A “Teachable Moment” That Didn’t Take With Obama

* Bumped up *

Remember back in April when Obama traveled to the G-20 and bowed to the king of Saudi Arabia? If not, here it is:

Actually, that doesn’t look as much like a bow as it does a genuflect. Not, true, says Obama’s Spokes Weasel, Robert Gibbs. Oh, no – it is just because Obama is tall, and “bending over.” I am not kidding you – that’s what he claimed. So, don’t believe what you actually SAW, just believe Spokes Weasel that it’s not what it looked like it was.

Well, it would seem Obama learned nothing from that experience when he traveled to Japan and met the Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko of Japan:

Sigh. I know it is customary to bow in Japan, but this is a bit over the top for anyone, much less a US president, or another world leader. You will notice that, while the Emperor or Empress bows in return, it is slight, almost imperceptible. Nice to see that SOME people understand decorum and protocol, even if Obama doesn’t. They were modeling the appropriate level for him, and he missed it. I might add, Obama doesn’t bow just once, he does it over and over and over again (though not as low) like a frikkin’ bobblehead. His hosts, however, are not recirpocating.

Wow. So much for the President of the United States bowing to no one. What an amateur. Respect is one thing. Subordination is another. This appears to be a case of the latter, IMHO.

Yep, the second bow heard around the world. Oh, and the topic of discussion? Green tea ice cream. I’m not making this up, people, that’s what Obama discussed with the Emperor and Empress.

Perhaps Obama could take a few lessons from Secretary of State Clinton on how one meets with other world leaders, particularly in Japan, as this video from February, 2000 demonstrates (pay special attention around the 5:10 mark when the Empress and Clinton greet each other):

You’ll notice Clinton did not bow to the Empress. Though I have to say, the looks exchanged between the two women were quite lovely. They seem to really like each other (and who doesn’t like our Hillary??). Other than that, not a bow in sight. Oh, sure, she nodded her head a few times in recognition when someone bowed to her, but a real bow? Uh, yeah, NO. Didn’t see a one.

Once again, our Amateur in Chief is on display for all the world to see, and believe you me, they all saw it, too. Seriously, he needs to get some real protocol officers instead of asking one of his frat boys from their video games (“No, really, dude – I’m pretty sure they bow to each other in Japan. At least that’s what my Samurai warriors just did to each other on my X Box…”).

How I wish I could say I was surprised at Obama’s breach of protocol after his “teachable moment” in April with the King of Saudi Arabia. But when you have a president who gives a “shout out” and CALLS it a “shout out” after finding out about a devastating attack on one of our military bases before even acknowledging the attack, this is just par for the course. It just leaves me shaking my head…

    Obama = amateur night reject.

  • Docelder

He has no respect for the office he holds. But he does like the perks of it. What narcissist wouldn’t?

  • Daisy Mae

How embarrassin’. He shore do know how to draw attention to hisself.

  • http://www.rabblerouserruminations.blogspot.com/ Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy

Yes, he sure does like the perks, and he sure does know how to draw attention to himself. His approval rating is already at 50%. (I now – what’s wrong with the 50%?) Seems like a pretty quick plunge to me.

And this kind of thing is just so telling, and what it says is not good…

  • Jackarooty

Yes I remember when our girl visited the Empress this past February. It was very impressive that they were photographed holding hands after the affectionate greeting.

Did you happen to see Morning Joe this morning? After showing a segment from her appearance on MTP, Joe made a comment “and she’s not the President because”…he went on and on about how sharp she was and definitely “on her game”…but we already knew that!!!

  • Peggy Sue

My father-in-law had a few choice words about the Obama bow in Japan. And I suspect my father and uncles are rolling in their graves. All served in the Pacific theater. Not only was the bow offensive but I understand the Prez ducked a question on the legitimacy of using nuclear force in Japan, which ultimately brought the war to an end.

Profiles in courage! If it’s not PC to discuss, Obama bows or ducks on the continued apology tour. I find it hard to believe that Obama has a protocol officer with these continued gaffes. Or if he does, he’s obviously not paying attention to the recommendations.

Btw, I read the “he’s so-o-o tall” excuse on the Far Left blogs for the “I’m sniffing the Emperor’s crotch” bow.

    Incredible!

  • Daisy Mae

When will this consummate narcissist implode? When will the love not be enough for him? A friend asked me, “Does he do these things deliberately to piss us off?”

  • Daisy Mae

When will this consummate narcissist implode? When will the love not be enough for him? A friend asked me, “Does he do these things deliberately to piss us off?”

Peggy Sue, I’m glad you mentioned your father and uncles. I had the same thought about my uncle, a pilot in the Pacific during WW II, may aunts, all nurse WAVES, rolling in their graves.

  • oowawa

I’m glad someone covered this latest genuflect, Rev. Amy. Thanks. I picture Obowma in the role of Deborah Kerr’s Anna groveling before Yul Bryner in The King and I–lower, lower, lowest yet! How low can you go, Mr. President?

  • lark

Obama bows to anyone who holds billions in American debt and is willing to lend us more money; and I think that is proper.

Obama bows now voluntarily and showing respect. Our grandchildren will bow later as compulsory and submissive.

  • oowawa

Does he do these things deliberately to piss us off?

Why, yes, Daisy Mae, I believe you’ve nailed it! If he dropped his drawers before the deep bow, he’d be showing us a little more graphically how he really feels about us.

  • mountainaires

Obama had to bow and scrape to the Japanese.

This was a calculated move to signal submissiveness in order to beg for goodwill from the new government; we’re in a pickle regarding our bases and their impact on the local community, for one thing.

There are other signs of rising nationalism amidst economic stresses. We want to signal our willingness to negotiate and work with the new government.

Geithner and the US may have been a “success” at kow-towing in Japan, but it apparently didn’t help them in China! Geithner tried to insert some language to force China to change it’s currency policy, but the Chinese rejected it, and worse, criticized US economic policies.

We have no power to do anything anymore but BEG, because we are the beggars to the world–Please keep buying our debt!

    This is breathtaking:

U.S. Treasury Confident Congress Will Increase Debt Ceiling

Nov. 13 (Bloomberg) — The Obama administration is confident Congress will raise the country’s debt limit by year end to avert a showdown similar to the one that shuttered parts of the government in 1995, administration officials said.

The White House wants an increase of at least $1 trillion to $1.5 trillion, according to a person familiar with the deliberations between lawmakers and the administration. Record budget deficits are pushing the national debt closer to the $12.1 trillion statutory limit.

Ouch! But, don’t expect a budget showdown, or even a public discussion about it. It’ll get done quietly, in the dead of night, probably. The Dems will call a vote at 3 a.m.! ;-)

“Debt ceiling showdowns used to be long, drawn-out affairs,” said Louis Crandall, chief economist at Wrightson ICAP in Jersey City, New Jersey. “Things come to a head much faster when your cash burn rate averages more than $100 billion a month.”

Got that? We’re burning cash at a rate of $100 Billion a month. No wonder we’re bowing and scraping around Asia.

