“Zanesville – Thanks, But No Thanks”

That’s the bottom line of the very good piece by Mayfill Fowler in Huffington Post Thursday, “Zanesville On Obama’s Faith-Based Initiatives: Thanks But No Thanks.” You may recall that Ms. Fowler is the journalist who exposed Obama’s “bitter, clingy, church-y, gun-y” video a few months back. Interestingly, she is (or was – I don’t know where she stands now), an Obama supporter. But her piece is quite interesting in that, for the most part, the church organizations with which she met in Zanesville aren’t really so keen on getting federal funding, never mind increased federal funding a la Obama’s “New and Improved” Faith Initiatives Plan, a plan that would also add more requirements, if Obama gets his way.

Why Obama picked Zanesville in the first place is not clear to me. It would seem it isn’t all that clear to Ms. Fowler, either:

After spending the better part of a day talking to people there — at seven downtown churches, another over the Muskingum River, and at Eastside itself — I find little interest in Obama’s plan. Indeed, the lack of enthusiasm for the plan among these churchgoers matches the lack of enthusiasm it has generated among secular Democrats.

Why the nonchalance?

“We don’t want any strings attached to help from Washington,” says Scott Johnston, the pastor of Market Street Baptist Church, founded “as a statement against slavery” in 1837.

Now, see, that makes sense to me.

If you are getting federal monies, you will have a set of parameters on how the money can be used, and how that use has to be reported. And while the so-called Faith Initiatives are supposed to be used for Social Services, it seems to me that is a line easily blurred. Which is part of the problem when government and religion try to mix in the first place.

So, Obama was coming to Zanesville to deliver his big ol’ “Come to Jesus though the Federal Government” meeting, and Rev. Johnston was one of the people to meet him. His impression?

“Very nice, very personable, very much a politician. His body language–he knows how to lean into a person when listening–he has been to school! He makes good eye contact! Very much a politician.”

Very much a politician? Obama?? I thought he ran on a platform of being the anti-politician?! Hmmm. Apparently, Rev. Johnston didn’t get the memo. But I digress.

Rev. Johnston was not the only one who met with Obama:

I ask him what the four representatives of Zanesville told Obama. “We are a community that takes care of our own,” the United Way lady told him. The old guy didn’t say much, the mayor talked money and Johnston pressed for more help for the elderly — specifically, a change in the privacy laws so that outsiders can act as advocates for old people who don’t have any family.

But Johnston is dubious about Obama’s plans and about the man himself. “There are more strings attached under his program than under Bush’s. You can hire a person who agrees with your theology, under Bush. With Obama, you’re getting more government involvement — we don’t need that.”

Right. So, not only has Obama embraced a BAD Bush policy, but he has found a way to make it even more insidious. I guess you have to give it to him on THAT score, but why would he take an already bad idea, and make it worse? WHO is behind this expansion anyway? Now, that’s a question to which I would sure like an answer…

Mayhill Fowler also interviewed a volunteer, Mary White, who works with one of the local ministries, Eastside Ministries. She seemed to have some nice things to say about Obama in the,”If you can’t say something nice, don’t say anything at all” vein. Ms. Fowler got the definite impression that Ms. White did not support Mr. Obama, but wasn’t going to say anything bad about him personally. But, when asked about this program specifically, Ms. Fowler wrote:

White is less sanguine about Obama’s proposal for federal funding of faith-based ministries like Eastside. “Every aspect of us has some aspect of faith built into it,” she says. She gestures towards the second floor. “Our youth program has a Bible Club.” She points out the food pantry. “Each order of food has a prayer in it.” She goes further. “People come to us to pray with them. You see we have a chapel there. In emergency situations, and we are often helping people in emergencies, people want prayer. So we have to be very careful in the money we take. It’s very important to us, it’s very important to the individuals who fund us, that we be able to minister with faith.”

