Leave it to a Male Obama Supporter …

… to mock my piece late last night on FireDogLake‘s story on Obama’s wholly inadequate response to “comedian” Bernie Mac’s misogynistic remarks.

John Cole of Balloon Juice gleefully reports that FireDogLake’s story was a spoof, and “I can report that they are stupid enough that they took this spoof at FDL seriously.” Here’s my first-ever “Dear John” letter. Dear readers, feel free to write your own.

Dear John,

Spoofs only work (i.e., are funny) when the material itself is humorous. There’s nothing humorous about Bernie Mac denigrating women as “hos” and complaining his wife is frigid since she experienced menopause. I rarely read your blog, so didn’t realize that you are as immature and sexist as your candidate and his supporters.

Unlike you and, sadly, your female counterparts at FireDogLake, the mature Shakesville bloggers get it. Melissa McEwan, in “Unbelievable,” doesn’t think it’s funny, just one more cruel example of sexism and (her term) misogyny: “Obama chided him for it, only to immediately assure Mac he was just kidding.” Melissa adds:

[I]t really makes me wonder even more WTF Obama was thinking letting off Mac so easy, especially given that he’s “deeply disappointed that John McCain has not spoken out against the attacks leveled against his wife.” (Unless he thinks his wife is magically untouched by misogyny, which I sincerely doubt.)

To response to John Cole’s “How Stupid Is NoQuarter?,” I ask:

Where is the humor in mocking an A.P. report on a comedian’s sexist and crude jokes?

Where is there any acknowledgement by you of the sexism in Bernie Mac’s “jokes”? (I have the answer already: Nowhere.)

Where is there any proof that your candidate — without a teleprompter in front of him — has ever STOOD UP for women?

John, you typify a certain group of young-thug supporters of Obama who cannot see any faults in “The One” and who derisively, unthinkingly mock anyone who does.

Thankfully, there are other blogs for grown-ups. Such as Shakesville, which also has a great piece up on domestic violence, “Looking Over My Shoulder.”

John, you need counseling. Sadly, that is not a spoof remark. I’m serious.

Of course, you’ll first have to recognize that you have a problem. That’s doubtful, but it is critical that impressionable young men and women who read your blog get the message that you too do not tolerate sexism and misogyny.

Read this before your first session: “Feminism 101” at Shakesville. From the section titled On Off-Limits Humor:

On Off-Limits Humor: Here’s the main reason I object to the use of “politically incorrect” humor at this blog: There’s a whole fucking world out there where women and gay men and trannies and racial minorities and the disabled and the overweight and people who are intrinsically and inescapably “different” for any reason are made fun of, marginalized, turned into punchlines. There’s a whole fucking world out there which expects us all to be perfect according to some arbitrary definition and seeks to punish us if we’re not. There’s a whole fucking world out there where people who don’t conform to that standard are not only ridiculed and made to feel not good enough, but can also find themselves at real risk of physical harm. Where they’re denied rights, job opportunities, friendships, votes, equality. If you want to use “politically incorrect” humor that targets those people, you have the entire rest of the bloody world to do it, but you can’t do it here. This is a safe space.

P.S. John, grow up. Calling people “stupid” because they fail to see the humor in degrading jokes about women is a sad sign of immaturity.

UPDATE FROM LARRY JOHNSON: It is good to know that we cannot take FireDogLake seriously. It is astonishing that a blog managed by Jane Hamsher and Christy Hardin Smith would tolerate this kind of sexism. If Michael Richards does an intro for John McCain and does another “nigger” rant, would that be “okay?” Hell no.

          That goes along with the rap song playing prior to an Obama event which included the lyrics, “BEAT THE BITCH” and let’s not forget Obama flipping Hillary the finger in Raleigh, NC and then looking around at the crowd so smugly – he a smug, arrogant AS_HOLE, but, BECAUSE he is – that will be his eventual downfall. It will either be a loss in the fall or impeachment at some point.

      So his campaign issued a sterner statement once Obama was at a safe distance. Also, Bernie Mac called Obama “a man’s man” so Obama couldn’t speak up for women right then and there, could he?

