Deep Thoughts for the Day

Obama handed out “change burgers” at a BBQ rally in Missouri yesterday.
         – “Road-Trip Reports: McCain In Colo., Obama In Mo.,” NPR Morning Edition

“But, while much has been made of John McCain’s struggles with his party’s conservative base, 33% of the uncommitted voters are Democrats while only 19% are Republicans.”
         – Rasmussen Reports

GET THIS MAN A TELEPROMPTER!
”Barack Obama is a lot like Sean Penn or George Clooney. If you give him a script, he can deliver it pretty well. But if he tries to talk without a script that has been written for him by others, he quickly reveals that he is poorly-informed if not downright ignorant. Today he delivered another classic, by claiming that if only we would all properly inflate our tires, we could save as much gasoline as “all the oil that they’re talking about getting off drilling.” Seriously: … ”
         – Read all.

Perhaps the deepest thought is below:

“GOP’s celeb-Obama message gains traction — Barack Obama’s critics laid down the foundations of the strategy months ago: The Republican National Committee started the ‘Audacity Watch’ back in April, and Karl Rove later fueled the attack by describing the first-term Illinois senator as ‘coolly arrogant’.”
         – Politico

:::::::

Whatever the thought, the conclusion is that it’s “amateur hour” these days on the Democratic side.

What a shame, given the rich field of candidates we began with, most of whom had far stronger resumes and real experience in international politics — not just photo ops.

  • CheatedFLVoter

I agree totally Susan. And the worse thing is that when he makes these stupid statements, he says them with such arrogance that people actually think he knows what he’s talking about.

    • http://noquarterusa.net/ SusanUnPC

      Yes.

Give me Joe Biden. Give me Chris Dodd. Give me Hillary Clinton. Even Dennis Kucinich has real beliefs and real experience. (I’ve had to cancel out Bill Richardson because his gaffes are just too embarrassing and I’ve decided he’s somewhat inflated the importance of the items he lists on his resume, but he does have real experience.)

Had I known how viciously the DNC would treat Hillary Clinton, I might have concurrently pressed for the nomination of Biden or Dodd. At least, then, if the DNC had still gamed the primaries to screw Hillary, we’d have ended up with a qualified candidate.

      • workingclass artist

Good Post Susan….Obama proves once again how IMPORTANT IT IS TO STUDY UP ON HISTORY….chuckle…Aaaaand current events….LOL

**** Obama and his crowd probably think Reagan Democrats is the title of a sitcom…..sheeesh ! Will Noone Rid Us Of This Popinjay ? ****

      • MEchelle Hates America!

Dodd’s a jerk. He screwed HRC over.

What about Dodd’s once strong stand on FISA?

Now he’s backing back stabber Barack and taking loans Country wide!

        • Tuppence 411

Dodd sucks. I live in a state bordering CT. He sucks. That’s why Lieberman got back in so easily-running as an Independent after telling the DNC to kiss his a$$ for trying to steal his seat. CT would have been screwed with only Dodd. They knew it and Dodd knows it.

      • Andy

Don’t like Dodd or Biden much…although they are good comapred to Obama; at leats they would make responsible presidents.

BTW, Jeralyn@TL feels so strongly against Biden that she wrote recently that should Biden be the VP she would not support the ticket…
I think having BO at the top of it is disqualifying just by itself !!

      • mahaska

        I don’t trust Joe Biden.

        • Tuppence 411

Biden’s a loser. How many times has Joe tried to be the Dem Nominee for President? He’s a loser and Dems hate losers. That’s why Hillary must maintain her “winner” status. She got 18 million votes. She has a winning coalition. She has the states needed to get to 270 electoral votes. She’s the winner in 2008 and she WILL be the winner in 2012. The winner doesn’t accept being the VP of a loser and no way will a winner allow a convention ballot intentionally rigged for her to lose. Hillary is the winner and don’t anyone forget it!

    • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jHjFxJVeCQs dgr

Yes, and he has no compunction about stealing boldly in the light of day, from Hillary Clinton’s speech on The Stop Excessive Energy Speculation Act.

“by claiming that if only we would all properly inflate our tires, we could save as much gasoline as “all the oil that they’re talking about getting off drilling.”

      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I73prA_eplc

of course, he could have gotten that information from one of his advisors… but from his history of lifting freely from Hillary Clinton’s policies, I’d say he is FOS and stealing freely this line from Hillary.

