Din, Din, Din

Chilly India.

Afgh-Kunar-PRT.jpg

The Obama administration’s recent swing through Asia, featuring Shanghai and Beijing, left behind a bad opinion of POTUS as weak or indifferent or unconfident. What was left out of the trip was India, and now there is the State Dinner at the White House for dry, no-nonsense, low-key India PM Manmohan Singh (above). Again, POTUS makes ceremonial pledges of cooperation and partnership and a new beginning. This is all hokum, and the Indians ignore it. The relationship between Delhi and Washington is touchy. The chief offense is that Richard Holbrooke approached his job as if Kashmir was part of his mission — bring the Indians and Pakistanis to the table, find a solution. Naive hokum. Tunku Varadarajan, DailyBeast.com, told me Sunday 22 that the Indian government enjoyed such warm relations with the Bush administration that the relatively aloof tone of the new team combined with the Hokbrooke pushiness has resulted in a chill. PM Singh is not expected to make mention of the issue. It is just another of those question marks re the Obama administration’s so-called reset.

India in Afghanistan.

What is especially puzzling about the chill between Washington and Delhi is that India is accustomed to working with Afghanistan, contra the rogue Pakistan, and is in a place to be most helpful to the struggle in Kabul for development and stability. India is the regional super power in development (not Iran).  This is the other famous sovereign state of the BRICs.   While the India discomfort with Washington knuckleheadedness continues, POTUS has started the long-form leaking of his Afghanistan decision. At this point there are no secrets, no surprises. The single metric worth watching is how may watch the spech on Monday night. It will be the headline on Tuesday. The White House has put out the tough-guy phrase, “finish the job” to explain POTUS aims. This is advert blither. The facts about the POTUS decision on Afghanistan are not glamorous.  There is a limit to the combat brigades available over the next year.  The Army wants to give combat teams 24 months out of theater before it rotates them back in.  Right now, the Army is 12 months in theater and 12 months in the USA.  It is wrecking families and lives.  The 80k number was fantasy and misdirection.  The airborne unit I spoke to on Saturday 21, in Zabul Province (hour helicopter ride north of Kandahar), has a mission to train an Afghan National Army unit way, way outside the wire.  They are camped in a mud-built fort left by the British when they were lords.  Sending in training units will free the airborne for operations.

Kandahar, Khe Sanh

Early spin says that the Army and Marines will draw a cordon around Kandahar.  Don’t make anymore of it than an incomplete gossip.  The speech next week will be a balm to the anti-war left that wants to rationalize POTUS as a peace president who must clean-up the mess of a war president.  There is no exit from Afghanistan until and if the Taliban is defeated.  The Taiban is camped at Quetta in Pakistan.  The Taliban is linked to the ISI at Rawalpindi.  The whole Pakistan government is soaked with money from the House of Saud.  The short version is that the solution to the Taliban is not at Kandahar.  Now we will pretend that the cordon around the city is the first step to retake the country.  As if this is Dien Bien Phu, as if this is Khe Sanh.  Also, India is part of the solution.  India knows how to train the Afghan National Army.  Ask Din, Din, Din for help, for leadership, for weight.  I am told the work in Afghanistan is a long, troubling road that would require the kind of patience that ISAF and the US do not possess.  India is an empire that knows how to wear down and beat the savages.   Instead we have POTUS making another sonorous, sober, moving and futile speech about war, pivoting to his left as he shields his eyes from the right.  As he is deaf to the tempo of the frontier:

Din! Din! Din!   80
    You Lazarushian-leather Gunga Din!
Tho’ I’ve belted you an’ flayed you,
By the livin’ Gawd that made you,
You’re a better man than I am, Gunga Din!

Given the Soviets’ experience in Afghanistan I have a hard time believing a “military solution” is possible. They threw everything they had at it and still failed. Remember back then…when Osama was our ally? We created that monster.

Short of annihilating the entire populace I see no hope over there. Osama may be evil but he is the evil they know.

  • SHV

PM Manmohan Singh is the father of Amrit Singh, the ACLU attorney who called Obama a liar. I think that she has been telling her dad that Obama is shallow and not to be trusted.

  • http://! stodgie

obama is the evil we don’t now, and that is part of the problem. look obummer is screwing up our relationships with everyone. russia, china, india! ya think there just might be a trend here that ssys something about what a tin ear and lead foot obummber has? i sure do.

the only bigger group of dufuses are the democrats who allowed this.

I am going to ask a silly question now but can anyone explain to me why Obama has to make an address to the Nation from West Point just to inform us of how many troops he will be sending to Afghanistan?

Have mercy could we not just have an address from the oval office if he needs to make one after months of tapping his thumbs. What in heavens name is all this about, does everything have to be glitz , camera, action geez.

    • SuperGalt

We’ve become the US of ON: United States of Obama’s Narcissism. I bet he has an “Ain’t I pretty” placard on his bathroom mirror.