It’s no surprise to anyone here that Ozero is completely out of his depth. Ignorant and proud of it. He has no respect for the office he holds or the people he represents.I don’t think it ever crosses his mind that he represents the people of the US, that he’s not there as Barack Obama, but as the President of the United States. To him, it seems, the title is a technicality that gives him access to the perks.

  • Unabashed Galt

I’ve come to the conclusion he is either a fucking idiot and/or is being medicated for being stressed out and not having the balls to handle the job he cheated and destroyed our freedoms to get.

The drugged out Obama remind me of “Führer John Gill,” from the Star Terk episode “Patterns of Force.

Obama had to bow and scrape to the Japanese.

He could have “bowed,” so to speak, in private. I disagree he had to in public — it only served to cost him more seats in the mid-term. America’s heart leans to the right and doesn’t bleed as it does towards the left.

  • Peggy Sue

You really have to wonder if this isn’t deliberate, Daisy Mae. Maybe he’s trying to prove to the American public that there’s no such as American exceptionalism. The Far Left really hates that notion anyway.

We want to be “loved” after all.

So, playing the weak, groveling sister routine, while waving our cup for more credit infusions from Asia may be absolutely intentional. Because if our “friends” pull the plug on our mammouth debt, Obama & Co.’s party is over.

I can’t tell you how much disgust I felt when I saw this picture. And it’s not like Obama & Co. doesn’t understand the importance of images.

I’m getting the sense that the whole purpose is to pummel the American public into numbness. Until we stop caring or paying attention. Then they can do whatever they like without the headache of dissent.

    Dangerous times!

  • felizarte

It is sickening! The Flag, symbol of the country is never lowered as it passes. The President of the U.S., symbol of the country abroad, DOES NOT bow down to other symbols of their country. This gesture (again) on Obama’s is more than dumb. I suppose, for a ditherer in chief, it is par for the course.

  • Onofre’s arm

Glad I’m not alone in that thought. Yes, I believe the bow(s) were an intentional nose flip, not at the Japanese, but at his detractors back home. It’s his petulant way of saying to us, “I can do whatever the Hell I please because I’m devine, and what are you going to do about it!”. This is typical Narcissistic behavior, the rules and customs don’t apply to them, they write their own rules. And oowawa, I would not be surprised at all if the level of his inapropriate behavior DOES eventually increase to the point of dropping his drawers. We’ve all seen him shamelessly flip the bird at Hillary and McCain, and that was BEFORE he held his power. He also caressed his package while others on stage held hands to their hearts for the National Anthem. Now that he holds power, one of the most enjoyable ways to flaunt it, is to engage in eccentric and bizarre activities. What does he care what we think, we’re not fit to lick his shoes.

The only inhibiting factor that might restrain him is his desire to be re-elected. It will be fun to watch his internal meltdown as the conflict between his personality disorder and his obsession for more power, rages within his increasingly medicated, chain smoking, deteriorating stick body.

    Someone sent me this email:

We were in slow-moving traffic the other day
and the car in front of us had an Obama bumper sticker on it.
It read: “Pray for Obama. Psalm 109:8″.

My husband’s Bible was lying on the dash board
& he got it & opened it up to the scripture & read it.
    He started laughing.
Then he read it to me.
I couldn’t believe what it said.
I had a good laugh, too.

Psalm 109:8 “Let his days be few; and let another take office.” KJV

  • HARP

Heads of state do not bow and show obeisance to one another, regardless of whether either one is an American President. The UConn group reviews 47 different greetings to Emperor Akihito and various heads of state, including a few from fellow Pacific Rim countries with similar cultural sensitivities, and doesn’t find a bow among them.

  • mountainaires

OT, but important. Good points, all, Amy. This is a criticism of media not you, but I just read this and wondered if anyone else was aware. Obama’s bow gets full play, but other things are happening we should know about. Like this:

Over the past two weeks, what appears to be a particularly virulent form of the flu has been spreading in Ukraine and adjacent Eastern European countries. This new flu is, in my opinion, a lethal new strain which has mutated (or was released). I speak with a background in virology. This new mutated flu virus appears to have a remarkable affinity for the lungs and is causing deaths to a much higher extent than the previous swine flu.

Something in the virus has changed. I have covered this incredibly important story for two weeks now in my weekly column This Week In Mayhem, which is generally published on Monday mornings.

Regardless, there has been almost zero (NOTHING. NADA. SILENCE.) mention of the Ukraine epidemic in the mainstream media, a fact which I find both astonishing and profoundly disturbing. There is apparently collusion at the highest levels of government and media to suppress this information. There are now 1.3 million infected in Ukraine, and over 75,000 hospitalized — IN FOURTEEN DAYS. This is very serious! Based on previous clinical data we can expect over 8,000 to be dead or soon to be dead. Forward projection of the epidemic is difficult because the clinical attack rate is unknown — but myself and my associates remain concerned it may be quite high. Deaths globally may be in the millions. Let’s hope this is not the case.

The new flu strain, which I contend is spreading in Ukraine and Belarus, is characterized by a lightning form of viral pneumonia — very similar to what happened in 1918. The new flu virus appears to have profound tissue affinity for sialic acid receptors deep in the lungs, replicating in the alveoli. To put it mildly, the lungs fill with blood. Quotes from Ukrainian officials included quotes such as “total destruction of the lungs.”

Ukrainian Doctor Viktor Bachinsky has stated, “The virus causing the deaths is extremely aggressive — it doesn’t first infect the throat (as is common in flu), but strikes the lungs directly.”

In Ukraine’s western Chernovetsky region, an epicenter of the outbreak, doctors have said lab tests showed at least some of the fatalties appeared to be caused by a flu dissimilar to both common flu and swine flu. In other words, a mutant flu. This claim of a ‘mutant flu’ has been echoed by Ukrainian public health officials such as Dr. Vasyl Lazoryshynetz. Unfortunately, as noted in the above Russia Today video, pharmacies across the country are sold out of antivirals. To the hard of thinking — yes, this is currently happening in Ukraine.

I have multiple sources confirming spot outbreaks of viral pneumonia in Eastern Europe, including official and non-official entities. In terms of the current situation, there appear to be a high number of pneumonia patients in Ukrainian and Belerusian hospitals. This epidemic has not shut down Ukrainian society yet, but it has caused many people to become concerned, and to buy up essential medicines. Reports from doctors in Belarus indicate they do not expect this deadly new flu epidemic to peak until Christmas or later. This is why it is important to analyze the situation and viral genetics now, and if necessary, contain the spread of the virus while it is still possible — something the criminals at WHO do not appear interested in doing. These idiots at WHO have yet to release the viral gene sequences (even though they have had them for two weeks), and are now outright lying in their press releases, which I detail later. In terms of how dangerous this new flu strain could potentially be, I conducted a rough analysis of the Ukrainian government statistics, yielding a projected case fatality rate (CFR) of 0.61% — over six times as lethal as seasonal flu.

Lastly, there are signs the virus is genetic engineered.