Interestingly, the ministry for which Ms. White volunteers prefers to maintain the separation between Church and State. It’s not the only one:

Eastside, the site of Senator Obama’s proposal to fund faith-based ministries, has no intention of applying for or accepting tax-payer dollars. Eastside is not even tied to any one particular branch of the Christian faith. For the most part, Zanesville’s downtown churches share ecumenical Eastside’s disposition. (the) secretary Judy explains that Grace United Methodist Church has no need for government funds. Grace United used to give food to the pantry at Eastside but winter weather had proved problematic, and so they had quit. Next door Jane, the secretary at St. James Episcopal, is equally emphatic that her church is not interested in federal monies. The diocese gives them the wherewithal for the free dinner they host the last Saturday of every month. Everything else the church members raise themselves and give to Eastside.

With one exception, it seemed that most of the folks in Zanesville were none-too-thrilled with this whole program. Ms. Fowler discovered:

In fact, faith-based social programs in Zanesville are a closed loop. The mainstream churches give their money to Eastside and rely on Eastside to do the work; Eastside eschews federal funding. Moreover, none of the churches with whose members I speak are interested in expanding into the kind of ambitious social programs, in education for example, that Senator Obama mentioned in his speech.

The one exception to this general feeling of unease regarding Obama’s plan was at the Central Presbyterian church:

Mary Perone, director of outreach, tells me that “if he [Obama] can do it, it would be fantastic.” She’s all in favor of federal grant money for her faith-based outreach. She’d like to start a parish nurse program and do more with adult literacy. But the first thing she says, when we each take a folding chair at a long dining table in the low-ceilinged basement, is critical of Obama’s visit to Zanesville. “He really didn’t get to meet the people,” this Perone says. “The people he got to meet were on his level — not the common people — he didn’t touch base with them.” She is disapproving. “They’re really hurting, and they don’t think people listen.”

I would have to agree with her on that last point – Obama does NOT listen to the people, to the common person. Why he is not advocating for the abandonment of a horrible Bush policy move, one that clearly conflicts with the Separation of Church and State but seeks to EMBRACE it, and EXPAND it, even, is beyond me. Besides the obvious pandering to the Religious Right, that is. To do so has far less to do with what the person on the street cares about most, and far more to do with Obama’s own political aspirations. He cares about getting votes, not about the wise stewardship of tax payers money. He cares more about appearance, going to a small town in OH, a state he lost, to speak in front of the exact same kind of people he denigrated just a few months ago at a San Francisco fundraiser to tout a program a vast majority of Progressives, myself included, find to be a complete affront to the Constitution. He calls himself a Constitutional Scholar, yet seems to be completely unaware of the contents of the Constitution! I know I have said it before, I just cannot quite get over it. And in this case, it is a very big deal indeed. Not only is it a direct assault on an incredibly important distinction in our country, one with tremendous history behind it, but it uses money from the people. The bottom line is that people are taxed and have their money go to support religious organizations they may not support, to forms of Christianity or other religious traditions that are anathema to them. Heck, one can see that even Obama recognizes that there is not one way of thinking or believing when he said in 2006,

“Even if we did have only Christians in our midst, if we expelled every non-Christian from the United States of America, whose Christianity would we teach in the schools?” Obama said. “Would we go with James Dobson’s or Al Sharpton’s?”

LINK
So, at some point he got it. But he has since lost it. This whole notion was dangerous when Bush proposed it, and it is even more dangerous now, when a so-called Democrat, a so-called Constitutional scholar, attempts tho tear down the Separation of Church and State.

And this is just another excellent reason that he should not be the Democratic nominee. Bush was bad enough. A Bush Lite may be even worse…

  • http://paganpower.wordpress.com/ PaganPower

This pandering is indeed obnoxious and so blatantly obvious. Bush Lite is exactly the right definition for it.

a la Obama’s “New and Improved” Faith Initiatives Plan, a plan that would also add more requirements, if Obama gets his way.

I suspect the amount given are higher with Oabams plan.

Why he is not advocating for the abandonment of a horrible Bush policy move, one that clearly conflicts with the Separation of Church and State but seeks to EMBRACE it, and EXPAND it, even, is beyond me

A month ago, TUCC received 1,000,000 with Obamas help.
This is why he embraces this. He has plans to give to the Black Liberation Theology churches at taxpayer expense. You can google tucc recieves 1 million dollar grant.

