The Audacity of Barack and the Duty of Super Delegates

Let’s agree with Barack Obama on one thing–WORDS MATTER. Unfortunately, he does not believe in his own words. He cannot be trusted. He faced his version of “going to war” in Iraq and failed the test. Rather than stand tall on principle, Barack the coward, Barack the triangulator, Barack the panderer, said yes to immunity for telephone companies who cooperated with George Bush and shredded the Constitution.

Barack no longer has the moral authority to say that Hillary Clinton lacked the judgment to be President because she voted to authorize George Bush to use military force in Iraq. Because he has now faced his moment of decision. While the Republicans had lined up enough votes to force the FISA immunity bill thru, Barack still had a chance to stand on principle. He said this when he was trying to convince Americans that he had the courage to be a new kind of President:

Ever since 9/11, this Administration has put forward a false choice between the liberties we cherish and the security we demand.

The FISA court works. The separation of powers works. We can trace, track down and take out terrorists while ensuring that our actions are subject to vigorous oversight, and do not undermine the very laws and freedom that we are fighting to defend.

No one should get a free pass to violate the basic civil liberties of the American people — not the President of the United States, and not the telecommunications companies that fell in line with his warrantless surveillance program. We have to make clear the lines that cannot be crossed.

And now? Barack, with an eye on November decided he would not stand to protect the Constitution. He ran with the crowd, afraid to confront those who would question his patriotism. Afraid to fight to defend the right of every American against illegal searches.

But it is worse than you think. He is not a smart man. At least Hillary learned the lesson that you cannot trust George Bush and his promises. She got burned when she voted to give Bush authority to go to war if negotiations failed. She just did not think Bush would ignore negotiations. Well, to paraphrase George Bush, fool her once and you can’t fool her again. Hillary learned you cannot trust George. She learned her lesson and voted no. She voted to protect the Constitution. Included in her statement today was this dramatic news:

What is more, even as we considered this legislation, the administration refused to allow the overwhelming majority of Senators to examine the warrantless wiretapping program. This made it exceedingly difficult for those Senators who are not on the Intelligence and Judiciary Committees to assess the need for the operational details of the legislation, and whether greater protections are necessary. The same can be said for an assessment of the telecom immunity provisions. On an issue of such tremendous importance to our citizens – and in particular to New Yorkers – all Senators should have been entitled to receive briefings that would have enabled them to make an informed decision about the merits of this legislation. I cannot support this legislation when we know neither the nature of the surveillance activities authorized nor the role played by telecommunications companies granted immunity.

Congress must vigorously check and balance the president even in the face of dangerous enemies and at a time of war. That is what sets us apart. And that is what is vital to ensuring that any tool designed to protect us is used – and used within the law – for that purpose and that purpose alone. I believe my responsibility requires that I vote against this compromise, and I will continue to pursue reforms that will improve our ability to collect intelligence in our efforts to combat terror and to oversee that authority in Congress.

No more pigs in a poke for her. She would not say yes to something she had not read. But Barack? No problem. He did just that. Barack, if he had a visionary bone in his body, could have used the bully pulpit that is his because of his presumptive status as the nominee to teach America about the importance of protecting the privacy of Americans from illegal searches. He could have talked about having courage in the face of those who employ fear tactics as an excuse to violate our Constitutional rights. There is a lot he could have done, but by the end of the day, he went along with the crowd.

Until today we could only argue hypotheticals about what Barack Obama would have done if he had been in the Senate in October 2002, but no longer. He had a clear choice to back the Constitution or side with George Bush. He chose Bush. Today, Barack Obama demonstrated that he is an arrogant, damn fool. Despite his campaign promises to stand tall, he shrunk from the challenge. He promised Americans a man of principle, a man of character, and man of courage. Today? He delivered an old style Chicago pol keen on positioning himself with the majority, regardless of the morality or ethics of the act. Today he had, at a minimum, the opportunity to make a symbolic stand on the question of the importance of the Fourth Amendment. But he said no to the Constitution and “yes” to George Bush.

Super Delegates. Are you there? Are you seeing what we see? Are you hearing what we hear? Today is a clarion call to every Super Delegate–he has not earned your vote and he does not deserve it.

It is that simple. Without Super Delegates, Barack is toast. I don’t want to hear any of his lame bullshit about what he would do as President. Barack had his chance today to show whether or not he had the spine and character to handle the heat from the oven that is the Oval Office. But instead of standing up, he sat down. He is not not worthy of a single vote. He is an appeaser. Democrats beware. Barack Obama is a coward.

Really anyone expect Obama to vote differently, when a major Obama bundler and Campaign Finance Chair is a major owner in several Telecom companies?

Difference between lobbyiests and bundlers, is bundlers own you directly and how can you say no to them?

From Iraq and General Dynamics to FISA, Obama has always voter the way best suited for the Crown Family!

And those who wonder over obama with Blackwater, take a look at who sits on the Chicago Olympic Commitee and then decide why Obama is supporting Blackwater…….and the answer is……DUHHHHHHHH!!!

    • pm317

Duhh, yes, Larry knows that and all of us supporting Hillary know that. But how many of his leftie supporters know they got hoodwinked? And knowing that is who he was supported by, he threw them right under the megabus today. If this is not a wake up call for them, I don’t know what is?

    • sjl106

There are other examples of his cowardess Larry, Exelon ring a bell, his constinuency wanted the nuc. company to be held accountable for their waste leakages, obama wrote a bill and when Exelon (who by the way donated around $260k over a few years) started crying about it and the repubs started ganging up on him, he rewrote the bill that left it up to them whether or not they would report any spills. And of course he lied to Iowan’s about this. Iran resolution, he just so happened to skip out on the vote declaring the IRG terrorists so he wouldn’t have to take a stand. obama is a FRAUD and he doen’t give a shit about anything but becoming POTUS, I guess people should have listened when Hillary’s camp listed in chronocological order when obama first wanted to become President, beginning in kindergarten (a joke no doubt by Penn) but his first essay was written about it.

