David Gergen on the Maliki “Leak”

“…Barack Obama made the first mistake of his trip, in my judgment, in releasing a statement in which he said exactly what Maliki had said in those conversations. We have a long tradition in this country that we only have one president at a time. He’s the commander in chief and the negotiator in chief. I cannot remember a campaign which a rival seeking the presidency has been in a position negotiating a war that’s under way with another party outside the country.”

I have complete confidence that Hillary Clinton would have the judgment not to release such remarks or place herself “in a position negotiating a war that’s under way with another party outside the country.”

I think Bush has been quite patient with the candidate in chief. Maliki said — I spoke with Bush last Friday and we negotiated a deal and I am satisfied. About Obama he said that Obama should come back when we learns more.

      Are you sure he knows he is running for President? During his press conference in Jordan, where Chicago News Network (CNN) did not air the questions of the reporters-only Obama’s answers, he kept refering to himself as WE. I felt this to be reminiscent of a Kingship and not a PRESIDENCY!

        One of the most ineffective (and lazy a$$) bosses I ever had used “we” when he spoke of his grand plans. Nothing ever got done. No one ever knew what the hell they were suppose to do to move the ball forward. Does “we” mean the boss will do it? Does “we” mean I should start on it? Does “we” mean Bob? Does “we” mean Kathy?
        We figured out real quick “we” just meant he was bullshitting. ALL TALK, NO ACTION REQUIRED.

    Obama does not seem to understand that he is not our President. In so very many ways he has shown that he is not presidential material–this is just another example. His style is of an autocratic self-proclaimed king.

    I think too many people do not realize just how fragile democracy is. I see so many cracks in it over the last 7 years–and it might fall completely apart with an Obama reign.

      Obama seems to believe (you know, “Change you can believe in”) he is the president. His mind is already there which is probably why he’s so prickly when questioned or when a reporter reminds him during questioning that he’s actually not even the nominee yet!!

          Delusions of grandeur is a very polite way of stating something far more serious as it applies to his ability to run his own campaign, let alone the country:

          This man has a fragile hold on reality.
          I’ve seen the posts that refer to his “mental illness”, and trust me, that is not a subject I take lightly.         Was referring to the hostages taken by the Iranians during the Carter years. Carter had negotiated their release. However, Reagan/Bush I campaign negotiated a secret deal behind Carters back. So the hostages were held for another 3 months, until Reagan was sworn in.

The latest Rasmussen Reports telephone survey in the Buckeye State shows McCain attracting 46% of the vote while Obama earns 40%. Last month and the month before McCain held a insignificant one-point lead over Obama.

    Seven percent (7%) of voters say they’d prefer a third party candidate over either McCain or Obama and another 7% remain undecided.

    When “leaners” are included in the totals, McCain leads Obama 52% to 42%.

    I do agree with David. And Candy, in her earlier piece, talked about walking the fine line between being this candidate and being presumptuous. And I think that he may just have crossed that, because, you know, it is a tradition. You don’t talk about these private conversations.

    And it’s not up to Barack Obama right now to negotiate troop withdrawals. It’s up to Barack Obama to be on a fact-finding mission, which is indeed what he has said he was on.

    I hate the war. I hate that we ever invaded Iraq. I want us out yesterday. My focus isn’t on winning or losing the war. However, we have to finish what we started. And if Obama thinks it’s okie dokie to pull out our combat troops and there is suddenly peace in Iraq, he’s crazy. He supports having residual troops there. I don’t like the idea of a small number of troops over there (residual or not) when the situation is still so volatile. Judas Richardson (in my opinion) had the best idea IF you are going to pull out…no residual troops.

    And then they tell us McCain WANTS to be there for another 100 years. I heard an Obama supporter on CNN saying that again today. she said McCain wants to stay there for 100 years, or a 1000 years. I never heard him say he wanted to. I thought Obama supporters were supposed to be the more educated bunch. But they seem to think that you can live for over 100 (now 1000) years. And they obviously think you can be president for that long too.

    Both of those were much worse actions. In fact, Nixon’s meddling led to the war being prolonged and millions more deaths.
    If Obama is meddling–and I think he is—-he is only following the lead of a long line of Republicans. Of course, since I think Obama really IS a Republican, that doesn’t surprise me.

A prominent political pundit and regular commentator in the mainstream media now has to apologize in advance for making one statement critical of Barack Obama? This is ludicrous, folks. Obama is not even a presidential NOMINEE, but he already thinks he’s the president. He knows nothing about foreign policy, but he has infinite confidence in his brand-spanking new foreign policy “credentials.” More dangerous than the man who knows nothing is the man who doesn’t know what he doesn’t know.

