As Usual, Hillary Looks Out For American Women

From the NY Times today:

A Bush administration plan to define several widely used contraception methods as abortion is a “gratuitous, unnecessary insult” to women and faces tough opposition, Sen. Hillary Clinton said on Friday.

Hillary Clinton:

… joined family planning groups to condemn the proposal that defines abortion to include contraception such as birth control pills and intrauterine devices.

It would cut off federal funds to hospitals and states where medical providers are obligated to offer legal abortion and contraception to women.

“We will not put up with this radical, ideological agenda to turn the clock back on women’s rights,” the New York senator told a joint news conference with New York Rep. Nita Lowey, also a Democrat, at Bellevue Hospital.

“Women would watch their contraceptive coverage disappear overnight,” said Clinton.

The planned rule is aimed at countering recent state laws enacted to ensure that women can get contraception when they want or need it. It also would help protect the rights of medical providers to refuse to offer contraception.

Clinton said she has written a letter with Patty Murray, a Democrat senator from Washington, to Health and Human Services Secretary Mike Leavitt asking him to reconsider and reject the release of the proposed rules.

She also urged people to sign a petition on her website, www.hillpac.com, against the proposed changes.

“Our first effort is to get the Bush administration to rescind the regulation, not issue in its current form,” Clinton said. “If that doesn’t succeed, we’re going to be looking for legislative steps that we can take to prevent this regulation from ever going into effect.”

A copy of a memo that appears to be an Department of Health and Human Services draft provided to Reuters this week carries a broad definition of abortion as any procedures, including prescription drugs, “that result in the termination of the life of a human being in utero between conception and natural birth, whether before or after implantation.”

Conception occurs when egg and sperm unite in the Fallopian tubes. It takes three to four days before the fertilized egg implants in the uterus. Several birth control methods interfere with this, including the birth control pill and IUDs.

“If enacted, these rules will make birth control out of reach for some women. That’s a sure way to guarantee more unintended pregnancies and more abortions,” said Anne Davis of Physicians for Reproductive Choice and Health.

Yes, as usual, Senator Clinton is working to protect the rights of women in this country. She doesn’t miss a beat. I wonder if Senator Obama has anything to say about this, or is he too busy playing a rock star in Europe. All the young women who voted for him might want to take note. Gentlemen, you might want to think about this, too. Ladies having access to proper contraception is sort of important to both of you, no? Governmental decisions affecting ‘choice’ affect everyone.

Remember who the true progressive is here. Remember who’s really got your back.

NARAL chose to betray Senator Clinton, even though she helped put them on the map, and always received a 100% pro-choice rating from them.

Senator Obama, on the other hand, voted “present” a number of times in the State Legislature when it came to women’s rights.

Many here might be too young to remember a song called “Superstar”:

Long ago and oh so far away
I fell in love with you before the second show
And your guitar just sounds so sweet and clear
But you’re not really here
It’s just the radio…

Don’t you remember you told me you loved me, baby
Said you’d be comin’ back this way again, baby…

What do you think, ladies? Is he? Now that he’s got your vote? Is he … coming back?

What a shock. Our Lady is in the trenches working her butt off for the people and the Chosen One is running round like he’s already been elected/coronated. I for one cannot wait until November.

    Nobama for me…..

    • Grail Guardian

No shock to me. Hillary has been back to business as usual here in NY since she returned from the campaign. (She’s the energizer bunny in a pantsuit!) Just one of the reasons she has our hearts here. Her first visit was to Buffalo, where a reporter asked her what she does to re-energize from the campaign. Her response was come to Buffalo to help get important projects passed.

Does anyone know anything about http://www.hillpac.com ? It states at the bottom: “Paid for by HillPac, Inc. Not authorized by any candidate or candidate’s committee.”

Haven’t run across the site before this…

      • Mandelay

Go to the linke below for Andrew Malcolm in the LA Times. It seems to define “HillPac.com” (note initial caps) as “her political action committee” … as well as mention a new 2012 website for HRC and also what the article describes as HRC’s planning for 2012.

But hey, shooting hoops is way more fun.

Are you serious? He shot hoops? Jesus Christ. This guy…ugh. I just can’t…he just…I can’t even get the words out. This is his idea of foreign policy, put a ball through a net? Jesus Christ. And to think there are people who call McCain McSame; this shows who is really more like Bush. Trying to be just one of the guys is not the way to show me he is worthy of the presidency. All it shows me is that he is a mediocre nothing!