Who’s behind it (the program expansion)? Probably Rev Wright. The part of this story I like the best is the indication that the lines are blurred as to where the money can go. Into church leaders pockets? Kickbacks?

    • Joe

It’s just all a big shell game, Chicago style. Michelle needs new earrings.

    • http://uppitywoman08.wordpress.com uppitywoman08

      Post Racial candidate. Indeed.

  • Lou

TUCC church and REV WRIGHT received a $1,000,000 grant through this government program with the help of Obama. Google it. It happened a month ago. This is why Obama wants this Law. The blurred lines in this law is an invitation to pocket some and take kickbacks all at taxpayers expense.

    • Ai1een

This is probably “payoff” money for Wright to keep his mouth shut on all that he knows about Obama. I’m sure he’s making the same sort of backroom deals with Rezko (through Rezko’s wife) for him to keep his mouth shut as well. At some point, it’s all going to unravel – it’s only a matter of time – everyone high up in Chicago knows Obama is dirty as _ell.

    • StrawberrybitesBarky

WHAT?! OK Screw this shit. Here I am pushing my kids to get law and medical degrees and racking up huge schools loans, for what? Wright just got how much? A million bucks? Enough is enough, I’m just gonna’ get me one of those online reverand certificates, rent a run down store front in a bad part of town and start ‘preaching’. Hey Barky, slide some of that cash my way, will ya dude?

    • OBSP

      What? Are you sure?

I have called him Bush Lite since last fall. Now, we have proof positiva.

I have nevered mentioned my relationships on this site, but F it now. In a meeting of Chicago Hillary supporters last November, Alice Palmer said to compare BO to W. No on listen to her then hopefully one of the 527 will do it now.

He is currently the leader of the largest mosque in the USA. His private meeting with Obama took place on May 14 2008, minutes after Obama told a reporter at an auto plant “Not now Sweetie.” According to the Mosque’s website the Iman gave Obama a copy of his latest book, Crescent America.

His initiatives are a bone to the AA churches, which absolutely will take the money into their coffers. And just try to enforce Federal guidelines. *hahaha

It’s a regressive idea that has no place in the Democratic Party platform.

    • Jack

The faith-based initiative is the same as it is for Bush, a way to buy support from church leaders with promises of future money, from which, naturally, the leader, family and friend will draw “salaries.”

  • osbama

    Off topic.
Obama Campaign Still Not Providing Donor Information To Watchdog Groups

The Obama campaign, on the other hand, has failed to respond to ongoing requests by the watchdog groups including the June 25th joint letter. The Obama campaign did respond earlier this week to a New York Times request to publish an updated list of their “bundlers” (after six months of refusing to update the list), but as the Center pointed out the list does not provide information on the employers, occupations, and addresses of the bundlers. Further concern stems from the lack of reporting concerning the actual amounts raised by these bundlers. This presents a problem in tracking the payback as Obamas list of bundlers includes numerous common names such as Lisa Davis.

The watchdog groups have reason to be concerned about Obama’s bundlers as they include some of the nations most powerful executives such as Frank Clark, the CEO of ComEd, and Robert Wolf the CEO of UBS Americas. Both donors had raised over $200,000 each for the Obama campaign as of last November. Also included are bundlers such as like Jim and Paula Crown, of Chicago’s Crown Family; whose sister sits on the Board of Directors of Northern Trust. Dozens of Obama bundlers whose employment information was released in November are corporate attorneys or executives at investment banks such as Goldman Sachs, Lehman, Citigroup, and others.

      Did you say Davis?

Hmmm, that’s a common name in Barry D’s circle of influence.

Here are the instructions on how to change a representative republic into a one party leninist state that only believe could believe in. It’s really simple, mix until done a little voter fraud from groups like ACORN that flies under the radar with changes to the structure of local government as is most blatantly being attempted in Michigan until only your party is in control of the remaining institutions. Anyone left with any doubt on what Obama means by changing the electoral map? His darts form left to right, flying over center, and landing where nobody knows is the distraction.