But, Larry & Susan & JUSTSAYNODEAL,

WHAT ARE WE GOING TO DO NOW?

  • Seattle Moss

    Larry.
I never could have imagined when this year started what the Democrat party would reveal to us.
Hillary’s campaign showed us the true underpinnings of a party more closely aligned with totalitarian dictatorships than with the United States.
I have ceased to be a Democrat because the democrat party ceased to be democratic.
I can’t vote for a party that resembles enemies that we were forced to fight in the last century.
I can only take solace in the fact that there is a moderate like McCain that the Clinton wing can rally behind

      Seattle Moss-
You have several options open to you this November.

We need to try and open up the campaign to third party candidates too. I was HORRIFIED to see what my party did to Sen Clinton. She has been treated like trash. How disrespectful our own party and Sen Obama and the msm has been to this honorable public servant.

I knew there was no way I could vote for Sen McCain because of what his republican predecessors (beginning with Reagan) have done to our country. I like McCain’s strength of character however I strongly differ from him on many issues-important constitutional issues.

We do have other choices-provided we can help get these guys’ names on the ballots . Some of you may not want to vote for them in November if Sen Clinton chooses to jump back in the race as Presidential candidate…that’s okay

      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ISYNRkoOxRc

but PLEASE…we need a third party system in our country. We need to allow other groups to debate so that we can hear what they have to say and decide.

Help get these guys on the state ballots.

Help them get 10% support so that they can be allowed to join a google-sponsored presidential debate tentatively scheduled for Sept 18 2008 .

Read about it on Nader/Gonzalez website:

      • Seattle Moss

        Athy..
I do agree with you and believe that like the whig party before them the democrat party is finished
However,I think that the Republican party is recreating themselves as the party of equality and fairness with the goal of eliminating sexism for women.
I believe strongly that the women’s party will be within the Republican party.
I also see that the Clinton wing is taking over the McCain wing of the Republican party.
McCain will advance womens’ causes and place many women in his cabinet including Hillary.
Together we have a unified front against the Obamazoids which aim to destroy the America we cherish.

      • Northwest rain

        Nader can go f*** himself.

Nader is NOT a very nice person — he is hell to work for — according to former employees — whom Nader treated badly.

Nader does not have the capacity to say he is wrong — just as bushie and other narcissistic personalities cannot admit they are wrong.

A vote for Nader — is like throwing away a vote.

We have no other option — if Hillary isn’t the nominee — then we much vote McCain to save America.

Nader is no better than Obama.

Absolutely accurate analysis of a missed opportunity by Obama.

    He is another Jimmy Carter.

    • Mirlo

Jimmy Carter is not corrupt, he was naive and inexperienced, but has a good heart. There is no comparison with this arrogant, oportunistic, empty suit suffering from severe complex de grandeur.

      • Linda K

I agree about Jimmy Carter – a goodhearted man who was out of his depth. But he has done some wonderful things since his presidency.

      • Faustina

Jimmy Carter may not be corrupt but if he does not speak out against the corruption of the Democratic Party then he is a hypocrite.

He cannot go around the world overseeing fair elections and accept a Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts and at the same time ignore the outrageous disenfranchisement of millions of voters in his own party without earning that epithet and a special place in Dante’s Hell.

    • bert

He is worse than Jimmy Carter – and that takes some doing!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Cooney

You are not worthy of a single vote. You are an appeaser. Democrats beware. Barack Obama is a coward.

    Well said Larry.

  • Lucinda

FoxNews just showed a preview clip of Bill O’Reilly’s show tonight. Jesse Jackson was caught on tape criticizing Obama. Of course, Jackson quickly issued a statement recanting his words and explaining what he “meant to say”. Too bad. As the old saying goes, there’s no point in closing the barn door after the horse has run away.

    • bonnie

there’s no point in closing the barn door after the horse has bolted!

and bolted he did… he bolts every time. He changes his mind more times than changing his socks!

This evening at the fundraiser in NY with B Obama and Hillary Clinton B Obama forgot to mention Hillary and ask their supporters to help pay off her debt!

He left the stage then had to run back and say once again he forgot there is a paper on your seat please donate!

How is it he always forgets? How is it he always changes his mind?
I really do not understand all this!!!!! Maybe he forgot,
Maybe he hit the wrong button when voting?

Can we not put him in the barn and lock the door and throw away the key??

Thank you Larry for this piece and this site

No you don’t, you give away your power to anyone who pays you, you pimp your votes out to the highest bidder or the most politically expedient measure that minute, that crowd, that day, that vote..

enough is enough..we have seen who you are and fully half the DEMS will not support you, I suspect that number will continue to grow as you continue to pander to everyone except your own party and your own base..

we will see in August who stands for the real Democrat and the real Progressive and we ALL know who that is, her name is Hillary…

Thanks for the link to Kristen’s post. I really enjoyed reading it and knowing there are more and more voices calling for reconsideration of this “presumptive nominee”. If we could get just a couple of the Supers publicly switching, the movement could barrel roll pretty quickly in light of Obama’s severe flip-flopping. Come to think of it, “flip flopping” is just too tame a phrase to describe his moves of the past month. There’s got to be a more appropriate phrase.

What does a great patriot do when the President of the United States proclaims a military mission a success?
In Hillary’s case she bravely got up and clapped whole heartedly the success of the surge even though she knew it would cost her with the anti-American left.
    What did Obama do??

Obama sat on his hands and wished for defeat and retreat in Iraq?

Obama is no patriot. Just an opportunist!!!

