Sarah Cracks ‘Em Up At Gridiron Dinner

From Sarah Palin’s speech tonight — no video (yet) — AP News:

WASHINGTON (AP) – Sarah Palin poked fun at herself in a speech to journalists Saturday night, drawing laughter when she announced she “came down from my hotel room and I could see the Russian embassy.”

The 2008 Republican vice presidential candidate also joked that she had orginally thought of titling her book “How To Look Like a Million Bucks, or Only $150,000″ before settling on “Going Rogue.” In one of the controversies surrounding her candidacy, the campaign spent about $150,000 on her wardrobe. …

Now, from Politico‘s story:

As for the president, Palin joked that she was looking at a magazine cover of Obama and Chinese president Hu Jinato during an airplane flight. A nearby passenger stated, “Hu’s the Communist,” she related.

And, Palin said, “I thought he was asking a question.”

Ah, the gift of laughing at one’s self. Wait. There’s more, including the ZINGER of the night:

Addressing the crowd of journalists, the former Alaska governor poked fun at the penchant of political reporters to leaf through campaign book indexes to find their names, noting that she decided to skip the index on her book.

So, at the dinner, she created one: “A: Alaska, media not understanding it, page 1-432.

“B: Biased, Page 1-432.”

But Palin also took the opportunity to take a few shots at her running mate from last year, and also her Democratic rival.

The ZINGER? Here you go:

The view is so much better inside the bus than under the bus,” she said, neatly putting together a reference to her book tour and a crack at the former ticket mate.

And if she ever need a bald campaign manager, “I’m left with James Carville,” a reference to President Clinton’s 1992 campaign manager and a dig at Steve Schmidt, McCain’s manager in 2008. …

I just hope there’s video soon. Maybe not. Whatever. Thanks to both news stories, we got a lot of the great humor in her speech. WTG, Sarah.

That is a major difference between Palin and Ozero: she can poke fun at herself; which is another thing that Ozero has no concept of. Her biggest problem is that alledged comedians attribute stupid comments to her and much of the general population (and all Obots) believe that she said these things.

    • Freedom Fighter

You know, I like Sarah Palin as a person, she seems like a nice small town lady, but her entire political persona is all about her personality rather than any substance. Politicians are supposed to be making policy, and as many journalists that have covered her can attest, she has no concept of policy. I mean she is a good enough mom, I guess (her daughter was an out of wedlock teen mom), but can anyone imagine her as a national, let alone a world leader?

      • DS

Obama’s entire political persona is all about his personality rather than any substance too, and he has little personality.

Didn’t stop him from becoming a national leader.

        • http://www.syd4.blogspot.com SYD

Yep. That seems to be the way of US politics at this time in history. If it were not… we’d have a qualified president now… like Hillary or Mac.

If we have to settle for “all personality and no substance” I think I’ll take the personality in a skirt. Thanks.

As far as I am concerned… raising a family while Governing Alaska is far more substance that we are EVER likely to get from Obie-won.

        • trixta

Except that Sarah worked her way to the governorship without the help of elite backing and monied interests. She’s a self-made woman who stands up for what she believes and is willing to fight for this country. Obama, in contrast, is an effete and slippery hack, a narcissist par excellence, and a wet dream for his corporatist puppet-masters. Oh yeah, and he needs a teleprompter for every speech.

      • Weezer

And Obama? Are you saying that he is something more than a personality? Are you trying to stretch him to a world leader and policy maker… LOL> Now THAT is the zinger.

Sarah Palin is FAR MORE capable of making decisions and bringing in a team that she would like to handle everything we need.

SHE is making it so far on her own.. Obama had a team of people.. and people to tell him what to say. Sarah.. it is all her. She has core beliefs and philosophy that guides her and that she has governed by. FAR MORE to bring to the table than Obama. Obama is led by so many.. he can not govern for the people.

Sarah is not owned by anyone!

Obama wants to socialize this country and distribution of wealth! Sarah wanted to bring our country back to its constitutional principals and entrepreneural spirit that this country was created upon!

      • Fredster

Ronald Reagan told great jokes. Doesn’t mean I wanted to vote for him or did vote for him. Same here. She may poke fun at herself, but her stands are totally the opposite of what I as a liberal or progressive believe. Her positions alone on womens’reproductive rights turn me off completely.

        • getfitnow

Yep, but as gov. she didn’t try to force her “positions” down anyone’s throat.

I am just glad to see someone on the scene brave enough to take a stand on their convictions.

