Who?

The terror attack on the Nevsky Express from Petersburg to Moscow is the same as attacking the Metroliner on the New York to Washington run, a major stab at the comity of the Russian Federation.

My information is that it was jihad-related.

A renegade military munitions expert named Kosalapov who went over to the notorious, romantic, homicidal Shamil Besayev and the Chechen diehards. Basayev was slain in 2007 by a Russian op that intercepted him on his way to a massive martyr operation in Petersburg.

The Russians have been hunting Kosalapov since 2006. The man-hunt is ceaseless but likely futile.

The Chechens have joined the jihad in Iraq, Afghanistan, Somalia. Vladimir Putin rose swiftly by boasting he would got through an “outhouse) to get the Chechens.

Basayev’s ghost haunts Russia.

thanks for covering this, I’m surprised it’s not being blogged about more widely.
I read that the head of the Russian Federal Reserve was among those killed as well as a couple of diplomats (not suggesting any conspiracy theory, Nevsky is a luxury train).
There are last I read, 39 dead, 102 injured and 18 still missing.

no he won’t: Putin has upheld the moratorium on the death penalty in Russia repeatedly, and they are preparing to remove it from the books because of its confliction with international laws to which they are party.

I found it. I went to KFSO’s feed and listened. HOWEVER, that said, I had a HECK of a time finding the show. And i must add that I do find it daunting to find radio shows via iTunes. For a Mac product, it sure is complicated to use. I couldn’t even use the search engine, which was grayed out for some reason.

Next week, i’ll rewrite the instructions to make it easier for people to find John’s show. His instructions are, um, okay, but there are some incorrectly stated terms and he does not include every step that is required. (I used to write customer guides for tech products, and pride myself on writing instructions that people can follow. So, i hope my instructions next week will make it easier for all of us.)

I’m confused. How is Chechen independence related to jihad? I thought Chechnya was about oil and the fact that an independent Chechnya would encourage other nearby regions to break free of Russian rule (more oil, and perhaps some natural gas pipeline disputes).

Joining an alliance for support against a larger threat is not the same as declaring a religious war.

Chechen independence started as a separatist movement, but it is also a muslim separatist movement, muslim separatist movements are also occurring in neighboring Ingushetia & Daghestan. The Chechen independence movement is also connected to the Obshchina (funding at the least). Russians claim Chechnya is a haven for jihadis. There have been several extremely large hostage takings by the Chechens (Budyonnovsk 1995, Kizlar 1996, the Moscow Theater 2002 and Beslan 2004): the Russians have tried for years to get the US onboard with the idea that their problems with Chechnya should be part of the “global war on terror”. Some of the everyday violence in Chechnya is promulgated under the name not of separatism, but muslim separatism.

Thank you for the information. It seems to me that adding the dimension of religion is a way for people (on both sides) to gain sympathies and alliances. It’s really about oil–money–isn’t it?

yes they have oil, gas, & minerals (same Daghestan & Ingushetia); but also it’s partly because of pipelineistan: Chechnya & Daghestan both obviate Russia’s having to run a pipeline through Georgia or use the Caspian to transport oil & gas from Azerbaijan.

Nice links. It is dangerous to get people worked up about a supposed religious jihad when the issue is really about wealth. IMHO, it confuses people and is irresponsible.

The Russians want us to think this should be part of ‘the global war on terror’ when it is really about their economic benefit.