      • lizpolaris

If you listen to the speech, that’s not what Hillary Clinton says.

I believe what you are referring to is said after minute 6 in the video. She quotes Sen Cantrell, who says that the equivalent amount of oil per day could be saved by increasing the pressure in the tires of the vehicles that we drive.

What exactly was Sen Cantrell referring to? I’m not sure but he didn’t say (and she didn’t say) that the equivalent amount of oil could be saved by keeping our tires properly inflated. It could be that the Senator was referring to some type of tire which functions more efficiently under greater pressure. Or it could be that its been found we could follow guidelines for inflating our existing tires to greater pressure than is currently the standard which would help. Or something else…

  • JohninCA

The Ludacris flap doesn’t exactly help him either.

    • http://noquarterusa.net/ SusanUnPC

One of us who can stomach it is going to write this up.

      • stateofdisbelief

        Susan,

Oblahma threw Ludacris under the bus so quick they never even slowed down. It must’ve been a bloody site. Wonder what the hip-hop crowd thinks of this diss???

        • wry

To me Barky didn’t throw Ludacris under the bus forcefully enough. He had his un hip white campaign manager do it, so he can privately tell ludacris “you know I’m just playing with you”. I want sh*#head to come out and tell ludacris to take it off the radio. Otherwise Barky is being too cute. He gets the benefit of using the song as an anthem to rally a group that traditionally never votes, yet he can tell the white public he denounced the lyrics.
The “paint the white house black” crowd will understand that Barky is doing exactly what Wright predicted he would do…”he’s a politician…he’ll do what politicians do” with a wink.

        • tzada

He probably told them in private…”just messin wit ya” Like he told his Palestine Chicago pals. “I can acknowledge you, after I win the election”…or words to that effect. Like noone knows all the parties and meetings and connections, including donations from the Woods Fund by him and Ayers that involved him and them….Guess Snow White and his 12 trolls think we are stupid.

          • workingclass artist

            wink*wink*….nudge~ nudge~

      • JohninCA

        Ludacris isn’t helping his candidate,
Lyrics like that aren’t apt to win any state,
        Profanity, hatred and histrionics
Linked with his particular kind of ebonics
May snatch defeat from impending victory’s jaws
        And threaten electoral disaster because
Voters will remember as November draws near
And tell the White House, make ready: McCain will be here.

        • jwrjr

Until Obama publicly, forcefully tells ludicrous Ludacris to stop with the hateful manure, Obama owns it.

          • ginaswo still says no Uhhbama

yes he does jwrjr and as I have said before the idiot women, sorry but IDIOT women like Joy Behar on the View LAUGHING and reading the lyrics like they are acceptable hurt ALL of us, whoopi says N word is fine, Joy thinks B is fine, fine frak them the n and the b, the rest of us DONT find it acceptable ever.

  • Joeconservative

Wow, just when I thought I had seen everything… A former contributor to liberal blogs is using quotes from Powerline, an arch conservative blog, to denigrate Obama. I love it!!! I was having a field day just seeing you quote Fox news over and over again, but this is just fantastic! The only thing left is to link to sound bytes from Rush!

I only wish you people would do more to talk up John McCain than just trash Obama every chance you get.

    • stateofdisbelief

McCain will have to wait. We still have not given up on getting the best qualified candidate – Hillary – nominated.

      • Diana

Why is Hillary not going to be at the convention until the second night, and then only to deliver a speech?

WASHINGTON – Barack Obama is offering Hillary Clinton a prime-time speaking slot the second night of the Democratic National Convention, her ex-campaign boss said Monday.

Clinton will address the convention – and the nation – “probably Tuesday night,” Clinton moneyman and confidant Terry McAuliffe told MSNBC.
        http://tinyurl.com/699nte

McAuliffe was not supposed to reveal Clinton is getting a choice gig. The Obama campaign refused to discuss McAuliffe’s slip of the tongue.

Team Obama also declined to say whether Bill Clinton will be given a speaking spot of his own.

        • Kevin

I will not watch it Sam I am

          • Diana

Sorry about that I put the link in the middle. Early here and I need coffee. I guess I’m just wondering if we haven’t been fed even more lies…why would Hillary only be there one night if her name is to be on the ballot? Or if there is going to be a roll call?

I agree State, we work for Hillary first.

    • RepublicanChick

Joe: It isn’t our site and therefore, we don’t set the agenda or opinion.

