The Onion reports on Obama Puff Piece and Redstateupdate addresses the Jesse Jackson problem

Have you ever enjoyed The Onion? It’s all satire. Today it had a hilarious piece on Obama media puffery.

NEW YORK—Hailed by media critics as the fluffiest, most toothless, and softest-hitting coverage of the presidential candidate to date, a story in this week’s Time magazine is being called the definitive Barack Obama puff piece.

“No news publication has dared to barely scratch the surface like this before,” columnist and campaign reporter Michael King wrote in The Washington Post Tuesday. “This profile sets a benchmark for mindless filler by which all other features about Sen. Obama will now be judged. Just impressive puff-journalism all around.”

Go look at it. You need a laugh. You know you do.

Oh, and here’s Redstateupdate’s take on the Jesse Jackson madness.

I am unhappy with Obama to bring a load of media with him to Iraq..It has nothing to do with Mccain. But for him to do that,it going to put pressure and extra works for the military personnel over to provide security for him,his other senators friends that going with him and media circus….Alots of Armed forces personnel going to get invloved with this..why waste more personnel on providing security for unnecessary people like media…When these personnel could be providing more security for fellow comrades!!

What I want to know is if they’re going to be showing any of the demonstrations. There are some planned demonstrations against Obama according to friends I have in Germany. I hope one of them gets me the video, because I don’t think they’re going to show it here if there are any.

Anyway, I have never heard of the Onion. So thank you Lisa for the hilarious video and links.

      • BJ

You’ve never heard of the Onion! where you been! lol – hey can your friend post a video on youtube of Obama’s visit? that would be a fast way to get the attention out.

Why Jesus would not vote for Barack Obama

In February 2004, U.S. Senate candidate Barack Obama’s wife, Michelle, sent a fund-raising letter with the “alarming news” that “right-wing politicians” had passed a law stopping doctors from stabbing half-born babies in the neck with scissors, suctioning out their brains and crushing their skulls.
Michelle called partial-birth abortion “a legitimate medical procedure,” and wouldn’t supporters please pay $150 to attend a luncheon for her husband, who would fight against “cynical ploy[s]” to stop it?

But that’s not why Obama’s opponent Alan Keyes said Jesus Christ wouldn’t vote for him.

Obama recalled Keyes’ statement in a recent USA Today opinion piece but omitted his reasoning.

I know his reasoning, because I was there.

As a nurse at an Illinois hospital in 1999, I discovered babies were being aborted alive and shelved to die in soiled utility rooms. I discovered infanticide.

Legislation was presented on the federal level and in various states called the Born Alive Infants Protection Act. It stated all live-born babies were guaranteed the same constitutional right to equal protection, whether or not they were wanted.

BAIPA sailed through the U.S. Senate by unanimous vote. Even Sens. Clinton, Kennedy and Kerry agreed a mother’s right to “choose” stopped at her baby’s delivery.

The bill also passed overwhelmingly in the House. NARAL went neutral on it. Abortion enthusiasts publicly agreed that fighting BAIPA would appear extreme. President Bush signed BAIPA into law in 2002.

But in Illinois, the state version of BAIPA repeatedly failed, thanks in large part to then-state Sen. Barack Obama. It only passed in 2005, after Obama left.

I testified in 2001 and 2002 before a committee of which Obama was a member.

Obama articulately worried that legislation protecting live aborted babies might infringe on women’s rights or abortionists’ rights. Obama’s clinical discourse, his lack of mercy, shocked me. I was naive back then. Obama voted against the measure, twice. It ultimately failed.

In 2003, as chairman of the next Senate committee to which BAIPA was sent, Obama stopped it from even getting a hearing, shelving it to die much like babies were still being shelved to die in Illinois hospitals and abortion clinics.

(As chair of that same committee, Obama once abruptly ended a hearing early, right before Scott and Janet Willis, the parents of six children killed as a result of Illinois’ drivers licenses for bribes scandal, were to testify in favor of Choose Life license plate legislation. I was there for that one, too. The Willises had traveled three hours. Reporters filled the room. Obama stalled. He later killed the bill when no one was around.)

