Let Them Buy $600 Earrings

finalmichelle-cartoon-earri.jpg

“Let them eat cake!” is the response attributed to Marie-Antoinette, queen consort of Louis XVI, when informed that the poor had no bread.

It seems Michelle Obama has her own twist regarding those whose income is low enough to qualify for the $600 government’s so-called stimulus tax relief package. Criticizing the short term advantage to an audience of mostly African-American women in Michigan she stated, “What can you do with that? Not to be ungrateful or anything. But maybe it pays down a bill, but it doesn’t pay down every bill every month.”

It would have been wise for her to have stopped right there. But she added, “And it may even feel good that first month when you get that check. And then you go out and you buy a pair of earrings.” (Read more at USAToday’s political blog.)

OK, maybe she said it in a joking manner, but humor experts always say to look for serious underlying meaning whenever anyone is trying to be funny. So, regardless of whether one favors this rebate, the joke makes it sound like those with less have no ability to delay gratification. Get a penny, spend a penny.

More compelling news took precedence when the earring comment was uttered, prompting David Gergen to say yesterday on CNN that Obama was lucky on this one. http://transcripts.cnn.com/TRANSCRIPTS/0807/10/acd.01.html

And, I wouldn’t have brought up this seemingly minor gaffe were it not for a pattern I see. The Obamas seem to be out of touch with the rest of us struggling “bitter people,” especially female people.

How much would it cost to buy her a new attitude?

I first saw this linked on MSNBC’s “First Read” and read the comments section with my jaw hanging. Post after post defending the comments and pre-castigating the press for covering it. They even call MSNBC biased against Obama. LOL!

To me, it’s just another example of how out of touch this elitist woman truly is. She has never had to struggle, and has no idea what it’s like to be poor in America, just like her elitist husband. But at least she’s actually black.

The thought of Michelle and Barack in the White House, ordering their servants around makes me ill. I wonder what her “cause” will be as First Lady. Let’s see…”Just Say No” has been taken already. Maybe it will be, “Jewelery for the Poor”? Or, “A pair of earrings in every pot.”?

The “$600-dollar earrings” comment is right up there with a few other Michelle classics, like the time she exhorted a group of women to enter the service sector, and then complained to them about the difficulty of paying for $10,000 (piano or ballet) lessons and summer camp for her kids, and another comment about how difficult it was to keep fresh organic produce around for the kids. She’s been living on the “dole” of the “pay to play” Chicago machine for so long, she has no clue what it’s like for us “bitters.”

Remember Ma Joad in Steinbeck’s Grapes of Wrath before she has to leave her home. She finds a pair of earrings in an old box and they make her forget for just an instant that she’s dirt poor and has nothing. What Michelle said does have meaning and it’s not insignificant-people that live in million dollar homes should never act as if those who are working class do not have a right to nice things. She and her husband are snobs, condescending people who feel good looking down on other people. She needs to remember that she is a corporate lawyer for a healthcare system that needs lawyers like her in denying healthcare for patients. People with real class would never have made a statement such as she did about the $600.00. No one I know that can’t buy gas to get to work is laughing.

Barack Obama’s campaign tossed around nearly $600 at Tiffany’s last month – for a trinket that remains a secret.

Obama’s team tapped his flush campaign bank account to pay the $572.25 tab at the famed jeweler last month, recently released federal fund-raising records show.

When asked about the curious expenditure, campaign spokeswoman Jen Psaki said, “That was mistakenly charged to a campaign credit card and the money has been refunded to the campaign.”

