Jihadist Wannabe

(This post is bumped up from Friday.)
Major Nidal Malik Hassan short circuited yesterday and we had more American soliders killed in one day at Fort Hood than have been killed in Afghanistan in a single day this year. So much for the dangers of combat. Hassan is not a Post Traumatic Stress Disorder victim. Anyone who tries to push that line is as delusional as Hassan.
What about Islam? We have to deal with these hard facts. There are over 1 billion muslims in the world. If murder and mayhem was a simple consequence of being muslim then we would see horrific, horrendus attacks every day. But we do not. However, Hassan’s religious devotion did not dissuade him from killing unarmed people in a cowardly fashion. The soldiers may have been wearing uniforms but they were not armed and certainly were not in a combat theater.
There was a break down in the Army chain of command. Why?
Hassan, through previous comments and actions, showed clear signs that he was not fit for duty, particularly as a psychiatrist. As is so often the case in a large bureaucracy like the Army it is always easier to defer action or pass along a problem rather than fix it. Fixing a dysfunctional guy like Hassan is a lot of trouble. At a minimum there will be a mountain of paperwork. I realize that hindsight is always 20/20, but his last fitness report should have set off some alarm bells.
But cases like Hassan are not unique. I know an Army Lt. Colonel who is currently stationed in Europe. He is not muslim but he is a disturbed personality who talks openly of his SadoMasochistic fantasies. The Army promoted him last year from Major to Lt. Colonel. He has some disturbing personality traits and could very well blow his cork one of these days. And what did the Army do? They promoted his sorry ass.
Let’s not forget that there are several thousand muslim soldiers and marines who are serving their country honorably. The cowardice of Nidal Malik Hassan should stain only Nidal. That is no comfort for those families weeping today for their fallen soldier.
I do not think that Nidal Hassan was part of some jihadist cell. He acted on his own, apparently inspired by what he thought was “jihad.” I heard his cousin claim, “Nidal was a good American.” No, Nidale was a bad American. He’s a despicable person. He took an oath as a physician to do no harm. He has inflicted pain and suffering that will span generations. We may come up with some explanations of why this happened but I am certain that there is no excuse for this action. None. I hope the military moves quickly to court martial and execution of this man. He deserves that.
