img-bs-top-clemons-craig_120502493367The White House counsel was done in by a scurrilous leaks campaign. So much for the Obama team’s pledge to be transparent, forthright and accountable for their actions.

Gregory Craig, White House counsel to President Obama and national security advisor to Obama during the presidential campaign, resigned his post this past Friday. But when rumors broke Thursday of his imminent departure, Craig had not written his farewell note and may not have planned to leave – yet.

Since the summer, word had been leaking that Greg Craig’s days were numbered and that Obama campaign legal counsel Bob Bauer would be moving in to take Craig’s spot.

But the situation seemed similar to the leaks about National Security Adviser Jim Jones’ supposedly tenuous hold on his job—which were either untrue, or turned around by Jones’ performance. The leaks about Craig also seemed unfounded—especially in light of direct statements from the White House that the statements were untrue and that he was not departing.

The sustained nature of the leaks and—and the fact that they ultimately proved to be true—indicates something quite disappointing for anyone who had hoped that the Obama White House would operate more transparently and honestly than the Bush team had.

Some observers are now calling this incident the Obama team’s first assassination by leak.

Lloyd Grove: The Boys Obama Throws Under the Bus

Such intrigue and innuendo stand in sharp contrast to the internal vow of key stakeholders in Barack Obama’s campaign, as reported in David Plouffe’s insider account Audacity to Win—whom he says vowed not to allow “@#%holes” and leaks and the blame game to disrupt any aspect of their campaign.

When problems arose or mistakes were made, the president and his team were forthright and dealt with each other directly and confessed their sins, when they committed them, to the public.

Obama himself set a tone of a “No Drama Obama” campaign and worked hard to keep the campaign’s machinations on the high road and not in the political gutter.

What just happened to Gregory Craig should not have happened in Obama Land. It’s something from what Dick Cheney would have called “The Dark Side”–where insinuation and character assassination were leaked to undermine a foe. Think of the manner in which Scooter Libby and Karl Rove promulgated the revelation that Bush administration thorn Joe Wilson was married to a CIA covert operative.

I spoke to Gregory Craig in the summer when the first leaks began to break. While he suspected they were driven by someone in the White House who was frustrated with the slow progress on shuttering GITMO, Craig did not know who was out to get him. He had no idea.

But the sustained nature of the leaks and—and the fact that they ultimately proved to be true—indicates something quite disappointing for anyone who had hoped that the Obama White House would operate more transparently and honestly than the Bush team had.

In fact, leaks are becoming standard fare by key players in the Obama administration. Someone, most likely on the military/intel side of the president’s national security bureaucracy, leaked Afghanistan Commanding General Stanley McChrystal’s report to Bob Woodward. Recently, other political players infuriated U.S. Ambassador to Afghanistan Karl Eikenberry by leaking his eleventh-hour contrarian view on a U.S. force surge to the press.

But it’s quite hard to maintain the kind of Obama-esque upbeat tone of transparency and forthrightness and punish staff for leaking when the president himself is standing by and doing nothing as his closest advisors undermine one of their own.

NPR’s Nina Totenberg puts the finger on White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel. “There doesn’t seem to be much doubt that these leaks came at least indirectly from Rahm Emanuel,” she reported. “What is the cause of the friction? It’s very hard to say. Was it Rahm not wanting to have another power center? Was it their personalities? Was it Rahm seeing the GITMO stuff as a distraction from the president’s agenda?”

If the leaks were, in fact, made with President Obama’s encouragement, they could have come from any number of others deep inside the team – including David Axelrod, Valerie Jarrett, or Denis McDonough. It almost doesn’t matter who among these insiders might have done the leaking. None of them would have engaged in such an effort to dislodge Greg Craig unless the president had lost faith in his counsel.