    When parody or spoof actually fools reasonable people (and I dub thee reasonable), it has failed as humor.

    Is it funny to report, for example, that the Pope has died? Or that Turkey has invaded Iraq? No, because those are reasonable events.

    As I’ve stated on another blog, I am a published humorist whose work appears periodically in a major eastern newspaper.

      Exactly. There has to be an inkling that the story is a spoof. There was none, except — perhaps — in the title.

      What disappoints me most is that FireDogLake is led by strong, smart women such as Jane Hamsher and Emptywheel who I cannot imagine would countenance a spoof of crude, sexist remarks and a candidate’s failure to respond authoritatively.

          The outrage over Don Imus’comments failed to touch on the harshest insult to the women’s basketball team. Everyone interpreted “nappy headed hoes” as racist. These were young women on scholarships and in a sport that receives little attention compared to its male counterpart. They were bettering their lives and competing in the world. Did they deserve to be called “hoes”? I heard hip hop artists come out and say the word was misapplied. I lived in an integrated community with many Latinos and blacks. There seemed to be a stronger general response to the sexism than the racism. Many blacks can live with kinky hair. Putting down young women, seeing them cry on TV, and these girls shared an identity with other minorities – that was the real offense. Maybe if they’d been white women, there would have been less outrage. But I can see why Shirley Chisholm said she was attacked more for her gender than her race. The lesson here, of course, is much work needs done.

            Well, I think the types who write for the faux blogs are derivative thinkers. By that I mean that they do not have a universal perspective. They write in reaction to someone else in their small circle.

            That’s why elitism never understands the commonsense values of the working class, who tend to think more for themselves based on experience. The obvious question is why poke the snake at middle-aged women or any woman, for that matter, at a fundraiser? That was poor judgment. It’s just pretty simple.

    Obama is actually an “old” guy — he’s way over 30. Yet he is playing up to the immature jerks. Obama needs to grow up — and let the children be children.

    I know a gentleman who was born before women had the vote and HE remembers when women won the right to vote. He cannot understand the younger women who HATE older women and Hillary Clinton. Yet there is that block of women who are dumb ass Obamabutt supporters. These women have taken advantage of all the struggles of sisters who have fought for every human right. As Hillary Clinton says — Women’s rights are Human rights.

    Unless the younger sisters step up and continue the fight — women will lose ground.

    AND for the dimwits — there are far more women AND Children living in poverty– some of these children are MALES. So this means that male children also suffer because of misogyny.

        A young mother and her 2 children, aged 2 and 11 months were murdered in Marianna, Pa. on July 11. She was in the process of divorsing her abusive husband. She had a PFA out against him. The police and mental health knew of his intent. At the PFA hearing a witness told them that he had said ” if the hearing doesn’t go his way he was going to take Ashley and the kids out. He had nothing to lose” With all that the police and the legal system knew of his intent to murder his family, they left him free to do it. They ignored her rights. They ignored their duties to protect her and her children.

        Any young woman who thinks that their rights will always be their. Or who think that the legal system, that we have today, will help and protect them, need to wake up to reality.

          Such tragedies happen all over the country on a very regular basis. Not that long ago wives and children were viewed by the law in the United States as chattel, the “property” of the husband/father. Perhaps many men still believe they can dispose of their families in whatever way they choose.

    What’s missing in all this is an apology to women. It’s been that way on every issue, from Randi Rhodes calling women effin whores to Bernie Mac calling women ho’s. From Rev Wright saying black girls give away kibbles and bits to Father Plegar’s disparaging remarks about Hillary. Sometimes Obama eventually denounces somebody or issues a token rejection of their comments, but there’s no apology to women for the damage the remarks might have done. Obama has a wife and two daughters, he doesn’t even apologize on their behalf.

    Bill O’Reilly, Hannity, even Chris Matthews, those fools all got it. They all managed to make various statements acknowledging that these are not appropriate ways to talk to women. Hannity apologized to Ferraro for the Randi Rhodes remarks. He had nothing to do with it, he just recognized that it’s basic protocol to acknowledge the remarks were disparaging towards women.