  • DDH

Isn’t elitism an attitude? You do not necesarily have to have money…It’s an attitude…so I thought. It all boils down to what you value, is it jewelery, monetary items, or do you value things not so tangible, like being a good role model to your children or siblings, reading to your children, caring for or helping someone else in any way, being more than polite to someone that is obviously in pain or having a bad day, or do you value the next trend, diamond earrings, gold chains, a beautiful dress, another pair of shoes…VALUES…What are yours? Michelle and Obama both obviously value monetary…And for them and unfortunately many success is expressed with monetary gains, and an image of success. Michelle could have said two weeks of groceries, gas for a month…But instead she and perhaps those she was talking at value earrings more than food or gas…It’s kinda sad…Her and Obama could have bought a home in a less prestigious neighborhood but instead wanted to keep up with the Jones’…And present an image of what they believe is success…Living in a modest home and giving back to your community might have been more convincing…But Michelle and Obama’s values…hmmm…Not everyone wants to be filthy rich some people are actually very happy that their families are healthy, children happy, a roof is over their heads, money in the bank…And either way there is nothing wrong with either but really…

How many fresh lobsters can you get flown in from Maine and delivered straight to your table for $600? Ask Michelle, I’m sure she knows.

How many times can you get a mink stole drycleaned? Ask Michelle, I’m sure she knows.

I’m surprised Michelle didn’t helpfully tell the audience that $600 pays one month’s lease on the Lexus, but what about next month?

My goodness, $600 barely pays for a month of piano and tennis lessons for the girls!

    She feels our pain.

The fraudulent Newspoll has just come up with another poll. Bambi’s 15-point lead widely cheered by the MSM only 2 weeks ago was gone.

    http://www.newsweek.com/id/145737?from=rss

A month after emerging victorious from the bruising Democratic nominating contest, some of Barack Obama’s glow may be fading. In the latest NEWSWEEK Poll, the Illinois senator leads Republican nominee John McCain by just 3 percentage points, 44 percent to 41 percent. The statistical dead heat is a marked change from last month’s NEWSWEEK Poll, where Obama led McCain by 15 points, 51 percent to 36 percent.

Gosh, if newsweek says bambi is tied, factor in another 5 points, McCain must be in the lead. LOL.

Ask Presidents Mondale, Dukakis, and Kerry what a lead in July means.

I would include Gore too, except he actually won and had the election stolen from him. But even he was up by ten points in the Newsweek poll- and two months before the election, not four.

  • Anon22

So then it would be John McCain, who is married to a multi-million dollar heiress, whose children have a $50,000 monthly spending limit on their credit cards, and whose top economic policy adviser thinks Americans are a bunch of headcases who don’t want growth and new jobs enough, who is in touch with the concerns of Americans struggling to pay their bills?

Or are we just process-of-eliminating out all the major candidates as being meaningfully in touch with the lives and concerns of ordinary Americans, almost by definition of their stations in life? And if so, does this comment, by Michelle Obama, really mean much of anything? Sure, the Obamas are very wealthy. But who do you think is more likely to be buying a pair of $600 earrings–Michelle Obama, a working professional who is pulling down several hundred thousand a year, or Cindy McCain, heir to a corporate fortune of an estimated $100 million? Maybe you could say “either,” but if you had to pick one, it would pretty obviously be Mrs. McCain.

Don’t you find it odious when rude children interrupt grown up conversation in a desperate bid to be cute or clever? My advice is to ignore them. This serves two purposes: it isolates them so that the adults can talk in peace, and IT DRIVES THEM CRAZY.

Listen, we all know that BO won nothing and that he was dragged across the finish line by power brokers who mistook him for a cash machine. Remember, he was going to raise $100 million in June. How did that go, by the way?

So Hillbots ignore the children, give the little pests no quarter, even those who give themselves pretend names that they think are clever. Isn’t it so cute when kids mistake a poseur for he genuine article?

No wonder Blacks can’t lift themselves out of their own holes. The first thing that comes to mind is to spend on something frivolous.

At least we know Michelle has her finger on the pulse of the Hip Hop Black Community.