I am a Hoosier, right next door in Indiana. Hillary won here by we will go for John McCain in the GE

Obama campaign called me yesterday to invite me to the grand opening of the office in Ft Wayne. I said well I’m not supporting or voting for him. When she asked why I said lots of reasons but the biggest one is I’m not voting for someone who sat in a racist, American hating church for 20 years. She said well he denounced the church, Wright and doesn’t attend anymore. I said well he should have done that 20 years ago!!

It’s nice to see Zanesville in the headlines after all these years.
Eastern Ohio is right in the middle of Bitter country.
The town next door is New Concord where Muskingum College is and where John Glenn went to college before becoming an astronaut.
I also had the privilege to go to that college and often hung out in Zanesville.

The people in that region of the America are considered Reagan/Clinton democrats who will vote overwhelmingly for our Hero John McCain this fall

    • http://www.rabblerouserruminations.blogspot.com/ Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy

I figured that was exactly why Obama went there for his big announcement. I mean, where better to do it than a bunch of bitter religious yahoos who would surely JUMP at the chance to get their hands on some guv-mint money, right?? If you read the article, it is clear that his advance people got a whole bunch of info on the people they wanted to make sure they were there (including one minister’s numbers – all of them, which seemed to surprise him some. Hmmm – no WONDER Obama wants the “new and improved” FISA!!). Makes me wonder why they did not get that the people there don’t WANT to get involved with this program?? Telling. Very telling.

And thanks for the info abt Zanesville, Glenn, and Muskingum College!

      • Seattle Moss

        Here’s a little known fact.
John Glenn went to school with my father at Muskingum. As we all know he became the first man in space.
What people don’t know is that he could barely drive a car.
In fact he drove his 57 Chevy right into the lake.

        We love John Glenn!!

I am so happy for you. Zanesville. You matter Seattle, and that is so cool. We are lucky to have this place “here” to learn a discern for ourselves.

There are two types of people in this world. Those that simply receive information usually by the TV or more recently through cult worship.
The other type of person seeks out information from all sources and are constantly discerning and modifying there views based on conditions and how they change through time.
The Obamabots are told what to say and are attempting to force those views onto us.
They have hit a brick wall called reality thinking!

    • wac for hillary

Zanesville is a really nice city to visit. I stopped there on my way back to D.C. from Indianapolis (a long time ago). I loved the Zane Grey Museum, the Y bridge, and a really neat store (can’t remember the name) that sold Christmas stuff year round. The people were super friendly.

I’m glad to see that they aren’t buying the Obama BS.

      • Mr. X

        More from that Newsweek poll:

In the new poll, McCain leads Obama among independents 41 percent to 34 percent, with 25 percent favoring neither candidate. In June’s NEWSWEEK Poll, Obama bested McCain among independent voters, 48 percent to 36 percent.

X they had him ahead 15 points before somebody exposed that they polled mostly democrats.

I think that’s exactly what went on, but Newsweek is gonna make Obama take the heat rather than admit it.

I’m from Ohio, not too far from Zanesville. Let me tell you, his visit was just pandering. As a Christian, we do not want the government in helping us with our programs. We have done fine without them and will continue to do so. However, we know that Obama wants to help Wright and Pfleger, and whatever other religion he chooses to help, not us. As a christian, I voted for Hillary here in our primaries. I’m an independant. I also knew McCain had it sewed up here on the Republican side and so we didn’t want Obama anywhere near the white house. We could settle for a McCain or Hillary in the white house. But now, for me, it’s McCain all the way. He does govern down the middle, which is the way it should be. It should never be about right or left, but for the people and so us christians are quite content to have it that way. I truly believe that the safety of our country trumps all parties and so I will proudly vote for McCain. I do not trust Obama.

I feel that it is important to post the following from Daily Koz regarding Snow….

I’m sorry but it just sickens me to read diary after diary of silly, bleeding-heart little condolensces to Snow and his family.