  • Prime Obot

Yes, that’s it. Obama behaves with tremendous respect toward foreign leaders in order to “pummel the American public into numbness.” It’s not, for instance, to send a signal to the world that America once again wishes to be a respectful member of the global community, after eight years of mindless, arrogant, heedless, jingoistic, militaristic Bush-era machismo. No, that couldn’t be it. Obama offers the occasional bow because he hates America and wants to torture Americans.

I cannot get enough of NQ. But Rev. Amy: what on earth are you doing here?

  • Prime Obot

When will Obama implode? The answer to that, I believe, will be “Never.”

  • Peggy Sue

You and my father-in-law might have an interesting conversation, PO. He’s in his 80s now and served in the South Pacific. Came home wounded and with malaria. Talk to him about this bow, this “moment of respect.”

    Talk if you dare!

And my father? He fought at Okinawa. I’m sure he would have appreciated this example of “tremendous respect,” which oddly no other world leader felt compelled to match.

Btw, there’s respect, and then there’s humiliating groveling, bowing like a servant. The President would do well to understand the difference!

Oh, and just as a reminder: Bush & Co. are no longer in office. Yes, they were bad. But the Dems are proving they’re just as incompetent.

  • Galt goes to Hollywood

But the Dems are proving they’re just as incompetent.

I think the Dems are proving to be far worse than incompetent, more a threat to our very liberty. :(

  • Obama: Dubya 2 Electric Boogaloo

LOL!! I have GOT to remember that one!

  • FembotsForObama

NO. What it really shows is that OBAMA IS BASICALLY AN IDIOT!

Basic Japanese bowing protocol, you NEVER bow lower than the other person unless that person is a SUPERIOR.

Which is why Nixon’s bow, as POTUS, was at an appropriate level because it was matched by the Emperor. As POTUS, Clinton’s near bow or start of a bow was slight, and could be arguably akin to Nixon’s. Hillary’s bow in 2000 was acceptable because she wasn’t the POTUS. Even Jackie Kennedy (and JFK) knew you don’t bow to heads of state when you hold the office of POTUS.

Obama’s lower than the Emperor’s bow showed supplication (as far as the Japanese are concerned). There is no argument about that! Much like his bow (and I agree with Amy, near genuflection) to the Saudi King was an act of supplication.

Obama majored in Poli Sci, not history, so he must have missed the whole Americans not bowing to Kings or Royalty part.

Or, its something else…. perhaps Obama really doesn’t believe that he is their equal.

  • FembotsForObama

IMO, Amy that you post the pictures of the bows, especially the one to the Saudi KIng, because it removes any doubt that Obama bowed, and you get a clear picture that he nearly was on bended knee.

  • Peggy Sue

    Agreed, Galt.

And now you’re in Hollywood?? I can’t keep up with these monikers :0).

  • oowawa

Yep Onofre’s arm. There are two sides to a bow. The exalted personage receiving the bow sees the bower in a subservient and submissive position. The rest of the world, seeing the backside of the bow, not only beholds the bower’s subservience and submission, but also sees a big bunch of butt on top of two legs, and nothing above that.

  • vera walker Plainfield NJ

you put him in office.Find a way to get him out or just learn how to live with it.This talk is just talk and will get us no where. You tried to inpeach Bill Clinton well make it work this time and get Obama OUT!!!!!!!!!.

  • http://! stodgie

look obama and that michelle woman run around like country bumpkins showing their stupidity and arrogance for the world to see. they insult the queen of england in so many ways i don’t have time to count. they insult brown on a visit here. the fact is they insult everyone they come in contact with on the diplomatic front. fact it! obama is a dufus with an ego we won’t see again in our lifetime.

  • Mandelay

Thanks so much for such terrific film of SOS Hillary. She has mastered the body language of diplomacy and presents herself as a role model for any and all world leaders. And few can keep up with her in the brains department. Wonderful images. Hope she’s named/elected head of the U.N. one day.

As for POTUS, maybe we’re looking at this from the wrong end? I’ve been looking at the bow but actually, he might not be bowing so much as he is presenting his rear end. Is he “mooning” the world? … or telling the world it’s ok to do something to US? Well, if he’s bowing, he needs to study SOS Hillary’s bow from the shoulders up when it comes to facing other heads of state.

  • sybilll

I am convinced Kanye West is in charge of Obama’s protocol.

Good image oowawa! This is the proper perspective to view Obama. A large ass balanced on two beanpoles, little else.

  • FrenchNail

    Lesson in protocol (repeat).

    A) you do not touch royalty! As you do not shake Queen Elizabeth’s hand. Or Emperor Akihito’s hand

    B) Heads of state do not bow to each others. As you do not bow to the King of Saudi Arabia, or to the (only) Russia Prime Minister Putin (Yeh RRRA you missed that one!!!!)or the Emperor of Japan. However, You may bow your head briefly in sign of respect.

  • Texas Playwright

Sec. Clinton and the Empress of Japan greeting each other was so graceful. Such warmth and class by both lovely ladies.

Another nice visual to brighten my day, R3 Amy. You rock!

  • Onofre’s arm

You sound remarkably like Baghdad Bob.

  • Mandelay

Yes, I agree. When I think of these women … Clinton, Merkel, etc., and not to leave out Elizabeth II who has really seen it all … and then I look at some of the “boys club” running so much of the show, I cannot fathom why the citizens of the world put up with this crap. There are so many mediocrities in power … and so much talent kept out of the top spots. Obama is a classic example of a mediocrity, and in this world, he gets a Nobel prize for “peace.” Mediocrity is more like it. It shows when you “go to the videotape” and compare him to Clinton. What a shame. What a missed opportunity for the nation.

  • b mathews

anyone notice that obama is now looking to blame the army for the ft hood massacre. he keeps talking about finding out who is responsible(that is..anyone but the shooter)seems obvious to me that he is all about protecting the muslims. very telling.

  • candymarl

“We” didn’t try to impeach Bill Clinton. The opposition party did. Obama has a Democratic House and Senate. For either of those bodies to impeach they would first have to admit they made a mistake. They’ll never do that.

  • hc123

Can I stop my payment to the protocol office yet? Does Obama not know he has one? Or is he too omnipotent to listen to advice?

I am waiting for the bots to come in to “splain” to us how this is acceptable. Come on FF, Prime O, James Guielgilmeo, UBM and the rest – enlighten us.

I am betting the best they can muster is the “much ado about nothing” defense.

  • barry bums a ciggie

He can’t himself. Ater all, when he did his trip to Europe in the summer of 2008 he was declared prezident of the world, remember? Now that his approval ratings have slid down to below 50% in America he’s not feeling the love anymore so naturally he has to suck up to other countries by groveling and talking about Green Tea ice-cream so that the adoration doesn’t stop. A shout out to our prez: Yo, Barrack! Waddup foo!

  • tek

UG: my first thought! He always overplays his role, like the fake marble columns, etc. Of course, he gets all wee weed up to show foreign leaders that the U. S. is anxious to bow down to whatever they want.