  • Anon22

What are you even talking about? I replied to an idiotic “Michelle Obama is out of touch” post by pointing out that Cindy McCain (and John McCain) are about 100x as out of touch, as measured in wealth. I know John McCain and Phil Gramm think that we’ll create more jobs if Americans just stop whining about how bad the economy is, so I don’t think I need to watch your little propaganda film. I happen to disagree with McCain and Gramm that recent job losses can be attributed to American’s gosh-darned pessimism, and I think Obama has the better plan to limit the spread of damage from the mortgage meltdown by providing direct assistance to all the millions of families struggling to make home payments, and preventing a recurrence of the kind of irresponsible lending and investment practices that have led to the current mess in the financial markets by conditioning access to the Fed’s discount window on the acceptance of a much more robust regulatory regime. We gave deregulation of the financial services industry its chance; it has failed spectacularly. Out-of-touch John McCain and his wealthy investment banking donors’ views to the contrary notwithstanding, it’s time to return effective regulatory control of these vital sectors of the economy to the hands of our independently-governed central bank.

Sorry sweetie but that doesn’t fly. BOBO fed you little BOBOweenies a monster bullshit sandwich which made you all believe he would be the perfect president for 2008. BOBO was different. BOBO was a new kind of politician. But then BOBO went George Bush on us in the space of about a month. That kind of don’t look behind the curtain flim flammery makes BOBO many orders of magnitude worse then McCain as BOBO is now the george bush republican and McCain is still the maverick republican. If you had any intellectual honesty you would drop your support for Jelloman: BOBO the magnificent and fully support Hillary as the only real democrat in this race. Then we can all come together and vote democrat this NOV.

Michelle Obama is out of touch with American values. All Michelle knows is how to receive a Rezko mansion.

  • pm317

You’re right. There is a certain absence of humility and sensitivity to others who are on a different level. Instead of saying govt should do more to help and holding it accountable, she is chiding people who take what little comes their way and she is criticizing them for that little enjoyment. Everything is kind of lopsided. She is in a way ridiculing people for their momentary lapse in whatever she thinks they should be doing — which is what I don’t know.

I would guess we’re talking about Meghan, although the records the media was given access to do not specify. Good for Jimmy McCain that he’s serving in Iraq. I respect his service, and he is certainly in touch with the concerns of his comrades serving overseas, even if his father does think it’s not all that important when they come home, even if it’s in 100 years. I don’t know what your point is about Meghan; the Ivy League thing only bolsters my point that the McCain family as a whole is extremely privileged and out of touch with the concerns of ordinary Americans. It’s not like it’s Meghan’s fault that she was born into wealth and sometimes charges $50,000 on her AmEx in a single month, but it’s certainly a data point on the out-of-touch index.

And that building is loaded with NY lawmakers, including David Patterson, the current Governor and his Dad, Basil Patterson (who I believe is retired from a long political career) as well as other NY lawmakers. It’s a disgrace and an insult to the working poor of Harlem. So what did the building owner get out of this? Any self-respecting NYC landlord does everything he/she can to kick people out of rent stabilized apartments and rent those units at the “fair market value” that has driven out the middle class. So why is this landlord content to give Rangel and the others such deals? It cries out for an investigation! Throw the bums out!

So your point is that Lynn Forester de Rothschild is a hypocrite who selectively deploys the term “elitist” when it suits her? Not knowing the woman myself, that seems awfully harsh, but it does seem to suit the facts of her accusation, as well as the accusations of, for example, the well-off to wealthy segment of American cable news punditocracy that has taken it upon itself to decide what ordinary Americans think.

That’s great about Cindy McCain. I do have some respect for wealthy people who don’t just feel entitled, and who try to spread their money around a little. Of course, her husband’s policies would make it so that people in her income bracket can choose to keep more of their money while middle class families here in America drown under a sea of rising prices, high mortgage payments on suddenly devalued properties, and stagnant wages, but hey, it’s the “attitude” that counts, right?

  • Anon22

No, they’re all privileged, wealthy and fairly out of touch with the lives of ordinary, working Americans. That’s not “wrong” in and of itself. But neither of these candidates and neither of their wives has any special claim to understand the struggles of the working poor or the middle class struggling to make house payments. That’s why we look at the candidates’ policies to figure out what they’ll do for ordinary Americans, rather than some amorphous concept of how “in touch” they are with working/middle class issues. And along that crucial policy dimension, Obama is just blowing McCain out of the water in terms of addressing the problems confronting working families in these perilous economic times.

