Election Night Open Thread (Update)

UPDATE: A.P.: “AP: Christie Gives GOP Stunning Win In N.J.

How are races sizing up around the country? Fox News has called Virginia for the Republicans — both Governor and Lt. Governor. And the Attorney General GOP candidate is in the lead.

Now for New Jersey. So far, they say, exit polls look good for Christie over Corzine. Who do you think will win?

And here’s some fodder for the Dems to chew on:

There was a phenomenon in 2008 with a lot of irregular or never-vote-at-all voters showing up to vote for Obama. The Democrats cannot count on these erstwhile people to show up. And let’s see if they turn out even in 2012 when Obama’s running for a second term as a president whose “fire has gone out,” as Arianna Huffington said on Morning Joe today. I wonder.

Those 2008 voters are not reliable citizens, in my book. They voted for a personality. They saw a symbol. That is not rational voting, and if they aren’t mesmerized and overwhelmed emotionally, they’re flat out not going to show up. Ever again.

Last: Are there any fascinating races in your neck of the woods?

  • Bronwyn’s Harbor

Please post numbers if you spot any interesting ones. I’m excited about how the NJ race turns out. Let’s see if Corzine’s money is enough to carry him.

    any news from maine?

  • SJ

    Christie, Chris GOP 167,323 52%
    Corzine, Jon (i) Dem 134,055 42%

    Christie, Chris GOP 207,647 54%
    Corzine, Jon (i) Dem 154,146 40%

  • Bronwyn’s Harbor

Woohoo. Early, but … we’ll all have to keep our eyes on the tube and on the news … usually, Drudge is great about posting the latest numbers.

    Drudge has:
    NJ: 207,647 Christie [R] 154,146 Corzine [D] 21,697 Daggett [I]

    in RED INK!

  • Ellen D

I guess I’m in the minority. Frankly, my dear, I don’t give a damn.
Both parties can take a flying leap.

  • SJ

Obama is not watching the election results I wonder why ??

  • Clara

The race in Virginia is all over but the counting. Currently, GOP Gov wins by 20 points and the two other top races (Lt. Gov and AG) are only slightly closer. All three winners are extremely, extremely conservative.

  • Bronwyn’s Harbor

Look at Drudge’s caption below the photo of Obama:

    http://www.drudgereport.com/

    Ha!!!

  • Peggy Sue

I’ve heard the same news on Christie, Brownwyn. But I also heard that if it’s a squeaker, the Dems are prepared to take this to the wire, fight as fast and furiously as they can [while still claiming these races are . . . irrelevant]. Hahahaha!

Corzine outspent Christie by huge amounts, so the very fact this is a nail-biter goes a long way in illustrating how truly unpoular the Governor is. I’m a native of NJ. This is the Blue, Blue state. If Christie manages to pull this one out, it will be quite a coup.

Virginia was pretty much seen as a Republican victory lap. Haven’t heard anything on the 23rd district yet.

Interesting night! One other thing, I heard earlier that the WH did not intend to send its mouthpieces out tonight to speak on the races. That says to me, that the internal numbers are dismal and they expect Party candidates to get clobbered.

  • Peggy Sue

If those percentages hold, Christie wins. Corzine was not expected to break 45%. I think they were hoping the Independent candidate voters would break for the Governor at the last moment. Looks like it’s going in the opposite direction.

    Unreal!

  • http://www.installerstore.com david martin

I google and find no results so far. Seriously, no-one here takes this serious? This is front edge stuff for glb and is to be taken seriously!

Come on Maine!!!!!!! Think RIGHT (and I mean that most sincerely!)

  • confusedinAmerica

independents probably realized a vote for the independent was a vote for Corzine Just like the democrats wanted them not to….

Guess the Independents arent as dumb as the Democrats think LOL

  • Lana

Isn’t that funny, SJ? After spending hundreds of thousands of dollars to go out and stump for these candidates–particularly Corzine–all of a sudden they’re too ho-hum to watch? Riiiight…

  • Lana

    Agree, Peggy Sue. Well said.

  • angie

Yeah, there were a lot of irregular voters who voted for Obama in ’08, and there were a lot of non-existent voters who voted for him too. I have a feeling the non-existent ones will “show up” again in 2012.

