I’m Glad You Finally Made it to Europe, Barack

Jake Tapper’s story today is Obama On Tonight’s Berlin Speech: “A Crapshoot”. Last week, the razor-sharp Tapper zeroed in on a story that we’ve covered here at No Quarter many times. Joe Wilson, Larry Johnson and I, as well as other writers, have all noted that Obama has failed to DO HIS JOB as Chair of the Subcommittee on European Affairs (including NATO) — holding no hearings and making no trips to Europe during his tenure as chair because, as he admitted in a primary debate, he’s been too busy running for president:

Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Joe Biden, D-Del., had previously told Meet the Press that "the reason Obama didn’t hold a hearing on NATO, I chair the committee. Every one of those committee hearings are held at full committee."

But today [July 17, 2008] Biden decided to take his defense of Obama one step further, writing to DeMint that there have been plenty of hearings on European Affairs, they’ve just been held at the "full committee level."

"On the particular issue of NATO’s mission in Afghanistan," Biden wrote, "We have held three Full Committee hearings in the last 22 months: one under Senator Lugar’s chairmanship (September 21, 2006: “From Coalition to ISAF Command in Afghanistan: The Purpose and Impact of the Transition”), and two undermine (March 8, 2007: “Afghanistan: Time for a New Strategy?” and January 21, 2008: “Afghanistan: A Plan to Turn the Tide?”).  At all three of these hearings, we were fortunate enough to have the expert testimony—in addition to other witnesses, both in and out of government— of former NATO commander and Supreme Allied Commander-Europe, Gen. James R. Jones (USMC, ret.)."

But Biden’s letter brought attention to the fact that Obama did not attend two of those three hearings — and for the third, on March 8, 2007, Obama only asked one question, one unrelated to Afghanistan. …

Don’t miss how Jake Tapper knows that Obama asked only one question, irrelevant to Afghanistan:

How do I know the latter fact? From an August 2007 press release from Biden himself, when he was running for president.

"BIDEN CAMPAIGN CONGRATULATES SEN. OBAMA FOR JOHNNY-COME-LATELY POSITION," it read. Noting that at the March 2007 hearing, "Sen. Obama asked one question that was unrelated to Taliban or Afghanistan."

Thanks, Joe!

Maureen Dowd notes an unintended consequence of Mr. Obama’s popularity in Europe that will create consternation among voters in the U.S.:

Even if Obama is treated as a superstar by W.-weary Europeans, some Obama-wary Americans may wonder what he’s doing there, when they can’t pay for gas, when the dollar is the Euro’s chew toy, when Bud is going Belgian and when the Chrysler Building has Arab landlords.

“I don’t know that people in Missouri are going to like seeing tens of thousands of Europeans screaming for The One,” a McCain aide snarked to The Politico.

Susan, it’s all photo-op with Barack:

    Hello everyone,

As you know I am not a very political person. I just wanted to pass along that Senator Obama came to Bagram Afghanistan for about an hour on his visit to ‘ The War Zone ‘ . I wanted to share with you what happened.

He got off the plane and got into a bullet proof vehicle, got to the area to meet with the Major General (2 Star) who is the commander here at Bagram.

As the Soldiers where lined up to shake his hand, he blew them off and didn’t say a word as he went into the conference room to meet the General. As he finished, the vehicles took him to the ClamShell (pretty much a big top tent that military personnel can play basketball or work out in with weights) so he could take his publicity pictures playing basketball. He again shunned the opportunity to talk to Soldiers to thank them for their service.

So really he was just here to make a showing for the Americans back home that he is their candidate for President. I think that if you are going to make an effort to come all the way over here you would thank those that are providing the freedom that they are providing for you.

I swear we got more thanks from the NBA Basketball Players or the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders than from one of the Senators, who wants to be the President of the United States . I just don’t understand how anyone would want him to be our Commander-and-Chief. It was almost that he was scared to be around those that provide the freedom for him and our great country.

If this is blunt and to the point I am sorry but I wanted you all to know what kind of caliber of person he really is. What you see in the news is all fake.

    In service,

This is a message to the blog owner at “Blackfive.” The owner had 16 years of military service. If one reads his “about” page he’s a totally convincing person, and he just happens to really care about this country and the military. Read a few of the stories — they are about the heroes one never reads about. I don’t think he had any axe to grind.

