If what we’re reading about the feeling of his constituents is correct, he’s looking a losing his seat if he DOES vote for the bill.

I lived in Nebraska for several years and they are as close to a centrist state as I’ve ever lived in, voting for Republicans or Democrats depending on their commitment to their espoused principles. Stick a fork in Nelson because he is done.

Offdah! My condolences, elizabethrc. I wrote my representative and Senators and was assured they were going to perform due diligence before deciding how to vote, which means, in essence, they could be bought.

I think maybe it is time for the electorate to make every politician an offer he/she can’t refuse coupled with middle-class civil disobedience on a nationwide scale. Shut it down.

Perhaps if it were illegal for congresspeople to gain even a dime above their authorized paychecks, over and above any monies they brought into the process, if they were barred from receiving lobbyists/corporate/WH largesse in any way shape or form, they might begin to start acting responsibly. That would be working in the best interests of their constituents and not themselves. The way things work now is a clear disincentive to work on behalf of their constituents and by extension, their country.

The NYT this morning had an editorial about why Obama should institute the huge tax on bankers’ bonus compensation in this country, as England has done. It is unconscionable that the upper eschelon execs in this country be granted millions and millions in bonuses, (it is also true that those hardworking folks lower down on the totum will be the ones punished in reduced compensation. In the interest of full disclosure, a family member is in banking and bonuses were entirely scuttled for 2 years, inspite of any business brought in. Those bonuses were not close to the excessive ones we’ve read and heard about.) I suggest that until Obama is made unable to pork up congresspeople to get bills passed, until there’s not enough money in it for them to change their votes, until their entire individual finances are made public and where the money came from, he needs to be made to stop the threats and the backroom deals and he needs to clean up his own house.

You seem to forget that a republican/corporate cabal brought us to the very brink of economic disaster and continued to deny anything was fundamentally wrong until weeks before the elections. On their watch we saw the greatest upward transfer of wealth in the history of the nation, while America’s manufacturing base was sold overseas to the highest bidder. The super-rich got even richer and the poor got even poorer, while the middle classes have been left holding a bag stuffed with debts and empty promises.

I haven’t heard any new ideas out of them lately.

I personally think he knows he is a one term President because the people are going to demand he show his credentials to be put on the ballot again. Of coarse if his buddy get the governorship of Hawaii, he will manufacture a birth certificate. I think we all should be watching the governors race in Hawaii.

when a President’s approval ratings get on the low side, as Obama’s are now, conventional wisdom maintains that he would have less political clout. No leverage. If that is the case, then the threats made by Obammanuel could be easily swept aside if a person had a backbone. I don’t see that it would take much courage for Nelson to call their bluff. It wouldn’t really be all that dangerous a thing to do, to stand up to them and say “no deal, I’ll take my chances of losing my seat, but I’ll keep my soul.” I mean, if the political landscape continues to look the way it does now, then the DNC or the DNCC can threaten all they want to withhold funds. If Nelson would have stood up to Obammanuel, then his Republican opponent wouldn’t have been able to run against the vote as he/she will now. That’s my view at least. I like to think I would have called their bluff. They’re no better than thugs.