  • Obama: Dubya 2 Electric Boogaloo

    By tomorrow it will be

“Corzine is just some guy in my neighborhood”….

    and

    “That’s not the Corzine that I knew”…

Welcome to the bottom of the bus JC!

  • Lana

    Ha! You nailed it!

  • TeakWoodKite

From thte Chicago Tribune in the entertainment section reviewing the new series ‘V’.

The news media swoons in admiration — one simpering anchorman even shouts at a reporter who asks a tough question: “Why don’t you show some respect?!” The public is likewise smitten, except for a few nut cases who circulate batty rumors on the Internet about the leader’s origins and intentions. The leader, undismayed, offers assurances that are soothing, if also just a tiny bit condescending: “Embracing change is never easy.”
So, does that sound like anyone you know? Oh, wait — did I mention the leader is secretly a totalitarian space lizard who’s come here to eat us?

A defeat in New Jersey would sting the Democrats, especially after Mr Obama threw his weight behind Governor Corzine, repeatedly travelling to New Jersey to back the former Goldman Sachs chief executive on the campaign trail.

“We will not lose this election if all of you are as committed as you were last year,” Mr Obama told voters in New Jersey, referring to his own success in mobilising a wide array of voters including Hispanics, African-Americans and the young in the 2008 presidential election.

However, the president’s former campaign manager, David Plouffe, warned against reading too much into Tuesday’s contests.

“The results of these elections tend to be over-read,” he told the NBC network’s Today programme. “These are local races. There’s 18,000 lifetimes between now and next November.”

    Well, which is it?

  • xathnealon

The Repubs have been a sorry, cowardly lot, it’s the people that are speaking today–this is a total referendum on BO’s theft of 757 billion, his radical friends, his and Pelosi’s deathcare bill and his soon to be protested cap and trade garbage–if this rejection of anyone who stood next to BO is not a loud statement that Americans aren’t going to sit by and let this gang finish the job Bush started I don’t know what is.

  • TeakWoodKite

There’s 18,000 lifetimes between now and next November.”

Why only 1800? Odd thing to say.

  • Lana

It’s another one of those made up numbers–you know, like health care reform will only cost 800 billion dollars.

  • FranSC

    Fox has just projected Christie the winner in NJ!! U N B E L I E V E A B L E!

  • Onofre’s arm

Since it is almost certain that if Obama’s candidates were to squeek out wins he would proudly boast that these races were proof that his administration was on the right path, why then can’t we claim that strong Conservative victories are proof that Obama is taking this country in a horribly wrong direction?

Fox just called NJ for Christie!

As I wrote the other day, Obama’s sudden, but phony, indifference, is just a sour grapes excuse for losing the races.

  • Lana

Cnn calling the NJ race for Christie.

  • http://firefox Martha Washington Collier

Fox just projected Christie win in NJ probably due to his prosecution of the corrupt officials with all convictions.

The people interviewed in Virginia who voted for the Republicans because they’re mad as hell…over everything…jobs, the economy, not taking enough time to do health care right rathe than fast.

Hoffman’s race may take awhile to shake out.

  • Lana

CNN also saying that a health care bill will NOT be passed this year.

we swung too far to the right with bush and then we swung too far to the left with the ohole. Is anyone surprised?

  • TeakWoodKite

load as a blank page for me at Ben Smiths blog at politico.
He must be speechless or the blank page must be Obama eclipsing his page.

What’s up with this “NBC reverses Bloomberg election call”, being blank? Did the internet hiccup on this news? Internet road kill?

  • FranSC

BO cannot continue to dismiss the dem candidate, Creed, in the VA Governor’s race as not running a good enough campaign – translation: Creed did not enthusiastically support B0. And, that spells “bad campaign” apparently. Losing by 20 points sends a very different message.

The fact 0 is not watching the returns should come as no surprise. This is the first time he has experienced other’s election or defeat reflecting on him like a spot light.

  • Onofre’s arm

Is there any way I can help? Perhaps a gift wrapped gallon bottle of syrup of ipecac sent to the White House would be welcome.

  • Portia Elizabeth

It’s closer than 300 votes with over 200,000 votes counted. The Portland, Maine, TV station is saying it’s 50/50 right now (11:07 PM).

    Where’s Pookie??????

Stop the attempt to deflect attentionfest!