When Obama bows to he is sticking his but in our faces and he knows it and enjoys it. When he gave a “shout out” before expressing grief and outrage over the Ft. Hood murders he was giving all of us the finger, he does that on a regular basis one way or another.

He is not stupid he hates us.

What I like better than the bow was his speech to China about how they shouldn’t have a censored society, like we have a real transparent government since he got in office! Every single thing he lectures other countries on, his administration is doing to this country in spades. Love all the conditions Afghanistan has to agree to; they have to prove there isn’t corruption in elections, etc. Oh, to have a Congress and president in the U. S. that would hold our own government to those standards.

I am quite taken with how blatantly Obama and his handlers lie to the American people.
I find it hard to believe that they actually think that by denying that there is a protocol for not bowing to other heads of state, that we will buy that. They really, truly think of us as idiots whom they can manipulate at will, when the truth seems to be that they are both idiots and simplemindedly immature. They are willing to try absolutely anything to explain away their mistakes and faux pas. Won’t work anymore.

  • tek

When Bush was in, he borrowed 2 billion a day from China to fund the war in Iraq. These people own us.

  • Prime Obot

I would very much enjoy talking to your father and grandfather. I honor their service and would love to hear whose administration they believe has more defiled American ideals: Obama’s, which has helped to forestall a Depression that your grandfather would have remembered quite well (I don’t think most Americans his age hated FDR, though some certainly did), or Bush, who used the “war on terror” to trample on some of our most basic individual freedoms, like equal treatment under the law and protection from search and seizure.

Please believe me when I say that my background, experiences, personal beliefs and core knowledge base do not lend themselves to being easily intimidated by flag-waving rejoinders such as yours. I know many people from the WWII generation, and I know what they believe and care about. First and foremost, they watched FDR’s “government spending” save this country; in many cases, FDR’s programs saved their very families. And anyone who served knows which ideals of individual freedom they served in order to protect. And somehow I suspect that, just maybe, the average World War II veteran might be more concerned about the federal government suspending habeas corpus and torturing prisoners of war than they would by an American president bowing politely to foreign dignitaries.

  • jwrjr

Good question. Except for the trolls, one would have a hard time finding any regular commenter at this website who voted for the Groveller-in-Chief.

  • Prime Obot

I’m here because I love politics and I enjoy this particular community, in part because I find the general views espoused here so utterly bizarre and nonsensical, in part because there’s just a lot of passion and caring and people really engage each other. Certainly I don’t mind being such a lonely voice here, the insults are just entertainment value, and I enjoy the debate. I just think it’s a cool site. My comment about Rev. Amy is simple: she seems genuinely smart, fairly knowledgeable and truly progressive. So I just cannot understand, at a time when this White House and the Democratic Congress are desperately fighting to keep the economy afloat, save thousands of lives by passing a public health care plan, deal with multiple wars, climate change, and on and on, how any true progressive voice could concern herself with a freaking bow to a foreign leader. It makes no sense. And since I respect Rev. Amy a lot, I’d really like to hear her explain her own priorities.

  • brodie

In Japanese society, how low one bows to another is known to everyone. You bow very low only to your superior, period. Another world leader would never be considered your superior, only your equal. Hillary was exactly right. A polite nod was sufficient and the proper protocol. You can never get “brownie points” in Japan by doing this, you only invite the disdain of the entire populace.

  • Smart Blonde

he has bowed to two non-white men [saudi king, japanese emperor] and one white man [putin, who is not royalty.]

when he met a white woman who has been queen of her country and its colonies since 1953, he did not bow. queen elizabeth was gracious as usual, especially kind since as i recall he gave her an ipod with his speeches on it. such an ego!

i think barry has some serious issues regarding women.

  • mountainaires

He could have “bowed” so to speak in private.

Yes, but it wouldn’t have meant anything to the Japanese public, then, would it?

This was meant to send a message to Asians, not Americans. Obama did it because he had to do it. We need the Japanese to maintain a strong alliance with us, at the very time they are considering strengthening their trade, and relationships in Asia [China].

THIS IS A BIT OT BUT I AM CONVINCED THAT THIS WHOLE HEALTHCARE REFORM IS JUST A DISTRACTION FOR THE BILLS OBAMA IS PASSING IN THE DEAD OF NITE BEHIND CLOSED DOORS. WHILE WE ARE BUSY PROTESTING OBAMACARE, HE AND HIS CRONIES ARE BUSY GIVING AWAY THE FARM. THEY HAD TO HAVE KNOWN THAT MANY PEOPLE WOULD BE UP IN ARMS ABOUT THIS UTTERLY RIDICULOUS HC BILL AND WOULDNT BE PAYING MUCH ATTENTION TO WHAT THE OTHER HAND IS DOING. WHEN THIS HC FIASCO IS FINALLY OVER, FOLKS WILL WAKE UP TO FIND THE DEMS HAVE PASSED BILLS THAT ARE NOT IN THE BEST INTEREST OF THE U.S.. UNFORTUNATELY BY THEN IT WILL BE TOO LATE. I HAVE HEARD THAT BILLS HAVE BEEN PASSED IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NITE THAT WOULD MAKE YOUR SKIN CRAWL.

Galt, Galt, Galt, how many times must I say that you cannot use language like that here. The Spam Filter does NOT like the use of the word “i.d.i.o.t.” in any variation! :-)

  • http://www.rabblerouserruminations.blogspot.com/ Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy

    Well said, Onofre.

Lark, I disagree – world leaders do not bow in a subservient manner to other world leaders. Even if he was bowing to be “polite,” he would not bow in such a manner. It is inappropriate at the very least. You will note that not once did the Emperor and Empress bow anything like that.

As I said, if you want to see the proper protocol for showing respect in another country, watch how Hillary Clinton does it. She does not scrape and bow to anyone, yet manages to convey a tremendous amt of respect.

Obama acts not like the head of state, but as a servant (and I don’t mean in a “servant’s heart” kind of way). That is singularly inappropriate at his level.

  • http://www.rabblerouserruminations.blogspot.com/ Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy

Lol abt what Obama is showing the world, Mandelay. Good one!

And EXCELLENT point abt the women running countries v. the men who run countries. When you see how Hillary conducts herself, there is no wonder at all why Obama and his Administration try to put her down, or “leak” their dissatisfaction with her – she can run RINGS around these people and how to conduct oneself at home and abroad. They know it. She would never put her hand and arm around the Queen of England, for instance, or give a bunch of dvds as a Gift of State (which is mandated by LAW) anyway, much less in the wrong format, and to someone losing his vision.

    Pitiful, just pitiful.

Quite right, FrenchNail – it just wasn’t as egregious as his curtsy – oops – genuflect to the Saudi King, or his 90 degree bow to the Emperor and Empress. But yes, he does indeed bow his head to Putin.

    Sigh.

    Sybill, that was hilarious!

    And thanks, TX Playwright! :-)

  • Docelder

He was probably just bending down to look the emperor in the eyes. Right. He either has no respect for the office he holds… and I can’t say I blame him at this point, I am losing my respect for it as well… or, it’s that George and Weezy have just moved into the White House and they don’t know any better. It is one or the other. Plus, nobody on his staff must have any respect for the office or any common sense either. Seems like either one of the two would have averted this fiasco. But no.