    • Dan R.

Really? Is this the same Hillary Clinton who, in late 2007, basically went on national television and accused Gen. David Patraeus of lying about how things were improving in Iraq. Remember this? “Some of the things you’re saying here require a willing suspension of disbelief.”? Translation: “General, you’re a liar and you’re not telling me what I want to hear, not to mention the fruitbat anti-war base of my party whose support I need to be our nominee for president.”

Hillary Clinton, for the most part, has been every bit as much of a craven opportunist as Barack Obama when it comes to Iraq. The only Democrat in Congress who has any balls is Joe Lieberman.

      • Seattle Moss

        Poor DanR
The fact remains that Obama sat on his appeasement ass hoping that the Iraq war would continue to be a disaster up until the election.
        I find that disgraceful!!!
I want a Leader that will stand up for America not hope for it’s defeat.
Your Obama sat on his hands wishing for retreat and defeat.
Hillary like any great America got up and cheered the victories even though like most people was doubtful of the surges success.
Leaders are those that can see things in the present despite the beliefs they may have had in the past.

McCain has won the Iraq war!
Standing firm when all of us wanted to cut and run shows that he values America before self.

        McCain is a Leader!!

        Obama has lost his issue!
And Obamabots have lost their purpose for existence in this election.

        • d2d

          what he said!!!

      • Lou

It was this Hillary accusation towards Patraeus that got Bush to listen to McCain. McCain gave Bush a new plan and ordered him to use it and now the surege is working due to McCains plan. Ask McCain.
        Hillary is a motivator.

  • hillaryfighter

My take is that Oama believes he can use this this power to his advantage to spy on his political opponents after grabbing the white house.

That’s probably the true reason he voted for this FISA thing in the end.

    • beebop

I think he’s too in the pocket of telecom bundlers as are most of his “old boy’s club” and Botox Girl Gone Bad.

    • Lou

Obama is guilty of spying on people and that is why he was for the retroactive Bill. I for one had been tapped by Obama campaign in February & March. The phone company advised me to change my number and get a new unlisted number. When your line is tapped it’s obvious. They do it on a day to day basis and they hook into your line from one phone to another and then to your line. When they hang up they have to rehook again, thus the daily thing begins. Spare the further details.

  • Andy

Absolutely excellent post Larry J. Thank you!!

  • Dan R.

Hey Larry, what about the “whitey” tape? I’ve got a question for you. The ramblings I’ve seen on the internet state that the video was taped at an Operation PUSH conference held in Chicago in 2004. At a panel discussion featuring Michelle Obama and Louis Farrakhan’s wife, Michelle is alleged to have said, among other things … “What’s up with whitey? Why’d he let New Orleans drown?” Well, Hurricane Katrina didn’t occur until the summer of 2005. So, if the conference was held in 2004, how could she have referenced New Orleans?

    • http://americaninitaly.blogspot.com/ sarainitaly

The whole *whitey* *why’d he* was a made up example as an attempt to explain why Michelle was heard saying *whitey*. The Obama fans tried to create a situation where she was perhaps saying Why’d He not whitey.

I know people that have attended republican fundraising events where the tape was shown.

You can scoff at Larry all you want, but the tape exists.

      • Lucinda

Here’s the real explanation. Michelle is a big fan of Leave It To Beaver. She was simply recapping the episodes she’d just seen that day.
“Beaver was going to spend the night at Whitey’s house. On the way there, Whitey talked Beaver into climbing into the soup bowl on top of the billboard to see what made the steam come out. Then in the next episode, Whitey talked Beaver and Larry into joining a pigeon club, and each of the boys bought two pigeons. Beaver’s pigeons died, so Whitey and Larry gave them a funeral, because Beaver was quarantined in his room with Chicken Pox.”

Hey, it makes as much sense at the “why’d he” explanation that the trolls keep spreading around.

    • Disgusted

Message to trolls, Ummm Errr Internet staff,

When you begin to feel that things are not going according to plan, use these three steps

      1 Racist
      2 Republicans
      3 Whitey tape

Don’t forget that re-programming Ummm Errr New topics will be posted at 12 am cst.

      Thanks
      Lord and master
      Barack Obama

    • Lou

She was ranting about Bill C who attended the same conference but was in a differnt room.

      • Hope Floats

What’s on the Michelle Obama Rant Tape?

NOTE: Here’s what’s known so far. We will update this thread as new information comes in. As we have repeated several times, we have never seen the Michelle Obama Rant Tape ourselves — we started researching this about 4 weeks ago when we first caught rumors of a tape of Michelle ranting and raving and making remarks that were consistently called “stunning”. When we heard the GOP already had this tape, and it was most likely Giuliani’s opposition research team that found it, we tried to figure out where and when something like this could have been filmed. The only tools at our disposal were Google, the public library, and longtime residents of Chicago who have long, strong memories.

Obama has insisted on many occasions that Michelle is his most trusted and senior advisor: therefore, anything she thinks and says has great importance, because he has stated himself she is a tremendous influence on him and his decisions. That’s why this tape matters, and that’s why it’s important to look for it now instead of waiting for the Republicans to bring this out whenever THEY choose. Democrats never seem to learn this lesson: if there is something damaging a Democratic candidate knows is out there, he needs to bring it forward and expose it himself to the American public. Gore, Kerry, and Dukakis all thought they could hide their heads in the sand and not face up to the critical flaws in their candidacies — and they were all defeated because the Republicans do opposition research, while Democrats do not. Opposition research is boring and time consuming and not a lot of fun — but when it turns up something like a tape of a candidate’s spouse spouting hateful things in public, it’s obvious why the GOP invests their time in it (Swiftboating, Willie Horton, you name it).