    McCain too, for all his faults, he managed to speak respectfully about Clinton. He managed to acknowledge the historic nature of her campaign, too.

    When the so called “progressives” and the so called “progressive” candidate can’t even manage to show as much respect for women as Fallafel O’Reilly, that’s shameful. That’s an embarassment. It’s a disgrace. To then turn around and mock people complaining about the sexism is beyond the pale.

WHen you have a canidate who has been part of a Marxist-rooted Black Liberation Theology church, where women are dog shit, what do you expect. Do you think as a president this man will change his stripes once he has absolute power?

    Crude, hurtful insinuations toward anyone is a sign of a lack of empathy and understanding of people in general.It’s a sign of the “me” principle. Is that what we want for the leader of our nation? He already is embarrassed by our supposed lack of knowledge of multiple languages (even though he doesn’t have them either), his wife thinks we are “mean”, he associates, and has for his adult lifetime, with America haters, on and on and on we go. Who in the world can even think about voting for him!!?? It is beyond bizarre that this unofficial candidacy has gone on so long. It needs to stop.

    It’s a tasteless and inexcusable joke, but lot’s of jokes are that. Obama publicly called for the firing of Don Imus for using the same word for young black women. Maybe Imus should have mmused about the athelets sleeping with the refs before calling them ho’s. Obama needs to get his story straight.

    What radicalized me in this primary was seeing the “Bro’s before Ho’s T-shirt. It was not funny, not OK, and not going away.

      And don’t kid yourself- that t-shirt pretty much says alot about the Obama campaign. What shocks me is that any decent man and ANY woman young or old would find it acceptable. Have women lost all their self-respect and self confidence? Is Obama empowering women or brainwashing them? I think the later and it is the biggest threat to our democracy of this campaign in addition to the corporate hold of the media.

      Excuse my catching up this a.m. – I left out early “clinging to my religion”, as BO would say, by going to church.

      Are these Bernie Mac/BO remarks getting any coverage on the Sunday Public Affairs talk shows? I know Fox has some real news on the Calif. wildfires, and tributes to the late Tony Snow (I believe they’re entitled to do so, especially considering the MSNBC coverage on Tim Russert’s death). I could hardly stand to hear some of the comments from the hosts/pundits on the Sunday network shows, but seems like they’re minimizing Jesse Jackson’s comments, and haven’t picked up on this at all. How does that happen? They ignore the AP story and the Internet reactions until it percolates up to them?

      Believe I know it happens because they want to minimize and trivialize this story as well, because as the pundits themselves say, takes the campaign “0ff Message” (gist of Bob Scheaffer’s, Cokie Roberts’ remarks*) And yet isn’t the way the candidates or their surrogates, comedians conduct themselves, replete with expletives, misogyny, and desires to dismember bodily parts, all part of the message, or revealing of their character, beliefs? (Not to mention what a lot of folks hook into, if nothing else?)

      Note: If The McLaughlin Group had been done today, instead of taped Friday, ole John might have covered it. Will look forward to his panel reviewing the Jesse Jackson comments, i.e., does it reflect a rift in the AA community, in a bit.

      Q. How can we, especially PUMAs, get the word out, or punch through the MSM on this latest Bernie Mac story?

      *Understand I don’t watch much of George Stephanopolous’ ABC show (“This Week”) because he insists on putting Donna Brazile on every week. I.e., see her, change channels. Wish she could be cited for conflict of interest somehow, given her role in the DNC, supporting, or ram-rodding Obama…George’s ratings might go up from the bottom. Crosses a line between journalism and blatant promotion. What the heck is a “pundit” anymore?

    As a reader of the post I didn’t take the headline seriously, but I saw absolutely nothing funny in the content of the post.

    Such offensive jokes, like the ones Bernie Mac made in public, on an event in connection with a candidacy for POTUS, of all places, the subsequent kidding him by Senator Obama and finally John Cole’s defending of this inacceptable, belitteling sexist and misogynyic behaviour take us back decades. Is this what the NEW liberals champion?