  • Docelder

I have the winning campaign slogan for 2012. “I will bow to no man”. Here’s to Sarah Palin saying it. It would hit harder coming from a woman candidate.

  • FLDemFem

You need to get an education, soon. If you want to know what is going on in Congress, in detail, go to the Congressional Record and see.
    http://www.gpoaccess.gov/crecord/

And don’t start with how there is a conspiracy in DC to keep things out of the CR, it couldn’t happen. Too many flapping lips would have to be involved and it would leak like a sieve. If you want to know about middle of the night votes, check the Record, all activity on the floors of both the House and the Senate, speeches, votes, things read into the record, etc. are recorded daily. Go look. Bye now!!

  • Prime Obot

As always, you are all so clever.
And I just sigh and type “whatever”

  • http://firefox AnnieCarmel

Guess that explains why Meshill never accompanies him on the bow fests. Can you imagine?

He goes as a beggar, hat in hand, professing how sorry he is for the crimes committed since 1492bo by this terrible country. Next he’ll be asking the Saudi’s forgiveness for getting ourselves attacked on 9/11…as his blind followers do now.

  • IndianaDem

In Japan, so far as protocol and national symbolism go, no one is superior to the emperor.

Obama screwed up the form of the bow, however, by bending at the waist, looking at the floor, and weirdly combining it with a simultaneous handshake. Nixon had the form right when he bowed to Emperor Hirohito:

I must have seen a different clip, then, FrenchNail. The video I saw showed him just bowing his head. Lemme go see what else I can find…Nope, this is all: http://atlasshrugs2000.typepad.com/.a/6a00d8341c60bf53ef011571dc36c3970b-popup

  • http://firefox AnnieCarmel

Yes, as in the slight nod is enough.

Benjamin Franklin, loved by the French, nevertheless did not bow to their king. Can you imagine Washington, Adams or any of the founding fathers, after they fought and sacrificed for independence from the monarchy bowing to anyone? No. We don’t do that. It’s as American as Old Glory and Apple Pie. These are the things he does to show us how hateful and alienated he is from the country who cuts his paycheck. He hasn’t earned it but he is supposed to pretend to be the President. Someone in the State Department needs to give him cheat sheets before he travels so he knows what is universally considered dignified behavior and basic good manners. That would include good manners in how he represents us.

But of course, the founders were (gasp) White. That in itself is enough to dismiss them in 0zer0′s racist eyes.

  • Peggy Sue

You’re quite right PO, my father-in-law, father and uncles and grandparents all remember the war and the Great Depression. The opinion was mixed on FDR but my father-in-law admired FDR, thought he had guts.

But he also thinks Obama is a gutless wonder. As do I.

And btw, the attitude expressed here at NQ is not isolated. The Los Angeles Times and Jake Tapper as well as a number of other media outlets have commented on the gaffe, which is why, I suspect, you’re here defending Obama. Here’s a quote from Tapper’s article:

“Obama’s handshake/forward lurch was so jarring and inappropriate it recalls Bush’s back-rub of Merkel.

“Kyodo News is running his appropriate and reciprocated nod and shake with the Empress, certainly to show the president as dignified, and not in the form of a first year English teacher trying to impress with Karate Kid-level knowledge of Japanese customs.

“The bow as he performed did not just display weakness in Red State terms, but evoked weakness in Japanese terms….The last thing the Japanese want or need is a weak looking American president and, again, in all ways, he unintentionally played that part.”

Tapper prefaces this by stating that both the Right and Left have this wrong.

    1. The bow was not unprecedented,
    2. Nor was it a sign of cultural understanding.

As for the “flag-waving rejoiners,” that was once known as love of country and admiration of the men and women who have sacrificed for her.

The President showed neither with this embarrassing display. So when you get tired of playing here, you can mosey over to the other media outlets who have expressed equal dismay at another Obama foul up. Enjoy!

  • http://firefox AnnieCarmel

The epitome of good manners and first rule: never make the other person uncomfortable; therefore Queen Elizabeth and the Emperor pretended not to notice…seamlessly aware of what is required, to make the other person and their comfort their prime concern. This is the mark of a generous, cultured person. Not so, Mr. Clueless. He would have shown his good manners had he behaved in a manner that not didn’t make them have to pretend.

Same thing as when Meshill put her arm around the Queen. QE, extended herself to make the uneducated, ill mannered FLOTUS feel acceptable in polite company. They definitely practice a double standard to leaders they consider “people of color”, almost licking their feet.

  • http://firefox AnnieCarmel

He really is cringe worthy. It makes me wonder whether he belches at table or passes gas in public?

You know, in the 60′s when we threw conventional behavior out, many of us, after about 5 minutes did decide that there was a reason for thinking of another persons comfort first; a reason for knowing which fork to use and while we may have relaxed a few rules, the basics stick when you are taught them as children. Seems obvious he was raised with the Red Guard Little Book of Rules.

I read this last night, mountainaires, and did a bit of poking around this morning. Although I’ve felt a lot of the H1N1 hype was just that, hype, these reports coming out of the Ukraine are truly disturbing.

This “super-bug” causes hemorrhagic pneumonia and kills very, very quickly. There’s some reporting involving Baxter Pharmaceuticals and inquiries whether this strain was genetically engineered as a bioweapon.

Not much press time given to the story here. Most of the stories I’ve been picking up are foreign outlets.

    Scary stuff!

  • Doc99

Rev, the NY Times gave Bill Clinton Holy Hell for almost bowing. And now from the Slimes, we hear … crickets.

  • kgirl1028

Truthfully I have no problem with the fact Obama bowed. I took Japanese Stuidies in high school, bows in Japan are like our hand shakes, But from this picture, Obama is A. he’s doing so incorrectly with his bow shake when he should have done so with both hands at his side and from the waste, and he is doing a gossly subservant bow. He and the emperor are equals his bow should be no lower than his, and i would have given him and i would have thrown in an inch for good measure lower because the emperor is older than he is. This is obama’s attempt to make himself look so much cultrally senssative than most presidents, and ends up look like an ass. My willingness to give him an inch come from some closeted need to semi like our president, but there is nothing likable or remotely smart about this man. He is mentally lazy, it almost like he think he deserves applause for simply being who he is, and the media and his followers have made it worse by not smacking the hell out of with reality when he does something stupid and insensative, and over the next 3 years it only going to get worse. Head of state is what Obama seems to want to be more than the head of an executive branch that makes decision. Is it too much to ask that he at least do that well? and quit it with the ghettofabulous gifts, the shout outs in times of crisis, and actling like the dictators of the world’s butt boy. Hell can we just let Michelle be president? Cause we need one, and who the hell wants Joe Biden?

  • http://firefox AnnieCarmel

Since I wouldn’t slime myself by reading any of DK’s dreck, I hope you aren’t promoting the idea that Eisenhower bowed to Hirohito? Or MacArthur…(he did not). If Eisenhower, after WWII, gave a semblance of a “bow” to De Gaulle, it was as warriors, comrades-in-arms and out of respect to an equal. Not as President of the US.