After spending almost all free time Googling every possible combination of words and dates related to this tape and spending hours going through old newspapers at the library, these are the clues we were able to piece together on what we believe the GOP has in terms of the “Michelle Obama Rant Tape”:

The Michelle Obama Rant Tape was filmed between June 26th – July 1st 2004 in Chicago, IL at the Rainbow/PUSH Coalition Conference at the Sheraton Hotel in Chicago, specifically the women’s panel (Update and Note: the location was originally stated as “Trinity” in everything we heard, but it’s now become clear the tape could have only been filmed at the Sheraton during this conference. The Sheraton makes a lot more sense, and the setup of a panel discussion is exactly what’s been described as being on the tape. It’s smart to wonder if any Sheraton banquet employees remember this, because during a panel discussion of that size, there would be plenty of staff moving around in one of those banquet rooms).

Michelle Obama appeared as a panelist alongside Mrs. Khadijah Farrakhan and Mrs. James Meeks.

Bill Clinton spoke during the Conference, as did Bill Cosby and other speakers, but not at the panel Michelle attended.

Michelle Obama spoke at the “Women’s Event”, but referenced Bill Clinton in her rant — his presence at the conference was the impetus for her raving, it seems. (Update and Note: it’s been referred to as the “Women’s Event”, which on the Conference agenda seems to be a luncheon, with panel discussion; there could have been another “Women’s Event” that was not on the agenda, perhaps an event for the wives of speakers attending other events. Large conferences typically have events for the wives of speakers, and these are not always put onto the agendas sent to the public. This will, we’re sure, become clearer the more people look into the Conference and when exactly Michelle made her panel appearance).

For about 30 minutes, Michelle Obama launched into a rant about the evils of America, and how America is to blame for the problems of Africa. Michelle personally blamed President Clinton for the deaths of millions of Africans and said America is responsible for the genocide of the Tutsis and other ethnic groups. She then launched into an attack on “whitey”, and talked about solutions to black on black crime in the realm of diverting those actions onto white America. Her rant was fueled by the crowd: they reacted strongly to what she said, so she got more passionate and enraged, and that’s when she completely loses it and says things that have made the mouths drop of everyone who’s seen this.

        * Update and Note: Thinking back to 2004, and the period surrounding the Democratic Convention, several of us here in Chicago remember hearing something about the wife of a politician who said nasty things about Bill Clinton shortly before the Democratic Convention. At the time, we didn’t pay any attention to this, because we had no idea who the wife was (Michelle) or who her husband was (Barack); even after he gave his keynote address, we didn’t really pay any attention to the issue of this “wife of a politician” saying hateful things about Bill Clinton and Africa shortly before the Democratic Convention. However, in the last week or so, once the connections started being made that (1) the GOP was rumored to have a tape of Michelle ranting and raving, (2) the tape mentioned President Clinton, and (3) the tape was from 2004, the pieces fit together and we realized the person who we remembered saying horrible things about President Clinton in Chicago shortly before the Democratic Convention in 2004 was actually Michelle Obama (someone we had never heard of at the time).

Following up on this, we spoke with several people — 5, to be exact — who were in Chicago in the summer of 2004: 2 of whom went to the Rainbow/PUSH Coalition Conference (but who did NOT attend any women’s event). Each of them remembered hearing something about what was said (as noted above) about President Clinton, Africa, and the rest — by what really does appear to be Michelle Obama. YouTube was not around back in 2004, at least not like it is today, so we have no idea if there is a way to check for all the Chicago local and national media news broadcasts for any mention of “the wife of a Senate candidate” saying these negative things about President Clinton.

Several of us also remember hearing a very short blurb about this on the news that summer, but completely dismissed the comments against Clinton at the time because they are so ridiculous in light of all the Clinton Global Initiative has done for Africa. That’s actually why this has all stuck in our minds for 4 years: the incongruous fact that someone would say these horrible things about a man who built a global foundation to address the very issues this person rantedand raved about. Now, we noted all of this information in the last few paragraphs in this update because people have been asking all day how we know what details are on the tape — the only reason we didn’t spell this all out when we first made the post was because, frankly, just look at how long it has taken to show you why, exactly, we believe this panel discussion with Michelle is THE tape the GOP is waiting to use. It is an awful lot of explanation, and ultimately it boils down to people remembering what they heard 4 years ago, and it all making sense only now in light of the events of the past four weeks or so. Before you jump to criticism, remember that’s the whole POINT in looking for the video of Michelle’s panel discussion at this Conference. Either a group of people remember this incorrectly from the days surrounding the 2004 Convention, or that tape will be the “Michelle Obama Rant Tape” that’s being talked about at great length right now.

The “tape” is a DVD that Trinity United sold on its website, and possibly offered free for download up until March 2008 when Trinity’s site was scrubbed and the DVDs were no longer offered for sale. (Update and Note: “Trinity” here is also what’s consistently been repeated from day one about this “tape”; we believe the “tape” is actually a DVD and have called it a DVD here because in 2004 VHS was already being phased out, so it’s doubtful this recording was an actual “tape”. People just use the word “tape” to refer to recordings of events. Getting bogged down in the semantics of “tape” and DVD is silly — we assume “tape” and DVD are one and the same in this matter. There is a good question of whether it was Trinity that had the DVD for sale or the Conference organizers on another website, or if it was just a download, or if it was both for sale and a download, or if just Trinity or just the Conference organizers or both had it for sale. That’s not been determined yet. But, it has been consistently said that a GOP opposition research team got ahold of this “tape”, and got it by either purchasing it or downloading it online. It’s an established fact that prior to Jeremiah Wright’s emergence as an issue in this campaign, a large number of videos were available for both sale and download that have since been removed. The same is true for other sites that had this same content. Someone deliberately removed all that material because they realized there were things on those tapes that would harm the Obama campaign. If not, then why were the tapes removed from sale or download?).