    Humor is a wonderful thing, but this attempt of humor is deplorable, to put it mildly. And to have the audacity to call others stupid, if they don’t join in laughing is very childisch and immature IMHO.

    I remember when Jane Hamsher had a vote on her blog ask whether or not Obama’s “Periodically when she feels low her claws come.” Jane didn’t think is was a sexist comment. Her spoof just confirms my suspicion she is as clueless as John about sexism.

      These women exhibit self hatred. If women can’t recognize that they are being put down or that a politician is being disrespectful to WOMEN — then they have a poor self image.

      There was a unified message post WWII to women — stifle yourselves and stay AT HOME.

      It seems that as the economy takes a downturn that women are again getting the “stifle yourselves” message.

      Older women are the “other” — the one group that can be blamed for everything that goes wrong.

      The young women who join in on the bashing of older women don’t seem to realize that everyone gets old (unless they die young).

      And the problem is world wide — not a whole lot has changed since Hillary Clinton made that UN speech in China years ago. It seems that women are disposable.

      With a Prez Obama (nightmare) — women all over the world are at risk. Not much would change for women — and probably it will get much worse.

      John and other Obamabutts don’t understand that condoning misogynistic humor by a candidate for President sends a message to people that hatred toward a whole group is accepted and sanctioned by Obama.

      Hitler used the economic downturn of Germany to target a racial group as “the other” — and all the hatred could be dumped on “the other”. In Cambodia it was the educated classes who were “the other”. That’s how hatred directed toward a specific group works. Humans are barely tamed individuals — and mob rule, mob violence is just under the surface.

      Our leaders must be aware that WORDS matter. Obama gave a speech about words have meaning — however he DID not write the speech — so he probably no longer remembers the words of that speech.

      Obama is a jerk.

      They along with much of Left Blogostan turned into Obama One Notes and they are no longer relevant.

      Now no matter what they write I don’t care. Dishonesty and lack of integrity does not engender trust. They are no longer trustworthy and thus it’s a waste of time to bother clicking on their sad little blog.

      How sad that so many women accept misogyny and yet are appalled by racism. I don’t choose my “ism” to be against. I think they all stink.

    2- Professional Comedians always know the audience they are pandering too and gear their act towards the audience they are performing for. Bernie Mac is no exception, his material was chosen just like every other comedians material is chosen to suit the event!

    3- Obama could care less what was said since the event was a prepaid event and he already had the money for the audience in his bank account already!

    4- If Obama was pandering to wallets that evening, his tone might have been different towards Bernie Mac’s statements, as it has been at other pandering events, problem is, this event showed the true Obama since his bank account was already filled with the money from this prepaid event!

The fact that anyone writes apologetic pieces about a comic who was literally heckled off the stage because his routine was so offensive and yet cannot see the irony that a non-sexist routine would require no apology at all leaves me with one conclusion: These people don’t think clearly.

      After 18 months of pantsuit jokes, he thought it was a good crowd for menapause jokes? Lordy, what a dufuss, but then comics aren’t exactly known for good judgement.

      Obama’s handling of it was more relevant to political writers or should be. He botched it. First he was too earnest. (It’s a comedy routine, Barack, not McCain.) Then he adjusted too far and undid his rejection entirely. Then he issued the memo explaining what he meant to say.

      OK, but that doesn’t explain why he’s so lame on handling things that pop up spontaneously.

      Obama is proving daily why his polls are tanking…again. I suspect this time he won’t bounce back.

    Listen, I am a woman, I support this website, I support Hillary, and I am very much against Obama.

    That said, I was extremely disappointed to come here yesterday to read a screaming headline in CAPS that suggested that this Bernie Mac thing was a SCANDAL that was going to cost Obama the presidency.

    It was way over the top and furthermore referenced an article over at Firedoglake, which, last I checked, wasn’t a Hillary Haven. Check your sources!

    I understand that many people are offended by the “hos” remark that Bernie made. I wasn’t offended so much as puzzled as to why he thought it was funny. Furthermore, I did not find his menopause remark to be “bashing” women who have menopause, or bashing women whatsoever. It was a joke about marriage and I thought people were totally overreacting to it.