I bought 2 copies of her book–in Berkeley–a black owned book store that was obviously for BO. There were images of him all over the store, even a life-size one.

I was glad to support a small minority business.

        • HoosierHawk

          Fredster,

You need to stop forming opinions based on lack of knowledge.

There is no way that you have any idea on what her positions on womens’reproductive rights are.

She is pro birth control – doesn’t think anyone should “go to jail” for abortion, knows people who have had abortions, and still likes them. There’s nothing radical in her views – you just think you know something you don’t

        • carol haka

What you mean is you think she is anti-abortion. So what? I’m anti-abortion now also.

In this day and age with all of the information and opportunity to prevent a pregnancy, “a woman should consider her reproductive rights” prior to having sex unless of course it is rape or the health of the mother or baby. This is the only line that is blurred about the right thing to do. My step grand-nephew was the product of the rape of a 12 year old girl, and she had the courage to keep the baby, and we love him dearly.

You know and a sonogram shows that a fetus is a baby. It might not be capable of self sustaining outside of the womb, but then my 83 year old father that just died hasn’t been self sustained for many years, but I never thought of shredding him while sucking him up into a vacumn cleaner bag.

Stop with the archaic excuses and put the emphasis on prevention and personal responsibility. A mother’s rights ends where a baby’s rights begin.

          CAROL HAKA

          • andrew

So, you generally believe that a woman who conceives should automatically lose legal control of her own body at that point and should have nothing further to say about whether she should become a mother, because a fertilized egg is a human being from the moment of conception?

            • carol haka

If she doesn’t want to become a mother, she should have thought about it before having sex. Otherwise, she doesn’t have to become something other than an incubator for the duration of the pregnancy and let someone else “mother” the child.

A fertilized egg is a human being – it has all of the necessary parts with the exception of being able to self sustain for a while which doesn’t make it any less human.

Enough with the pathetic excuses of “reproductive rights” to terminate a life. Exercise them in advance of creating a child. We are the advanced species – we don’t have to create a life unless we specifically choose to.

              CAROL HAKA

        • http://firefox AnnieCarmel

What? You don’t like condoms Fredster?

        • FranSC

As long as we allow controversial issues like “women’s reproductive rights” to trump human rights for all women, we will continue to make no further progress.

Besides, we already have reproductive rights signed into law. Why do liberal women keep insisting that more conservative women embrace something they don’t believe in? Why can’t we instead talk about those issues that effect us all – the sexism, misogyny, disrespect, why women only make 77 cents for every $1 a man makes, how few women there are in the board rooms of corporate America, the leading “reproductive rights” group NARAL’s endorsement of the less able man over our wonderful candidate, Hillary, who had supported NARAL from its inception.

Why must we continue on this destructive path instead of working together to defeat the issues that effect both liberal and conservative women. I am a liberal who is willing to do that.

          • FranSC

Another important point I should have made: “Reproductive Freedom” includes the right of a woman to not have an abortion if that is her choice. It also includes acceptance if a woman does not believe in abortion for whatever reason.

What self-respecting liberal feminist would not go to the wall for the right of a woman NOT to have an abortion if that was her choice?

Why are we still fighting about this?? We have it – it’s the law. It’s in the constitution! Enough already. It does not put a nickel in our pockets or get us an executive position. We must move on!

            • carol haka

It’s just a diversionary tactic that is stale and old.

I am personally sick of hearing about it. That is how they have kept women in line for years in the Democrat Party. Threaten them with the prospect of having to raise a child as our good ole Prez would say as a “punishment”.

If you want to terminate your child, you have the right to do so. Just start referring to it as what it is “a child”.

        FF said:

“her/his entire political persona is all about her/his personality rather than any substance.”

Hummmm. Who does that remind us of???? I’ve got the name, right on the tip of my tongue. I’m sure to come up with it soon. Seems to me this person does not wear a skirt. Tall, thin, uses his middle finger in curious ways.

Your posts are turning into a sad comedy routine, FF. Must be nice to be so blind and certain.

      • stodghie

ff, frankly your trite bull and lack of humility (geez) is getting on my last nerve so kindly shut your mouth.

      • HoosierHawk

All you are really saying is that you have no insight into her governing philosophy. If you bothered to find out what it is, you couldn’t have written your post, nor would you have shown that you really like to have opinions about things that you have no understanding of.

Policies are a result of the particulars of a given situation, guided by a governing philosophy. Policies flow from a defined philosophy.

