A Different Angle on Obama’s Campaign Finance Numbers

Campaign finance junkies tend to believe that dollars from big donors reflect favors that candidates will owe to those donors — especially money given by corporate employees or bundled by lobbyists.

Such perceptions might be why Barack Obama’s campaign staff has done numerical gymnastics trying to create the impression that the campaign is mostly funded by truly small donors (those who gave a total of $200 or less). You can read about those gymnastics here.

While Obama’s staffers have been diligent about comparing percentages relating to donation size, they don’t seem too keen on comparing the actual dollar amounts that Obama and McCain have received from "big" donors.

No worries: I have the data and am happy to make the comparison for them.

The table below is based on data from a Campaign Finance Institute pdf that lists donation totals from January 2007 through May 2008.  I highlighted in red the higher figures for each category of totals received from "big" donors, and “mil” means “million”:

$201-$999 $1000-$2299 $2300+  $1000+ (all)
Obama
$50 mil . $42 mil $48 mil $91 mil
McCain $14 mil . $24 mil $43 mil $67 mil

Note: to conserve space, I used only the first two digits of the figures: this worked in Obama’s favor in some categories and in McCain’s favor in others.

I did not make up the categories.  Obama’s campaign chose $200 as a cutoff point between big and small donors, as evinced by a statement that his staff made to the New York Times last month:

"The Obama campaign highlighted Thursday the fact that 93 percent of the more than three million contributions it had received were for $200 or less." (NY Times, emphasis added)

The $200 cutoff likely stems from the fact that the Federal Elections Commission doesn’t require itemization for donors who give a total of $200 or less. If the FEC and Sen. Obama use $200 as a cutoff, who am I to argue?

To prevent confusion over the New York Times quote, I’ll mention (as I did a few weeks ago) that small donors contributed 49% of Obama’s total donations (from January 2007 – May 2008), meaning that big donors contributed 51%.

That 49% is an impressive statistic — better than McCain’s small-donor percentage — but it’s a far cry from the 93% that skim readers might mis-interpret as the portion of Obama’s total donations received from small donors.

My point is not to draw conclusions about Sen. Obama’s having taken larger amounts of money from big donors than McCain has since January 2007.

I just want to get the data out there, since most media have failed to present said data to the general public.

I think more GOP money than foreign money. Thats why McCain faired so poorly in early fundraising. The GOP was busy funding Barry. Now that Barry has the nomination, to the delight of the GOP, the money has dried up pretty much. The GOP is giving its money to McCain.

  • anna shane

its in the speech, he says more than half his donations are from small donors, which can mean either that small donors contribute more than half his donations, or that more than half his donors are give small donations. It only means one, but people chose the one that meets their desire. In fact he has more than half small donors who all together contribute less than half his overall take.

The other thing that’s not logical is he claims hillary, who has never been shown to favor any donator, small or large, must be ‘dirty’ because she accepts donations from large corporations. This can only mean that he thinks he would be beholden to big donors. but then he has big donors, ergo, and he’s done favors, ergo, while she hasn’t, ergo.

He trust hardly anyone really listens to him, maybe because he hardly listens himself.

but don’t expect his donors to get it, they already know their small donations have contributed over half of his dollars, even though it isn’t true.

  • trist

It actually may have been coming from several different places. But apparently it’s stopped now. So what’s he gonna do? Once again his superior judgment has lead him astray. He opted out of the 85mil public funds, and his small donors apparently aren’t towing the line. Soooo…..
He really MAY have to start printing his own money!

This also is bad news for the dumb Dems who were counting on HIS donors to rebuild THEIR chest, since he’s told them no-no to accepting PACs. And the Hillary people aren’t giving them a dime now.
Yup, Obama wasn’t kidding when he promised to bring “change” but that’s about ALL he’ll be bringing! LOL!

MAUREEN DOWD Maureen Dowd in a 29 June 2008 column in the New York Times writes about “Obama’s Troubling Internet Fund Raising”

Certainly the most interesting and potentially devastating phone call I have received during this election cycle came this week from one of the OBAMA’s campaign internet geeks. These are the staffers who devised Obamas internet fund raising campaign which raised in the neighborhood of $200 million so far. That is more then twice the total funds raised by any candidate in history and this was all from the internet campaign.