The West Point move is shameful, considering he was absent from the launching of the USS New York forged of 9/11 steel, so he could pretend to be twisting arms to get the health care bill passed in the House, when that was a done deal before he ever stepped foot on Capitol Hill. Its all theatrics with this poser leader.

    • Zut alors

Somewhere, in a parallel universe some hater on their local Obama all-out hate site is saying “why didn’t he make this announcement from amongst our military at West Point?”.

Point is, nothing he will ever do or say will satisfy the regulars here. Which explains the general view of this site.

      • lorac

Point is, nothing he will ever do or say will satisfy the regulars here.

Will anything he ever does or says make YOU turn away from him……?

Galt, how would you put this? “Pot calling the kettle axiom applies”….? :)

        • SuperGalt

          Indeed.

And high five on that one! You nailed that turkey with logic.

She/he needs a new schtick: that “poor baby Obama can’t please anyone on this hate site” meme is so worn out. :D

Perhaps they are still in campaign mode? I have not a clue.

    • lorac

why Obama has to make an address to the Nation from West Point just to inform us of how many troops he will be sending to Afghanistan?

Especially in light of the fact that as soon as he announced that he’d be declaring his decision next week, they immediately started leaking exactly what the decision entails. So why not either state his decision immediately, or wait and not utilize the leaks?

And West Point is students, right? He’s not just speaking to a military audience, he’s speaking to young, future officers. I suspect there’s a reason (to his own benefit) for this choice.

      • TeakWoodKite

What is rich and full of military traditions and history?

West Point comes to mined when one thinks of the generals who fought in the Civil War. Watch a cadet officer takes BO for a Plebe inspite of his rank.

    • creeper

That’s easy. It’s a great excuse for another trip.

    • lorac

could we not just have an address from the oval office

I’m starting to think it may be as simple as him needing his fix. He has always needed the adoring audiences, and as the media coverage(finally) becomes more objective and fact-based, he’s going to need the fixes more than ever. If he gives a speech from his office with just the camera operator, there’s nothing in it for him. Gosh – it might even seem like – WORK!

    • elizabethrc

Well, he certainly doesn’t seem to know where the Oval Office is located.
It’s all about stage setting for effect.
      Phony is as phony does.

  • SuperGalt

Somewhere, in a parallel universe some hater on their local Obama all-out hate site is saying “why didn’t he make this announcement from amongst our military at West Point?”.

I agree, must be a different universe than this one, since this is not an “all-out hate site.”

If one is saying this is an “all-out hate site,” this actually reveals their hatred and disdain for difference of opinion and dissent. They are projecting their hatred via a false assertion, “all-out hate site” not being a fact in evidence, but a biased opinion.

Point is, nothing he will ever do or say will satisfy the regulars here. Which explains the general view of this site.

Dissent is healthy in this and the parallel universe, I hope. :D

    • Zut alors

Come on now Galty. Don’t believe your own spin. The only difference of opinion tolerated dissent in this echo chamber is some leeway as to whether Barack or Michelle hates America more. Anyone who doesn’t buy the Gospel that Obama is totally awful and that Hillary is the one panacea to all life’s ills is instantaneously abused: indianadem, for instance.

This is an all out hate site, no mistake. Witness the feverish whole-sale swallowing of the birth certificate and thesis conspiracies here. This must be why not even politico ever references any words of wisdom written here. And they oftentimes reference even newsmax.

      • lorac

Fact is, there are huge (and growing) numbers of dems/former dems who do not like what Obama is doing. But I suspect you know that, and it’s why you’re here… Calling it a hate site just isn’t going to cut it, sorry.

Did you blog against Bush (many of us here did)? So I guess the sites you went to to fight against Bush were also hate sites….

        • Zut alors

Pulling facts out of your derriere doesn’t count lorac. Nice false premise though. It is a hate site pure and simple.

          • SuperGalt

It is a hate site pure and simple.

            Broken record axiom applies. ;)

          • lorac

            You didn’t answer the questions.

Did you dislike Bush? Were the blog sites you frequented “hate sites”???

And I eat lots of fiber. No need for pulling.

            • SuperGalt

I think the drive by, stray dog taking a dump on the rug – then bolting axiom applies. ;)

            • Zut alors

I assume you meant W? I did dislike much of what he did: especially the lying to justify a war. Never hated him though. But did think he couldn’t care less about the Constitution, privacy and the average person on the street, especially if that person wasn’t a WASP.

              • lorac

Well, we’re saying we don’t hate. You’re saying you didn’t hate Bush. What’s the difference, except your insistence on your OPINION that yours wasn’t hate, but ours is….?

The sites you went to in order to commiserate about Bush are no different than this site.

                • lorac

Oh, and the double-standard axiom aplies.

                  (beat ya, Galt!)

                  • SuperGalt

                    Cool. :D

                • Zut alors

I didn’t go to any sites to commiserate about anything. I came here first about 6 months ago to keep abreast of the rabid anti-Obama conspiracies and find myself coming back to a gawp and chuckle. I guess it’s just a modern freak show.

