Tonight kicks off the World Series. The Phillies meet the Yankees at Yankee Stadium, with the game starting at 7:57 (why do they pick such weird times?). The game will be broadcast on Fox (sadly – that means having to listen to Tim McCarver and Joe Buck go on and on. No doubt, they’ll be talking about the Angels or the Red Sox half the time. Ahem. Not my favorite commentators – does it show?). For those interested in the game, c’mon back here, and we can chat between innings!

This should be a great game, too – two former Cleveland Indians pitchers will face off on the mound: CC Sabathia for the Yankees (19-8 regular season record; 3-0 postseason with a 1.19 ERA). At 6’7″, Sabathia is an imposing presence on the mound. Cliff Lee will be pitching for the Phillies (14-13 regular season; 2-0 postseason with a .074 ERA).

The Yankees will seek their revenge against Cliff Lee, who won against the Yankees in their season opener at the brand new stadium. Each team will have its work cut out for it to win against either one of these stellar pitchers. And each team has very good players coming up to the plate against them.

All in all, it should be an exciting series. Let’s hope so, anyway, with good officiating (THAT would be a change), great plays, and no injuries,

Below is a good review of the upcoming game, the pitchers, and the players:

<a href=”” target=”_new” title=”Rosenthal: World Series preview”>Video: Rosenthal: World Series preview</a>

More on Pedro Martinez on Thursday. That will be fun. (The guys above already touched on it – “Who’s Your Daddy” chant by the Yankee fans will be explained.)

First Lady Michelle Obama and Dr. Jill Biden will also be on hand for this game as it will serve to honor returning veterans and their families. Oh, yay – I cannot even get away from the Obamas when watching my diversion from politics! Sheesh. Oh, well – hopefully we won’t miss home runs, or strikeouts, or stolen bases because they are focusing on those two. Just saying.

Believe it or not, this IS an Open Thread, and not just for baseball! What’s on your mind? Rep. Grayson calling Linda Robertson, Bernanke’s adviser, a “whore”? Obama playing as much golf in the first 9 months as Bush did in 34 months? The bombing in Pakistan? Let’s have it!

And if you ARE a baseball fan, hope to see you here later on!

    FYI . . .

NEW YORK (AP) – Yankees manager Joe Girardi benched slumping outfielder Nick Swisher for Game 2 of the World Series on Thursday night and again put Jose Molina behind the plate to catch A.J. Burnett.

Philadelphia also had a different lineup. Raul Ibanez moved from designated hitter to left field and Matt Stairs was the DH.

Jerry Hairston Jr. replaced Swisher in right and was batting seventh. Hairston is 10 for 27 in his career against Phillies starter Pedro Martinez, but hasn’t faced him since 2004. It also was Hairston’s first start in right since July 21.

  • can a Yankee fan say ouch? I didn’t expect that.

  • I’m happy for Cliff Lee, loved him here in Cleveland. Glad to see him pitching so well in the postseason.

I think this series is going at least 6 games. Should be a good series. I think the Yankees take Game 2.

  • Always Learning

The bullpen took us out of the game. Cliff Lee pitched brilliantly and had the Yankee lineup completely off balance. It was up to the bullpen, however, too keep us in the game . . . and they didn’t. Maybe too young and inexperienced?

In regard to Sandy’s comment above, Cliff Lee is an awesome pitcher, BUT he is a arrogant. He came off very smug in his post-game interview with Ken Rosenthal.

Tonight is a must win. Girardi should replace Hinske for Matsui and Gardener for Swisher.

    • Sandy

I am not trying to pick a fight over this world series. If people think Cliff Lee is arrogant, maybe that is what they see. Myself, I am so thrilled that the Phillies acqired a pitcher like Lee, that I may be overlooking his arrogance. I know that I will never see my team win as many WSC as the Yankees, but for them to go to the series 2 years in a row is almost as close for me. If they win 2 years in a row, it will be a little piece of Heaven for me, if not I will still love them. To me, they will still be number 1, as I am sure all fans feel about their favorite team. And that is as it should be.