So, the reason Keyes said Jesus Christ wouldn’t vote for Barack Obama was because of Obama’s fanatical support of abortion to the point of condoning infanticide.

I have framed on my wall a Chicago Sun-Times cartoon published during the campaign. Obama is holding a sign with “LIVE BIRTH ABORTION” on it. God is reaching down from heaven to a baby in front of Obama, and the baby is reaching up to God. Obama is yelling at God, “You keep out of this!”

In his USA Today opinion piece, Obama admitted being “nagged” by the Jesus-wouldn’t-vote-for-him statement, but only because he wished he’d given a different comeback.

Obama insinuated opposition to abortion is based only on religion, lecturing pro-lifers like me to “explain why abortion violates some principle that is accessible to people of all faiths, including those with no faith at all.”

I don’t recall mentioning religion when I testified against live-birth abortion. I only recall describing a live aborted baby I held in a hospital soiled utility room until he died, and a live aborted baby who was accidentally thrown into the trash.

Neither do I recall religion being brought into the partial-birth abortion ban debate. I recall comparisons made to U.S. laws ensuring animals being killed are treated humanely. I recall testimony that late-term babies feel excruciating pain while being aborted.

Obama stated pro-life proposals must be “amenable to reason.”

OK, Sen. Obama, let’s reason. Explain why you support abortion for whatever rationale, at whatever gestation, by whatever means. Explain why you support infanticide, if banning it might interfere with abortion.

      • Lute

        Hi Jill –
You’ve got all the solutions for everyone, haven’t you?
That procedure you abhore saved millions of lives.
Before abortion became legal, young girls who didn’t have a lot of money, were not ready to bear a child, died in back alley butcher shops, or died from septic coat hanger abortions.
Do you want to bring all that back, Jill?
Meanwhile, the rich young ladies, like Senator McCain’s wife, could discreetly jet to Europe and end their pregancy in a clinic.
My friend has three beautiful children raised in a loving family.
It would not have happened if she could not have ended her pregnancy as an 18 year old. She knew at the time she would only resent a child, and would have been an abusive mother, and she would not have gone to college.
Here in America, you have the right to choose what you think is best for yourself and your own situation.
The problem is that some religious folk want to end that. They want to tell everyone to think and act just the way they do.

        • Lute

That being said, I do agree with you that Obama sucks.

        • BARB

“Here in America, you have the right to choose what you think is best for yourself and your own situation.”

But should this “right to choose” include the right to shelve babies who were aborted alive to be left to die in soiled utility rooms or dumped in trash cans? Should this right include infanticide?

          • Dawnelle

            ewwwwwwwwwwww

            hail no!

Some decisions MUST be left to the individual and their doctor but there HAS to be some kind of dividing line between going tooooooo far!

I say after a certain point it is TOTALLY the life of the patient and their doctor to decide and NOT EVER purely for the whim of anyone.

        • Hope Floats

Jill Stanek is a nurse in Chicago who wrote about her experience as a nurse for a Catholic newspaper. She was talking about Live Birth Abortion which is infanticide. Newborns were left to suffocate on soiled linen closet shelves. This legislation, the Born Alive Infant Protection Act, has already passed on the state and federal levels with no thanks to Obama. He stalled it in IL.

The OP cut and pasted the article. She was not Jill, and she was not advocating a return to “back alley abortions.” You cannot say with any certainty whether abortion saves lives unless you are quoting medical statistics. As for whether your friend couldn’t have finished college or not and skipped a life of poverty is also a fantastical statement. Let’s just say the choice was there for her, and she was content with her decision.

Please don’t bring religion into this. There are many pro-life who feel abortion is amoral, but you set up an argument that religion determines morality. Most likely, the majority of pro-life are religious, but abortion is a secular issue.

          • WildChild

As I see it, if you oppose abortion, don’t have one.