    Wow, if the above is true, this is really odd because when Rev. Wright made a trip to Libya with Farrakhan, the very year Obama was elected to the Illinois Senate, when Qaddifi met with Wright and the LOI, Qaddifi said that Muslims would now have someone inside the U.S. working for their cause (and I paraphrase here – it was actually scarier, as I recall, and I’m not sure if Farrakhan said it, or Qaddifi, but I believe that it was the latter). I’m going to have to find for the link to it. Not good.

      He has done a stellar job of uniting Hillary Dems and McCain republicans, though. And that is a good thing. Maybe this is the election when the centrists of both parties will be able to steer back to middle from extreme left and right.

      McCain took a lot of heat from the hard right in his own party, but it looks like the Old War Horse was smarter than anyone knew.

        Depends on which Republicans you’re referring to when discussing Hillary. Conservatives–hell no! Everyone else–perhaps.

        As one of my Republican friends said this morning, McCain would do better selecting Guiliani over Romney or Huckabee. Personally, if McCain chooses Romney–I’m totally screwed because I don’t like Romney at all.

        I do not believe that Hillary would jump ship and run with McCain. She’s dedicated to the Democrats and geniunely seems to agree with the platform of the party (pre-Dean). Unless McCain and the RNC promised Hillary that her concerns and issues she has always championed are a priority or near the top, I don’t see it happening.

        HOWEVER—there’s Bill.

        Bill is a loyalist type of person. If you’re loyal to him and his family, he’ll return the favor. Although, it didn’t do squat for him in regards to Richardson and so many others.

        I believe Bill and John McCain geniunely like each other from behind the scenes stories that I’ve heard, but again that’s hearsay.

        If Obama chooses Lugar as VP (which I don’t see happening), then it might not be a tough sell to Republicans for Hillary to join the ticket. After all, the goal for most Republicans is not to see Obama in the White House. With the media shoving Obama down our throats it might not be too terribly difficult at all.

            Among Republicans, many are betting that it will be Romney.

            If you want to bring the country together, McCain will need Hillary or Lieberman. I don’t believe either wants to join the Republican ticket.

            If he wants to divide the Republican party, he will choose Romney, Guiliani, or Huckabee.

            I like Guiliani and could live with that choice. The other two will be very difficult for me and my friends.

            At this point, I hope he nominates Russ Feingold. I like Russ for some reason. Always have and always will.

                I’d love Olympia Snowe as McCain’s VP, but no one else seems to be thinking along these lines. But as for accomplished females and moderates, there’s no better choice. I don’t like Romney, Giuliani or Huckabee.

We’re all FReepers, but we’re finding ourselves disgusted by fellow FReepers who are refusing to vote for McCain. You don’t vote for McCain and you’re basically ensuring an Obama Presidency. No thank you!

            We have thoroughly enjoyed reading everyone’s posts. Although, we could do without Ted’s postings; but he’s amusing for entertainment purposes.

    Gergen still has a long way to go to make up for his “Hillary should have a press conference and tell people that she doesn’t want their racially motivated votes”. That was ths final straw for me and CNN. They never even asked why the votes were racially motivated. Was it because of Rev Wright ? Was it because AA were voting for Obama at a 92% clip? You can not call people racist without knowing why they feel the way they do. God I wanted to punch that duse in the face right thru my TV.

    I don’t care for Bush and his gang at all but the fact remains he is POTUS and NOT OBAMA. Once again Obama goes around acting grandiose with absolutely no legitimate authority to do so (while Hillary is in the senate fighting for women’s reproductive rights). It is unbelieveable that a presumptive nominee for a political party can be galavanting around the nation and world acting like he is POTUS and the media somehow thinking this is appropriate. Obviously Obama and the media lack the basic knowledge of what it means to be part of a democratic country where you have one president. The narcissism of this man never ceases to amaze me and I am not a scholar of political science. I am just an average American voter who is shocked at the arrogance I see in this young man who has little on his resume that qualifies him for senator no less POTUS. Looking forward to tomorrow’s arrogant behavior as always.

    I wrote a letter to the NY Times because Obama wrote an NYT Op-Ed about the Iraq War about a week before he went. I was bothered by the fact that he would write his position on Iraq before be went and thought his words would be much more effective if he had written that Op-Ed after his trip. Obama is a man that gets his ideas from selective reading and listening to others but not from experience, which is dangerous. Bush Jr. was like that and he got us into a lot of trouble. I think it will take more than one PR trip to the Middle East before Obama can understand the scope of what the issues are. We need to demand far more of Obama than we did of Bush if we want to avoid the same pitfalls. They both lack(ed) accomplishments and experience to qualify as president. We should not make the same mistake twice. The media is favoring Obama the same way they favored Bush. We need to expect more from our politicians and our media.