  • Can’t stand Obama crybabies.

Completely unimpressed by the world tour and angry at his snubbing the wounded vets.

Obama senior adviser Robert Gibbs told us in a statement, “During his trip as part of the CODEL to Afghanistan and Iraq, Senator Obama visited the combat support hospital in the Green Zone in Baghdad and had a number of other visits with the troops.

For the second part of his trip, the senator wanted to visit the men and women at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center to express his gratitude for their service and sacrifice.

The senator decided out of respect for these servicemen and women that it would be inappropriate to make a stop to visit troops at a U.S. military facility as part of a trip funded by the campaign.”

  • Urban HIllbilly

Obama’s had like 15 minutes of fame and already overexposed.

  • Andrew

Obama is disgraceful. I am definitely moving if Obama becomes president. He is so pompous and condescending, apologizing for the United States. He can go fuck himself. I am so astonished that people are not as outraged as me. God help us!

  • Patriotparty11

I am sooooooooooooo F___ing sick of Obama telling people that America sucks!!!
He is telling the Germans, that number 1, he does not look like other Americans who have been there.

Then he tells them how embarrased he is of us and all of the things we suck at and do wrong.

This guy needs a Dixie Chick reaction. He should be ostracized, and told to shut the Hell up!!

What walls is he talking about?? Reagan stealing hack!! I hated Reagan, but this guy should not even be allowed to say his name.

And the campaign signs at the Western Wall!!!! Just who does he think he is, this is the holiest site in the world and his campaign is plastering it, desecrating it with their God awful anti-american campaign signs.

Has anyone seen an American flag in anything he is doing? I see his sign, and his slogan, but no American flags.

  • roseeriter

Oh we’re plenty outraged. We’re not Party Loyalists over here. We see the Dems for Obama as just as stupid as the repugs for Bush.

Maybe one of these days clear thinking American Citizens will actually do something to get our country back. Tea Party anyone?

  • katmandu

“America, this is our moment. This is our time” – Obama, speaking in MN the night he officially won the Dem nomination (6/3).

“People of Berlin — people of the world — this is our moment. This is our time” – Obama, in his first formal speech of his foreign tour (7/24).

So here’s my chance to get in on the game –

I will be collecting money to buy transportation out of the country for anyone that wishes to leave the country in 2009, when Obama takes the oath of office.

  • Not Here, Not Now

Well, what did ya expect? Soldiers are members of the God-and-gun clinging bitter folk that Obama has no time for unless we’re talking about a photo-op. He’s like the phony Hollywood craphead who wants to “thank all the little people” when he/she wins the Oscar but spits on them the rest of the time.

Obama: if it weren’t for sh*t, he’d have no brains at all!

    An important article.

Old, grumpy McCain is catching up on Internet warfare!!!
    http://www.alleyinsider.com/2008/7/is-barack-obama-losing-his-youtube-mojo-

Is Barack Obama Losing His YouTube Mojo?
If elections were held on YouTube, Barack Obama would win hands-down — so far. But the McCain campaign is making inroads on the Web, aided by some good old-fashioned attack ads.

McCain has beaten Obama in terms of viewers on YouTube (GOOG) on four of the last six days, thanks to the success of two ads: “Obama Love,” a montage of press fauning over Obama, and “Pump”, which blames Obama for high gas prices. The former has been viewed more than 176,000 times in two days, and the latter 140,000 times in three days.

To get a sense of how rare this is, McCain has beaten Obama on just two other days in video views since the campaign began: February 11, 2008 and November 29, 2007, according to TubeMogul. Thanks to his clever and aggressive use of video and obvious appeal to the YouTube generation, Obama has owned Web video: His clips have been watched 56 million times since the campaign began; McCain’s have been watched 4.5 million times.

But McCain’s team seems to be figuring out Web video. Or at the very least, they’re having a good week, according to TubeMogul:

But McCain’s team seems to be figuring out Web video. Or at the very least, they’re having a good week, according to TubeMogul:

Obama’s team of 50 video producers shoot thousands of documentary-like footage, and uploading videos at a breakneck pace. The Obama campaign’s YouTube channel has 1,177 videos, compared to McCain’s 224.

