primary, so I don’t think he would pick Evan Bayh. I think it’ll be Richardson or that Kansas woman whose name I can’t spell (Barry seems to have positive mother transference issues with her. heh!). He has to pick someone he is comfortable with, and that means someone whom he feels superior to.

Such an interesting study in narcissism, is our Barry.

Either way, he’ll lose, so whatever. All I care about is that Hillary Clinton is NOT on the ticket.

  • BoboBolinsky

But I did check his bio, and he needs a bit more time in elected office. The governorship of Pennsylvania would be great — and I am SURE he would have NO problems with those bitter white people. Because they’ll quickly see how diligent, able, and informed he is. Once he’s governor of Pennsylvania, his opportunities are unlimited. I’d support him in a heartbeat.

The reason Clinton supporters will not vote for Obama is because they are embarrassed of him, his life, his unfair tactics and his beliefs. And they still don’t know all about him.

    1. They don’t want a candidate that has been in a twenty year relationship with Reverend Wright and the Trinity United Church of Christ.

    2. They don’t’ want a candidate that has a twenty year relationship with Father Pflaeger as his compass in life

    3. They don’t want a candidate that went to a church that supports Louis Farrakhan, an anti Semitic racist.

    4. They don’t want to defend Black Liberation theology.

    5. They don’t want a candidate that lies about his relationship with Tony Rezko, the Syrian Criminal that sold his property to Obama and supported his campaign.

    6. They don’t want a candidate that could work with a domestic terrorist, William Ayers.

    7. They don’t want a candidate that Hamas supports.

    8. They don’t want a candidate that Farrakhan and the Nation of Islam support

    9. They don’t want a candidate that has a wife that has just now realized she was proud of our country.

    10. They don’t want a candidate that denies Florida and Michigan their voices

    11. They don’t want a candidate that mentions 57 states in his speeches. 50 states in the USA and 57 states in the Nation of Islam (IOC website)

    12. They don’t want a candidate that fights unfair and steals Michigan delegate votes from his opponent.

    13. They don’t want a candidate that feels sorry to leave a church that is anti American and that preaches hatred and racial views that are cruel and nasty.

    14. They don’t want a candidate that is inexperienced.

    15. They don’t want a candidate that considers it a loss to not to be able to attend his anti American, racist Church.

    16. They don’t want a candidate that has a “non practicing” Muslim father, but avoids the entire discussion of his father.

    17. They don’t’ want a candidate that won’t debate

    18. They don’t’ want a candidate that misleads the youth with an ‘Obama girl and her behind in their face”

    19. They don’t want a candidate that says he’s an African American and missed the MLK Remembrance Day and the Louisiana Black Caucus meeting

    20. They don’t want a candidate that has done nothing for humanity except talk about it.

    21. They don’t’ want a candidate that has poor judgment.

    22. They don’t’ want a candidate named; Barack Hussein Obama

    23. He scares them to death.

    25. He is unelectable.

too bad Obama didn’t follow his own advice – when he said he wouldn’t feel comfortable running not having served one day in the U.S. Senate – though then after 143 days, he flip flopped and suddenly believed he could be Pres.

I have heard Richardson say he would endorse Hillary, then he flips on her and goes to Obama. He is nothing more than an opportinist…I wrote to him and told him what I thought of his tactics, sent it to the Governor’s mansion….big wow! He didn’t bother responding. It’s a good thing his term is up!

You are absolutely right. This election is not about Obama. It is about George Bush. You could run George Clooney as the Republican nominee against Dirt this year and Dirt would win. Clooney (R) couldn’t even get laid in this election year.

  • Patti

Jeebs, maybe this lady can rent the Taj Obama in Chicago and run for the Chicago US Senator throne. Yes, she’s on the short list. Better yet…so you can strike her…all bases covered.

How about David Axelrod for Veep?

He actually lived here on he Mailand in the 60s. You can tell by the length of his moustache. Just the mere thought of this person scares the shit right out of me. I am not kidding.

(It’s time for another Audacity Bio, anyway).

yes, the Obama campaign has “bribed” the networks to do their bidding through large advertising buys, no doubt.

  • catherine

The only anguish she has brought to the nation is by not getting the due respect she deserves from the media and DNC. Obamabots like to blame Hillary for their candidate’s troubles- to call her names, and to make her out to be a monster but the truth is Obama is a fraud and incompetent to lead this country during these difficult times. Go drink some more kool-aid. Just wait- pretty soon your mouth will be filled with cavities.

  • Anee

MO is his only choice, she will slap him around again if she isn’t (previously posted CNN video clip of MO slapping BO).

Its like No matter what kind of crap obama pulls the media gives him a pass.

They are so invested in writing about the Historic first black man to become president they don’t give a crap about anything else.