You see, PO, it’s all in the little details, the little subtle details that it becomes oh so important to a nation, such as Japan, where every citizen is brought up with the understanding of the intricate nature and meaning of appearances and social graces. Perhaps you could ask someone close to you to take classes and learn how to perform the Japanese Tea Ceremony. Maybe then you’d get a clue. It’s about understanding and honoring the culture of your host and not appearing to be an uncouth cretin. He owes us that much merely picking up his paycheck every month.

There’s a poster there claiming he/she is in the Ukraine at the moment and that the incoming reports are sheer propaganda intended to influence the upcoming elections. Slightly off topic but noteworthy, Governor Patterson of New York ripped Obama over the idea of terrorist trials in NYC:

Gov. David Paterson openly criticized the White House on Monday, saying he thought it was a terrible idea to move alleged 9/11 mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and four other suspected terrorists to New York for trial.

“This is not a decision that I would have made. I think terrorism isn’t just attack, it’s anxiety and I think you feel the anxiety and frustration of New Yorkers who took the bullet for the rest of the country,” he said.

They are essentially saying that US Conservatives are asserting that. But from what I can ascertain on the blogs, it is fairly widespread there as a perception, and growing. Yes, yesterday, I heard one of the flu “experts” from the communicable disease department say that thankfully, there have not been any mutations world wide. Still, I have gotten both seasonal and H1N1 vaccinations and 10 years ago got the life time pneumonia shot which covers about 60 strains…beyond that? It must be karmic!

But hey, I worked for physicians for many years and I get any and all of whatever help they offer. Think of what the world would look like if everyone had been scared to death of the polio or smallpox vaccine…I love medicine and if I need a pain pill I’ll damn well take it. I watched that speech. He drifted into the role of women around the world and seemed to confuse China with Japan. Chinese women are pretty equal (it IS a Communist country). They are nothing like in the position of Japanese women.
And yet he praised China for having courses at the university which are filled by more women than men. And he added condescendingly “and I hear they’re doing pretty well”.
    What a maroon!

  • jwrjr

As I understand it, the “bow” means one of two things: A – Obama can’t be bothered to learn proper etiquette between Heads of State, which is insulting. Or B – he knows proper etiquette and chose not to follow it, which is insulting. There is little doubt that the Japanese citizens look at Odumbo and thing “Gaijin”.

  • Ellen D

You just refuse to understand. It was not polite to not respect their culture or manners.

My family loved FDR and his policies saved many during the depression. My father joined the CCC as a young man, working to build the national parks. But the problems were different then and those solutions aren’t necessarily the ones we need now. Even so…how many federal work programs has 0zer0 created to put people who have exhausted UI benefits back to work? FDR put them to work building the parks, roadways and dams. It’s not the same world.

My WWII uncles would have despised his subservient attitude toward any world leader. They wouldn’t ever drive a foreign car; lectured me just as sternly when I bought a VW bug as my Sabra boyfriend did. German industrialists were not on their most favored list any more than the Japanese were.

  • Prime Obot

Oh, I can do much better than that. I was talking today to my Chinese friend (a young woman who spent most of her life in China, only made it to California a few years ago, and now does a lot of translating for U.S. businesses wanting to launch Chinese websites). She laughed when I asked her about the “bow.” What she said was, nobody in Asia could care less about anything that “official” — that’s all just governmental protocol and the people consider that all rigged and meaningless. What is HUGE, she said, was Obama’s town hall meeting with Chinese college students. She says it is astonishing that the government allowed it all, doubly astonishing that at least some ordinary Chinese were allowed to see it, and also shocking to ordinary Chinese that a U.S. president was hanging out, speaking uncensored, with everyday Chinese citizens.

Bottom line, my friend, like virtually all the non-Americans I know, absolutely adores Obama and believes with all her heart that the face of America he is presenting to the world is immensely valuable and will change America’s relationship with the world forever. She also believes that this one event — the college town hall — is very important to interior Chinese politics.

Make of it what you will. I think that with this nonsense about the bow you are all missing the real story, as usual. When your online discussions are parroting what the talking heads are saying on Fox News, you should be clued in that you are falling for propaganda and missing reality.

  • lightacandle

Obama said he would like to visit the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

Maybe he would also like to visit the trail of the Bataan Death March where the Japanese slaughtered so many American prisoners.

Beheadings, cut throats and casual shootings were the more common actions — compared to bayonet stabbings, rapes, disembowelments, numerous rifle butt beatings and a deliberate refusal to allow the prisoners food or water while keeping them continually marching for nearly a week in tropical heat. Falling down or inability to continue moving was tantamount to a death sentence, as was any degree of protest or expression of displeasure.

Prisoners were attacked for assisting someone failing due to weakness, or for no apparent reason whatsoever. Strings of Japanese trucks were known to drive over anyone who fell. Riders in vehicles would casually stick out a rifle bayonet and cut a string of throats in the lines of men marching alongside the road. Accounts of being forcibly marched for five to six days with no food and a single sip of water are in postwar archives including filmed reports.

The exact death count has been impossible to determine, but some historians have placed the minimum death toll between six and eleven thousand men; whereas other postwar Allied reports have tabulated that only 54,000 of the 72,000 prisoners reached their destination– taken together, the figures document a casual killing rate of one in four up to two in seven (25% to 28.6%) of those brutalized by the forcible march. The number of deaths that took place in the internment camps from delayed effects of the march is uncertain, but believed to be high.

I watched the whole thing Annie. Obama can talk for hours and say absolutely NOTHING! Nothing memorable, nothing quotable, nothing insightful, and nothing informative. Reading a transcript of it could probably infect someone with chronic narcolepsy. My teenagers were watching it with me, and we found ourselves constantly looking quizzically at each other wondering, “What the Hell is he trying to say?”

Last night’s Q&A also took on an ever more familiar form that will eventually cause universal eye rolling in all but the most pathetically ignorant bots (that’s you botfly). He managed to turn every one of his answers into a discussion of his favorite subject, himself. If there were a drinking game where everytime Obama says “I” or “me”, players are required to take a shot, before he could get halfway through his first answer, the players would have to be rushed to the ER to have their stomachs pumped. Even my twelve year old was howling with laughter when he started recognizing Obama’s obsessive referrencing to himself. Obama makes Narcissus seem demure.

A week or so ago, at http://deweyfromdetroit.com there was a fascinating 2 day blog about Detroit and the downward spiral of this American city.

Included were pictures of Nagasaki and Hiroshima after the bombing and how after they were rebuilt with American dollars into vibrant cities; spectacular night time pictures. In stark contrast, pictures of the footprint of bustling Detroit before and during the war, followed by the burned out shell that is much of Detroit today. Hmmm, what’s wrong with this picture?

btw, lightacandle, 0zer0 would probably find a way to “Opologize” for the American soldiers presence on Bataan, making it necessary for the Japanese to insist that they march. I have no faith in his patriotism in any scenario.