      • RunningDogLackey

I’m sure Hillary would have stopped the Taliban execution by running serpentine down the tarmac to avoid their sniper fire.

Alas, John McCain couldn’t be there to stop the executions, because he was on “Conan” last night pretending to fall asleep during an interview.

Obama could be parachuting into Tora Bora with a flame-thrower, and you people would bitch at him for being an attention-hog.

          Let’s find out!!

Oh never mind, Obama can’t work up the courage to vote other than “present” most of the time- the jump to Rambo is a bit too much to ask.

How about sticking to a position of “principal” for more than a few weeks at a time?

        • candymarl

The fact is he’s supposed to be in Afganistan to learn about the situation there. He’s not supposed to be there for a hoop-shootin’ photo-op. People are dying and all he can do is shoot hoops?

          That doesn’t bother you?

Of course it doesn’t. It’s all about Barack. Screw the dead and dying.

Meanwhile, Hillary fights to protect and help Americans.

We’re not asking for Rambo. We’re asking for him to show leadership. Shooting hops while people are dying is not leadership. It’s obscene.

Exactly correct. The fact that we are in the middle of two wars is meaningless to him.

This is a sign of monumental disrespect to our troops and to the countries he is visiting.

No, Hillary, would not be running down the tarmac with a flamethrower, but she would exercise respect and decorum, do her best to get updated on the situation on the ground and LEARN SOMETHING. –

This is something Obama has no interest in doing.

    • Clinton Fan

We have ALREADY HEARD FROM OBAMA on the issue of choice. Why, he, like Doctor Frist, would prefer to substitute HIS JUDGMENT (there’s that shitty judgment, yet AGAIN) as to what constitutes “mental distress” on the part of a woman, and how it impacts HER RIGHT (which apparently he believes is HIS perogative, his “permission,” his “blessing,”–not her right) to choose.

Check out THIS lameass “lurch to the right” as he allows NARAL to be run over by the back tire of his bus, and at the same time, panders to a CHRISTIAN MAGAZINE:

      http://www.boston.com/news/nation/articles/2008/07/03/obama_mental_distress_cant_justify_late_abortion/

WASHINGTON—Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama says “mental distress” should not qualify as a health exception for late term-abortions, a key distinction not embraced by many supporters of abortion rights. In an interview this week with “Relevant,” a Christian magazine, Obama said prohibitions on late-term abortions must contain “a strict, well defined exception for the health of the mother.”

Obama then added: “Now, I don’t think that ‘mental distress’ qualifies as the health of the mother. I think it has to be a serious physical issue that arises in pregnancy, where there are real, significant problems to the mother carrying that child to term.”

Last year, after the Supreme Court upheld a federal ban on late-term abortions, Obama said he “strongly disagreed” with the ruling because it “dramatically departs form previous precedents safeguarding the health of pregnant women.”

The health care exception is crucial to abortion rights advocates and is considered a legal loophole by abortion opponents. By limiting the health exception to a “serious physical issue,” Obama set himself apart from other abortion rights proponents. The official position of NARAL Pro-Choice America, the abortion rights group that endorsed Obama in May, states: “A health exception must also account for the mental health problems that may occur in pregnancy. Severe fetal anomalies, for example, can exact a tremendous emotional toll on a pregnant woman and her family.”

As usual, the pandering asshole tries to have it both ways on this issue, nudging to the left, winking to the right….and the LAME ASS MEDIA, on their knees eagerly blowing him like a leaky trombone, FAILS TO CALL HIM ON IT.

        • John

Notice how often these Obamabots use the “argument” that we should support Obama because “these guys have endorsed him?”

They have totally bought in to the follow-the-pack mentality: “Why do you support this guy?” “Um, because…um…because these guys do.” “Oh, Ok.”

And when we express our determination to make our OWN decision, they act like we’ve lost our minds.

His candidacy was endorsed by the head Ms. Keenan(sp?) who was bought off — no onew asked the distrcit NARAL offices — who – IF YOU REMEMBER — disavowed her endorsement and were furious that NARAL abandoned Hillary.

Stick with the facts not the propaganda.

The behavior of the head of NARAL is why this organization has been suspect of late — they have allied themselves inappropriately at times — this is another example of her doing this.

  • Woman

If Obama wins for Pres, Dem women will not be taken seriously for a long time. We will have no power.

    NO DEAL NOW OR EVER

    • Annagain

THat is true. He has no respect for women whatsoever.