Palin’s philosophy is what has attracted her base of support. Palin’s philosophy is limited government, restrained to it’s legitimate roles. For example, in Alaska, the legitimate roles of Government are public safety, education, responsible management of resources, and infrastructure to facilitate free commerce.

Every policitian is chock full of policies, most lack a philosophy.

      • Ferd Berfle

Do you work all night coming up with your truly s t u p i d comments or do they come naturally to you? I’m betting the latter as you’re probably too lazy to actually work at anything.

      • http://firefox AnnieCarmel

        Yes, I can!

        • http://firefox AnnieCarmel

Sorry, didn’t realize I was so far down thread. That means…Yes, I can imagine her on the international stage.

      • http://www.missmalevolent.com Miss Malevolent

Hilarious that an Obama supporter is saying this.

        Are you kidding me?

The grand narcissist in chief and you’re talking about Palin?

I’m no Palin supporter by far, but even I know you just served up a big bowl of hypocrisy here.

  • Freedom Fighter

They aren’t showing any videos, because we know she can hardly string a coherent sentence together. As Chris Matthews has said that Palin didn’t write her book, she probably had to read the jokes off some cheat sheet.

President Mombasa has this issue of trying to build street cred by flipping off people with a middle finger cheek scratch at the mention of the name of whoever he is flipping off. Palin has a lot of wiggle room here before she even gets close to being as non-presidential as President Mombasa.

    • felizarte

Obama is POTUS and he CAN’T MAKE POLICY. Sarah has all the time to demonstrate her talents, her principled stance and decisiveness. She’ll make an excellent commander in chief. If that gives FF nightmares, SO BE IT.

    • confusedinAmerica

At least when Palin’s telpromter malfuntions we don’t hear a whole slew of Uhhhhhs and ahhhhs…..

Palin at least can speak, which is more than one can say for Obama.

      You lose again, Freeloader.

  • Silence Dogood

OT: I guess no one noticed I am off to hopefully greener pastures for myself personally.

Keep fighting for what you believe in! That’s never lead my astray!

My apologies to anyone I vented on these past few days. Don’t take it personally. We are all Americans, its just we strongly disagree on the path the nation is taking.

    Thanks NQ friends and foes!

    Toodles. :)

    • Peggy Sue

Where are you off to, Silence? Greener pastures in the ether? Or greener pastures in life?

Either way, if you’re leaving the NQ neighborhood, good luck friend.

      Blessings, too.

      • Silence Dogood

You ever know you needed to do something, but you did not even know what it was so you kinda floundered around for a long while…

Then you maybe returned to a pastime (such as commenting on a favorite blog in my case) to finally find what you needed to find?

The election showed me one puzzle piece: we’ve all been seriously manipulated by both parities.

The trolls here showed me the other puzzle piece: lack of basic truth discernment skills is the reason most people do not make informed decisions.

Granted, its taken me double the life of a typical Cheeots huffer to garner truth discernment, but my point is we as a species have to teach our children critical thinking skills. Its the only hope I see for making better choices in leaders and everything else I can think of requiring a decision.

My greener pastures move me away from the combative to the educational, but I had to do combat to figure this out. I’m not sure my next move, but I am pointed in the right direction. This is progress.

I firmly believe your blogging experiences will lead you somewhere too, perhaps somewhere unexpected and wondrous!

Thanks trolls for helping me out, I was at a loss as what to do.

And hugs to you PS and all my pals here. I love ya’ll very much!

Thanks Portia, I value and enjoy your insights as well.

Trust me, I’m sad about this. Its not easy for me. :(

            • Donna Brazile

              That’s a good one!

  • Peggy Sue

Well, good for Palin. I still don’t think she’s qualified for the WH [not yet], but she has proven without a doubt she can take a punch and get up again. And even make fun of herself.

    That’s admirable!

I’d like to see her take a stab at the Senate or House, get her feet wet in DC. And then see what happens.

The woman can speak off the cuff; she proved that her first time out [when the teleprompter went berserko]. And that was a great introduction. Even her detractors had to backpedal. But she needs to be more articulate on domestic and international policy issues, get off the scripted messaging and dump the cliches and platitudes. That doesn’t serve her well.

Only a fool would dismiss Sarah Palin. She has a political career ahead of her if that’s what she truly wants.

    • Silence Dogood

Say it isn’t so Silence. I really look forward to your posts. I wish you the best, but I hope you aren’t leaving us at No Quarter.