But McCain’s videos reflect a big difference in strategy. They consist of speeches and attack ads either made for the Web, like “Obama Love” or repurposed from TV, like “Pump.” The old wisdom is that the YouTube generation isn’t swayed by over-produced political propaganda. But then, with 83 million unique users, the YouTube generation is starting to look more like America. Here’s a look at the two that took down Obama this week:

Someone ran out of KY last night and is still feeling the after effects…

    Meanwhile, according to Spiegel:
    http://www.spiegel.de/international/germany/0,1518,567821,00.html
++ Visit to US Military Bases Cancelled ++

1:42 p.m.: SPIEGEL ONLINE has learned that Obama has cancelled a planned short visit to the Rammstein and Landstuhl US military bases in the southwest German state of Rhineland-Palatinate. The visits were planned for Friday. “Barack Obama will not be coming to us,” a spokesperson for the US military hospital in Landstuhl announced. “I don’t know why.” Shortly before the same spokeswoman had announced a planned visit by Obama.

  • NancyA

“The senator decided out of respect for these servicemen and women that it would be inappropriate to make a stop to visit troops at a U.S. military facility as part of a trip funded by the campaign.”

What total BS! The truth, I bet, is that he didn’t want to “waste” so much time with the soldiers when he had a grandiose speech to give in Berlin.

P.S. How many times has Obama visited Walter Reed? He IS on the Veterans committee, after all.

  • MaryPat

Krauthammer is the consummate right-winger, but he’s frequently brilliant in exposing Barry for the arrogant fraud he truly is. Yesterday he said that the treatment Obama is receiving on the big trip is not so much presidential as “papal”…wanted to know if Backtrack would be giving a speech in Germany, or saying Mass!

  • Zeke

How do you think it would look if that sonofabitch was to extend his hand for a shake and the soldier just stared him in the eye?
He wouldn’t risk being called the things he is by the men and women serving.

  • hank48188

How about posting the video of Obama’s Press Conference in Israel yesterday, i think it lasted maybe 15 minutes but the very being was the most telling part about Obama, the person and leader. First thing he said was “See that guy over there, he will be calling on reporters to ask a question, if he doesn’t call on you it’s not my fault, I WANT YOU ALL TO LIKE ME” Said like the perfect “People Pleaser”, can’t even make a decision as to who to call on and he wants the position of DECIDER???

  • workingclass artist

    Hmmmm….How very GLOBAL of him…..chuckle….

  • katmandu

Politico just skewered him for this:

    http://www.politico.com/blogs/jonathanmartin/0708/Obama_cancels_troop_visit.html?showall

    [excerpted]

The optics here are not good: Obama has time to get in a workout and give a speech to a crowd mostly comprised of Europeans, but can’t be bothered to visit American troops wounded in action recovering at a military hospital.

Obama’s explanation strikes at much of the criticism he’s gotten from McCain and the GOP.

“The senator decided out of respect for these servicemen and women that it would be inappropriate to make a stop to visit troops at a U.S. military facility as part of a trip funded by the campaign,” explains spokesman Robert Gibbs.

This is a sticky wicket for Obama.

On the one hand, he’s been criticized for the (laughable) contention that the trip is not related to the campaign. To clearly delineate those elements of the tour that are related to his role as a senator and those that are undeniably political would seem to be a way to respond to that critique and seperate church from state. Moreover, he’s being doubly safe by avoiding the perception of campaigning in a military hospital and using wounded troops as props.

But then how many politicians include official stops in the course of a trip otherwise related to a campaign (think POTUS or a member of Congress doing fundraising and public business on the same day). Further, Obama met with German Chancellor Angela Merkel on this, the campaign-funded, part of his trek. If that was deemed ok, than are we to assume that each of his get-togethers with European leaders is political in nature?

Assuming their rationale was on the level and not just cover to give the candidate a breather, the easier move may have been to still visit Rammstein and Landstuhl but keep the press behind.