    Now, I am not here to justify the misogyny that crops up in certain elements of black culture, such as hip-hop, but on the other hand, I think it’s a losing proposition for us to focus on and slam a black comedian considering the cultural differences between black and white culture as it now stands. If you start ranting about how black culture isn’t supportive of women, you are walking a slippery slope and opening all Hillary supporters up to charges of racism.

    The fact is – BLACK WOMEN somehow end up having better self-esteem and body image issues than white women, which is why it is perfectly OK for them in their culture to have some weight on, while white women are starving themselves in anorexia.

    These issues are more complex and we should not have knee-jerk reactions that hurt the credibility of Hillary supporters.

    Think for a moment.

    When you go on and on about menopause being “off limits” to joke about, you give credence to our critics who call us bitter, humorless, “dried up” women. NOT a good idea. Pick your issues and your battles wisely!

    Bottom line: Going down this path of focusing on Bernie Mac is the NOT the focus I want to see No Quarter take.

    It reminds me of the whole “Whitey” tape focus. People here were drooling over it, hoping it would somehow be the magic bullet to kill Obama’s presidency. And then the tape never showed up and we all ended up looking like assholes.

    The same with this issue. We have better things to discuss here than run screaming, over-the-top headlines about how some comedian is supposedly going to lose Obama the presidency.

    Think before you post this stuff. Have some restraint and don’t let your anger run your writing. You are not helping the cause when you open our movement up to ridicule like this.

      This is exactly the same argument I saw repeatedly every single time we tried to speak up about the sexism against Hillary in the primary.

      We were told the same thing. We were hurting the “cause” to complain. We were feeding the perception that we were old women. We were…..

      I agree with the new spokesperson of Women Count Too. It was wrong of us to be intimidated by such arguments. We should have been raising a ruckus all along, rather than sitting back and waiting for someone else to do it so we could look like good sports who can take a hit. We sat back and let her get hit repeatedly, to the point of real damage.

      That was OUR fault. We can blame the TV guys, the young male turks for Obama, and anyone else. BUT the truth is that if we do not speak out about what is offensive to us, then we really have no room to complain that people don’t change.

      All I can tell you is that considering Obama is stating he wants women’s votes and Hillary’s fundraisers to help him, the routine was in poor taste.

      Normally, I agree with your posts. I have to also add that I’m very tired of people presuming to tell others what they should think or say or focus upon because it’s for the “good” of the cause.

          There are Women Count, Too, who are focusing on broadening the definition in America of what is and is not a woman’s issue. They argued effectively and powerfully that Emily’s List is much too confined within the traditional Roe VS Wade fears and contraception issues. This group could breathe life back into our country and stop the trend that sexism is OK, and we should all just get over it.

          There are Clinton Dems, who are determined to put Hillary in as the candidate.

          There are Independent Pumas, focused on supporting third party candidates such as Cynthia McKinney.

          You are just ONE among many. Your voice is important, but you are not the standard bearer or what is “hurting the cause.” There is NO ONE CAUSE. Get it?

        Everyone was hoping it was the actual tape. Come Monday morning, it was just more speculation about the tape.

        It was the over-the-top promotion of the alleged tape, which never surfaced, that hurt credibility here. Thankfully the Whitey tape issue has been dropped for now. But No Quarter needs to try to be more savvy in its screaming headlines, or suffer ridicule.

          You also never pointed out that the story had been broken in the news already before NQ began posting about it. The Obama campaign was aware of this in April on the heels of the Wright scandal. They issued a statement to calm their backers that MO was talking about Bush, Katrina and the Iraq war saying “Why d’he… ”

          So Dave Weigel and some other toot-sniffing sushi progressives said LJ lost credibility. For now, that remains to be seen.

        I don’t have a problem with discussing this issue, but we need to discuss it RATIONALLY and CALMLY. We need to think about the message we are trying to get across.

        Screaming and ranting about it, and making it into something it is not (some SCANDAL that will hurt Obama’s chances at president) does absolutely NOTHING to raise awareness. In fact, it has the opposite effect. It encourages dismissal of the issue.