    • Silence Dogood

Just following up before I exit, today. I’m going to ramble on here, writing from the spirit and intuition. Tinfoil hats, optional. :)

beachnan, you are very kind. This is not easy for me, its kinda like “I don’t want to leave but have to leave.” I have an all-or-nothing personality and put my heart and soul into everything I do. Its the kind of unbridled passion that creates symphonies yet also makes me incapable of just commenting here “on occasion.” :)

Trying not to be paranoid here, but I think my unbridled passion and ability to share it scares the living crap out of many people. They are unaccustomed to it. Perhaps if more people shared what they were really feeling (not the sugar coated version they outwardly show us) we could evolve as a species?

The troll ignorance is unbearable here. I had to fight it and then I get sucked in to blogging 24 hours straight forgetting to drink water kinda thing. As I stated in some previous comments, I actually thank the trolls. They helped me to see what has to be done to untroll society, as it were. No worries, this is nothing nefarious: its the teaching of truth discernment. The light of truth is darkness’ worst enemy!

I’m not comparing myself to a pastor, per se, but its kinda like I have a calling. Since being a child I thought it was to “save the world.” Reality set in and I realized this was impossible to do directly.

Misguided folks like Obama think they can force (their vision of) a better world on the rest of us. That ain’t no solution, that’s totalitarianism and always ends in the dismal failure of corpses strewn asunder. Caesar, Hitler and Bonaparte ultimately understood this and paid dearly. And so did we, those they ruled over. Oh boy did we pay dearly!

Human history rips my heart out. What rips it out even more is yet another evil wannabe dictator that a large chunk of the population fails to see for what he is — many of which are educated folks with advanced degrees! Makes me wonder what do they teach at the oxymoronic “institutions of higher learning?” Someone please give me a clue on this!

BTW I am not really leaving. I’ve been typing furiously spreading ideas over the past couple few weeks here. Good ideas are like seeds, they just need time to germinate and grow. A loved one or a favorite pet when they “die” never leaves our hearts and in essence they live forever; so do ideas! Ideas are eternal.

It is possible existence flowed out of an “idea” that created itself. This the “ultimate free lunch.” My point is, my ideas remain as do your ideas. Keep sharing your thoughts, it is not pointless. Never is!

My thoughts remain here, and new thoughts will be shared via something yet to be determined. One thing for certain, I am back on my path, albeit a long detour! :)

The final revolution on Earth to end all revolutions by violence will be fought entirely in the mind.

Many people place all their hopes in “leaders,” when the true leader is within…

        • Silence Dogood

Indeed. You should see my home, its a mess. My first project is to clean house, now that I’ve aired out my noggin of all the cobwebs n’ such.

Thanks creeper. I always leave doors open and try not to burn bridges in life. We’ll see what happens, but I really think my blogging combat days are over. I feel I’m getting too old for that and want to focus on something entirely different.

          • creeper

A couple of months ago I blogged myself right into a roaring case of depression. It was literally paralyzing…the house got filthy, we were eating out of cans, and checking out permanently crossed my mind more than once. I deleted every blog bookmark I had and started in on St. John’s Wort. I don’t know how that stuff works but it’s like magic. Takes a few days to kick in but when that happens it’s like crawling out of a very long, very dark tunnel.

And there you all were at the end of it to greet me.

Oh, Sarah was on that thing like white on rice. Snaps all over. WOW. I’ve now read 3 different articles and they all shared some new lines.

    Way to go Sarah.

  • Banned in Beantown

Sarah is capable, but she was not ready for Prime Time in the lower 48. She lost me with the winking. I was impressed with her grasp of the Constitution’s powers for VP, especially since they are not traditionally invoked. Biden and others were clueless as usual in that respect.

Sarah has a long way to go to overcome the missteps and image created by her campaign.

Her voice is needed, and I’d also like to see her in congress for a few terms.

Unless the conditions change, I hope she does not enter the 2012 presidential fray as a candidate or pundit. She is too much fodder that would be easy to use for distraction.

    • imustprotest

They said the same thing about Reagan.

    • Portia Elizabeth

I’ll take her wink over the finger any time.

    • Peggy Sue

I agree, Beantown. Sarah Palin has keen political instincts and personality to spare. But she’s just not there, not yet, not for the WH.

  • Sassy

Steve Schmidt was totally ineffective as McCain’s strategist and since.
The campaign was just loitering around the entire time the democratic primary process was winding down.
Sarah Palin is impressive, vibrant, young enough and courageous enough to chart her own course, and I’m anticipating a good time watching her!
She and McCain, like Hillary, were caught in the tidal wave of BO love.
Now the country is caught in the dismal, stagnant swamp of an inexperienced leader!