            • Hope Floats

It’s a highly politicized issue, but more or less yes. I am pro-choice. I just wish abortion wasn’t discussed by men in such glowing terms. I think a lot of women who have abortions feel regret and grieve longer than they should since it’s supposedly a freedom and such a wonderful convenience.

              • Mandelay

I think McCain should do an ad on this and knock Obama’s brains in. And use Michelle’s letter if anyone has a copy of it.
The fact that Clinton, Kennedy, and Kerry — and others who have firmly stood in the pro-choice line for decades — voted for BAIPA while Obama did what he could to abort it, will resonate with many voters. McCain could say he’s opposed to abortion, which he is, but would uphold the law of the land, which is something politicos like Mario Cuomo have done ever since Roe v. Wade. However, when a child survives an abortion procedure and is in fact born alive, it qualifies as a human being under the law. Can’t imagine why Obama thinks it was ok to oppose this law, and, worse, can’t imagine why Michelle Obama would take pen in hand to fundraise on such an issue. Fundraise? It shows a deep lack of something essential.

            • http://uppitywoman08.wordpress.com Uppity Woman

And if you are too dumb to understand the concept of birth control, then cross your damned legs because you are too stupid to be having sex.

And I would like to know why a Monkey Wrenching poster would place a “What Would Jesus Do post” into a thread that has absolutely nothing to do with abortion? People must invite you to parties to break them up.

              • Hope Floats

Raise your hand, if you were offended by the “punished with a baby” comment. So are women sacred vessels of life or reproductive serfs?

Imagine telling a young girl she should have “crossed her damn legs.” The species is wired biologically that the “dumb” will be having a lot of sex and making babies.

If there were more compassion regarding this reality, a little less judgment, women would be called “ho’s” a lot less frequently. Maybe UHC would no longer be a dream. Courts would pursue deadbeat dads for delinquent payments. More women would have true freedom and have the choice of raising a child without compromising their futures or dreading poverty. It is a fear instilled in them by society, and an unjust one at that.

I am pro-choice, and I can’t believe I am repeating this to a “woman.” Abortion to me is a necessary evil and a tragedy. No woman relishes the thought of terminating a pregnancy or feels liberated afterward. And I was not the OP, so skip the comments on how this is a humor thread.

      • Zee

tish, hell NO I’m not going to link to World Nut Daily and take your abortion agenda ELSEWHERE.

Women who need late term abortions don’t need YOU in their business. They are women who WANTED their babies and something went horribly awry.

This is a HUMOR thread anyway.

        • Hope Floats

This is Live Birth Abortion not Late Term Abortion. The bill has already passed, and it was never an attack on the viability of legal abortion. Can you refrain from insulting Catholics and conservatives by calling it World Nut Daily?

          • Mandelay

Indeed, there’s no excuse for that name calling, especially as there is a clear distinction on what that law was all about. Again, I find it very disturbing that Michelle Obama thought she could leverage it for a fundraising event. If anyone has a copy of her letter, they should put it out there because it really says something about the Obamas. In my humble opinion, this is something more disturbing than any “whitey” tape.

Just convert to Nader! Your conscience will thank you!

As a matter of conscience, I won’t convert to a religion. Why would I convert to a man? I’d be walking the same road as the BOBOweenies.

      • http://uppitywoman08.wordpress.com Uppity Woman

Nader is a bitter cranky old man who can’t get over that he is no longer worshipped like he was in the 60s. Ralph needs to go fishing. But since he will hurt Barack Obama, I’m glad he’s here this time.

        • wry

Yeah this is where I am on Nader. I resented him when he hurt Al Gore, but now that he hurts Barky…

Special Memo to Uppity and Hope Floats:
You guys are two of my favorite posters. Let’s leave abortion of this site…it’s too volatile.
We need to be united in our opposition to Barky and the fraud and corruption he embodies.

Establishment journalists are a bunch of overeducated, mentally challenged underachievers.

