Human Rights Day, December 10th

Today is Human Rights Day. What better time to listen to one of the Top 100 Speeches of the 20th Century, Hillary Clinton’s powerful, moving speech on Human Rights in China:

Yes, indeed this incredible speech definitely is in the Top 100. Amazing – Hillary Clinton is simply amazing. I still cannot believe the number of women who did not support her historic run for the president. Who would NOT want an advocate like Clinton in the White House?

While she did not make it (this time) for all the myriad reasons we know, a new online organization has been started comprised of those who support the work Hillary Clinton does on our behalf, all of us. Thr organization is No Limits. Ann Lewis, who authored numerous emails during the Primary Season for the Clinton Campaign, is affiliated with this organization as well. This is the most recent email from No Limits:

December 10 is Human Rights Day

When then First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton told the world in 1995 that “women’s rights are human rights, and human rights are women’s rights,” she sent a message of hope and aspiration that continues to resonate today, from kitchen tables in American cities to small villages in countries around the globe.

As Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton has continued her strong commitment to human rights and women’s rights. In the last year, she has appointed the first ever Ambassador for Global Women’s Issues, chaired the first UN Security Council session on violence against women, and offered significant medical help and protection for rape victims in the Congo.

Secretary Clinton has spoken out for religious freedom and diversity in Tazakh, LGBT rights in town halls from Washington, D.C. to Moldova, and increased access to technology for grassroots advocates fighting to be heard in Iran. She’s condemned the murder of journalists in Russia, and called on China to release those still imprisoned for their actions during the protests in Tiananmen Square two decades ago.

How refreshing to have an organization that celebrates the work of this remarkable woman, highlighting the work she is doing around the world. No doubt about it, Secretary Clinton is doing a tremendous amount of work. She is tireless in her efforts to secure human rights for ALL people.

Indeed, what a remarkable woman Hillary Clinton is – the speech she gave 14 years ago is just as meaningful today, the issues, unfortunately, still just as pressing. So today, on Human Rights Day, take action, whether it be at No Limits, or Amnesty International, or an organization of your choice.

I will close with these words of Hillary Clinton’s, which are still powerful, still moving, still a call to action:

“It is time to break the silence. It is time for us to say here in Beijing, and for the world to hear, that it is no longer acceptable to discuss women’s rights as separate from human rights. These abuses have continued because, for too long, the history of women has been a history of silence. Even today there are those who are trying to silence our words…”

      They only defend when they deem the women to be their kind of feminist. When asked if sexism was in play with Hillary Clinton during the primary, Nancy Pelosi said “I didn’t pay attention.” That’s right Nancy, you had your head in the sand the whole time.

        Pelosi is a faux progressive who allowed the Stupak Amendment into House HC bill. She has no leadership skills and has been politically untrustworthy.

        Any comparison to Hillary is absurd as Pelosi is a an inept Speaker and political hypocrite with liberal pretensions.

    Sadly, we are considering encouraging them to leave the U.S. after college.
    It is evident from observing the electoral process of other countries, that we have a long way to go here.

    Thanks for posting. I just listened to the speech again. The last time I listened to it was during the 2008 primary. In 2008 I was angry when I listened.

    Today I can not stop crying over the squandered opportunity to elect a President who would make a difference.

      Steve Clemons posted an article about Hillary being honored with the Global Leadership AWard — his article was on HuffPo and the comments were amazing — 95% of the ones I saw talking about the great loss of us not getting her as President. Amazing for that site to allow comments of that sort considering how they had treated her.

        And Eastan, yes – I think I did a piece on Seneca Falls. Years ago, I ran part of a leg carrying a torch from Seneca Falls to Houston. That was a powerful moment indeed.

        What can I say – I just love Hillary. Listening to this speech again affirmed the timelessness of the speech (unfortunately – in terms of women’s issues, that is). But listening to her, wow – how did ANYONE buy the meme that she was cold? What BS. Just another way to demean an incredible, powerful woman…

      funny, how when Hillary is recognized for her good works and it actually gets some mention ,there’s someone in the wings waiting to create a conspiracy theory, while they{facts about his {OB} betrayals to us and the rewards he has bestowed on wall street and continues} are surrounding OB and staff and or the positions not filled and disasters like the leaked airport rules ARE BEING ignored . Some just can’t take a good word being said about Hillary and actually deserved by someone other than the one.         Believe me, no one is more upset about Hillary selling out to the Obamessiah and we all know that a deal was struck to 1. keep her from reporting all the election fraud that took place in the primaries and 2. get her a high position within the Administration.

        It’s a sad fact and hard to accept, but Hillary continues to promote Obama bin Biden’s communist agenda and destruction of America.

        She gave up everything for this and it will never be forgotten by many.

    What a pathetic statement on feminism. To be unable to comprehend that a female may actually disagree with another female (even with well-written speech in tow) and see past her genitalia (that is the last remaining difference between the sexes you guys are comfortable discussing, right?).