McCain wants to extend the Bush tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans, at a time when we should be asking the most fortunate among us to shoulder a a larger share of the burden in order to get us through this rough patch. Obama is going to work to get universal health insurance legislation passed, so that working Americans don’t have to live in fear of a loved one’s sudden illness throwing the family’s finances into flux. McCain thinks working Americans can do without health insurance, and thinks fixes around the margins of the health care system are all that’s needed. McCain is committed to keeping troops in Iraq for the next eight years at the very least, draining the federal budget for tax relief and entitlement expansions in order to prolong a wasteful and unnecessary occupation. And on and on. On policy, where it counts, John McCain is out of touch with Americans’ lives and concerns, while Barack Obama is offering specific proposals to make things better for the middle and working classes.

  • Penny Pritzker

Again, making serious accusations based on zero fact. Princeton in 1983 had EEOC regulations in place. All African-American applicants (regardless of income bracket) were considered under a different set of standards than white applicants. Regardless of whether she would have got in without them, she benefited from their existence – just as though I may have been able to outrace you, but having a fifty-yard start still gives me an advantage.

Looking at the picture makes me remember the story of Michelle getting a make over. I wondered why the Obama campaign believes that Michelle needs a makeover? Is it that the real Michelle is not good enough? Is it if the people knew who she is they would not want her as first lady? Do they really think that all it takes to change a person is a make over? Do they think that the people can be fooled that easily, and will not be able to see or forget who the real Michelle is?

And our new governor (Thanks Spitz) David Patterson passed a law that makes displaying a noose a felony punishable by 4 years in prison based on the fallacious charges of a Columbia professor who claimed a noose was hung on her door only to admit, weeks later, that she had done it herself.

illuminating a lot of unreported black reaction to His Snottiness, but you DO know he’s a convicted felon, conman, thief and assaulter, right?

Personally I think of Manning as a raving lunatic who often speaks the truth as often happens with the village madman.

The sad thing is that this remark, which vividly demonstrates how out of touch the Obamas are with the average American, got lost in all the pontificating about Jesse Jackson going knife-happy, and Phil Gramm’s “whiners” gaffe.

And the NY Times had a long article today about John McCain’s possible ineligibility to run for POTUS, but mentioned nothing about the similar controversy over the circumstances of Obama’s birth.

Further proof of the MSM’s get-Obama-elected agenda.

Now that I am thinking about it. What are the FEC rules for when the camera is on the 49 car …with BO’s political logo on it? Does McCain get “equal” time? I hope it is one of the go home cars and fails to quailify….No offense to Kenny because he is a very decent man.

BO wants to sponsor a race car and can’t afford to pay for Denver?

Now if Obama sponsored a team that had a AA driving the car I would be all for it. BUT NO NO NO! NOT gonna do it.

    It is all about ME!

Since its birth in 1947, NASCAR has had two African American drivers, of whom one, Bill Lester, is the only black racing in a NASCAR series today. The sport has had no female drivers. Nor does a search of its records of major contests turn up any names that sound Latino or Asian.

NASCAR’s first African American driver was Wendell Scott, who raced from 1961 to 1972 in the sanctioning body’s Grand National Division, precursor to NASCAR’s Winston Cup Series, according to an April 2004 report on blacks in auto racing, published by Black Enterprise magazine.

A search through NASCAR’s records confirms that report. Scott won the only race of his career in 1964 in NASCAR’s third event of that year on a dirt track in Jacksonville, Fla. He finished ahead of Buck Baker, thus becoming the first and only African American ever to win a major NASCAR race.

It is about empathy. When Michelle Obama makes stupid comments like $600 won’t help anything, it demonstrates how little she understands what it is like to need $600 desperately. I don’t know anyone buying earrings or any such thing with that money.

So many people are hurting that this is going for food, gas and trying to catch up on bills. And no it won’t keep the wolf off the porch forever, but it will help get through the summer. God knows what is going to happen this winter when people cannot buy propane or food.