  • Onofre’s arm

Aww, the Yankees lost, so sad. You would think that a team that pays it’s top three players more than the total payroll that all of the other MLB teams pay for their entire squad, could slip a few million to the officials to sort of, call the game differently. Just tossin’ out possibilities 🙂
    Go Phillies!

  • MrMike

    Go Phils!!!

  • helenk

    It is struttin time.
I hope the series goes all seven games. Both cities need the money and we need some good baseball to take our minds off many things.

    • Sandy

Struttin right there with ya. Love my Phillies, and I don’t think Cliff Lee is arrogant,I think he is awesome! He is a man that loves the game, and it shows.

  • TeakWoodKite

It ain’t over till it’s over Rev. Amy. Make it 41 on shutouts.

  • Karma

Just a question for the Yankees fans.

Do you guys like the new stadium? We really caught first sight of it with the playoffs. It seems to be missing something in the tv translation.

Not sure if that makes sense.

But having watched a lot of Yankee games in the old stadium….I miss it.

  • Mandelay

G’nite and pleasant dreams of a Yankee win!

  • JMM

Bruney’s in, game is over. Night everyone.

    • Yeah – what is wrong with Girardi bringing in Bruney? Even having that guy on the roster still?? Girardi’s misplaced loyalty is his/our undoing. HE keeps sticking with guys who hurt the team. Makes no sense to me.

Okay – I’m signing off, too.

It was fun hanging with y’all, and my hat’s off to the Phillies. They showed up to play, and deserve this win.

  • Mandelay

With Lee’s catch behind his back and the expression on his face, I thought I was watching Major League. This game is bizarre.

  • Always Learning

This doesn’t look good. We can only hope that Cliff Lee’s arm has stiffened up in the long 1/2 inning that he just sat in the dugout. I know . . . wishful thinking.

  • JMM

I was wondering about that, couldn’t really hear. Also wondered if she and Mrs. VP stayed for the game.

4-0, sh*t. Ooops, excuse the profanity Rev.

    • I’m right there with ya, JMM. Like I said earlier, the inconsistency at the plate is hard on everyone – hitters and pitchers alike, for both teams. And it did look like Phil threw a lot of pitches that were strikes but called balls.

Still. 4-0 when Girardi insists upon having people like Swisher in the line-up or without changing up the entire line-up, or SOMETHING to get this team going, is mind boggling.

I know, I know, it’s one game, but the Yanks don’t usually get shut out, and Lee’s cockiness annoys me. He’s pitching great, but he’s being a poor sport abt it. Still, that behind the back catch was pretty sweet.

And honestly, JMM, it’s been so long, I don’t remember the section. It was close to where Big Dave Winfield took his position (LOVE him). 🙂

  • so i got wind from someone who is at yankee stadium that michelle got booed.

i didn’t hear it though when i watched.

    • Karma

Rut roh…I wonder if date night will be in Chicago next time…lol

  • Mandelay

    Too many ****ing walks!!!!!!

  • JMM

Marte is warming up. OH NO!

    • Oh, brother.

You know, the Yanks have been stranding people left and right on base. Tex has come full circle to his non-hitting days from the beginning of the season. What a bad time for him to lose his swing.

  • Always Learning

Did that catch by Cliff Lee seem a little arrogant to anyone??

    • JMM

Yes, I heard he learned that move from The One.

      • ~~JustMe~~

        LOL good teacher ugh!

      • Always Learning

        Hahahaha!! Good one, JMM!

        • JMM

I feel that we bonded this evening Always learning, please call me J.

          • Yes, it seemed arrogant to me, too. Cocky, like his tag out of Posada.

Holy cow – what has happened to Hughes?? He has really been a disappointment this post-season, hasn’t he?