    • cc

why didn’t these a@@wipe news anchors travel en masse with john mccain on his numerous trips abroad. as a former journalist myself of 13 years, i am sickened at their lack of integrity and unethical and biased behavior.

      • Lucinda

Possibly because this is a “first” for Obama, and it’s old hat to McCain.

      • http://liberalrapture.com scott in jupiter

Because McCain did it learn what was going on. barky is doing it to show off, to preen and prance on TV.

Also McCain didn’t pay for the news to follow him around. The barky world tour is free, just get on the plane and ride along all expenses paid.

        • barack who?

Katie Couric, Brian Williams and Charlie have a combined total audience, of what – 114 people?

Although I have to give Charlie credit- he moderated the PA primary debate disaster. Maybe he’ll be less inclined to give Brock the rock star treatment.

I don’t know if C-Span covers international events, (besides Parliament), if there’s any hope of unbiased coverage it’s with them.

because travel arrangements weren’t made for them by mcain’s campaign, and they didn’t want to chase him on commercial flights at the networks expense.

and because Mcain’s foreign trips lost all credibility in that “I can walk through a marketgate”

    • Hope Floats

I love that. McCain told the press they could travel on their own dime and try to keep up. He was traveling by a military craft. The fourth estate is such a weak, plaintive, spoiled bunch of princesses these days like Pampers himself. They expect to be wined and dines and shuttled around or else. The headlines about this read “It’s McCain’s Fault For Uneven Coverage.” LMAO.

Very funny! I feel like I did after the SNL send-up of the ‘debates.’ Good thing the folks at the Onion haven’t forgotten what effective satire is all about. (As opposed to the idiots at NYT magazine.)

  • sjc-tx

This is disgusting! It is more evidence of the complete propoganda and censorship of this campaign. I’d love to see a ‘rebuttal’ piece done directed to Time magazine… Its frightening how this man is still being ‘covered for’. We will ALL pay for it dearly if he is allowed to enter the WH, especially with that nasty wife of his!

I am unable to find humor in any of it at all, any more.

  • wodiej

Overeducated is right, and as someone else said, all of the money being spent for Obama’s fluff trip just to pretend it gives him foreign experience, I can’t believe how stupid all of these people are and apparently think we are all a bunch of nitwits.

    • Dawnelle

Well you MUST admit the RIGHT did goad him into the trip!

The relentless ads and pundits on FOX reminding him that he had YET to meet with Petraeus OR hold a meeting on AfG or go to Iraq.

TOO bad sooooooooooo many people feel the need to go with him and become human shields both mentally and physically!

That’s how it will be from now on I’m sure!

If this is how he kicks off his *world tour 2008*, I would say we are in for a few gaffes at least.

Why does everyone fawn over his *oratory skills*? The guy is as bad as Bush…uh uh you know…

“I want to, obviously, talk to the commanders and get a sense both in Afghanistan and in Baghdad of, you know, what the most, their biggest concerns are, and I want to thank our troops for the heroic work that they’ve been doing.”

“I’m more interested in listening than doing a lot of talking, and I think it’s very important to recognize that I’m going over there as a U.S. senator,” he said. “We have one president at a time.”

Well, yes we do. That is something obama needs to remember, next time he uses his presidential seal, and exclaims, “Morgan Freeman was president before I was. He was God before I was.”

    • barack who?

I agree with your point about the gaffes.

Picture this: Confused Obama brain plus jet lag minus teleprompter. So it could be a good thing that so much media will be there. If they’re offering live coverage of the events, we may be in for a fiasco, a faux pas, or even a good ole fashioned eff up or two.

Or deux. Or dos. Or zwie. (I’m just trying to conform to the Brocky directive to be internationally multilingual.)

      Whew, that was tough!

      • Dawnelle

I can’t spell it but it SOUNDS like the word “dual”

      • barack who?

It looks like the bogus seal appears on a document provided to the press – by the McCain campaign!
If this is legit, it means that the McCain campaign is openly mocking BO. They must not perceive BO as a threat. Their internal polling may be delivering numbers even worse than Gallup and Rasmussen.