Obama shows that she does not know what it is like to do without, and she does not care what others are going through. Cindy McCain has the good sense to keep her mouth shut and not criticize those who are hurting.

Ted
There are two types of conversations that take place here.
The first types of comments come from concerned citizens that place country before party and have a long history of voting for what’s right for this country
The second group are those that have little knowledge of history or foreign policy and live in the present. They are constantly fed talking points which they pass on to others believing that they are clever.
As Al Gore said in his book ‘An Assault on Reason’
The majority of people simply receive information instead of seeking out information for critical analysis.
From what I have seen from your intellectually challenged posts is that you are on the receiving end of gaining knowledge which controls your ability to give deep constructive and awe inspiring opinions.

Obama trolls, please stop comparing Cindy McCain to Michelle Obama. Michelle’s not in the same league.

“But beyond the designer clothing and the perfect blond hair is a Cindy McCain few have ever seen, one who contrasts sharply with the smiling, glossy image she projects alongside the senator on the campaign trail.

This Cindy McCain harbors a ruggedness and fearlessness befitting her war-hero husband.

She has waded through minefields in Cambodia. Slept out in the bush in tents in Angola. Comforted children under the broiling sun in Morocco.

But the 53-year-old’s extensive charity work has been largely overlooked.

Instead, the focus has tended to be on her privileged upbringing as the heiress of a successful Phoenix beer distribution business and her highly publicized addiction to painkillers in the early 1990s.

But friends and others who have traveled with her on mission trips say her commitment to humanitarian work is one of her most defining characteristics. They also expect that to become a major part of her work as first lady, should John McCain win in November.

“The thing that differentiates Cindy and why I think she will make an excellent first lady is that she has this true connection with the underserved,” said Vonnie Wray, the development director at Operation Smile who has accompanied Cindy on missions to Morocco, India and Vietnam.

    Shunning the spotlight

Cindy declined to be interviewed for this article. Friends say the reserved mother of four became more private after her three-year addiction to Percocet and Vicodin became public in 1994. She had taken the pills from the American Voluntary Medical Team, a humanitarian organization she founded to provide care to victims of war and natural disasters. She avoided prosecution by entering a federal diversion program.

“She was very unhappy that people were talking about her. She was probably more guarded after that,” said longtime friend Betsey Bayless, a former Arizona secretary of state and current chief executive of Maricopa Integrated Health System.

Friends also say that Cindy, unlike her media-savvy husband, dislikes interviews and distrusts the media. After initially agreeing to a telephone interview for this story, she canceled, saying through her aide that she felt betrayed by the celebrity television program Access Hollywood. The program aired a two-part segment this month that focused largely on Cindy’s reaction to her addiction and to her husband’s association with a female lobbyist.

Maintaining the same level of privacy would be difficult if Cindy becomes first lady, but friends don’t expect her to change.

“It’s pretty hard to remain a private person as first lady, but if anyone can pull that off, Cindy can,” said longtime friend Peggy Rubach, a former mayor of Mesa.

    The private life

Cindy Lou Hensley McCain grew up in a sprawling north-central Phoenix mansion, serves as chairwoman of her family’s business and has traveled the world on humanitarian missions. Yet friends describe her as loyal and devoted, fun and adventurous. She likes concerts – she flew to London for the weekend to catch the reunion concert of Eric Clapton and Cream – and she drives high-performance sports cars for fun.

Longtime friend Sharon Harper said that when she lost her Yorkshire terrier in March, Cindy drove around North Central Avenue three afternoons in a row yelling, “Mocha, Mocha,” from her convertible.

The dog, a gift from Cindy to Harper, was never found.

Harper said Cindy is even more doting with the couple’s four children.

“She has a wonderful family life. She’s a very loving mother and devoted to her children,” said Harper, the head of a real-estate development company.

Still, Cindy has said that she had sometimes felt like a single mother because her husband was away so much. He was elected to Congress in 1982 and has spent much of his time since then in Washington.

But friends say the two are close.