I swear some of you weak-kneed progessive brethren of mine have no clue about the vicious nature of the ideological battle we are in. When a bad guy dies, we should rejoice, not sing his praises of wish him anything by scorn.

There is a fundamental reason why the progress/liberal movement is so often impotent in delivering effective blows to the right-wing machine– it has to do with “toughness”.

There is no doubt that the Obamabots are an anathema to the American way of life. They represent the worst that the world has to offer in the way of totalitarian socialist dictatorships that have no soul and crush all descent and opposition.

You got to remember, I think it was also Zanesville that Michelle made her speech that this was the first time that she’s been proud of America, or the one about going into public service and not to follow the money in your life. So people of Ohio do remember. Plus, Obama wants us to believe that it is NAFTA that is destroying Ohio, when in fact it is the high taxes that do not attract businesses. It is not a business friendly state. Most of our businesses have gone the way of India and China, not Canada or Mexico.

True, and that point drove me wild during the primaries. NAFTA isn’t the problem. That’s actually turned out to be quite reciprocal for us with Canada and Mexico.

        I’m appalled, obviously.

I totally agree with this, Ohio. I think because of the stench left by ME-shell’s horrific flop by telling the women of Zanesville they shouldn’t go corporate and seek out money has left a permanent scar both in the town and nationally, and this was BaCaca’s attempt to “Brandenberg Gate” it. That is, to try to paint it over with some phony, ‘soaring’ imagery.

When Obama announced his “faith based” initiative in Zanesville…I thought this guy is clueless.

Those people from small towns, bitter, gun totin’ bible thumpin’ folk from congregational churches do not care for Bush’s faith based initiatives.

Obama incorrectly assumed since they were “religious” bitter white folk that must support Bush’s religious policies.

The large denominations are for the Bush dollars including the Reverend Moon. It is the Roman Catholic, the Presbyterians and the Moonies. The rest want the government to stay out of their business. Congregationalists are fiercely independent. Two minutes of research would have answered that question.

Obama has no clue what goes on with average Americans especially mid westerners and folks from Appalachia.

Ted Strickland, gov. of Ohio, is from that part of the state. He is also a minister Ted offered to help Obama campaign in Ohio as long as Obama did it Strickland’s way versus Kerry’s way. Guess what way Obama decided? Obama could have asked Strickland if announcing his idea to that part of the state would have been well received. I guess Obama didn’t ask.

As a Catholic Conservative Republican resident of Zanesville, Ohio, I can attest to the non-plussed attitude of our community. I must object to the Catholic inclusion in Linda’s assessment of who was looking for the handouts. Maybe in Chicago, dear, … but not in these parts! We tend to our neighbors as family, whether we agree with them politically or in faith.

We sent teams and individuals from every congregation in town, to help after Katrina! Some of us wonder why the hue and cry against FEMA arose, since any and all help deserves gratitude, and so much advance warning was given, … and the feds are forbidden from action until invited by the state!

Democrat or Republican, Zanesvillians are grateful for every cent of federal aid we have ever received. The Army Corps of Engineers attenuated and regulated our flood problem after 1913, by damming the Licking river at Nashport. We know how good they are, and question the cooperation vs. corruption of the New Orleans/ LA government, while aiding and comforting their populace.

If the money were left to the people, their charity would be great! Create wealth, and you will fund charity! Many of us would like our local government to attain the level of sophistication necessary to reduce our need for federal funds in the future, as our charities are great, and our hearts strong. We are Zanesvillians!

I’m in the minority, here. I came back. Most of my peers left, and most of the people here came from poorer, smaller communities to this County Seat, ( New Concord is a Village, Zanesville is a City, by the way, ). Much was said, when Michelle Obama told us to forsake aspiration, about our low per capita ratio of college grads. This is merely a reflection of opportunity! Degrees are only tickets out, because the jobs are not here to support the skills. Education, Health Care, and Justice are the only certain paths. Muskingum County generates many great minds, that find fame elsewhere, while the vacuum left in their departure is filled with the less opportune seeking to fill the void en route the fate of their predecessors!

America is far greater than it might be, for the efforts of the people of Zanesville, Ohio!