This outburst happened just one month before the 2004 Democratic Convention, when Barack Obama delivered the keynote address.

UPDATED: It seems really easy for Chicago local media, especially, to determine whether or not this is the right tape of Michelle Obama. All they need to do is pull the tape from this 2004 Conference (particularly the panel Michelle was on), which should be readily available (since this was a very large multi-day event). All a journalist needs to do is watch this tape: if this is not the right one, they’d know immediately and this issue would be debunked. But, logically, this seems to be the most likely source of the tape people have been talking about at NoQuarterUSA.net

UPDATE #2: It’s also being reported that ABC-7 news anchors moderated a panel at the Conference that appears to be the one Michelle Obama participated in. If so, then it’s reasonable to believe ABC-7 in Chicago has footage from the panel discussion. It’s also been consistently said on the blogs since word of this “tape” first broke that a network has the footage and is sitting on it — and that the network in question is ABC. Once again, if ABC-7 does have tape from this panel discussion, they could solve this mystery today by releasing it all on their website — particularly the 30 minutes or so of Michelle Obama speaking — so we can see once and for all exactly what she said that day. The ABC-7 anchors who moderated could also come out and definitively say what Michelle Obama said on the panel (or Michelle could come out herself and recount what she said). That would get to the bottom of this.

**BREAKING NEWS** I have heard from 3 different sources there is a tape out there of John McCain throwing a newborn puppy out of a 6th story window in downtown Tuscon. I haven’t seen the tape myself, but this information comes from people I trust. It is making the rounds through Democratic circles. Apparently Bob Shrum has a copy. They are holding the tape, but Obama operatives have already gotten their hands on it and are waiting for the general to release it.

It was filmed by a freelance reporter from NBC-3 Tuscon. Apparently McCain had to granny toss the puppy out of the window as he is not able to overhand toss due to injuries suffered in Vietnam. The puppy was a lab-mix and estimated to br around 3 weeks old.

The McCain camp s denying the story, but I think it is important he addresses this. If he doesn’t, we all have to assume this story is true.

I can’t believe the MSM is ignoring this story!

umm continues to be a brownshirt wannabe and his day has been made brighter by Obama’s yes vote on FISA. umm hopes to be spying on us in 2009 and, with any luck, providing evidence that will lead to our convictions on thoughtcrimes, crimes of association, and crimes of speech against his leader.

  • jawbone

Now, thank goodness Hillary voted to support the Consitution, the Bill of Rights, and our civil liberties. Thank no one that Obama voted against all that.

He apparently thinks the Unitary Executive needs all the power it can accrue, and, until the Supremes (want to give odds on likelihood?) strike this bill down as unconstitutional, he will have voted the power to spy on Americans to himself.

Power corrupts, etc. In this case, the possibility of power has already corrupted.

But, why did 44% of Senate Dems join 100% of Repubs to give this gift of power to the power made Bush the Unworthy???

I do not recognize whatever party these people think they belong to as my Democratic Party. I am sick to my stomach.

    • jawbone

“Power made” makes some sense, but I meant “power mad” about BushBoy.

  • trist

Finally after all that “I was against the war” jargon, all that chest thumping false pride in claiming that if he had been in the senate he WOULD have done the “right” thing, when he had NOTHING to lose. Were is he now?

Where are those scruples? Where is that show of superior judgment? Where is the so call NEW leader who will do what is in the country’s best interest, instead of *his*?

If that person ever shows up, someone let me know, okay?

    conspiracy break:

Whenever HRC does or says anything noteworthy which even BM has to report BO’s crew drops some distracting personal bomb. It’s usually more positive but on days of slim pickings even anti-BO tidbits will do.

JJ lays an egg on Sunday which is coincidentally reported today. Why the delay?

Is this a strategy for BO to let non-AA Americans know that his support among AA’s isn’t as overwhelming as reported and is it, in fact, a way for BO to distance himself from AA’s?

    MARY POPPINS POLIIICS

That purveyor of truth, one Miss Mary Poppins, liked to sing her wisdom as she did so loquaciously in the song “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious!”
When trying to express oneself, it’s frankly quite absurd, to leaf through lengthy lexicons to find the perfect word. A little spontaneity keeps conversation keen, You need to find a way to say, precisely what you mean…

Tell that to politicians who have mastered the art of saying nothing.

    Um-diddle-diddle-um-diddleye, Um-diddle-diddle-um-diddleye.

Wondering what I’m talking about? Check out this John Edwards interview on NPR. When asked if he would accept an offer to be VP, after being told that it’s an “open secret” that he’s on the short list, Edwards answered:

“I’m glad to hear that’s an open secret, ‘cause I didn’t know it,” he said. “My answer to that is: I’ve run for vice president. I’ve run for president twice. I would do anything that I felt that I could do to serve this country. But I think it’s a huge presumption for me or anybody else to suggest what Senator Obama may decide. To answer your question directly, I don’t expect to be asked. Have no expectation about it at all. I will — anything that Senator Obama asks me to do, including this, including campaigning for him, I intend to do because what I am going to do, I intend to take seriously. Because what I intend to do is use anything in my power to make sure that he’s the next president.” Asked again if he’d accept VP or a Cabinet post, he says: “I’m prepared to seriously consider anything, anything he asks me to do for our country.”

    Um-diddle-diddle-um-diddleye, Um-diddle-diddle-um-diddleye.

There is no better equivocator than the man who calls himself “a new kind of politician,” Barack Obama. Obama has brought the art of saying nothing to new heights. In prepared speeches his words are eloquent almost poetic. But soaring rhetoric is oftentimes a cloak of deception, an attempt to varnish truth.

In impromptu news conferences Obama is often strained in his performances, his speech slow, painfully deliberative and annoyingly peppered with “ums” and “ahs,” a tactic long-used to allow a speaker time to think before he speaks.