  • Diana

That is just asinine. What are women supposed to do go back to having 16, 18, 20 children. That’s what my great-grandparents did. There were 9 of us and I don’t know how my mother did it. She almost died giving birth to the twins and the doctors told them then any more children and she would not survive. So my Catholic father had to go for surgery which really messed with him emotionally. My mother couldn’t she was in the hospital the first 9 1/2 months the twins were born and refused to be fixed.

I’m Catholic and gave birth to three premature infants. One died at three months of age. I couldn’t carry a child to term medically so I said I’m not going to do this to another infant and got fixed. Some things should be left between man/woman and their God. The Pope is not my Savior. No Rev is my savior. I only have one and his name is Jesus. It is for him/and God to judge the reasons. To examine a man’s/woman’s heart and sins. NOT MAN/WOMAN, and NO man/woman is without sin. Something far too many forget.

Thank you Hillary for standing up for us!!

    • Tuppence 411

Diana, bless your heart. ( And I am sorry for your losses.)
You made an excellent point. Having children is a personal decision. Of all our institutions, for sure, Goverment needs to stay OUT of family planning. Hillary made this same exact point on CNN’s faith forum. Look at the extremes. In China, with the one child rule, girls are aborted or abandoned. In India, they round up men for forced mass vasectomies to control population. In eastern- bloc countries, women were virtual baby factories, producing future workers and soldiers for the state by limiting access to contraception.
Our goverment has should have no role.

  • sowsear

I’m surprised (maybe) that Bush is throwing this out there, just when many of us are planning on supporting McCain. Of course, this just gives BO and his minions more ammunition to throw at our NObama stance.
Rove is really messing with us again. Methinks he wants BO this time.

    • http://uppitywoman08.wordpress.com Uppity Woman

If Obama were president women would have a whole lot more to worry about than abortion. This man is the most vile of disrespectful pigs I have seen run for president in my entire not so short lifetime.

      • sowsear

You are right there. My disgust for BO is intense and my fear of what he could do if elected is beyond that.
I was only commenting that this smells Rovian, trying to give BO more ammo that the Repubs/Mc-
Cain will erode all of the gains of Roe vs Wade. For me at my age, this is a non-issue, and I will never vote for BO, and I hope younger women will not let this new threat scare them away from voting for McCain. BO is Bush III!

      • wac for hillary

What do you think will be the first to go under an Obama administration–equal pay for comparable work, Title IX, family leave? Since Obama obviously doesn’t mind disrespectful gestures, words, or songs aimed specifically at women, I think the sky’s the limit. I really wonder how a man with two young daughters can be so comfortable in such an environment and why any woman would want him to be President.

        • Annagain

REMEMBER — the women Obama’s staff make less than the men.

Where as the women on McCain’s staff are paid better than their male counterparts.

And I’m sure Hillary believes in equal pay for equal work — what do you think?

    • http://www.oohnuance.blogspot.com madamab

I think Rove wants BO too. A weak Democratic President will take the blame for all of Bush’s catastrophic mistakes.

Hillary would kick butt and take names. And she might just prosecute Rove’s slimy ass for treason. Remember, he leaked Valerie Plame’s name and put Don Siegelman in jail, and he’s running around free as a bird.

      • sowsear

It amazes me that ANY woman would support Obama. Hillary has been an advocate for women and children her entire life- then Obama comes on the scene with no evidence of real support for women and some women go ga ga. This is a full out game of politics by the Bush Administration, all you need do is look at the timing of it. Bambi is off to show how the world loves him and Bush throws salt into the Democrats wounds by bringing out these issues, knowing Bambi can’t talk of them till after mid-week next week since Bambi is on muslim grounds till then and that is a no no to do while on muslim grounds, thus rising Hillary’s stock while he is away.

In the meantime people will search out Bambi’s stances on the issues and will become agast at his record on them.

I am in no way defending Bambi, I am marveling at the timing of the Republicans to create a situation of revealing. If Bambi talks of the issues of womans rights, especially these issues, while on muslim grounds will create problems, so either Bambi throws into the debate or remains quiet on them. Throwing into them Bambi will have muslim problems in Afganistan, Iraq and Jordan, Bambi keeps quiet and pisses off women at home, it was a lose lose political move and likely not the last one while Bambi is out learning about the world.

After Obama spoke about former Sixers legend Julius Erving – Dr. J – being a boyhood idol, Cataldi asked whether Obama would rather be the president or Dr. J in his prime.