        If someone here had posted a reasoned, thought-out piece discussing the language used in this campaign, along with the issues of black street culture and how the “hos” thing came about in the first place, I would have welcomed that.

        What we have instead is a lot of knee-jerk reacting and no critical thinking on the issue.

    Lowdowndog reminded me of another incident that happened at FDL, back in the first week of Feb when Jane stuck up for her MessNBC bud David Shuster over the ‘pimp out Chelsea’ remarks that he was suspended for. Jane claimed there was nothing wrong with what he said and went further to say excuse it was just harmless “Hollywood slang”, or some such rot. That taking what he said on national TV while he represented a so called ‘News org’ as sexism only diminished the problem of real sexism. It was an apologistic jawdropper.

    The result? For weeks little punks ran around the blogosphere quoting Jane, and saying she doesn’t think what Shuster said/did was sexist, and why no!, I’m not being sexist either you dried up old cunt! I kept some of those punk Blozos’ comments that I found for a piece I didn’t get around to writing to *thank* Jane a whole lot for enabling the punks to get even worse with us ladies than they already were. It seems that was also around the time Digby had to shut off her comments for awhile because of the growing abuse towards her and all females.

    No sexism is ever funny, snarky, excusable, tolerable, or acceptable to me. You’re still free to dare to distastefully commit it, but I’m sure you’ll understand why you won’t ever be welcome to party at our table. Much less live it down.

      The “pimping someone out” slang is a generational thing. I personally don’t find offense to it and have said it myself. (Though, it is not something that should be part of a network news broadcast any more than saying “piss off” should be.)

      Do you think it’s offensive to say someone is “prostituting” themselves, such as, “Joe prostituted himself by taking on that shady job just for the money?”

      What’s the difference? A pimp is someone who facilitates the act of “prostitution,” which could be performed by women as well as male prostitutes. Using the term “pimp” is not an insult to all women.

      If you have ever used the term “to prostitute oneself” then you should not be offended by the term “pimping.” It’s more colorful but has a similar connotation. It also has a more humorous level in the idea of someone trying to “pimp” you out to do something you don’t want to do, but they are egging you on. I’ve heard the term “pimp out” apply to men equally as women, it’s not a gender thing anymore.

      The term has gone way beyond its roots at any rate.

      I’m not articulating myself that well here, but I hope you are getting the gist of what I’m saying here. Language changes and some words may have offensive origins but then take on new lives. We could come up with a whole slew of words with shady origins if we wanted to.

    Sorry “Hillary or Bust” but black women have the same self esteem and body image issues as white women. They just manifest in different ways. I think you will also find that in the last couple of decades black female teenagers are becoming more prone to anorexia/bulimia as they try to emulate what they see in the media. Another example is the myth that black women are stronger (mentally) than white women. We see now that depression is rampant and chronic among black women.

    N. Lee, they have no one lower on the social scale (from their distorted POV) to ridicule than poor whites and women. I think poor southern whites (trailer trash) at least have some reasons for their ignorance and bigotry; lack of educational opportunities, low wages, and fewer chances to climb out of their circumstances and provincial attitudes. Not much Affirmative Action for the group down in the “hollars”. Even then, some find their way out through the military or, if they’re lucky, being taught true Christian principles. Guns and bibles aren’t always used for clinging.

    The people who have absolutely no excuse are wealthy black entertainers and politicians such as Rock, Mac and Obama who apparently will always be uncouth, uncultured and low class no matter how many McMansions they have or slick cars they drive. If you can’t use your bank account to hire people to teach you manners and what’s acceptable in appropriate company, then you are truly ignorant. Most of them only invest in a “stylist” or a PR person to polish up the exterior for public consumption. Although some promote the gutter and being whores even then. The classic example of not being able to “make a silk purse out of a sow’s ear.” which I see more and more people using these days relating to pop black culture.
    Let’s just hope that Obama doesn’t go to Europe and in his JFK fantasy, crossed with low hip-hop culture, declare that “I am the man who accompanied my Ho to Paris.”
