Well I also think that cancer is really a seriour and some what dangerous, It's positive results generate a lot of tests and procedures, in the end that does not change the likelihood of death from breast cancer.

This was really a great post, given by you, well I think that I was glad to see the new recommendations, I also believe the new research, despite distrusting the government.

They are sticking to primary care issues... exams, screening, etc. are primary care issues. If cancer is found, then yes the specialists are brough in (oncologists, etc.)

Nothing in what changed was related to treatment...

If anyone does not believe that health care dollars could not ultimately be rationed by recommendations by federal panels like this one, see what the LA Times had to say.

As much as we would like to believe that every life is worth endless amounts of money, there are limits on resources for healthcare. It makes sense to locate those resources where they do the most good.

Then they should stick to primary care issues.

Breast cancer is treated by specialists.

Cancer is serious. They can talk about numbers on and on. Their study was about breast cancer mortality not being affected by the routine screening in those under 40. Their recommendations are partially derived from the number of false positive results that generate a lot of anxiety, and a lot of additional tests and procedures, that ultimately do not alter the chance of death from breast cancer.

Try telling that to someone who is a survivor whose breast cancer was found incidentally on a routine mammogram.

A new report by the American Cancer Society (ACS) shows that in the US, the overall rate of deaths from breast cancer in women continues to fall by around 2 per cent a year, a trend that started in 1990.

The types of doctors in this group that came out with those recommendations are preventative medicine. Medical doctors, nurses, and Ph.D.'s but not one is a medical oncologist, surgical oncologist, or radiation oncologist. It is unclear if they are academicians, practitioners, or a mixture of both.

Statistics give only so much of a picture. The following table should give a hint that breast cancer incidence is not something that just starts at 50. The incidence starts bumping notably at 40.

Probability of Developing Breast Cancer Within the Next 10 years

 By age 20 = 1 out of 1,985
 By age 30 = 1 out of 229
 By age 40 = 1 out of 68
 By age 50 = 1 out of 37
 By age 60 = 1 out of 26
 By age 70 = 1 out of 24
 Lifetime = 1 out of 8

Re the "no oncologist" issue, a simple answer.. The Task Force is made up of primary care physicians and they are addressing primary care issues.

If you haven't heard that, you haven't been reading.

Actually prostate cancer has an even higher rate of over-diagnosis and over-treatment -- which can lead to serious urological problems. And they're no longer recommending screening for average risk men. http://www.cancer.org/docroot/PED/content/ped_2_3X_ACS_Cancer_Detection_Guidelines_36.asp

This whole notion that these guidelines are a huge conspiracy is just crap. I've been reading the data for years, and mammogram increases diagnoses of "borderline cancer" like DCIS, but does not increase survivability of aggressive cancers.

Is it possible that this was an over-hyped test? Is it possible that this test was over-sold, just as drugs are oversold? Answer, yes.

I find it ironic that this article criticizes the 'cherry-picking' of data, without supplying any contradicting data of its own at all.

Early detection, like many issues, is about the shades of grey. Is detecting cancer that would never go on to spread really a good thing?

My husbands first wife died at 44 from breast cancer she had a lump in rather an odd place just below her breast they told her it was a sprained muscle when it was detected it had gone too far and was in her bones she broke her leg and thats how they found it!!!! Too late 12 months later she was gone.

and a friend died form cervical cancer at 24. The Drs kept telling her there was no way she was at risk of cancer at 24 by the time they did the test after arguing for months it was too late she didn't last 12 months it was devastating!!

You posted on the wrong comment.

But to answer....no, it's not too extreme. Extreme is this administration now saying you are not to perform self breast exams.

So gee, if you find one when touching your breasts and you weren't supposed to, because clearly if you see medical help for what you found, but you weren't supposed to touch yourself to find anything, do you really think they will cover you?

If there laws for coverage are based on that, won't that make it illegal, or just unlawful :)