‘The Doctor,’ Obama, immediately drawing laughs. ‘I think any kid growing up, if you got a chance to throw down the ball from the free throw line, that’s better than just about anything.’

I sent them an email. I also have a friend in Germany that works for a newspaper. I sent her a whole list of questions. She’s not covering it, wants nothing to do with it. But said she’s going to pass them on to the person that is. I told her let the person know I think it’s pretty sad that we have to go to a source outside of this country to get any answers because our “real” reporters are all gone. Any other European countries he’s going too? I have friends in Sweden, Denmark, the UK, Holland, as well as several exchange students I’ve hosted from all over Europe including Russia. Have several friends in South American also. Any trips planned there?

quote from GRAIL…”NARAL have proved themselves to be traitors to women’s reproductive rights by endorsing the anti-abortion (unless HE approves it) Obama. End of discussion”

Didn’t your prized one herself endorse OB? Does this make her a betrayer of WRR’s also?

    • Grail Guardian

Yep. That’s the strategy. Clinton’s a traitor if she supports Obama and she’s a traitor if she doesn’t support Obama.

Hillary Clinton has always been a strong advocate for women’s and children’s rights. Obama has never done a damn thing for either women or children (or the rest of America for that matter).

She was forced into backing an inferior candidate after the legitimate nomination was wrenched away from her by your messiah. She has not yet seriously endorsed Obama, merely stated her party unity stance of supporting him.

As you trolls are so fond of pointing out, she supposedly bashed him every chance she got during the primaries, so how could you even dream of taking her statement of support as anything more than her party obligation to campaign for the selectee?

Let’s see – today Clinton made a strong statement and started a movement to protect women’s reproductive rights. Obama shot hoops. Easy choice, d*ckhead.

      • candymarl

Yeah, that evil Hillary. She’s doing her job while Obama plays basketball.

When farmers in upstate NY were in trouble where was she? Oh yeah. She was walking their farms asking about what they faced and how could she help.

Meanwhile, Obama goes overseas to find the adoring crowds. He doesn’t have time for pesky things like helping actual Americans. That’s old politics.

New (Obama) politics is having adoring crowds swoon, promising everything to everyone, and posing for photo-ops. In between, your supporters threaten people and call them crazy traitors.

New politics is voting for a bill that allows spying on Americans and gives the companies that did it immunity. Old politics is voting against that bill.

Old politics is publicly standing up for equality and reproductive rights for women.

Old politics is risking your life by traveling to the south to register Black and Latino voters. Something Hillary did in the 60′s when people, no matter their skin color, were being killed for doing so.

I think I’ll stick with the old politics.

Diana: I think that Hillary PAC site you are looking for is under construction. When you follow the link in the previous post into the article you find that Hillary management has bought up the domain name of HRC2012. If you go to HRC2012 there is nothing there yet. The site was bought in early June so the thinking is that though she supports Obama publicly (and we know what she really thinks of him) she is going to run again in 2012. Yes, you are right. Hillpac goes nowhere.

    • Diana

Ok. Thank you. I couldn’t figure out what I was doing wrong. I feel better now that I got to sign a petition. I get so angry at times. This was the exact reason given to focus on more birth control to help prevent the need for abortions. It’s a good thing I am not a politician. I’d be all over the news, and they think they can take away my rights? After what my grandmother, and her mother, and my mother, and my aunts went through? Back alley abortions. It’s ok for men to once again beat up on women? They better lay down the bong cause there is gonna be some fighting going on up in here. I’m gonna whip some of these other senators, congressmens “A”‘s and take names later. Then we’ll discuss it again. As I stand in the front with fists drawn. The Republicans would be foolish to repeal their cash cow Roe v Wade and bring the ire (I hope) of young women to the fore.

Anyway, Roe is just a ghost – abortion has been made unavailable for many women by the Supremes decisions, violence against doctors (not many are choosing to be abortionists), violence against clinics, thuggery and harassment of women and funding for abortions being stripped for poor and military women. It would be better to have Roe overturned then to continue the charade that Roe actually is a robust right.

  • StrawberrybitesBarky

    Get out of here.

  • wry

He wants women to consult with their clergy on abortion. Yeah, Father Pfleger is the guy I want to discuss my body with. We know he’s so sensitive to women’s feelings.

  • Grail Guardian

    From the Wall Street Journal:

On the other, he wants to court independent suburban women, who tend to be pro-choice, and he’s laboring to attract Hillary Clinton voters – and donors to her campaign.