That Atlantic page links to the new McCain ad:

“Announcer: Barack Obama never held a single Senate hearing on Afghanistan. He hasn’t been to Iraq in years. He voted against funding our troops. Positions that helped him win his nomination. Now Obama is changing, to help himself become president. John McCain has always supported our troops. And the surge that’s working. McCain: Country first.”

This is McCain’s toughest ad yet….and note the unsubtle use of Obama’s trademarked azure blue…

        • Dawnelle

that’s good to hear if true

        • Hope Floats

HAHAHA. One thing about McCain is he has a sense of humor. The points were all valid and hard-hitting, but juxtapose that with all the smiley happy pics of Obama with that tacky halo they always photoshop onto him. He comes off as a televangelist / game show host. Especially the one where he is apparently surfing (hat tip to John Kerry there.) Nice one.

          • Dawnelle

oh gawd YES who DOES that? with the halo garbage??? It’s disgusting!

At first I laughed when I saw it but anymore it just makes me hugely nauseous thinking of all the mindless kids-20 somethings and how MUCH they will be turned OFF of politics yet AGAIN when this thing is all over.

Barky will survive but the hearts of those kids will be broken into a million pieces.

            sigh

I have a question. I have been wondering for a while, but if anyone has spoken to this, I must have missed it. Does anyone know what possessed Barrys mom to study Russian? I can’t imagine why a 17 year old girl in 1961 would have a need for the Russian language. Any ideas?

because she was anti-AMERICA from the GET GO?

I was also 17 in 1961 and remember the fear and distrust of the Soviet Union that was instilled into us when we were in school. I remember everyone building bomb shelters and in grammar school being given dog tags to wear in case of invasion. I can’t imagine Russian being a language of choice unless you were planning a government career or….

        • Dawnelle

I was 5 in 61 so I could only surmise

Two good friends of mine from my Army days were studying to be language specialists (one Russian and one German) back then DLI was known for high suicide rate with students. The pace of class was too much for some. Russian and Chinese interpreters had huge problems.

I always thought this was strange, too. Her mother was the VP of a big bank in Hawaii. Stanly Ann attended high school in the affluent community of Mercer Island in Washington. But this is odd: the year before she began school “In 1955, the chairman of the Mercer Island school board, John Stenhouse, testified before the House Un-American Activities Subcommittee that he had been a member of the Communist Party.” Then we all know about Obama’s early mentor Frank Marshall Davis. It seems Obama’s mother, who studied anthropology, was interested in communism and passed this on to her son.

There were no Jim Crowe laws in Hawaii when Obama was growing up, so the civil rights movement as seen by a young biracial man was colored by communist sentiment. Communists’ interest in African-Americans stemmed from their presumption that blacks oppressed by the Democrats’ Jim Crow segregation were more likely to serve Soviet interests. Davis infiltrated the Hawaiian NAACP with the purpose of dovetailing these interests, radicalizing the black civil rights movement to promote communist agendas, much like the TUCC doctrine of BLT.

Obama’s father wrote a paper in college, “African Socialism and Its Applicability to Planning in Kenya.” It seems Obama’s parents shared this common interest, statist regimes in developing countries. And they met in a Russian foreign language class.

I agree. I can’t figure out why on earth a 17-year-old girl would study Russian language classes with these interests in life.

Interesting. Thanks for the background. From what I’ve been reading, others seem to use black dissatisfaction for conversion purposes, too.
I can see his father being interested in Russian, but the mother seemed a little odd. Maybe there is something in her family background that would shed more light on her interests. I need to do some digging into the typical white grandparents history.

Damn when did Obama Sr. have time to herd them goats?

Because she was an angry anti American commie sympathizer who was angry at her father for uprooting her and moving to Hawaii AND for naming her STANLEY. She she got knocked up by a married, Marxist African who promptly left her ass for Massachusetts, so he could be among fellow travelers.