“My observation is that she and John McCain are very much ballast for each other,” said former Arizona Superintendent of Instruction Lisa Graham Keegan, a friend and one of John’s education advisers.

Still, said Keegan, “There are not a lot of public displays of affection” between them.

    Humanitarian aid

Cindy’s humanitarian work focuses mainly on children and health care in developing countries.

Friends say her causes are an extension of her work as a special-needs teacher at Agua Fria High School. In 2000, Cindy’s assistant contacted the offices of Operation Smile in Norfolk, Va. Cindy wanted to go on one of the organization’s medical missions to a developing country to treat children with cleft lips and cleft palates.

The organization’s officials were thrilled. They knew about Cindy’s history of helping children in developing countries. They also knew that in 1993, she and her husband had adopted a child with a cleft palate from Mother Teresa’s orphanage in Bangladesh.

Having someone of Cindy’s stature on a mission could elevate Operation Smile’s profile, bringing in more donations.

But privately, Operation Smile officials worried that the senator’s wife might expect VIP treatment, making the trip more difficult.

They were surprised not only at how resilient Cindy turned out to be but that she prefers the more difficult journeys.

    The first trip

On her first trip in March 2001, Cindy volunteered to greet children arriving at a hospital on the dusty outskirts of Tangier, Morocco. Wray remembers the children looking like “something out of Lawrence of Arabia” riding on camels. She also remembers how Cindy, a ball cap on her head, stood in the baking sun for hours, handing numbers to children so they could be screened.

Wray tried to relieve Cindy four or five times, but Cindy kept saying, “I’m fine. I’m fine.”

“I could not get her out,” Wray said. “She was very low maintenance.”

Kathy Magee, the co-founder of Operation Smile, said Cindy’s toughness isn’t all that impressed her.

Last June, Cindy participated in an Operation Smile mission to Boa Loc, Vietnam, her second trip to Vietnam on an Operation Smile mission. The first was to DaNang in 2002.

Magee was struck by the special connection Cindy seemed to have with the people of Vietnam, where her husband was held as a prisoner of war for more than five years after his plane was shot down over Hanoi during the war.

“They feel a need to give back in that country,” Magee said.

    On the campaign trail

In March 2007, Cindy had to cut a trip short to Tanzania for CARE, the global poverty-fighting organization, because her husband was getting ready to declare his candidacy.

And in September she took a leave from CARE’s board.

But she still finds time for charity work.

Last month, after John had clinched enough delegates to win the Republican nomination, Cindy squeezed in a trip to Kosovo to address land mines.

On the campaign trail, Cindy doesn’t try to hog the spotlight, though she seems increasingly comfortable in it. Unlike her husband, she rarely mingles with the media.

When she addresses crowds, she is short and to the point. She often introduces her husband at town-hall meetings and rallies. For the most part, she focuses on John as a husband and a father. She often reminds the audience that two of their sons are following in the family’s long military tradition. John himself never brings up their service in public settings.

“Two of our young boys are active-duty military,” Cindy said to cheers and applause at a recent rally in Prescott. “They aspire to do a job that is incredible only because they’ve had such a great example in their father. … He has been a great inspiration to our children – Meghan, Jack, Jimmy and Bridget – and he has been a marvelous inspiration and a good example for all children in the state of Arizona and our nation. That’s the kind of president that I want, and that’s the kind of president I hope you want.”

    Clearing mines

Princess Diana helped increase awareness of the Halo Trust, a British organization that works to clear mines in war-ravaged countries. Cindy is following in her footsteps.

On a trip to Angola in 2005, Cindy visited eight to 10 sites where Halo workers were removing mines left over from the civil war.

It was a difficult trip that involved flying on a United Nations turbo-prop plane “into a dusty air strip in the middle of nowhere” and then traveling for three days in a Land Rover and sleeping in tents, said Nigel Robinson, a former Halo official who accompanied Cindy.

As one of six board members, Cindy’s job is to observe mine-clearing missions and understand the issues. But she is not afraid to do more.

“Some of our visitors will stand at the back of the minefield and not want to go in. She will go don a flak jacket and put on a clear plastic visor and walk right up to where people are clearing mines,” Robinson said.