Obama is the ordained candidate of the Democratic Party. It would seem pretty obvious that NQ isn’t particularly “fond” of Obama. Therefore, they can say what they like.

Also, I have seen links to Rush’s site and heard a few soundbytes from his show posted from time to time.

If Obama wasn’t so darn dangerous, I would probably vote for someone other than McCain. Here’s hoping McCain doesn’t alienate more conservatives with a lousy VP choice.

If McCain was not the GOP choice….I wouldn’t even consider voting for the usual REGULAR GOP GOOSESTEPPERS YOU USUALLY OFFER….

I don’t have a link to Rush, but I did hear a funny bit last week. Rush had audio clips of Obama and Bono doing the line “this is our moment, this is our time”, it was funny as hell, he kept flipping from Bono to Obama saying the same thing. I guess when your speechwriter is 25 you might get some Bono lines in your speech.

    • mahaska

I wish you people would stop saying you people.

      • workingclass artist

Mahaska….If on occasion you catch me sayin you people…it is usually in jest or…..a hazard of environment ( Texas ) where this colloquialism is used by anybody to anybody….things down here tend to get a different translation up north or out west…..So Call me on it if I offend but I will cling to…..chuckle…..the use of Cracker when describing myself and that special bond I share with Barry.

        • Fred C. Dobbs

“You people,” is a way Texans try not to use, “y’all,” to non-Southerners. When one says, “Y’all,” one must endure scorn from the North and Midwest, or one must explain it.

          “You people,” is the Work-Around.

Speaking Southern, especially the Texan variants (there are 8 different idioms/accents in Texas), is a daunting task and best not attempted by non-Southerners.

Floridians, like me, say, “Hey! How y’all?”
East Texans say, “Hi! Hire yew?”

Trust me…Japanese is a LOT easier.

          • Fred C. Dobbs

            ADDENDUM:

I would MUCH rather converse in Hill Country Texan than any of the Alabama or Georgia dialects.

You need to read more. There are Democrats here who both criticize Ibama and praise McCain.

I have praised McCain on Iraq, and on hs Energy Policy. Energy directly ties to the short term and long term fate of the economy.

The price at the pump is the economy stupid!!

Exploring every energy option, including opening up new drilling leases, will lessen dependence on mid east oil, and put a damper on speculation.

Speculation is driven by SWAG. It is not based on current supply and demand. Opening up every eergy option will effect speculation psycology.

This post has a link to Ibama telling a Missouri audience that by inflating car tires, we can save the same amount of oil that all the new drilling would create. Ibama should take a math refresher.

Ibama said “we can’t drill our way out of our energy problem.” But we can inflate our way out?

Why not, Ibama is inflating his way to the White House.

Obama is just like one of today’s star-maker created pop idols. All superficial image creation and zero substance. It’s so easy once the surface is scratched to realize there is absolutely nothing under the suit.

Hillary on the other hand (while certainly an impressive presence to behold) is pure and full substance in the areas necessary to lead our country back in the right direction.

Why are we even having this discussion when Oblahma let us know his campaign was about “words” and Hillary told us hers was about “solutions.” Doesn’t seem like rocket science to me. Why is it so hard to pick the right one when we’re choosing between Milli Vanilli and Barbara Striesand???

Any thoughts as to why the MSM hasn’t picked up on the reparations comments made by BHO?
I know I’ve harped on this theme off and on, but I really believe that his affiliation with crazy uncle #1 (Wright) and ties to TUUC, NOI, Etc. are behind this.

a bunch of bad polls for bambi…

    http://www.quinnipiac.edu/x2882.xml?ReleaseID=1196

Florida and Ohio are now too close to call. No one has been elected President since 1960 without taking two of these three largest swing states in the Electoral College. Results from the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University polls show:
    Florida: Obama has 46 percent to McCain’s 44 percent, compared to a 47 – 43 percent Obama lead June 18;
    Ohio: Obama has 46 percent to McCain’s 44 percent, compared to a 48 – 42 percent Obama lead least time;
    Pennsylvania: Obama leads McCain 49 – 42 percent, compared to 52 – 40 percent.

Bambi spent $5 million in FL, McCain spent ZERO. There’s no chance bambi will be able to carry FL, I guess he just has too much money to burn.

He’d better pray for VA & CO, otherwise, he’s toast.