  • NomNomNom

thank you. enough of my relatives fought in WW2 that I could give a flying f#ck what any japanese thinks of BHO and his ugly bow.

  • CentralMass

One could argue that Nixon should have kicked Hirohito squarely in the balls and that Eisenhower bowing to De Gaulle was unnecessary. Yet there willingness to do so added to their prowess as statesmen. Does Obama have the the cache or stature to not pay other world leaders a measure of respect when dealing with them? What would he gain by not doing so?

  • Onofre’s arm

Maybe Annie just doesn’t believe you have a friend. Having read most of your bile, I find it difficult to believe. Did you meet this alleged friend at the major pumpkin patch? I could almost buy off on that scenario, since anyone who went to a major pumpkin patch must have been out of their gourds.

Yes, Prime O is boring. He went for the “much ado about nothing”. zzzz, absolutely no creativity with this one.

Nothing in China is “uncensored”, you make yourself (and your friend from California, who speaks for all Chinese) ridiculous.

I am a recent immigrant myself, and most of my family lives abroad. Most of them do not in fact love The Obama. So I speak for all Muslims abroad when I say we think Obama is a joke.

  • rosa

I got a quick look at MSNBC this morning and that Odonnell was comparing what OB did bowing as not so important, BUT according to him, if you compare it to what Hillary said in China about womens and childrens rights not going to hinder the process is a much more serious gaffe with consequences!! Always, always they have to attack her when Obama makes a huge mistake!! It is embarrassing because its like middle school but they are on the most important cable network around!!HA

  • Prime Obot

International public opinion polls bear out my assertions, not yours; Obama is extremely popular internationally. As for China: if you really believe that in 2009, “nothing in China is uncensored,” you are deeply ignorant. A lot in China is now uncensored; anything controversial, however, could be censored, and anything explicitly political will almost certainly be censored, and if it’s sufficiently anti-Communist, the author or speaker is quite certainly risking prison. Compared to the early decades of the Communist revolution, though, there is far, far more freedom in that country, of expression, association and commerce.

  • TeakWoodKite

I really enjoyed the fact BO told the Chinese to have an open internet. Mean while back in the USA…(like google earth; the camera pans in on a major pumkin patch)…..

  • Donna Brazile

    Prime OButt:

Well, I asked my chinese sister-in-law about the bow and she said the lower the bow the more apologetic the person is.

What y’all don’t realize is what a compliment PO is giving to me, PO being a Red Sox fan and me being a Yankee fan – it’s high praise indeed! :-)

Thanks for the compliments, PO. And thanks, friends, for having my back. Yet another reason why I love being a part of the NQ community – it is an honor to me that Larry allows me to write here. I had been aware of him even before I found this site supporting the best candidate for president in my voting lifetime. That, of course, would be Hillary. Hence why I am here and continue to stay here.

Or as I imagine Obama would say, these are my peeps! :-D

You know, PO, it would be great if everything was as black/white as you laid out. The health care reform issue is enormously complex, and problematic. It is impossible for a 1,000+ page bill to not contain all kinds of issues, earmarks, unrelated items, etc., etc. And the ones proposed thus far have HUGE issues, not the least of which include cutting back on health care for senior citizens in a big way, and the tremendous cost which this country can ill afford at this juncture. Even Dennis Kucinich is opposed to the bill that passed.

I do write abt these things, just not the same thing everyday. I probably COULD write abt health care reform every day, but I think I can speak for everyone when I say that would be tedious and boring as hell.

As for Obama bowing, it is not insignificant, and it is not isolated. It is a pattern, and it speaks poorly abt Obama, his leadership (or lack thereof), his seeming subservience to other world leaders, and what that says abt him/us. IOW, it is not as simple as a bow.

The answer is simple – watch the videos of Obama, and the one of Hillary. That pretty much sums it up – one should have been president, and would have been a great president. The other is woefully unprepared for the job.

    Thanks for asking, PO.

I find as many redirect proxy servers being used in the K-12 as I do emulating from China.

A lot in China the United States is now uncensored; anything controversial, however, could be censored, (MSM)) and anything explicitly political will almost certainly be censored (BO’s past), and if it’s sufficiently anti-Communist, the author or speaker is quite certainly risking prison. (Sinclair ring any bells?) Compared to the early decades of the Communist revolution (read Ayers, BO, his parents and freaky Frank,) though, there is far, far more freedom in that country, of expression, association and commerce.

    2. he probably stacked the audience and knew the questions beforehand (he did)

as far as the bow goes, an asian acquaintance said that when you bow low, it is seen as weakness, and when you bow so low, it is actually characterized as a ‘servant’s bow.’ (her words) you are also not supposed to bow and shake hands at the same time.

funny, i could have guessed that prime came from california. that state grows some strange fruit.

Jackarooty – after Joe said those nice remarks about Hillary this morning, how did Meka react? When I used to watch Morning Joe (before banning Morning Joe in March 2008), Meka was so drunk on the 0bama kool-aid she could hardly contain herself. She was cold as ice when HRC’s name came up or was on the program. Her preference was plain as day.

Meka always felt the need to ‘disclose’ that her Carter Admin father (Brezenski) was a foreign policy advisor to B0 and her brother had a senior role in B0′s campaign. She might as well have declared herself a supporter along with her family and like Donna Brazile, SC Rep James Clyburn, Nancy Pelosi, Rahm Emanuel and others should have done. Instead, they all campaigned for the jerk under the banner of ‘uncommitted’.

  • http://firefox AnnieCarmel

    http://www.theonion.com/content/video/obamas_home_teleprompter

The Onion rarely disappoints. Gave me my first big laugh today.

  • FranSC

It’s the incongruity of B0′s waist bow to the Saudi King and now the Japanese Emperor vs 0′s not feeling the need to wear an American Flag pin, putting his hand over his heart during the Pledge of Allegiance or while the National Anthem is being played or sung because he thinks it is unnecessary to ‘wrap himself in the American Flag’ to show his patriotism.

Why is he so willing to make these very unAmerican gestures of subservience to the extreme in foreign countries, particularly those with royalty? He seems to be most impressed with THAT kind of symbolism.

Tonight I heard that none of the Japanese newspapers were publishing this bow pic because it was considered a humiliating gesture for a leader of such a powerful country as the US and an embarrassment to 0bama personally. I suppose you could say they are protecting him from himself.

This man is tone deaf and doesn’t have a clue about protocol, manners or common sense. But, in truth, I don’t think he gives a flying f*** about those things. He is determined to stick to his ideology no matter what.

  • sandra

This is so typical of the obama haters and republicans-he is being subservient! what a joke! I lived in Japan for 23 years, am married to a Japanese and will tell you right now, obama’s bow was entirely acceptable. and those were not Jack Tapper’s words – he was displaying another reporters message.
hillary is very good friends with the Emporers wife-i have read about it. they both admire each other greatly. she was greeting a friend from her white house days and thus did not show the bow of a first time meeting.

you don’t have to write about policy every day, but you don’t have to spin everything the president does or spread your opinion as being fact either. especially when it obviously comes from your hatred of the man and his family. and why does everything have to come back to Hillary?? please prove to me that Hillary would have done things differently or any better – you seem to insist that she would be a better president – exactly how do you know this?? you don’t – i’ll say it again, get over it.