  • http://nobho.blogspot.com/ Johnny at Work

“Obama noted that in a break from his whirlwind schedule, “we’ve got some down time tonight. What are you guys (the press corps) gonna do in Berlin? Huh? Huh? You guys got any big. plans? …I’ve never been to Berlin, so…I would love to tour around a little bit.”
    http://blogs.abcnews.com/politicalpunch/2008/07/obama-on-tonigh.html

Ibama has no time to see the soldiers and wounded in Berlin because he wants to take in the sites.

I was a peaceful young man who became a lethal one because I could see that writing on the wall.
Well, the writing is there again and I shall not sit idly by. I am not alone in my beliefs and know that if an attempt is made by a future President Obama to place a military force inside the borders of MY country, that there will be blood. Theirs.

“Will Media Report Concert Before Obama’s Berlin Speech?
By Noel Sheppard (Bio | Archive)
    July 24, 2008 – 13:38 ET

Remember back in May when media gushed and fawned over a huge crowd in Portland, Oregon — supposedly gathered to hear the words of Democrat presidential candidate Barack Obama — but chose not to report the free concert given before his speech?

Well, it has been learned that before the presumptive Democrat nominee spoke to a crowd in Berlin Thursday, two popular German acts — reggae artist Patrice and rock band Reamonn — entertained the gathering audience.

Will media report this tonight, or just gush and fawn over the huge crowd again?”

    Anyone see a pattern here?

Obama can’t admit that the surge was a success and turned the situation in Iraq around.

Obama refuses to credit U.S. troops for their part in the success of the surge during his first trip to Iraq since the surge began (and succeeded).

Obama can’t be bothered to greet or shake the hands of soldiers lined up to greet him in Afghanistan.

Obama refuses to credit the work of the troops in the success of the surge while in Iraq.

Obama cancels planned visits to Rammstein and Landstuhl US military bases while in Germany.

His Narcissistic Personality Disorder is showing. One of the signs is attempts to distance yourself from, seek revenge upon, or denigrate those who may expose your weakness.

“Narcissistic personality disorder is a condition characterized by an inflated sense of self-importance, need for admiration, extreme self-involvement, and lack of empathy for others. Individuals with this disorder are usually arrogantly self-assured and confident. They expect to be noticed as superior. Many highly successful individuals might be considered narcissistic. However, this disorder is only diagnosed when these behaviors become persistent and very disabling or distressing.

. . . Vulnerability in self-esteem makes individuals with this disorder very sensitive to criticism or defeat.”

Is anyone following this story on congressman Wexler? Apparently the great Florida rep who testified before the rules committee on the solution to Florida representation at the Democratic Convention, does NOT even live in the district nor state he was elected to represent. He is apparently using his in-laws address in Delray Beach as his address. This is from the guy who said we had to follow the ruuullles on primary vote in Florida and not award the delegates to Hillary Clinton. This hypocrite does not even live there! My family does (W.Palm Beach) and they are outraged to have been sand bagged by this fraud.

I, for one, am thankful that he’s not visiting anymore of our soldiers. They do not deserve the disdain of a man that hopes to become their CINC. His actions has further incited me at a time when my husband is serving away from home.

How many times can someone say they’re sickened, disgusted, horrified, and angered by this man?

No other person running for President in the past, Republican or Democrat, has stirred such a loathing in my heart.

I was struck by his comment to Fareed Zakaria “You know, the truth is that this was an example where we had some poor phrasing in the speech.” Not “I”, “we”. Nothing like putting part of the blame on someone else. Of course he has chosen a 26 year-old to be his head speech writer so it is no wonder neither one of them knows what they are talking about.

I have been noting that as well. No other candidate in history, and certainly none of the candidates in this cycle have been described with such similar loathing.

I think I heard on Fox that there were two warm-up bands before his speech.

  • BernieO

I always predicted that as soon as Bush was out of office that whole ranch schtick would be history. Sure enough they are looking for a house in Dallas. He blames this on Laura, but he only bought the ranch after he decided to run for president. If he really liked that lifestyle so much he would have had a place like that long before. Not like he couldn’t afford a second home.
The media let him get away with pretending to be a cowboy so he could appear Reaganesque. Vincente Fox called him on this when he wrote his memoir. He mocked Bush for not being able to even ride a horse. In fact, he said Bush seemed to be afraid of them.
What a phoney. And what losers are media are for falling for this kind of garbage again and again.