In trying to blur distinction, politicians often find themselves in trouble. Obama found that out just last week in a speech in Fargo, N.D. when he promised to make a “thorough assessment” of his Iraq policy in his coming visit there and “continue to gather information” to “make sure that our troops are safe, and that Iraq is stable,” before he commits to a policy.

Apparently, Obama didn’t hem and haw enough. Soon, he found himself pounced upon by the press and the left wing bloggers, the bloggers prepared to keep Obama out of the Oval Office if he doesn’t stand firm on his stated position on the Iraq War: to pull his troops out of Iraq within 16 months of his taking the oath of office.

Now fighting being labeled a flip-flopper on his Iraq position, Obama, a few days later, said all the “confusion” over his Iraq statement was not his fault but rather the media’s.

    The “media’s?”

“I was surprised by how finely calibrated every single word was measured,” Obama said. “I was a little puzzled by the frenzy I set off.”
Mary Poppins: When Stone Age men were chatting, merely grunting would suffice.

Obama was hoisted by his own petard. Up until now equivocation has been his friend. But it appears that we’ve progressed a little since the Stone Age – that Age of Primary when the media was so taken by Barack Obama they apparently weren’t listening to a thing he said.

Today men are required to issue more than grunts, and politicians are being asked to communicate exactly what they mean and mean precisely what they say. The mainstream media is finally starting to make demands of the candidates, listen to what they have to say, and hold them accountable.

    Here we go!

Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious! Even though the sound of it is something quite atrocious! If you say it loud enough, you’ll always sound precocious, Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious!

    Or said backwards:
    Suoicodilaipxecitsiligarfilacrepus!

According to politician-speak, is there really any difference?

    Um-diddle-diddle-um-diddleye, Um-diddle-diddle-um-diddley!

no doubt BO’s support of the FISA bill is to pave the way for Google, Yahoo, and his netroot friends to further their McCarthyism in preparation for his totalitarian regime.

When 1/2 or more of the country won’t follow his lead, if, by slim chance, he is elected, then he can only resort to suppression, censorship, Stalinesque Show Trials, smoke and mirror football field cult rallies to govern.

    Brilliant!

Obama has failed once and for all!

Now, let us set up a fund to get a media blitz out there to the masses before the convention that drives this very singular point home.

I feel like the point that Larry has made in this piece frames the anti BO for the people to see in a simple manner without any bullshit.

The masses need a no bull shit perspective from this direction that Larry has taken.

They are not going to get it from the RNC………

So, we must take BO out plain and simple with one piece that says it all with no bullshit and the piece that sells the people and the super delegates who are sitting out there watching their pet barky BO screwing up the DNC and their futures because they supported him.

So, how to we get this plain and simple message to the masses?

Id like to help you in your struggle to be free

There must be fifty ways to leave Obama
    Fifty ways to leave Obama

You dont need to be coy, roy
    Just get yourself free

You dont need to discuss much

    Just listen to me <———–
    Hop on the bus, gus
You dont need to discuss much
Just drop off the key, lee
    And get yourself free

She said it grieves me so to see you in such pain
I wish there was something I could do to make you smile again
I said I appreciate that and would you please explain
    About the fifty ways

She said why dont we both just sleep on it tonight
And I believe in the morning youll begin to see the light
And then she kissed me and I realized she probably was right
There must be fifty ways to leave Obama
    Fifty ways to leave Obama

Just slip out the back, jack
    Make a new plan, stan
You dont need to be coy, roy

“He [Barack Obama] is not not worthy of a single vote. He is an appeaser. Democrats beware. Barack Obama is a coward.”

Looking forward to another post in which you tell us what you really think about BHO.

BTW: I think Obama is toast even with the “super” delegates. He may actually get the nomination in Devner, but then comes a campaign against him that he cannot envision.

It’ll be one in which all of his whining, blaming, bloviating, prevaricating, jettisoning, mocking, hiding, evading and ignoring will not get him elected.

And it’ll be one in which he’ll be toasted with his own words–dare I say “flip-flopping”?–and empty, though leftist record.

    • Hope Floats

The Republicans need to get cracking. McCain just released his economic plan today; it was daring, to say the least. Obama has an ad attacking McCain on his energy policy. McCain needs to attack Obama on his economic plan and keep hitting away at him, portraying him as a classic tax-and-spend liberal and a liar. Jennifer Rubin had an excellent piece on this today. I think McCain should have started doing this two weeks ago, but he was traveling.

  • HillGirl

Because of his 3 names, his affliation with Ayers, he voted for it so he won’t look soft on terrorism. That ship sailed a lonnng time ago!

  • HillGirl

Also, he decided to vote a real vote rather than his pretend vote of “present” because McCain didn’t vote on it.
Read it how you want – he voted in favor of it – not because he believes in it but, once again, it is how it will look to voters. He benefits. LadiDa.

I noted McCain was absent. Ha ha.

Sen Obama’s supporters are silent about his FISA vote because they :
    a) Can’t fathom his motives
    b) Dont understand the significance of his vote
    c) Dont care about FISA-just care about Obama
    d) Can’t face the truth, are feeling very shell-shocked rght now and cant respond to anything

However, many blog sites that support Sen Obama are instead trying to divert attention away from Obama’s FISA let down and instead are focused on making Sen Obama appear as a ‘victim’ again.

They are spending WAY TOO MUCH TIME on Rev Jackson’s remark about Obama-even AFTER Rev Jackson apologized…

    • WildChild

You forgot the one that I’ve been seeing on other blogs. The BOBOweenies support BOBO’s vote and are actively defending him. These people have crossed over to the dark side of the fringe.