  • felizarte

Are the NJ results a reflection of ACORN’s inability to act openly as a result of those infamous videos? Are the frequent visits of SEIU’s Andy Stern to the Whitehouse a discussion on how to camouflage an Acorn-like role for SEIU in the coming 2010 midterm elections? ACORN’s inability to play electoral magician could spell trouble for Obama.

  • Obamastolemycountry

Drug use can cause weight loss, too. Once an addict, it wouldn’t take much to make him want to “escape” again.

Maybe he can go to Rehab for a while and Biden can take over for a while and make some unchangeable changes, with the help of SOS. I can dream, can’t I?

  • http://www.musicbyday.com Marvin

I think it’s interesting that we’re supposed to think that these Gov. races have anything to do with the White House or with national party politics when they’ve never been shown to have any kind of correlation in the past (look up the history of Govs in VA & NJ) … why would they suddenly be related now? It’s crazy. It’s like people don’t do basic research on things to see if their ideas make sense…

The NY-23 race is very exciting on the other hand. If the Republicans continue to chase the moderates out of the party, their party will continue to shrink.

  • http://www.musicbyday.com Marvin

Governor races have nothing to do with the White House.

Consider this: In 2001 Virginia & NJ voted for Democratic Governors. That was November 2001. When George W. Bush had an approval rating close to 90% (post 9/11) …

Seriously. Read that again. Just read it one more time. Come on now, you’ll get it.

  • http://www.hillaryorbust.com Hillary or Bust

    Blah blah blah.

The governor’s races are important because people (like you) keep saying the GOP is dead when clearly it is not.

New Jersey is a very blue state. It is astonishing that they voted a Republican in for governor when Obama was putting his “clout” behind the Democrat.

As for the California congressional race, OF COURSE that would go to the Democrat…this was in a very Democratic part of the state.

Which leaves one NY congressional race that went Democrat…this in no way proves that the GOP is dead, part of the problem is one GOP guy siphoned off the votes of the other one.

BTW I am not a registered Republican nor do I plan on becoming one but I am voting straight Republican downticket in 2010 because I don’t want Pelosi et al doing anymore damage.

If (actually when) the Republicans regain power I’ll probably vote Democrat so that no one party is running anything.

  • http://www.musicbyday.com Marvin

In 2001 Democrats won the Governor races in Virginia and New Jersey. That was November 2001 when Bush had a 90% approval rating (post 9/11.)

Did those races have anything to do with how the country felt about Bush at the time? Did they have anything to do with the 2002 or 2004 elections? No, obviously not.

Why would these Gov. races be any different?

And NJ going Republican isn’t some wildly new thing. Republicans held the Governor seat in NJ throughout most of Bill Clinton’s Presidency. Did that say something about him? No.

It’s such a ridiculous stretch to say that these races say anything about Obama or about the national Republican party.

The Republican party is still very clearly alive at a local level, but as a national party it’s dying. The NY-23 race was another sign of that.

  • Onofre’s arm

Got sour grapes growing in YOUR garden, Marvin?

  • DefiantOne

It’s not ridiculous actually. You’re comparing apples and oranges bringing up past elections.

The White House sent an operative to TAKE OVER Corzine’s campaign. I do not believe Bush or Clinton did that.

The reason is because the political climates are very different. In this political climate, intense media coverage and unprecedented scrutiny made these races de facto national contests.

That’s why Obama felt he had to try to intervene. The circumstances are completely different from the old elections you mention.

Obama intervened in these races. He lost. He could not turn out his 2008 coalition. And you are dreaming if you think the anger of independents and Republicans at Obama’s policies didn’t play into these elections.

  • PainkillerJayne

Hours after urging reporters not to draw sweeping conclusions from Tuesday’s gubernatorial elections in New Jersey and Virginia, White House press secretary Robert Gibbs told POLITICO President Barack Obama wasn’t even keeping an eye on the results. “He’s not watching returns,” Gibbs said. The Obama administration and other top Democrats have consistently tried to play down the import of this week’s contests

Fire up Airforce One Boys! I see a World Tour coming on!

  • PainkillerJayne

Help! The spam filter keeps eating my posts!