Not true. Up to date studies have shown that the virus in the Ukraine is NOT any more virulent than other places. And the figures when compared to other countries showed no significant differences. What has happened is that seriously sick people were waiting too long to get treatment.

  • Docelder

You can see the Ukraine news clips on youtube and see their news in an English version. Our national media is not anywhere near a reliable source right now. That flu has infected over two hundred thousand people in just over two weeks. Yes, people have tested positive for regular H1N1, but H1N1 is pretty much everywhere now so why wouldn’t they test positive for it? Then there was that Israeli guy arrested a few months ago who was saying there was a bio-weapon being prepared in the Ukraine. Who knows? But you can search youtube for “pneumonic plague Ukraine” or “aerial spraying Ukraine”. There is some really weird and unsettling reports coming from there right now.

  • Portia Elizabeth

    Yes, foreign devil indeed.
I’m guessing the Japanese look on him as an arrogant fool.

  • Docelder

A DEADLY plague could sweep across Europe, doctors fear, after an outbreak of a virus in Ukraine plunged the country and its neighbours into a state of panic.

    http://www.express.co.uk/posts/view/140492/Million-hit-by-plague-worse-than-swine-flu-

Not – the swine flu, not H1N1. Likely a manufactured virus.

My first impression was that it made the Emperor look uncomfortable. So again, in his selfish eagerness to show everyone how awesome he is, Obama manages to embarrass everyone.

Yes, in Japan it is customary to bow to one another but business associates are careful to bow at equal depths so as not to one up the other with subservience, if that makes sense. It is somewhat rude to blatantly play the ‘most subservient’, which Obama clumsily did.

New acquaintances sometimes get into little bowing wars, each returning a slightly deeper bow. If you’ve ever seen this, it can look funny but the people engaged in it are trying to save face by displaying their humbleness toward the other person’s humbleness.

The Emperor was NOT in a position to return a deeper bow or get into a bowing war, of course. He obviously understood Obama’s goof to be a cultural misunderstanding and did what any gracious host would do–smile and move right along. The Japanese media has also glossed over this and has largely refused to report on those 3 seconds of misunderstanding because they still have a sense of honor when it comes to the Emperor; making a big deal out of it would only serve to embarrass him further.

  • Portia Elizabeth

Okay, I’ve read several of your self-righteous comments, Prime Obot, and I have to speak up.

You act as though you can speak for China, but you are so far from accurate that you’d need an atlas to find your way. My husband is Chinese. He was born in Taiwan because his family left China just ahead of Mao’s takeover in the late 40′s. He still has relatives in Mainland China and we have visited more than once. You have no idea what Chinese think and you are too naive to realize that Chinese have a “Western face” they assume for people like you.

My husband, his famly and everyone they know who is Chinese despise Obama and see him as a fool and a colossal joke. They have nothing but disdain for him. The Chinese government is happy to take advantage of his arrogance to further subjugate the US. They are quietly taking more control of our economy until one day you will wake up and find all the street signs in Mandarin. You’ll likely scratch your head and, slack-jawed, wonder what happened. Be sure to thank BO when your job moves to Shanghai.

  • Portia Elizabeth

It is possible to show respect without displaying subservience.

  • hc123

Sorry if this is a duplicate!

I have seen these little “bowing wars” – they are amusing. Particularly as a (taller) foreigner if you “bow too much” they are sure to bow back just to make sure its all good. Being confused, you of course bow again, and they of course must reciprocate. Over and over.

    Nixon/Hirohito is how bowing works.

Obama has it completely wrong – it was in fact neither required nor desired and it makes him look ridiculous. Not respectful. Not the bestest president evah. Just a buffoon.

  • Galt goes to Hollywood

I was thinking of a more X rated theme would be appropriate as he shafts the nation and potentially the globe.

  • sandra

no, you are wrong – hillary did offend her hosts with that speech (even though i respect her for doing it). Obama did NOT offend the Japanese, period.
People in other countries like Obama very much – live with it, as it is true. you are the minority

  • getfitnow

Right, Annie, BO and MO don’t seem to realize or don’t care that they are “representing” us.

  • getfitnow

My understanding is that some newspapers in Japan didn’t print the photo because it was embarrassing to them.

  • getfitnow

Peggy Sue, Coast to Coast has been covering this.

  • getfitnow

Annie, she DID recently! There was a Medal of Honor presented to the parents of a fallen soldier. She had on a sleeveless, hugely floral printed dress with either green or blue shoes.

    Tasteless.

  • glennmcgahee

Did anybody XCLUSIVE interview with Chuck Todd of MSNBC gossip show? I didn’t watch the interview – just saw a clip. I do know that the lighting appeared to make Obama seem darker than he is. Is MSNBC trying to scare us with a dark black man or something. That lighting is suspect. Freedom Fighter and Prime Obot, please go to KOS and discuss this issue and tell MSNBC to stop with the racism.

  • jbjd

You see, PO, it’s all in the little details, the little subtle details that it becomes oh so important to a nation, such as Japan, where every citizen is brought up with the understanding of the intricate nature and meaning of appearances and social graces.

    Nuance is everything.

  • jbjd

And therein lies the proof that the Japanese people consider BO’s bow to be a breach in protocol; that is, recognizing its inappropriateness, they are sufficiently considerate of the POTUS and the people he represents, to print the pictures.

  • connie

Sorry Larry, this is off topic but I felt I needed to get this out on Rev. Manning.

Homeland security and CIA has been to his church and he is under investigation for the birth certificate issue. Everyone watch it, how could Rev. Wright get away with his statements about the USA and this man be thrown in jail for asking for the Birth Certificate??

  • jbjd

He will implode when people begin to ask these questions. On what basis did Nancy Pelosi, acting in the non-governmental role of Chair of the 2008 DNC Convention, certify to state election officials, BO is Constitutionally qualified for the job of POTUS, to get his name printed on state general election ballots? 2) Why did she (and Alice Germond, DNC Secretary and Joseph Sandler, DNC General Counsel)refuse to answer this question, submitted to them in writing by concerned citizens throughout the country?

Prime Obot, I keep asking you on what basis NP Certified BO was Constitutionally qualified but you continue to ignore me. Why don’t you ask her (or AG or Tim Kaine, current DNC Chair) directly and see whether you can evoke a response?

He has no respect for anything “American” but seems to revere those who were/are our enemies. He snubbed the Browns of England and did not show special reverence for the Queen of England, yet bows to Saudi kings (those who give their people no human rights) and feels compelled to apologize for OUR behavior. The fact that he will have KSM’s trial in NY shows his contempt for Americans and their suffering. That is like taking Holocaust victims to Auschwitz and forcing them to sit in the gas chambers while talking about what happened to them. It is obscene and so is the mind-set of Mr. Fraud-in-Charge.
