Enough Already

I haven’t posted in a while because quite frankly I haven’t had anything to contribute since the DNC “resolved” the Michigan and Florida mess. But today I’ve been smoked out of my undisclosed location because I just can’t take it anymore.

At issue: This week’s New Yorker cover.

Honestly, is this what we’ve come to? Is this the most important issue the press has to focus on in this campaign? Is this really worth all the faux agita and high dudgeon it’s stirred up?

Just to be clear, here’s what I care about.

Two years ago my then-husband talked me into buying a house. I did so and took out a traditional 30-year mortgage. Thank God I wasn’t talked into one of those goofy ARMs.

Last fall I put the house on the market. No takers. I’ve reduced the price $50,000 and thrown in every conceivable goodie imagineable. No dice. Even if I rent the place I’d still be about $800 per month in the hole. In the meantime, as I wait for this house to move half my take-home pay – that’s half – is going to pay the mortgage. And that doesn’t count the money I’m sinking into the house to entice a buyer – landscaping, repairs, etc. Just to be clear, the house is located Montgomery County, a decent suburb of D.C. It’s close to shopping and public transportation. It’s a great deal at the price it’s listed for. But I can’t give the damn thing away.

I’m sure that there are a lot of people in my position.

I’m concerned about whether the Bush administration’s meddling could cause Pakistan’s government to fall. I’m also concerned about whether the same crowd that brought us the Iraq war could embark on a demented mission in Iran as an au revoir to the country. Hey, there’s still plenty of time. The Bush people could do a lot of damage between now and January.

So pardon me for not giving a damn about what the New Yorker wants to feature on its cover. Some of us have more important things to worry about.

Now let’s take a stroll down memory lane and take a look at Joe Scarborough giving Hillary Clinton some love:

The votes cast during the primaries were for delegates to represent the will of the voters at the Democratic Convention in Denver. The actual votes for the candidates are not cast until the convention. If the DNC does not change the rules the delegates will have the opportunity to cast their votes and then the superdelegates will be able to cancel out the votes they don’t agree with.
In short, Hillary did not lose, the votes have not been cast and I will not get over it (what ever IT is)!

I’ve already decided that I’m voting for the sensible African-American candidate, the one whose positions have stayed consistent, even on Iraq, from the onset. Now, granted this candidate has their own fair share of “radical nutcases” who’ve spouted inane comments, but my candidate certainly has never disowned the most influential one.
My candidate is Cynthia McKinney (of the Green Party). Yes, she’s had to deal with a real nutjob who’s frequently made her life difficult by spouting all sorts of nonsense, but what can she do? She’s never thrown anyone under the bus to advance her career, much less her own father.
You can argue that McKinney may be less feasible than Obama, but I put forth the fact that she honestly has remained steadfast in her beliefs, never wavering just because those beliefs have made her unpopular. Given Obama’s recent flip-flopping on almost everything, I certainly can’t see him standing up, directly accusing Bush of covering up 9/11.

If you’ve been listening him for the past year, it’s pretty clear it hasn’t.

And I strongly support faith based initiatives, ESPECIALLY Obama’s, which will give money to pro-homosexual religious organizations, unlike the faith based initiatives of John McCain.

Promoting the programs already put in place by well-meaning (not hateful) religious organizations is a great way to help those in need in this country without having to create the infrastructure or spend the money that new federal programs would cost.

Jim Johnson who formerly ran Walter Mondale’s presidential campaign, and was until last month was head of Obama’s search for a VP. I dont agree with needing to curtail political cartoons. They are a part of every election. Of course the mortgage crisis, the war, tanking stocks and oil prices hitting the roof are real issues, but the New Yorker doesnt usually deal with ‘news’ kinds of items like Mother Jones or Time magazine purport to. It is a social commentary. Basically Hillary Clinton got so much guff during her campaign, and by extension all of us her supporters, that Im really happy to see the Obamatrons get a little of their own medicine.
Check out the history books and you will see political candidates being lampooned back to the beginning of our elections.

I was thinking abt this very thing earlier – thank you for the awesome post. Another similarity between Obama and Bush: somehow, Obama has elevated himself (and been elevated) to such a height that we cannot even poke fun at him (though the cover was poking fun at EVERYONE else – just sayin’). It’s just like the perceived racism (e.g., Bill and Hillary when nothing racist was said) and everything else that the Obama people have blown WAY out of proportion. Obama’s ‘civilian national security force’ For several days now, WND has been hounding Barack Obama’s campaign about a statement he made July 2 in Colorado Springs – a statement that blew my mind, one that has had me scratching my head ever since.

In talking about his plans to double the size of the Peace Corps and nearly quadruple the size of AmeriCorps and the size of the nation’s military services, he made this rather shocking (and chilling) pledge: “We cannot continue to rely on our military in order to achieve the national security objectives we’ve set. We’ve got to have a civilian national security force that’s just as powerful, just as strong, just as well-funded.”

Who will Obama appoint to administer this new “civilian national security force”? Where will the money come from? Where in the Constitution does he see justification for the federal government creating such a domestic army
At this point all I can do is enlist your help – and the help of every other journalist who still thinks the American people have a right to know the specifics about a presidential candidate’s biggest and boldest initiatives before the election. I also want to ask radio talk-show hosts across America to start asking this same question. I have a feeling if others join our quest, we might yet get clarification on this proposal from Obama.

Certainly there have been initiatives like this elsewhere – Cuba, the Soviet Union, China, Venezuela, North Korea. But has anything like this ever been proposed in a free country?