                  • SuperGalt

Enjoy the show. Its pointless to try and reason with each other. lorac is correct, we say we don’t hate, you say we do.

                  • lorac

find myself coming back to a gawp and chuckle.

But, from what I can tell, we’re having fun with you, but you’re not having fun. Let’s hear some chuckles! Share the fun!

                    Ooops… I forgot we’re Haters from a Parallel Universe – haters don’t have fun. I forgot my place…. shucks.

                    • SuperGalt

Broomstickectomy is required! Paging Dr. Howard, Dr. Fine, Dr. Howard! :D

          • TeakWoodKite

I like to consider myself one of “the ir-regulars here”.

And in lorac defense, (like she needs any!) it doesn’t matter where the facts come from. They are just that.

Galt is spot on, but that is the journey to the dark you’ve taken.

          • elizabethrc

So what? If that’s what you think, why don’t you stop frequenting the site? What do you hope to accomplish here? Surely you don’t think you’ve said anything so far which will change anyone’s opinion!

        • SuperGalt

Tag team anti-trolls are us! :D

          • lorac

I know – I told you I have to fight myself from breaking my own suggestion of ignoring them lol

But I’m thinking the other troll, FF, is outsourced. The hyperbole is so over the top (I guess that’s redundant), I’m thinking he’s sitting in a telemarketing site in India lol

            • SuperGalt

              :D

      • SuperGalt

        Don’t believe your own spin.

To quote lorac thinking how I might state something:

“Pot calling the kettle axiom applies.”

Seriously, none of this matters. The perception of the media and electorate is turning against your horse in the race. This is what you get when you bet all your dough on the wrong horse. Try taking personal responsibility for a change and don’t shift the blame to this blog of freedom lovers you despise so much.

        • Zut alors

Aaaah the wishful thinking again. Obama is not really going to win a popularity contest against pol pot here but he will be POTUS till 2016. Happy Thanksgiving. He is doing a fine job given the multiple layers of pain he inherited and despite those Dems (like Lieberman and the “dems” here) who have issue with a new generation taking over.

          • SuperGalt

Yeah we get it, this is a hate site and Obama can do no wrong, in your opinion. Seems like masturbation to me, since you are the only one enjoying the “sex.” Is there some kind of Freudian thing going on? :D

            • Zut alors

Tedious straw man galty. Never said Obama can do no wrong as I don’t belive that. But I continue to belive he is doing a good job. You lot think he can do no right, which is the only point I made.

              • SuperGalt

Its a “straw person.” One wishes to be PC, no?

                • NomNomNom

                  specieist. “straw creature”

                  • SuperGalt

                    animalist. “Straw living organism”

                    or actually

                    “Straw living organismally challenged”

                    Since straw is dead. :D

                    • NomNomNom

lol, it is a paradox, straw being.
we need a new mystery cult.

                    • NomNomNom

I hear there are some used columns going on sale this Friday.

                    • SuperGalt

I think one of the drive by, rug pooping dogs took a leak on them though…

                    • TeakWoodKite

I am still trying to find them. I want to purchase them. I think they would look nice in the front yard.

Let me know if they are found. Guess I should go undercover to find them…

Deep below the White house the red phone rang on a marble desk next to the “Lost Columns”.
It went unanswered. The whereabouts of the columns remained classified to this day.

                      .

            • lorac

Galt, I think it’s the “hate site accusal” week. They’re giving us a short break from the “racism accusal” meme.

              Eh, a little variety.

          • lorac

with a new generation taking over.

Many of us are his age. It was so amusing during the election, that we were all “old and bitter”, but he was “young and vibrant”. I guess when you spend your life coasting, you don’t age. When you work hard and get experience and wisdom, you’re of no use (to sophomoric youth and the wannabes).

            • SuperGalt

Many of us are his age

Convenient fact ignored axiom applies? ;)

Kind of hard to create a dog poop axiom out of that one.

Yesterday I saw a gospel cd in a music store called
        In Praise of Barack Obama
Cults are sick things and really not good for the country.

Taliban may yet be defeated in spite of Obama’s dithering.

Veritable criminal incompetence might be a good descriptor as well.

it’s very perplexing to see all this talk about India and the war in Afghanistan and see no mention of the fact they offered 120,000 troops last December for the Afghanistan war.
    http://forums.military.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/672198221/m/2550016012001
perhaps this fact would make it blindingly obvious that India has its own agenda for Afghanistan and Pakistan, and it has nothing to do with us, except as a means to an end; and also that we have no interest in “stabilizing” Afghanistan unless we are at the head of their new government. perpetual war is ever so much more lucrative.

  • I’m a Linda too

The guy never mastered speaking. He is resorting to reading his speech from paper, instead of teleprompters for the up close pressers and he can’t do it. He literally reads, he doesn’t have a clue what his speeches say or bother to memorize them.

He couldn’t even “toast” the PM of India withou reading his paper. Now that’s bad.