“It’s not dangerous,” he said. “But there is a certain level of risk.”

On another Halo trip to Cambodia, Cindy traveled with a group of women from Freedom Fields USA, a non-profit group based in Carmel, Calif., that raises money for mine removal.

The women visited a minefield near the border of Thailand. It was littered with mines planted by the Vietnamese in the 1970s to keep the Khmer Rouge from crossing back into Cambodia.

The women were each given the chance to destroy a land mine, which involved placing an explosive charge next to the mine and detonating it. Accidentally stepping on a mine is unlikely, but setting one off would be strong enough to blow someone’s leg off just below the knee.

“One of them didn’t want to do it,” Robinson said. “The others were very nervous, visibly. They asked hundreds of questions. They were clearly very apprehensive.”

All except Cindy, who had detonated mines several times before.

“I do remember her sharing her experiences and reassuring them that it was possible and safe,” Robinson said.

    Defining her role

The first lady is known as the unofficial hostess of the White House. But first ladies are free to define the role as they wish.

“The job is pretty much up to the woman who holds it,” said Betty Caroli, author of the book First Ladies.

Every first lady since 1961 has taken on some sort of cause, from volunteerism to equal rights. Some have taken a more active role than others. Rosalynn Carter sat in on cabinet meetings and traveled as a diplomat to Latin America. Hillary Clinton headed her husband’s task force to create a universal health-care plan.

These women used “all of the available means of persuasion to talk about a cause and promote it,” said communications professor Myra Gutin, author of The President’s Partner, The First Lady in the Twentieth Century.

Most friends and experts see Cindy leaning more toward traditional first ladies like Laura Bush.

Cindy, they say, would rather be traveling to some far-flung country on behalf of one humanitarian cause or another. That is the Cindy they expect to show up at the White House.

“I think Cindy would adopt the whole world if she could,” friend Peggy Rubach said.”

Yes, Barack, unbeknownst to you, we still maintain the dignity you say we’ve lost.

  • C.S.

So “the Ivy League thing only bolsters my point that the McCain family as a whole is extremely privileged and out of touch with the concerns of ordinary Americans.” doesn’t apply to Barack Obama’s elitist father who not only attended college in Hawaii on a student visa but got his Ph.D. from Harvard, making son Barack a legacy like George W. Bush.

Or Barack’s attending that elitist private school in Hawaii after he returned from Indonesia where his stepfather was a government official. And there’s always that Ph.D. his “poor single mother on food stamps” got, her travel to exotic lands…one could go on and on but I think the double standard of judging Mrs. McCain, without acknowledging her charity work, is quite evident by now.

Yes, it was. Clinton worked to try to make it better for women in Wal Mart stores, and did some good. At the time, she really had to buck the good ‘ol boy group, which was a major challenge. They thought she was just going to sit around and look pretty, making it so they could get favors from Bill. Little did they know she would teach them a thing or two about compassion and decency!

I live here in Arkansas, and was an adult at the time so remember it well.

FYI, most historians believe that Marie Antoinette never said that line. Also, the word “cake” referred to the crumbs and bits left in the pan after freshly baked bread was removed from the pan, not the dessert we eat today, so your analogy doesn’t really work.

    What?

Bringing up ob’s work for REZKO makes HER racist?

elizabeth, are you wearing a clown suit?

The one who wasn’t “called on it” was ob – who lied through his teeth.

He will face “operation board games” and all his dirty work in time, I guarantee it.

For the last time, she is not racist for bringing up OBAMA’s backing of a slum lord.

  • No Fraud, NoBama

Everyone gets the analogy. Regardless of the historical accuracy of the quote, the out-of-touch-with-the-little-guy attitude resonates.

At Chicago fund-raiser for Obama, a cussing Bernie Mac jokes about “hoes.”

    http://blogs.suntimes.com/sweet/2008/07/at_chicago_fundraiser_for_obam.html

Four years of jokes about “hoes” and major policy discussions about which RAP singer should be on Obama’s iPod….

