Did the FBI or Obama Send A Message to Israel?

(Bumped up from earlier today.)

Last night’s arrest of a U.S. citizen who thought he was spying for Israel is going to unleash a fascinating dynamic. The Washington Post reported this morning:

Stewart D. Nozette, 52, was arrested on a charge of attempted espionage and is being held pending an initial appearance Tuesday in U.S. District Court in Washington, authorities said.

Authorities said the charges stemmed an undercover sting operation in which an FBI agent posed as an Israeli spy. Nozette allegedly passed the agent sensitive information through a “dead drop” at a D.C. post office in recent weeks, authorities said.

Nozette worked for the Energy Department’s Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory from 1990 through 1999, prosecutors said. He was credited with helping develop a radar in 1994 that suggested ice on the south pole of the moon.

He was president of the Alliance for Competitive Technology, a nonprofit group he founded in 1990. He has held security clearances as high as top secret and had regular access to classified information as recently as 2006, federal authorities said./blockquote>

I think this was a great move by the FBI. I am fascinated that some of the conservative blogs, Hot Air in particular, are averting their eyes and not discussing this.

This is huge. The FBI was smarting after its case against the American Israeli Political Action Committee was tossed out earlier this year. I do not think that will happen in this case. They have arrested a guy who thought he was working for Israel.

You can be sure this has sent a chill down the spines of the Mossad operatives working in the United States to recruit human sources. It is not going to stop the Israelis but it will make them extra nervous for sure. I do not get too upset when these kinds of cases break. That would be like getting upset at your dog for licking his balls or sniffing your crotch. That’s what dogs do. Intelligence organizations try to recruit people who have access to information they want. Very simple. I understand why Israel is nervous about the United States plans and policies. They want inside our knickers (and if you think we are not doing the same to Israel then I would like to sell you a bridge in Brooklyn).

What will Israel do in retaliation? Their priority is protecting Israel. They are certainly scrambling today to find out if this is the FBI doing this on its own or if it was an action that had the blessing of the Obama team. The answer to why this happened will drive the reaction of Israel and its spies in the United States.

Grat post – but really Larry: “That would be like getting upset at your dog for licking his balls or sniffing your crotch.” How do you train your dogs???? Geez.

  • Typewriterstreaming

    I meant GREAT, great post.

  • TeakWoodKite

I am wondering why he was targeted in the first place. He must of come up on someones radar and it usaully is in connection with something else.

Thanks Mr. Johnson for the insights…

(PS. just an FYI that your stranded Blockquote is acting like the dog again… :) ))

  • hokma

As far as motive to set this guy up the article said that:

an FBI agent wrote in court papers that Nozette acted as a technical consultant for an unnamed aerospace firm that the Israeli government owned. From 1998 through 2008, the scientist “answered the company’s questions and, in return, Nozette received regular payments from the company,” the agent wrote. The agent wrote that the Israeli company paid Nozette $225,000 during that span.

Although consulting such a company is not a crime, it does show that he might do more for money.

Beyond that there is nothing here that he was ever a spy for Israel or that Israel had used him for more than for the consulting to the aerospace company.

There may be more here that is not being said, but so far I don’t see how this could affect Mossad.

    Larry,

Thanks for posting this – It is a fascinating story.

My reactions are mixed in all honesty.

As an American, I am extremely grateful that there are people in our intelligence services like you and some at the FBI, DIA, CIA and etc. It is the only thing that makes this country safe these days.

On the other hand, given who is entrenched and controlling our Executive Branch of
our government right now, I can certainly empathize with Israel’s concerns about the safety of their country.

I probably am not the type of person for the jury in this case.

  • Mark – Ft. Laud.

    Larry,
Can you give me an update on the 10,000+ Chinese spys in the country? You know the ones that stole the F22A Raptor. What about the 5,000 Russians stealing?

At least Israel is on our side. I’m not defending them and I’m glad we busted this traitor. After all, Israel has attempted and will continue to attempt to steal our tech and sell it….to the Chinese.

Isn’t this wonderful. However we really need to go after the Chinese.

  • http://NoQuarterUSA.net Larry Johnson

You obviously don’t understand. In the future anyone who gets an entreaty to spy for Israel (or consult for Israel) will be thinking in the back of their mind that they’re being set up. Let’s not forget Jonathan Pollard. At a minimum this will make it tougher for Israel to recruit spies.

Let me re-emphasize–I don’t begrudge Israel, the Chinese, the Russians or the French spying on us. Hell, I’d be worried if they were not. It is just the nature of the beast. There is no such thing as a “friendly” intelligence service. The purpose of any intelligence service worth its salt is to get the inside info. Period.

  • ladydawnelle

    hmmmmmmmm, verrrrrry in-te-re-stink dahhh-lingka!