What I learned from this insider was shocking but I guess we shouldn’t be surprised that when it comes to fund raising there simply are no rules that cant be broken and no ethics that prevail.
    [snip]

…. about two months into the campaign the daily contribution intake multiplied. Where was it coming from? One of the web site security monitors began to notice the bulk of the contributions were clearly coming in from overseas internet service providers and at the rate and frequency of transmission it was clear these donations were programmed by a very sophisticated user.

    . . .

It became clear that these donations were very likely coming from sources other than American voters. This was discussed at length within the campaign and the decision was made that none of these donations violated campaign financing laws.

It became clear that these donations were very likely coming from sources other than American voters. This was discussed at length within the campaign and the decision was made that none of these donations violated campaign financing laws.

It was also decided that it was not the responsibility of the campaign to audit these millions of contributions as to the actual source (specific credit card number or bank transfer account numbers) to insure that none of these internet contributors exceeded the legal maximum donation on a cumulative basis of many small donations. They also found the record keeping was not complete enough to do it anyway.

    This is a shocking revelation.

Her column was sent to me by friends who are conservative Republicans — the DNC may choose to ignore the implications of Obama’s overseas fund raising — but the GOP will not let this go unnoticed.

So the DNC tossed out Clinton and went for the gangster from Chicago with lots of dirty money.

The column was reproduced with her photo — and this information has been exposed by others — the off shore donations flowing into Barky’s campaign coffers.

This is being sent to ALL Republicans and they are forwarding this information to their friends. The point is that the Republicans ARE sending out information about Obama — and my Republican friends forward the emails to me.

Obama has NOT been careful in his fund raising — way back in late 2007 he was warned that playing loose and easy on fund raising would come back to bite him on the ass.

Clinton did not accept online offshore donations. She was far more responsible in her fund raising than was Obama.

And here is who we are. Get used to it. From the words of:

    Dr. Martin L. King

    Quote~

We are here in a general sense because first and foremost we are American citizens and we are determined to apply our citizenship to the fullness of its meaning. We are here also because of our love for democracy, because of our deep-seated belief that democracy transformed from thin paper to thick action is the greatest form of government on earth.

We stand for Democracy what is it again you stand for? Since so many of you are unwilling to fight for Democracy, we must take the reins and do so for you.

You better quit listening to the Socialist/Communist rhetoric. They’re not fighting for you, they’re fighting against you. I understand you support Obama and you wanted him to win. But even “YOU”; all his supporters should not want him to win using these tactics.

Now that you’ve condoned it. What has happened. What about the next time? And it isn’t someone you want to win? Yet, they use these tactics? Is it then you’ll stand up for Democracy? Then may be too late. You better wake up and realize the few precious rights your forefathers gave to you. Learn to fight for them. Protect them. Or before you know it, they will be gone. Forever…not only for us, but all future generations. This isn’t just about Hillary, but you’ll never get that part. Because you don’t want too.

I heard a lot of Republicans on another blog today saying where is our coup against McCain. I think they may be blind…

I think McCain winning the popular vote is just that, a coup from the Republicans. People are tired of the radical views from both sides of the table. We all have to be willing to give some on both sides. Compromise, to make it work for everyone. This isn’t just a country of ultra Conservatives, or Ultra Liberals. If neither side is willing to work with the other side, we all lose.

If Hillary is not the nominee I too am voting for McCain.

An usually philosophical observation – brought on by that incredibly creative video link:

To those who study energy centers (also called chakras) there are geographical energy centers as well. It is interesting to note that Hillary is from the Chicago area- where, by inversion, obama settled there (from whatever dark dimension he arrived.)

Chicago, in energy terms, is said to be the “Heart Center” of the United States. That moving video brought up that this political situation really feels like a struggle for the “Heart” of America – for darkness or light.

I’m going to be so I won’t be here when someone reintreprets the dark v light statement to call me a racist.

  • Ted

This really doesn’t prove much, one way or the other. Let’s face it, when you are raising more than $100,000,000 for your full campaign, any individual contribution is small, since an individual can only max out at $4600 for primary and general combined. That won’t buy you access. The big money guys are the bundlers, the PACs, the 527s.

I know there are freedom of speech considerations, but wouldn’t it be nice if all of those were made illegal, so candidates truly could only get small donations. Also have to wipe out the convention donation system (who needs a $60,000,000 convention anyway) and the large limit on donations to a Party.

It’ll never happen, but it would be a step forward. (Probably have ti limit self-financing too so that wealthy people don’t have a huge advantage.

I received the same email, and in it, a number of Middle Eastern countries are cited. I found it unnerving and frightening that our country may indeed be being manipulated by Arab countries.