They are not silent. I have a post going up soon about BO’s supporters protesting his vote. They are righteously pissed and feel totally screwed over, which they have been. Repeatedly.

True for the real left-leaning souls. A lot of Obama supporters hang out on progressive blogs, but they are clueless as to what that really means.

Thank you, thank you, Larry. I am so glad noquarterusa is willing to tell the whole truth and nothing but the truth. As you inform us, it only takes 175 superdelegate votes to give us a qualified and approved-by-the-voters presidential candidate. At the same time, it also takes Hillary, herself, being willing to sign the petition to put her name in nomination at the Convention.

I hope you and a host of others are whispering in her ear to be willing to take this step. Without her assertiveness in this regard, we are still left with The Bozo — and our country still has to face the danger that he might get elected. No one can foretell the future.

In case anyone was feeling all soft and fuzzy about the “Unity Thing,” check out the NYTimes front page today (I used to respect the Times, being a NYer. Stopped reading in February when Dowd and Frank Rich started foaming at the mouth):

A prominent donor to Senator Obama recently sent an email plea to other supporters, asking them—for the sake of Democratic unity—to write checks to Senator Hillary Clinton to help retire her $23 million in campaign debt. Some of the replies are unprintable, given the coarse language, the donor said. A sampling of others included:
“Why would I help pay off debts that Hillary amassed simply to keep damaging Senator Obama?” [Translation: You see, it’s all Hillary’s fault. She pointed out all those horrible issues like his lack of experience, and his phony policy positions.]
“Not a penny for that woman. Or her husband. Or—god forbid—Mark Penn.”
Mr. Obama has asked his top donors to help raise money for her debt, and so far they have come up with less than $100,000. “A paltry sum,” in the words of one Clinton official.
Among the complaints from Obama campaign officials is that Mrs. Clinton’s expectation for help has been a moving target; in other words, it is unclear how much money from Obama supporters will be enough to satisfy the Clintons…Mrs. Clinton is helping Obama with the understanding that he would do more for her. [Translation: They are just greedy insatiable power mongers.]
Clinton donors and campaign officials remain surprised, and some, offended, that Mr. Obama has refused to ask his entire list of donors, more than 1.5 million people, to send [small donations] for Mrs. Clinton’s debt. Obama officials said they did not want to distract their donors for the main task at hand, raising money to defeat Mr. McCain.
Alan Patricof, a top Clinton fund-raiser and family friend: “I think most people thinks that helping Barack is the best way to get help from the Obama camp to help retire her debt, which is a major source of concern for her right now.”

WE HAVE TO PAY OFF HER DEBT! She is being held hostage.

Too bad the “Constitutional Law Perfesser” couldn’t have voted “present”, or “pressed the wrong button” like he did so many times as an Illinois lawmaker.

Now, if you want to read some satire, just go to all of the Obama blogs and read all about the courage Obama showed today.

Democrats beware. Barack Obama is a coward.

    Absa-friggin-lutely.

All this preposterous bloviating about what a courageous visionary he is based on what he MIGHT have done if he had been in the Senate in 2002. Hillary doesn’t vote “present.” She shows up and takes a stand, even if it’s not always perfect. If not, she takes the heat and adapts to new information that is available. Obama is a shapeshifter. If McCain’s camp can’t make a case for distrusting Obama he doesn’t deserve to win. It’s a no-brainer.

  • Teakwood

Mr. Johnson you are not having any trouble “defining” BO with this one, he’s just a regular wind up toy. This igit doesn’t get it. I have been asking myself why he is so politically tone deaf. There was no reason what so ever for BO to vote for the bill. It was going to pass no matter how he voted even if it was not on principles, which he is missing all together.

I do have take issue with the first part of the sentence…,
Barack no longer has the moral authority
and forgive me in advance for taking it out of context but the words “Barak” and “moral authority” should not be allowed in the same sentence. He never had it and and never will. :)

All one has to do is get a player piano called BO, and name that tune.

To all the bizarre latte-drinking Obama worshipers, feeble minded Obamacons and other riff-raff liberals!
Ladies and Gentlemen: The results of yesterdays U.S. Senate Roll Call Votes 110th Congress – 2nd Session also known as the FISA vote…
(Senators and their votes in alphabetical order..)
    Clinton (D-NY), Nay
    McCain (R-AZ), Not Voting
    Obama (D-IL), Yea

Of course Obama- insane diehard activists still defends this flip-flopper of the century, but REAL actions means “little more” than empty words. And sen. Obamas actions are undeniable. Here we have the champion of the little guy the action hero of “Change we can believe in” securing the future of GWB awkward legacy – the death kiss of the Constitution as we know it.
Personally I find it tragicomic that “big-industry” & “status-quo” Hillary voted against it. Even “old maverick” McCain tried to reinvent himself: He didn’t vote at all – with the underlying message: “I don’t want anything to do with it, but I can’t afford to vote against my conservative party.. Not in this year.. “
    - Need I say more?
“That’s the fucking change we all can believe in!”

  • DancingOpossum

Hat tip to Thomas for invoking the great Paul Simon. I always loved that song. The story goes that Simon was with his daughter at her school bus stop and as she got on the bus she said something like, “Get on the bus, Gus” and that same day, he sat down and wrote the song.

Hey Ted and Francis, when are we going to see the famous antiwar speech Obama gave that nobody has ever seen and that had to be “recreated” to fool his ever-gullible supporters?

  • DancingOpossum

They are righteously pissed and feel totally screwed over, which they have been. Repeatedly.

Yes, but it’s depressing howmany of them continue to support him. (And to bash Hillary, of course. Her “no” vote was just a political ploy designed to make Dear Leader look bad.) They threaten to withhold money and stop working for the campaign–but he still has their vote.