TS clearance – they set him up? This was just to see who would take the bait? Jezz thanks for reminding me that for every intelligence officer there are probably 2 COUNTER-intels (or more?) to fk with America’s head? lol

this sure gives me a splitting headache
lol (and I’m paying pretty close attention) I can’t even fathom how dunce the GP is in reality. The net helps.
Thanks Larry for “keeping it real” (ala Dave Chappelle)

  • hokma

    Get it. Good point.

  • mountainaires

Fascinating. Thanks for highlighting the story, I hadn’t seen it anywhere else.

  • Zoom

At least Israel is on our side.

After all, Israel has attempted and will continue to attempt to steal our tech and sell it….to the Chinese.

    Which is it?

  • Country First

Thanks for the story. But, really Larry, I see no reason conservative blogs would deliberately avoid this story. Perhaps they are busy reporting on the Muslim Mafia, take over of the internet, or attempts to silence Fox News.

  • lawnmower

    nellie:

“given who is entrenched and controlling our Executive Branch of
    our government right now”

u mean that list of “dem jews?”

rahm, axelgrease, summers, b. shalom bernake, etc etc

    u mean those entrenched people?

  • Mark – Ft. Laud.

    Zoom,
I see your point. A spy is a spy regardless if they are “on” or “not on our” side.
    Mark

  • Docelder

It was just on Fox that the FBI was watching Nozette anyway and approached him as a false Israel agent. So, Israel wasn’t apparently involved from what Fox was reporting. The FBI could just as well posed as an Iranian agent. But then the news headline would have been different. So, was the headline the real impetus for the sting?

  • Diana L. C.

I can’t speak for Larry, but I have always just let my dogs and cats train me. That sounds like dog behavior that I’ve been trained to overlook.

My hope is that the FBI is doing this as part of their jobs. (I guess, taking orders from Obama is something I wouldn’t want any government agency doing at this point.)

    Yes lawnmower I do.

I was raised in a town where the population was 85% Jewish ethnic. As with every other religious/ethnic/social groups, some claiming membership do not necessarily adhere to the morals/values/principals of the majority. Sadly, this is blatantly true in the current White House.

    To answer further queries:

    1. No, I am not Jewish, but was raised Catholic, and have been agnostic for the last 30 years.

    2. Yes, I knew Jewish people who had been in the Death Camps, and also had two of my own relatives (non-Jews) who also experienced the horrors there. I am extremely familiar with the entire history of Europe from 1919 through 1970.

Actions past and present define my support or antipathy toward a person. Frankly I do not give a damn about a persons ethnic background, religion nor the color of their skin. I care very much about their actions toward others, and toward this country.

  • Zoom

The FBI could just as well posed as an Iranian agent.

Not likely. He wanted to spy specifically for Israel:

“Prosecutors also quote an unnamed colleague who said that the scientist remarked that if the US government ever tried to put him in jail for an unrelated criminal offense, he would go to Israel or another foreign country and “tell them everything” he knows.
Then, in January of this year, Mr Nozette allegedly travelled to another foreign country with two computer memory sticks and apparently did not return with them.”

  • Portia Elizabeth

Fox News reported on this story this morning. Perhaps they’re a news org after all.

  • Portia Elizabeth

So the sting op began long before BO took office.

I think it’s sort of a shame Israel and the US can’t share intel instead of having to steal it. Aren’t we allies?

(and no, I’m not Jewish in case anyone thinks I’m biased)

  • Right on the Left Coast

If Gibbs directly answers a planted question about it from the WaPo or NYT, then I bet the WH knew all about this and it shows their cards that they want to make a very public statement about it. It will be interesting to see how much play this gets from the WH.

  • http://noquarter foxyladi14

    spies every where

  • Docelder

    But look at the headline

American Moon scientist Stewart Nozette ‘tried to spy for Israel’

Implied in the headline is that Israel somehow was a participant. We don’t know any such thing. Once again we are seeing headlines shaped. If all people really get are the headlines, and for most people that is probably more than they actually get… then Israel is getting punked here. Sure the guy wanted to make money for information. We don’t know so far who he would and would not sell to. We only see the shaped message.

  • Portia Elizabeth

    VERY GOOD POINT!!

  • TeakWoodKite

hokma, my thanks. I was just reading the part Mr. Johnson had quoted and (being at work) didn’t have time to read the whole article.

Mr. Johnson, do you think it is to be known if it came from the WH or DOJ?

  • Matt

I hope I won’t offend any Jewish visitors to this blog, but Israel is the mot destabilizing and negative power in the world. The US could have had wonderful relations with Muslim nations, Americans would benefit from learning the greatness of Islam, and the US could actually spend the money they give Israel to struggling countries instead. Imagine – if the US would not support Israel, there would be no hunger in Africa, no oppression of Palestinian innocents, and no wars in many countries around the world. For example, everybody knows that Cuba is in this dismal state because Israel has made Jewish bankers starve Cuba. The same about Algeria, Morocco, Libya and many other countries that are seen as “bad” countries: North Korea, Russia, Syria, Iran, Iraq, etc. These countries have always been presented negatively by the Mossad and its cronies in the US.