But that begs the question: Why didn’t the president himself have a direct discussion with his counsel? Why didn’t Rahm Emanuel, as the president’s Cromwell, put it straight to the GITMO-burdened White House lawyer? Obama might have been uncomfortable with dislodging a friend and someone who had been so valuable and close during the campaign. As for Emanuel, it may be that he excels in and enjoys political intrigue more than being upfront.

Whatever the reason for pushing Craig out—be it his failure to put the dynamics in place to shut down the Guantanamo detention center in the first year of the Obama presidency, or something much more substantial than this—the White House counsel was on the outs with Obama, and few had the backbone to put it to him directly.
Now that the White House has opened the door to the political tradecraft of leaks, others on the Obama team may feel empowered to deploy these indirect assaults in their own battles against internal foes. Given the “team of rivals” Obama has assembled in nearly every policy arena, the coming policy wars in and around the White House will be fascinating to watch.

But what we just saw in Greg Craig’s firing was not “change we can believe in.” It was a sign that the dark side has taken hold at the White House.

If you mean “anyone” as in the kool aid drinkers, you may have a point, but once again, anybody who took 10 minutes to look into his background last year already knew that this guy was FOS (full of shit).

Obama is only concerned with one thing: Obama. If it means undermining people, leaking, destroying them, then so be it.

  • PO’dVet

Lets get this straight. Neither Obama, or any of his Obamatons are in the gutter. None of them have risen anywhere near that high yet. They are solidly in the center of the septic system, and as usually is the case when no work is done on it…They are all full of shit!

And one more thing. This Clemons guy is “Director of the American Strategy Program”, seminars on CSPAN, yet the tone here is almost one of surprise and shock that the Obama WH would act like the Bushies.

Is there some law that I don’t know about in DC that when you move there you have to shove your head up your ass?

“Is there some law that I don’t know about in DC that when you move there you have to shove your head up your ass?” asks Obama:Dubya2

I lived there for a yr and a-half and the answer is “yes”! And those pedestrian crosswalks can be extremely hazardous because of it :)

I’m not shedding any tears for Craig – just another member of the inside-the-beltway permanent corruption party.

How long will we have to play Cassandra to a bunch of over-cooked vegeatbles who just want to be left alone to play their XBox games and eat Cheetos? Was Plato writing about them when he penned his Allegory of the Cave?

I seldom speculate but, I believe the only purpose of getting GC out was to get BB in. Why call in from the cold BO’s personal attorney, who wrote the book – literally – on federal election law? Because sooner or later, an AG in one of the applicable states, will go after one of the D’s named in one of my complaints of election fraud to state A’sG. And BB is prominently named in those citizen complaints to the AG, as the man who signed the Motion to Dismiss submitted to the federal court in Hollister, in which he added the footnote asking the judge to take judicial notice of the ‘facts’ 1) BO showed the public a document indicating he was born in HI (that is, he posted a heavily redacted document entitled Certification of Live Birth on a web site he bought and paid for; called it a “Birth Certificate”; and had his former employer, APFC, vouch for its authenticity); and 2) APFC noted a contemporaneous newspaper birth announcement (that is, APFC posted a phantom image of an ‘announcement’ on its web site, unattributed as to publication but credited to an “anonymous” blogger from td (TexasDarlin)). This proved to me, the strongest evidence that exists to indicate BO was Constitutionally qualified for the job are that internet COLB and APFC’s endorsement. Well, that might have been good enough for the Electors and Congress, with no Constitutional requirement to vet the would be POTUS for Constitutional qualifications. But in the states, this means, no one who forwarded those Certifications for BO to get his name printed next to the D on the ballot, could have previously ascertained he was qualified. That’s election fraud. (No wonder the DNC refuses to tell us on what basis they signed those Certifications!) I am in the process of combing through the DC bar codes for professional responsibility, and court decisions on attorney discipline, in preparation of filing a complaint against Mr. Bauer’s license to practice.