  • Onofre’s arm

These elections are like a barometer of the political climate. They are clear indicators that Americans in general are less than pleased with the trajectory that the Obama creeps have launched our future on. It is a certainty that the Democrats would have won ALL of these contests if Obama had made prudent and wise decisions in his first year in office. But he’s been abyssmal, a 30 cent rubber stamp of his signiture could have easily accomplished as much with a far greater savings to the taxpayers. These elections are the first substantial chance the public has had to make a tangible indication of their displeasure with Obama and his mounting failures. And since Obama is incapable or unwilling to set this country on a positive tract, 2010 will be a political bloodbath. I look forward to being red in tooth and claw.

  • Ohio Granny

Marvin, Major races in places where Obama won big 12 months ago, and campaigned heavily for are not a reflection of his influence but a third party candidate in some outer limits district in New York reflects totally on the GOP?
Dude, what koolaide are you drinking?
The fact that Hoffman came within single digits of the Democrat pick is utterly amazing. This guy was in single digits 10 days ago.
What the GOP won last night was a purple state (VA), a navy blue state (NJ), and a back bone (NY23). Next time, they will think twice about the core values of the person they promote. Or we’ll spank them again. Only next time, the third party candidate won’t be so quick to pledge loyalty to a party that doesn’t pledge loyalty to freedom.

  • getfitnow

    Jake Tapper tweets:

“The Biggest Loser” is at the White House tonight. This is not a joke.

  • getfitnow

DefiantOne, I agree. BO’s name/photo were on campaign signs/posters. This guy is addicted to campaigning.

  • elizabethrc

This morning I feel revived with the results.
Naturally MSNBC makes a lame attempt at saying that voters were not rejecting Obama in NJ and VA. They maintain he is still liked. Maybe that’s so, but, well, I like my grandmother, too, but she’s not qualified to be president and I’d vote against her if she ran.
This is a case of MSNBC trying to convince us that we don’t really see the iceberg that gashed the side of their boat. The rats on board hopefully will start jumping overboard. Watch the rats, not MSNBC.

  • elizabethrc

Just another example of Obama’s cowardice. He can’t face rejection and prefers to run from it.

    My hero!!!

  • elizabethrc

Don’t count ACORN out yet. This is a very crafty, underhanded crew running this White House and you’re right, felizarte, but misdirection is a big part of this group’s mode of operation. We can’t let our guard down and need Beck to keep pounding the national consciousness about Acorn and the Czars and take nothing for granted.

  • ~~JustMe~~

or maybe a little of YES THEY DID? Marvin…

  • tek

Lol! I do think all of this is a reflection of the public’s mood concerning Obama and his minions. I predict they will adjust nothing; they’ll try to use the rest of his term to push through controversial policies they know a moderate or a conservative won’t endorse.

The Democrats made a huge miscalculation by robbing Hillary. Those Independents were probably mostly Hillary voters.

  • Sassy

    Wowee!
The independents played “pin the tail on the donkey” last night!
It looks like a new day for the GOP, and the Tea Party Express is still rolling!
    Astroturf, huh? Next stop…2010!

  • tek

felizeart: I wonder if that is a factor. We know ACORN pulled corruptions for Obama in 2008.

  • tek

Marvin: the fact that BO went out and stumped for these people and they still couldn’t pull it out shows that BO has no star power. I think he never really did and his administration is nearly a joke, if it weren’t so sad.

  • tek

Marvin: the races show that the Democrats certainly aren’t in the position they thought they’d be in once they got their black Wonder Boy in the WH. I know, I know, how racist! What BO’s administration show is that the disease cannot be the cure.

  • elizabethrc

Marvin, America has never been in a position such as Obama and the Dems have put us in. What is different is that American do not feel that the White House is on America’s side anymore. They seem to be intent on destroying our freedoms, surrounding themselves with avowed Marxists and Socialists and would-be terrorists (Ayers), and catering to third world countries (the bow to the Saudi sheik? American presidents are not supposed to bow to anyone. The apology tours?). If you do not see how this has shaken the confidence in Obama, you are blind and cannot be convinced.
If this is the case, more’s the pity for you.

  • Obamastolemycounty

Well, Obama can’t show his birth certificate or any of his other documents. He may very well be a totalitarian space lizard!

  • westexan

Obama’s 500 campaign promises are coming home to roost. Obama’s freak followers are not getting their free cars, their free houses, their free food, their free beer, their free ride ETCETCETCETCETCETCETCETCETCETCETCETCETCETCETC– but they are getting the bills for them. Nothing is free—EXCEPT empty promises and Obama will give em all they want of that.