    Its pathetic.

  • Anee

We’ve already seen MO slap BO around. See the cnn video, surprised no one on the blogs has picked this up.

  • Patti

    All sarcasm aside.

Choosing a VP these days reaaly means something. We should really be thinking who is the best strategically. We need to be thinking who would be best on Day 167 to actually sit in the Oval Office.

It’s not because of the violence – the kind we children of 60′s witnessed. It’s because the POTUS will invariably be caught and tried at something –out of his control.

Sit this one out Hillary. Bill Resist! Your silence speaks volumes nd we hear you loud and clear. We’ve got your back.(s)

Who is the wonderful person governing Louisiana right now? While reading all the posts, I laughed so hard I almost got a side ache. There is a lot of very cleaver bloggers posting their dissent over Obama.

I suggest that all the bums in Congress get voted out. They are selling our Country to the nearest bidder. The Congress won’t let us drill for oil saying it will take 10 years. I say BULL. Go read Michael Reagan’s syndicated column titled, ” Rage against the Dems.” He tells it like it is. I have been saying the same thing to my husband for months.

Anyway, excuse me for my little rant. Let me get back on track by saying that Obama will be the puppet of Democratic machine to get their pet projects through Congress while us
    Americans get the royal shaft.

I’m glad that Obama is getting what is coming to him for treating Hillary Clinton as poorly as he did. Now if only everyone will see the light about Obama. He is a LIAR, a THUG, and a SCAMMER.

Your last line in this article made me laugh.

    Oh well.

There’s always Bill Richardson, who appears to be willing to do most anything to get himself on the ticket.

From what I have read in different places, the people of New Mexico would be relieved to see the back of Richardson. Sorry, I cannot find a specific article right now.

  • cathnealon

I don’t know who the Kansan, kenyan, Indonesian, Hawaiian Muslim, Catholic, Christian is going to pick as VP but it’ll probably be Kaine who has angered alot of people in Virginia with his own flip flopping. He’s chomping at the bit to be the VP nominee and his Christian missionary background would be just the ticket for BO. Webb and the others aren’t stupid, they don’t want anything to do with what the Repubs are going to do to BO after the nomination.

  • DancingOpossum

Looks like McCain might pick Charlie Crist for his VP — I really hope so — that would be a great ticket. Crist is very popular in his home state of FL and is a well-liked moderate Repug. Rumor has it the idea was squelched because of rumors that Crist might be gay, but he just announced his engagement…hmmmmmm….

Nobody wants to be on the sinking Obama ship, that’s for sure. I hope and pray he picks McCaskill, because (1) it will guarantee a huge loss; and (2) aside from Donna Brazile there is noone whose tears I will relish more the morning after GE day.

Exactly. What were his classes? Just because the university says he taught there, and you seem to have quotes from his students, that’s not proof. What were his classes? • ddh312

I too recollected Edwards declining the VP possibility earlier. When I read today’s “news” that he now might accept VP spot, I thought he had changed his tune. Some might call it flip-flopping. So he’ll fit right in with O-Boy :-)

Thanks for finding the April article on this.

  • ddh312

Very scary and very creepy. Axelrod and O-Boy definitely deserve each other.

  • ddh312

The answer is no self-respecting potential VP candidate (man or woman) would accept that spot when Obama’s camp already pre-selected/appointed their chief of staff for them. I’ve never even heard of such a thing BEFORE a VP is asked and has accepted, nor do I think there was a good, sound reason for them to have done this at all. Perhaps that’s also why certain top Dems have come out and stated ever so clearly that they’re NOT interested in the VP spot on THIS ticket.

  • ddh312

As we already know good and well, she is FAR too good to be his VP. There are quite a few top Dems who would so easily overshadow him as VP (unintentionally and without even trying), namely because they are much more experienced and qualified for the top spot on the ticket that he already presumably occupies.

And although I almost wish that HRC would come out and publicly state her complete disinterest in the VP spot now (prior to O-Boy’s camp choosing said candidate), I also know that the Hillary bashers would be out instantaneously in full force saying what a horrible person she is for doing that and blah-blah-blah (you know the rest). Like she’s not “supporting” him fully. Even though it’s perfectly okay for others — like Webb, Strickland, Rendell, et al. — to come out now and decline any potential offer (and hence remove themselves from the conversation and the “list”). She would be treated VERY differently, of course (oh what a surprise).

  • ddh312

Please elaborate on “all the anguish she has brought to this nation.” And be very specific and give actual details.

Perhaps (I’m just guessing here) it’s possible that the 18 million who voted for HER in the primaries — you know, the OTHER half of the nearly 36 million who voted — may be partially or even totally unaware of these horrible things. The anguish and such.

PLEASE do educate us — fill us in. Thanks.