Judicial notice of an unattributed phantom image on a computer screen, which disappears and reappears on the whims of a browser? What a joke; and I anticipate the federal court will not appreciate having been made the butt of one of BB’s/BO’s jokes.

    jbjd,

Good luck with this important research and analysis. I’ve read your posts with appreciation and look forward to the light you constantly shed on these complex issues.

Goodbye, old boss; hello, new boss!

Doncha just love transparency and change you can believe in?

This would be funny, except it’s not.

Same old games. Just a different signature on the dead bodies.

But please, Obamatrons. Keep on making those ridiculous excuses.

    It’s so-o-o patriotic!

Thank you. Psychic benefits really help.

  • lorac

Thank you! When I read in the article what a paragon of virtue Obama has been until now, I realized the author wasn’t paying attention to the primaries.

Well don’t forget Glen Beck hinted a month ago on his show that Bob Bauer was going to get a “controversial” job with the Obama Administration. Don’t forget Bob Bauer’s spouse is Anita Dunn and she has the Presidents ear. She even hinted that Obama was ok with (and approved) her attack on Fox News. The way I see it, Obama wanted Bauer on his staff and he had no problem pushing someone out to give him a job.

  • lorac

Has Beck ever touched the birth certificate issue? Do you think this is what he means by “controversial”, or what else could it mean….?

I’d love to see this issue resolved, but I hope that anyone who pushes the issue has bodyguards! They were shooting at that CNN guy at his own home, and apparently all he was doing was talking about illegal immigrants.

  • NomNomNom

Unbelievable. You have managed to avoid any mention that this pos is an ally servant of Karl freaking Rove and was instrumental in crafting Rove’s deal with the House Judiciary Committee.

All I can say to Craig is, Karma, is such a B—ch!

Serves Craig right for betraying the Clintons during the 2008 campaign — and for bringing Kennedy and Kerry along with him.

Thanks. I wondered why BO had not directed Holder to investigate the Govenors plight.

lorac, that was my first thought as well. Instead of spending time doing his own blog, Clemons should have been coming to sites like NQ. He would have realized by Feb or Mar 2008 that something was amiss here.

And Btw, anyone gullible enough to put any credence in a book written by a member of B0′s so-called campaign staff is whistling in the wind. Presumably, David Plouffe will be used again as the front for the 0bama campaign, and anything he says NOW, is brainwashing for 2012.

Actually, there were 5 or 6 independent campaigns that dove-tailed together with one goal: defeat the republicans regardless of what we have to do. B0 was simply at the right places at the right times beginning with his 2004 Dem Nat’l Conv speech. Then came the DNC and dem party leadership that were the most militant in their obsession to defeat the republicans who had deprived the dems in 2000 (including me) of the candidate who received the most votes, but was not the winner.

Only problem was, they didn’t use their biggest guns on the repubs, they turned them on one of their own, Hillary Clinton. Then there was Move-On.org, SEIU, Acorn and the fraudulently registered voters who voted, the fraudulent fund-raising, the fraudulent caucuses stacked with out-of-state caucus goers as well as ‘fixing’ the numbers, the DNC Rules and By-laws committee meeting that handed over delegates won by HRC to B0, the race card playing by otherwise prominent AA leaders and political officials.

It was a cesspool of corruption, the likes of which has never been seen in American politics before, regardless of the corruption in past elections. Yet, it was and is continuously billed as the most brilliant campaign ever run. Why would anyone think the WH would be any different from the campaign cesspool? If you didn’t understand it in the primary, I can see why it would take a while for the glitter to wear off the fake gold.

  • FranSC

Actually, this is one of their socialist doctrines: someone must go to make room for the least among us – or something like that.

I am glad the president got himself a dog. Dogs add a lot of happiness to peoples lives and I have noticed in Brooklyn were I am from more and more people are getting dogs. I wonder if a dog would make a better symbol for America than the bald eagle. I don’t think I have ever seen a bald eagle in person and I know I have never seen one make my friends happy.