            • JMM

Yeah, I don’t know what happened to him. He was lights out all season. Maybe the pressure of the post season has gotten to him. Marte struck someone out, yippee.

I have to give kudos to my nephew and his fellow bleacher creatures for still keeping up the noise, even in the bad weather and the losing end of the score.

              • Absolutely – good for your nephew and the bleacher creatures (that’s where I sat when I was in seminary. What a fun group of people, even way back then!).

Well, we still have two innings to get back two runs.

                • JMM

Were you in section 39 in the old stadium? That’s where he sat then. They are in section 203 now.

  • ~~JustMe~~

    Go whoever u support lol

Obama unhappy with criticism of his NYC date night

    • ~~JustMe~~

Mrs. Obama, who sat with her husband for the interview in the Oval Office, said marriage doesn’t necessarily become easier just because a couple moves into a big white house with servants and security at every turn.

    • JMM

Ya know, I wouldn’t care what they did for date night, if they paid for the travel, security, etc.

    • Oh, good grief. But thanks for the distraction! 🙂

  • Mandelay

  • JMM

He finally gets a hit and then doesn’t get back to the base on that play.

    • Good grief. We really do not need to be GIVING the Phillies an out, and that’s just what Matsui did. His head just does NOT seem to be in this. He easily could have gotten back to first.

Yeah, Mandelay – they huddle there and get it right right afte rthat horrible 3rd base Ump call on Cano’s check swing. That wasn’t even CLOSE.

Utley – wow – CC has got to stop shaking off Posada and serving up those meatballs to Chase Utley down the middle of the plate! Philly has such great hitters, we don’t need to make it easy on them!

  • Mandelay

What a sight — 6 umps huddled! Ah well, a double play takes our hit away!

  • Mandelay

At last, a lead off man on base! Godzilla, so glad you showed up!

  • Onofre’s arm

Phillies strike first!! Huzzah, and Yankee my wankee.

  • JMM

We’ll come back, next time through the lineup.

  • Mandelay

    I miss hearing Kitty Kaat!
… also stuck with Tim and Joe …
Truth be told, I really miss Mel Allen. How about that!
    Go Yanks!

    • JMM

I LOVE Kitty. I think he retired because his wife was sick and has since passed. I think he’s on MLB now. Mel’s before my time, pretty much.

      • Mandelay

Sorry to hear about Kitty’s wife. That man is just plain swell!!!!!

  • Nice that Chase Utley got two extra pitches. Two of the “balls” were strikes, according to the MLB Gameday. Sheesh.

I always watch the balls and strikes on the Gameday. This umpire seems to be squeezing CC, and giving Lee pitches he isn’t giving CC. This time, it cost the Yanks. Nice homerun and everything – good for the Phillies – but it just gripes me when the umpires aren’t consistent.

  • JMM

Yes, Sterling and Waldman are better than McCarver and Buck because they are at least partial to the Yankees, and I like that. Sterling has a problem calling the plays and can really leave you hanging. “It is high, it is far it is………..caught at the track.”

Matsui is streaky. He’ll go for awhile where he’s see the ball and it is as big as a beachball. Other times, like now, it’s a walnut.

    Phillies just scored, blech.

    • Exactly! That’s a great imitation of Sterling!

Unfortunately, this happens when I watch games on, too – it often hangs up my computer or crashes it, which it just did. Now I have to listen to the Fox guys who are also partial – just not to the Yanks.

  • JMM

RRRA, are you listening to the NY local radio station? If so, you are listening to Suzyn Waldman and Jon Sterling. He sucks.

Matsui continues to look lost at the plate.

    • Yes – that’s to whom I’m listening. Yeah, Sterling seems tow ind around a bit, but honestly, it’s GOTTA be better than Buck and McGarver, isn’t it?

Matsui really does. He stands for the good pitches, and swings at the crap that’s going into the dirt, like something’s backwards for him, you know? He’s completely off.