Obama’s speech was wholly average, filled with platitudes, equating Germany with Europe and ignoring any of the real trans-atlantic issues (probably because he does not grasp them).
The crowd was mostly young and half-hearted in its applause and attempts to get “Obama” and “yes we can” chants going.
    A damp squid. Boring.

No doubt the speech will therefore be hailed as insightful, profound, thoughtful, ground-breaking and building bridges with Europe. Don’t believe a word of it.

As our President Bill Clinton said it and all the press and Obama gang attacked him and called him racist:

It is all Fairy Tale, when the dust settles, the Americans will see the true Obama and his gang. The Fairy Tale.

If you really want to know what happened, please read the column from the Cpt J Susan in Bagram, as we go on the truth will be filtered out. Also, watch the BBC News.

Obama is a joke. Read and look for the substace of the speech, we the people in USA will be voting, not those he is talking to in Europe. What a joke.

Please vote for Sen. John MacCain. That will give our Sen. Hillary Clinton the chance to run for the Presidencey in 2012. Please do not vote for Sen. Obama by writing in Sen. Hillary Clinton, it is by default voting for Obama, if you chose to, use it wisely it is your vote. Do not waste your vote by writting her name in the ballot is wasting the vote, if her name is not on the ballot. You have to vote to get the result you want. Since, Sen. Hillary Clinton does not want to run as an independent. We have to effect the result to give her a chance to run soon in 2012. She, Sen. Hillary Clinton is the most qualified to be the President of the free world.

He is a lot like Bush in this. I remember being shocked to read that as governor Bush would show up around 9 or so, work for a couple of hours, then take a LONG lunch break to exercise, eat and goof off. Then he would return to work until five. The man actually brags about how efficient he is! He still goes to bed early as president. Like he could get away with this crap if he didn’t have a staff working overtime to take care of things.

I heard the other day that Obama had worked out three times in one day for a total of about 3 hours and was creeped out. That is soooo like Bush. Granted Barack is smarter and not a right winger, but he shows the same excessive self-regard and overconfidence in his own judgment. The Jewish Vote May Be Obama’s Undoing

New Gallup poll data indicate that he leads Sen. John McCain, the presumptive Republican nominee, by 60 percent to 33 percent among Jewish voters.

In 2004, Sen. John F. Kerry won 74 percent. In 2000, Al Gore won 79 percent, about what Bill Clinton took in 1996 and 1992.

Jonathan Sarna, a historian of American Jewry, said that Carter was the only Democrat in many decades who won the presidency — in 1976 — with less than 70 percent of U.S. Jews supporting him.

As of today, Obama is 10 points shy of that benchmark.

Heck, unifying REAL progressives/liberals and moderately conservative Democrats. That’s what has amazed me so much about Hillary this campaign. Real progressives/liberals like me supporting Hillary is obvious- she is a true progressive, votes and acts the way she speaks. I was surprised that she garnered as much passionate support from moderately conservative Democrats too, but I guess it’s like my four times great grandfather who was an abolitionist politician from Russelville,Kentucky (an area of the state that split violently during the Civil War- literally brother againist brother) He and his family were essentially refugees in southern Indiana (at the home of a friend) during the war. But after the war the family returned to Russellville and my four times great grandfather became a highly respected man in the community. (He lived as he spoke, and I believe that impressed even those who felt differently.)

Maybe another good thing that has come out of this is that moderately conservative Democrats won’t blanket denounce progressive/liberal people. They know now there is a difference between the elitist fakers like Obama, Kos, the hosts of shows on Air America, Arianna Hoffington, Keith Olbermann, and real progressives like Hillary and we progressives that have backed her.

Laura, former Democrat that she is, hated the place, and who can blame her? It was a shitty, hot, stage set for Bush. What it had going for it was ACREAGE–made it tough for the media to get close.

If he’d not been afraid of horses (“Hees hand, it was trrrembuling when he had to, you know, pat thee horse!!” said Vincente Fox, when he invited the Horsiephobic George to go riding with him–George declined the offer, and blamed it on the Secret Service not letting him “endanger” himself, though the horse Fox had chosen for him was an old nag and he tells the Secret Service what level of protection he wants, not the other way around) he might have pulled off the “Reagans on horseback” image–but he just didn’t have it in him.