“Honey, you’ve cheated on me since the day we were married and when I was eight months pregnant you broke my jaw and ran off with my best friend. That’s it!We are through! Oh, I mean I’ll still be married to you, but no more breakfast in bed! That’s it!! And I mean it this time!”

    Sigh. It’s tooooo depressing.

    I was wondering:
Do any of you think that Hillary could actually receive the nomination at the convention?

  • apachegrl

    “Obama’s mask coming off

As you may recall, back in Jan 08 or so, Obama appeared on S&L and removed his mask on national TV. This is the same Obama that has no problem stealing a nomination (with the help of DNC) that belongs to Senator Clinton. I will not vote for him no as he does not need my “racist” vote. remember he said Hillary supporters were not voting for her but were voting against him because they are racist!!! He should be ashamed of himself. I am glad the rest of the world is seeing Obama in the same light as many of us have seen him for a while now.”

This is well said,as many of us saw through his mask long ago,why do you think we were and are so opposed to him? BUT ,we were called racists as so many Ob and media people labeled us.Don’t some of the Ob rock star fans realise this is a very undemocratic thing to stifle people’s dissent ?to me just like the abortion issue and women feeling a little blue comment ,seems we heard that about Hillary in his comment that she was a little blue after the primary.YES she was something but i don’t think it was blue.

It’s more like his buddy Jesse Jackson said and rightfully so , he was being condesending to blacks in his talks .

Are you actually keeping track of the backward stepping OB’s done since Hillary left the campaign? Another thing, that will keep us voting for him but then again we did not feel his change message he was putting out there and his fans were swooning about the NEW kind of politician well, well, it sucks to be a fool! wheres the outrage from people that went crazy over bosnia hype and how dishonest Hillary was supposed to be? Well guess what, that only hurt Hillary and not us. the flip flops OB did in the last two weeks DOES hurt all of us and the FISA thing cannot be dismissed saying like some of his sheep ,well it was going to pass anyway ,so just like in his book he said he was a blank slate and he was what people wanted him to be! Is this what we want ,a chameleon?? a coward? go along to get ahead and damn the standards needed in a president!

We do have a choice and its the convention and to those that say its not ,they are still being blindsided and will let our country get a president that makes excuses and the sheep follow at all costs, the country be damned. the DNC better wake up and nominate the person that has credentials to run this country and has plans for many of the needs the country has problems with. If the DNC hadn’t interferred in the primary process and gave Ob the push to being the selected nominee we would be focusing on issues.do any of you notice the issues get pushed aside and OB always has someone misquoting, dissing him or like the interview ,it was a mistake,of course the favorite you are rasist if you disagree! that is getting old and AA people should see through his using this as an excuse no matter how much they want An AA in office. Powell would have been better as well as any number of AA people qualified and experienced. WAKE UP this one of the most important times in our country life and the constitution be waylaid isn’t the way to lead. make the DNC accountable .

I agree with Sen. Obama’s vote. I would not have wanted that bill to be passed (or, even written that way) but it was. The FISA court has existed since (what?) 1976 and wasn’t used as often previously than our current president has used it. There was another bill brought forward months ago that was worse than the one eventually passed.

Of course we can input our perspectives and vote as we choose. But I don’t think this bill’s passage is the end of the world. There are some stronger protections in this bill than previously existed. Is it perfect? Far from it. Is it a capitulation as many have suggested? No. It’s curious that such a furor has been circulated over this after the fact. How many of us were writing/calling/visiting our representatives as this bill was under consideration? I don’t know (and whether or not you did you still have the right to state your piece, no?)

Does this show that Sen. Obama is a politician? Well, yes, isn’t that what he’s currently doing for a living? We’re talking about politics. Just like other words, ‘politics’ has gathered fungus over the years. ‘Lobbyist’ and ‘lawyer’ are two other examples that we choose to demean. So it goes. I’m certainly not going to argue for us to treat terms fairly because they might not deserve condemnation from us. But they’re only words.

Will Sen. Obama be a better president than G.W.Bush? I believe so. I’m going to vote for him. Will Sen. McCain make a better president? I think he won’t have the chance because Bush has pissed off too many constituencies over the past 7 years. BTW, Sen. McCain didn’t vote ‘yea’ or ‘nah’ for this bill. We could say, “He didn’t have the guts! to say what he believed in.” On the other hand, maybe he’s a good enough politician to know that the bill would probably pass without his vote. I won’t condemn him because he’s in the race of his life and these are decisions they each make.

Sen. Clinton? I respect her and support her. I like to have her on my side in the Senate. But I didn’t support her during the primaries and I also believe that an Obama/Clinton ticket wouldn’t be very good. I’ve been wrong in my political votes going back to the ’80s; but again, I only do what I do.

I have been asked (in my small circle) whether the ‘Rodham Clinton backers’ will support Sen. Obama’s campaign, Sen. McCain’s or sit out of this election. I don’t know but I think many will support and vote for Sen. Obama and a low percentage will either vote Republican or not at all. It’s not too bad (whether or not one cares about the respective Sens. votes on women’s issues) because it always happens that some of the defeated will join the eventual representative and of course, for whatever reason, others will not. It would be great, but we each inform ourselves and decide (who, if) to vote for.

If anyone can organize the fabled ’18 million’ to vote as one block then I applaud you. It took Sen. Clinton two years to get to that number and she has money, power, fame, connections, etc. behind her.

  • beachnan

Her 18 million votes were real. No fable there. The only one whose record is a fable is Mr. Empty Suit himself, BO.

I guess you need to read more about America’s role in protecting western civilization and the world against Islamic terrorism.
We now have two allies in the middle east that protects the other gulf states.
Iraq and Israel are now uniquely allied with the United States.

The Iraq war years from now will be viewed as a brilliant strategy for protecting the Western World and preventing World Resource wars.