  • Always Learning

    RRR Amy –

Girardi needs to take Matsui out of the lineup!!

    • JMM

Funny you should say that, I said that at work today. Play Hinske, now that he’s on the roster. Or even Gardner.

      • II was surprised to see that he put Matsui back in the lineup. He is supposed to be the designated HITTER…They have guys they can use. Gardner hit pretty well when he got the chance.

        Go Melk-man!!! Great catch!

  • JMM

Raining again in the BX, but not here in NYC. Hope it doesn’t halt the game.

  • Bill

thanks – with 2 young kids it is hard to catch everything.

    • NP, Bill! 🙂 I hope your kids are watching with you!

JMM – yeah, looks like it’s raining pretty steadily at the stadium. Weird that it’s not raining in the city! The woman on the radio (I tool Amabo’s advice above) said this is the worst possible thing – to have your two aces up with a potential rain delay. Sheesh, no kidding!

Matsui sure isn’t looking comfortable at the plate these days, is he?

  • Bill

who was the national anthem singer?

  • Whew, that was a close one…

  • JMM

RRRA, thanks for the open thread. I’ll be watching tonight and cheering for the Yankees along with you.

  • candymarl

To quote Steve Gilliard FTFY! I’m a native New Yorker BTW.

  • helenk

    To be continued in NY

    GO PHILLIES !!!!!!!!!!!!

    • listing starboard

Ordinarily I don’t watch baseball, I love college football and hoops and the Tour de France–HOWEVER I did watch the game last night and must say Cliff Lee and Chase Utley are HOT! Am looking forward to watching more Phillies!

  • Carlaforhillary

Go Phillies! And on will be a double win for Philly with the Eagles beating the Giants and then beating the Yankees!!!!

The Yanks are about to get Spanked!

    • LOL – yes, that would certainly make a sports fan’s day!! 🙂

Helenk – you are killing me with these Mummers videos! 😀

This is gonna be fun, y’all!

  • Bronwyn’s Harbor

Amy, you’ve turned me into a Yankees fan. Really excited about watching tonight’s game.

  • Katmoon

Ok lost post again, which is 4/5 for the last 5.

    • Dang, Katmoon -I wish I could get those kinds of odds! 😀 I’ll go rescue it. Stand by!

And BH, I am DELIGHTED! You could do far worse than be a Yankees fan! I cannot WAIT for this game!

  • Katmoon

    For the Open Thread portion

Is this a bit over the top, or is it just me? Defacing the flag is now art for health care reform?

One of the 20 finalists in health care video contest run by Barack Obama’s campaign arm features a mural of an America flag splattered with health care graffiti until it’s covered completely by black paint.
In the video – which is accompanied by the sound of a heart monitor pumping and then flat-lining – words such as “pre-existing conditions,” “homeless” and “death panel” ultimately obliterate the flag, which reappears on screen seconds later with the words “Health Will Bring Our Country Back to Life” on the blue field where the 50 stars usually are.
According to the OFA Web site, the 20 finalists will be judged by the public and a panel of experts that includes DNC Chairman Tim Kaine, Obama campaign chief David Plouffe, Rep. Patrick Murphy (D-Pa.), singer and Hollywood stars Rosario Dawson and Dule Hill.

    • helenk

no matter what team you root for this has to be the greatest play in baseball.

  • Amabo Kcarab

Do like my grandmother always did–turn the TV volume down and listen to the radio announcers instead.

    • Since I subscribe to, I can listen to the Yankees’ feed. The only problem is that the radio and the tv broadcast are not in sync. Oh, well – better than listening to those guys go on and on!

And Hokma, no offense to my Phillies Fanatics, but from your keyboard to the Universe! 😉

Speaking of, isn’t it funny that Girardi wears #27 in the hopes of making it so??

  • hokma

The rain is over in New York so it looks like the game will be played and thus will begin the start of the Yankees’ 27th championship.