Perhaps this is why Sen. Obama’s moves on abortion have seemed clumsy. He made news by saying he supported a ban on “partial birth” abortions except if the mother’s life or health was seriously threatened – only to back off and add “mental health” to the list of exemptions.

Sen. Obama’s approach has been to combine pro-choice policies with conspicuous respectfulness of pro-life people. While he supports the Freedom of Choice Act, which would potentially roll back state restrictions on abortion, his Web site declares that he “respects those who disagree with him.”

    From the AP:

ODemocratic presidential candidate Barack Obama says “mental distress” should not qualify as a justification for late-term abortions, a key distinction not embraced by many supporters of abortion rights.

To see Hillary Clinton’s position, read the f*ing article, troll!

Hey Jenna, remember when Obama was in favor of public financing of Presidential elections?

I know it was almost six weeks ago, but even Obama supporters must have SOME long-term memory skills.

Oh, but abortion is an issue Obama would NEVER abandon. No sirree. It’s not a minor issue like public financing or FISA or immediate withdrawal from Iraq. Those, he can cave on, no problem! That doesn’t imply a PATTERN or anything!

Nope, we can trust Obama on abortion- which means what, exactly? That Roe v Wade will be upheld? It’s been upheld under Reagan and two Bush Presidencies, the second of which had a majority of both houses of Congress and the SCOTUS.

Really, give it a rest. You’re boring. You’re iconsistent, and it’s not selling here.

So our choices are between who is the least sexist. Thus we should be forever grateful that there are degrees of sexism in people that we should choose and tolerate.

If Hillary was the candidate this wouldnt’ even be a consideration.

Hillary wouldn’t be playing basketball, but talking about the rights and treatment of woman today in Afghanistan. Google is your friend…do some research.

Here is a portion of Senator Clinton’s speech in 1995. Read it again and again until it soaks into that pea brain. Don’t don’t tell about the false dichotomy of Obama and McCain. We still have a small chance to elect a woman that will be a true revolutionary progressive.
    http://www.americanrhetoric.com/speeches/hillaryclintonbeijingspeech.htm
What we are learning around the world is that if women are healthy and educated, their families will flourish. If women are free from violence, their families will flourish. If women have a chance to work and earn as full and equal partners in society, their families will flourish. And when families flourish, communities and nations do as well. That is why every woman, every man, every child, every family, and every nation on this planet does have a stake in the discussion that takes place here…

The great challenge of this conference is to give voice to women everywhere whose experiences go unnoticed, whose words go unheard. Women comprise more than half the word’s population, 70% of the world’s poor, and two-thirds of those who are not taught to read and write. We are the primary caretakers for most of the world’s children and elderly. Yet much of the work we do is not valued — not by economists, not by historians, not by popular culture, not by government leaders.

Tragically, women are most often the ones whose human rights are violated. Even now, in the late 20th century, the rape of women continues to be used as an instrument of armed conflict. Women and children make up a large majority of the world’s refugees. And when women are excluded from the political process, they become even more vulnerable to abuse. I believe that now, on the eve of a new millennium, it is time to break the silence. It is time for us to say here in Beijing, and for the world to hear, that it is no longer acceptable to discuss women’s rights as separate from human rights.

These abuses have continued because, for too long, the history of women has been a history of silence. Even today, there are those who are trying to silence our words. But the voices of this conference and of the women at Huairou must be heard loudly and clearly:

It is a violation of human rights when babies are denied food, or drowned, or suffocated, or their spines broken, simply because they are born girls.

It is a violation of human rights when women and girls are sold into the slavery of prostitution for human greed — and the kinds of reasons that are used to justify this practice should no longer be tolerated.

It is a violation of human rights when women are doused with gasoline, set on fire, and burned to death because their marriage dowries are deemed too small.

It is a violation of human rights when individual women are raped in their own communities and when thousands of women are subjected to rape as a tactic or prize of war.

It is a violation of human rights when a leading cause of death worldwide among women ages 14 to 44 is the violence they are subjected to in their own homes by their own relatives.

It is a violation of human rights when young girls are brutalized by the painful and degrading practice of genital mutilation.

It is a violation of human rights when women are denied the right to plan their own families, and that includes being forced to have abortions or being sterilized against their will.

If there is one message that echoes forth from this conference, let it be that human rights are women’s rights and women’s rights are human rights once and for all. Let us not forget that among those rights are the right to speak freely — and the right to be heard.
