Happy Winter Solstice

As we embrace this shortest day of the year, I found this very interesting piece about the Winter Solstice in Newgrange, Ireland. Our ancestors designed this incredible place there to honor this day, this countdown to the year to come:

As we celebrate the Solstice, we remember that growth takes place in the darkness, to be brought forth in the Spring. It is a time for reflection, for peace, for gathering with loved ones, and for magical moments, like those at Newgrange, as reflected in this piece by Clannad:

Ah, always a transformative moment, listening to (and watching) Clannad. By the way, if the members of Clannad look somewhat familiar to you, it is because they are Enya’s family. What an amazing family!

In any event, I hope this is a day of calm, a day of joy, of peace, and of one filled with love. I wish you all the same for the rest of the season, and for the New Year to come. And now, dear friends, I leave you with this lovely piece. Please sit back, relax, and be still:

Merry meet, merry part, merry meet again! Blessed be…

You are most welcome! Sometimes, we just need a break from the political B.S., and reconnect with the what remains constant – the rhythms of the earth…

These, to me, are the holy days–the icy shortest day of the year at the winter solstice, the birth of the new sun, henceforth each day getting a bit longer, all commingled with the Christian miraculous birth. I celebrate with lights in the dark cold days, as do most of us. I hang the ornaments on my Christmas tree with loving thoughts of the people and animals I have left behind. The tree itself is lit from deep within its branches, so the light flickers forth from the darkness. The things of heaven go to the top of the tree; the things of earth go towards the bottom.

The song by Clannad is beautiful and mysterious. Sisters Moya and Enya and the Brennan clan are indeed a gift to the world. Thanks for this lovely post, Rev. Amy.

And thank you, oowawa, for the beautiful comment. I can picture it all – you have a way with words! Thank you…

I am in awe of the music of Clannad. It really touches a place deep inside, so magical, so full of mystery (and not just because I don’t know what they are saying half the time)…What talented people that family is- I love Enya, too…