My only hope is that Our President Mr. Barack Obama, The Recipient Of The Nobel Peace Prize, The One Leader Who Truly Represents The Oppressed will earn His Nobel prize by putting an end to Israel’s control of America, control of banks and control over the world supply of food, money and medicine. Our President Barack Obama Will Heal Our Wounds And The Wounds Of The World.

I hope to see the day where Israel is no more and the world will be bathed in peace and friendship amongst all peoples. This arrest is good news to all peace-loving people like myself and the millions of oppressed people who suffer under the yoke of Israel, Zionism and the Mossad.

  • lawnmower

so, by your logic, because jews died in concentration camps we should unquestioningly allow israel to spy on us? out of some kind of miguided calculus of sympathy?

    not buying it. sorry.

and i don’t know what your personal autobio has to do with anything. everyone’s got a sob story.

but after re-reading your intitial post, i can see you’re torn. and you make some sense. so i won’t nag you anymore ;)

  • Ferd Berfle

Perhaps a more appropriate appropriate answer is that we spy and they spy. We spy to protect our country; Israel spies to protect their country. The ethics of such is where the arguments begin. I don’t blame us for espionage and don’t blame the Israelis, either. When the Israelis use an American is where I have heartburn as that person is a traitor to the US. And I imagine that whatever spying we do with respect to Israel that is performed by Israeli citizens is frowned upon there, as well.

  • Smart-Jazz-Just Me

About time. Remember the Israeli Art Students back on 2001/02? It’s about time we sent a signal to our friends in Israel….

  • Matt

    Dear Mr. Johnson,
Clearly your blog is under the control of the Mossad too, because my comments have been erased by some person who does not like the truth about Israel to be said out loud.
I hope you have the decency to display my truthful, accurate and unbiased comments.
If you don’t, the Mossad and the Zionists have won.
    Respectfully,
    Matt Everett

ps: you may be an ex-CIA guy but you don’t have access to stuff that I can read at bollyn.com, I’m sad to say.

  • Docelder

You name off a master list of communist and totalitarian regime governments and think their biggest problem is Israel? The only thing oppressing these countries is themselves. But not to worry, our dear leader… his Nobel prize in hand is trying to catch us up with them. I hope he is even a greater and more of a miserable failure at this mission as he is at leading his own party. A bigger flop at changing this nation as a whole than he was at revitalizing South Chicago. We can only hope.

  • trixta

Our President Barack Obama Will Heal Our Wounds And The Wounds Of The World.

    Keep guzzling that kool-aid, Bot!

  • Concerned

    I just puked.

Greatness of Islam? No hunger in Africa? No wars? “bad” countries: North Korea, Russia, Syria, Iran, Iraq, etc??!!

The One Leader Who Truly Represents The Oppressed?

This has gotta be a joke.

  • glennmcgahee

What was the point of the article naming conservative blogs as ignoring the story – Seems lots of news organizations did the same. Was the target of the article the spying or a hit job on the named websites.

  • JRD

Is there anything to eat in that basement or do you just exist on Kool-Aid?

  • wags101

Yeah, about as funny as spying on a country who is supposed to be your “friend”, imagine what they will do to contries that are not friendly.

  • Regina

The only thing the Muslims have given us is oil and terrorism. Name muslims who have contributed to the progress of the world….science, medicine, technology……their culture prevents them from being a positive force……I dare you to name some in this modern world……the real enemy is……..

  • Docelder

Well they did also bring us coffee and alcohol. They are probably more Western than they might like to admit.

  • Regina

    Matt
You need to see a schrink….the kool aid you have been drinking has given you a disease called paranoia……you can’t differentiate between friends and enemies.

  • Jack

What a moron. Read about the Muslim contributions to medicine, mathematics, astronomy, literature, geology, navigation, etc. Such bigotry on this website from commenters. Imagine if someone said “what have BLACKS ever done for society?” But with Muslims, no one cares. One day it might be you who is slandered. Better defend all people so they can defend you later.

  • goldengrahme

“and i don’t know what your personal autobio has to do with anything. everyone’s got a sob story.”

Among many other comments which made me cringe, the
above made me angry. A few personal squibs are allowed and if tasteful, not objectionable. Cold,
    very cold, IMO

But more important to the issue, does anyone with a good understanding of law think the FBI sting operation smacks of entrapment? The FBI has a checkered past re this tactic. ABSCAM comes to mind.

Also, seems to me every country has a sophisticated spy apparatus in motion. It’s part of global gamesmanship. Everyone spies on everyone; partially because high tech advances mean money in the bank.
Think of the strategy that goes into a football game.

Project that image onto our current incendiary politicaleconomy on a planetary scale. Ian Flemming couldn’t make this stuff up. Anyone can be a friend; everyone is a potential enemy. Seizmic shifts occur on top as well as underground.