Is this what Americans believe in in their best interests? Isn’t this what we’ve suffered for the past 8 years, a developmentally immature adolescent?

Thank you for re-stating this. The fact is in Chicago BOTH Obamas were in a position to really HELP the African American Community with decent housing, affordable health care, etc…. Instead they used their positions for their own power and pocketbook; screwing over the people they supposedly serve. Belonging to a Church that fosters hatred and victimhood. USERS! And they had the GALL- the fu@king GALL- to call Bill and Hillary racists.

  • Jaxxy

I’ll attribute this addition to another blogger who said that some of these obamabots are what Lenin called “useful idiots.”

  • Sam Copeland

Michelle Obama’s comments are clearly racist and imply that African Americans and poor people have no self-control and waste their money on trinkets.

Obama has no choice but to deny what she said, divorce her, and throw her under the bus.

But then again, he can no more renounce the woman of his children than the pastor he has known for 20 years, who brought him to Christ, and baptized his children, now can he?

  • http://IthinkIfeel... Pat Racimora

I know the history–and there is another take on it, namely that bread and cake cost the same back then and cake had eggs in it which made it healthier than bread. However, what difference would that make if people could afford neither?

Also, note that I was careful to say “attributed to” also.

The main point is that the line was too good to not use for the purpose at hand.

Pat, you really are sharp in your ability to depict the character of people with your cartoons. In this case, an angry, arrogant, hateful woman unable to empathize with plight of the poor whom she views as incapable of restraint and unable to use good judgment. Now, if she had received $600, I’m sure she would have rushed out to buy a new iPhone or a diamond necklace, so naturally, she projects her own proclivities to splurge onto struggling poor people. Why does she not imagine they might instead go out and buy a pair of shoes for one of their children who has no shoes? She really needs to take a look at herself, or maybe at one of your great cartoons to see her self as others see her. I love your cartoons and your always right-on observations. Keep them coming! It is unfortunate, however, that so often people leaving comments get off-topic and into petty bickering and name calling. Let’s keep the heat on the Obamas where it belongs.

The spark that led to the french revolution was a huge spike in bread prices. When told that the poor people could no longer afford bread, the Queen said, “Let them eat cake (the crumbs left behind in the pan).” In other words, eat the leftovers. Sorry, but your analogy is incorrect.

The only Marie Antoinette-Michelle Obama analogy that (might) fit here is that both were falsely attacked for not caring for the poor. Historians believe that Marie Antoinette did a lot of work for the poor through private charities and that work never became public. That said, Marie Antoinette did live ridiculously extravagant lifestyle.

I really liked your cartoons earlier in the campaign before you began attacking Michelle Obama. The media are doing the same thing to her that they did to Hillary in the 1990s. Don’t you see that?

I am really not good at blogging, shit. I am always posting on the wrong comments, wright, I know. But I am learning. I read fast; type slow…

Would you like to actually discuss the elitist comment by Mrs. Obama or throw race-bating bombs like a typical vacuous liberal coward?

  • matt

Nowhere in the quotations from Michelle Obama did she make reference to $600 earrings. She made reference to using a $600 check to pay down bills and then she added, “And it may even feel good that first month when you get that check. And then you go out and you buy a pair of earrings.” The clear implication is that you would buy a pair of earrings with some of the money leftover and not with the whole $600.
I do find it interesting though, that one of the candidate’s wife said on television that the only way to travel around arizona is in a private jet, but she is not the elitist. no, it’s the one that shops at target for clothes for her kids. that one is the elitist. jeez. it’s a good thing michelle obama didn’t inherit a king’s fortune and steal BO away from his first wife. you guys wouldn’t know what to say about her.

My family makes a lot less money than the Obamas, but we made too much to get the rebate. How in the world did the Obamas get the rebate. If my family made too much, the Obamas certainly did as well. Where did her rebate check come from? Did she really get one? Or, like everything else the Obamas do, is it a complete smoke screen? I want to see a photocopy of their rebate check. No way did they get one.
