Obama to Speak at Berlin Victory Column, Berliner Zeitung Says

- Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama will give a speech at the Victory Column in central Berlin, avoiding the Brandenburg Gate after a political spat broke out over plans to speak there, Berliner Zeitung said.

A stage will be set up at the column, a 19th-century fluted structure that lies at the opposite end of a tree-lined boulevard from the Brandenburg Gate, the newspaper said. The campaign will announce the plans for July 24 today, it said.

An appearance at the Victory Column, capped by its trademark gilded angel, will still give the Illinois senator the Brandenburg Gate as a backdrop in the distance. A political squabble erupted after Chancellor Angela Merkel expressed apprehension about the gate being used for electioneering.

While the Brandenburg Gate has come to symbolize Germany’s division and reunification, the Victory Column celebrates Prussia’s victories over Denmark, Austria and France in the late 19th century. More recently, the column and its angel were featured in Wim Wenders’s 1987 film “Wings of Desire.”

Did you see this from Ben Smith – because former Democratic Senator Max Cleland is a registered lobbyist, Cleland’s been uninvited from a Georgia Obama Campaign event.

“Sen. Cleland is definitely not doing lobbying work. He gives speeches and campaigns for a few friends, but mostly he’s spending his time taking care of his father,” Marshall said. He declined to comment on the incident in Atlanta.

In a brief telephone interview, Cleland also declined to comment on his treatment by the campaign.

But Cleland told others he was unpleasantly surprised when, after an invitation to the event for Obama — whom he supports — he was told at the last minute by an Obama aide that he wouldn’t be welcome.

Regarding Obama’s political world tour, remember that Obama just now is getting interested in Afghanistan, whereas he never was before. Even Biden criticized him for it.

Jim DeMint R- SC, wrote, “With oversight of NATO relations and its role in Afghanistan, I believe it is time for us to focus closely on these issues,” DeMint wrote, suggesting a meeting of the subcommittee upon Obama’s return from a much anticipated trip abroad.

Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Joe Biden, D-Del., had previously told Meet the Press that “the reason Obama didn’t hold a hearing on NATO, I chair the committee. Every one of those committee hearings are held at full committee.”

But today Biden decided to take his defense of Obama one step further, writing to DeMint that there have been plenty of hearings on European Affairs, they’ve just been held at the “full committee level.”

“On the particular issue of NATO’s mission in Afghanistan,” Biden wrote, “We have held three Full Committee hearings in the last 22 months . . .

Jake Tapper, who compiled this info, noted:

But Biden’s letter brought attention to the fact that Obama did not attend two of those three hearings — and for the third, on March 8, 2007, Obama only asked one question, one unrelated to Afghanistan.

How do I know the latter fact? From an August 2007 press release from Biden himself, when he was running for president.

“BIDEN CAMPAIGN CONGRATULATES SEN. OBAMA FOR JOHNNY-COME-LATELY POSITION,” it read. Noting that at the March 2007 hearing, “Sen. Obama asked one question that was unrelated to Taliban or Afghanistan.”

There is an increasing consensus that Obama will have too dramatically outspend John McCain in order to win the general election; but the question remains, how much will they have to spend? It is unimaginable that the Obama campaign burned through $35 million dollars in the month of June and the best they could do was to ‘barely hold on’.

I don’t think ABC’s Charlie Gibson is an elite.
He’s been relatively fair.

Obama became a member of the U.S. Senate in 2005. Three weeks later, Michelle Obama was appointed a position at the University Of Chicago Hospitals, which nearly tripled her salary.

I’ve worked in a similar position for a health care system and about fell over when I read about her salary ($300K). Will someone please investigate this? I’d like to know if the position Michelle was appointed to right after her husband became a state senator was a newly created position. If the position wasn’t new, why was it vacant and what did the previous person earn? Why did the University of Chicago appoint a high-priced Ivy League lawyer to do community relations/communications work?

A young woman explained to me that Obama has won the nomination with a majority of delegates and I need to accept that my candidate lost. WASHINGTON — Barack Obama wants to speak at the Brandenburg Gate.

He figures it would be a nice backdrop. The supporting cast — a cheering audience and a few fainting frauleins — would be a picturesque way to bolster his foreign policy credentials.

What Obama does not seem to understand is that the Brandenburg Gate is something you earn. President Reagan earned the right to speak there because his relentless pressure had brought the Soviet empire to its knees and he was demanding its final “tear down this wall” liquidation. When President Kennedy visited the Brandenburg Gate on the day of his “Ich bin ein Berliner” speech, he was representing a country that was prepared to go to the brink of nuclear war to defend West Berlin.

Who is Obama representing? And what exactly has he done in his lifetime to merit appropriating the Brandenburg Gate as a campaign prop? What was his role in the fight against communism, the liberation of Eastern Europe, the creation of what George Bush 41 — who presided over the fall of the Berlin Wall but modestly declined to go there for a victory lap — called “a Europe whole and free”?

Does Obama not see the incongruity? It’s as if a German pol took a campaign trip to America and demanded the Statue of Liberty as a venue for a campaign speech. (The Germans have now gently nudged Obama into looking at other venues

The demonization of lobbyists is a problem for Obama and Co. Does he realize that the American AIDS Foundation and practically all healthcare groups for cancer and other diseases all have lobbyists to push for funding of research and healthcare? Lobbying is a way for ordinary Americans who don’t have “connections” or a lot of money. Its a necessary thing. Every lobbyist is not an Abramoff.