This slow drip drip drip of defeat for Oblahma will pick up speed and turn into a gush after Denver if the SDs refuse to do what they were appointed to do.

Virginia has a huge military population (both active and retired). I doubt Obama will win Virginia. He may very well win Colorado as it seemed to be leaning more and more to the left.

He should be well ahead at this point, but these numbers should be worrisome. Although, I don’t put much stock into any polls until after Labor Day.

      • Indy

Latest Colorado poll shows BO leading by 1.7. He has slipped here too (poll number from Real Clear Politics). Four years ago there were Kerry signs & bumper stickers everywhere (I’m in Denver). This year there are quite a few local campaign signs but not much else. There’s a BO sign here and there, but nothing like the last election. I did see a Hillary sign in one yard (go puma). We are a one car family so I don’t do a lot of driving around, but my husband hasn’t seen much either on the various routes he takes to work.

What it says to me is there is not the kind of support for BO I’d expect to see in this Dem stronghold (and home to this years convention).

I live in a suburb of Pittsburgh and last weekend, had a wake-up call when talking to a former 76 year old neighbor. I hadn’t discussed politics with him since March, when we were both changing our registrations to Democrat (him from R; me from I) to be able to vote for HRC in the PA primary. He’s now saying that he’s going to vote for BO in the GE, because he doesn’t want to have GWB’s 3rd term. His concern is that with the economy tanking, his retirement fund has diminished significantly.

I understand his concern about his nest egg, but was shocked at his mis-information in thinking that McCain would be GWB’s 3rd term, when clearly, BHO = GWB’s 3rd term.

Evidently, the message that’s still getting out to the general population is that BO is The One to solve all problems and that McCain would be more of the same of what we’ve had for the past 8 years.

We still have a lot of work to do, to ensure that obama is defeated.

          • mahaska

His mob calls black people that won’t back him race traitors. That’s really stupid because it shows the truth. They want them to vote for him just because he’s part black.

        • pasmalltowngirl

Yes, that is the main concern of this election.

Most of the elderly base their decisions on what the MSM is telling them. And we all know what that is, Obama is the all mighty wonderful candidate who will bring about the change that we have all been waiting for.

When you try to get thru to them, explain that the media is corrupt, that they are giving you their biased opinions instead of the true facts, that they are pushing for this man for their own agenda, money. And you try to explain that you have done tons of research on Obama on the Internet, and their reply to that is, you can’t believe every thing you read on the net. But if CNN says it, it must be gospel.

The young voter lives in their own little world. With all of the privileges they have had, they don’t realize that their life can change in a heart beat, and not for the better. They look at you like you are a pathetic paranoid old person who doesn’t know anything, to them anyone over the age of 30 is old and dumb.

It is so frustrating that the majority of voters take for granted our freedoms, and do not take the time to do their own research as to who is the most qualified person to lead our country and will vote for a man because the MSM has glorified him.

They don’t realize that their vote may very well be one of the most important decisions that they will ever have to make in their life time.

But I have to believe and pray that little by little, day by day, we are getting the message out, that Obama will destroy our country.

          • Hope Floats

PA went to Gore and Kerry in 2000 and 2004. The rest of the OH river valley will vote red. That is OH, then the other Rust belt states MI, and IN then the Appalachian states WV, KY, TN, AK and NC. PA always breaks away from that trend and usually because of Philadelphia.

            • Boxer Mum 06

I live in the Philly suburbs and keep counting the many McCain signs that are popping up – lawn signs, bumper stickers.

              It’s a good thing!

Don’t count Philly out yet – there are many bitter white people clinging to their guns and religion here too!

              • Boxer Mum 06

Oh and one more thing to point out.

Barry is not carrying as many of the AA community in Philly as he thinks. I was at a Hillary fundraiser and there were many folks from the AA community there. They know a fraud when they see one.

Philly is the home of Rocky and the reference Hillary made to Rocky really hit home here (no pun intended)

We are loyal and would rather see McCain win than give it to Barry.

Plus, Barry made a nasty comment about Eagles fans too – something about bringing a knife to a gun fight.

  • georgiapeach

I thought that a gradual gravitation to Obama would be the natural progression for me once Edwards dropped out. What stopped me dead in my tracks was the spectacle of Oprah on stage at a campaign event informing us that Obama “is The One”. When I started paying closer attention, I noticed that Hillary had a lot better grasp of all of the issues, and concrete plans that she could discuss in detail at the drop of a hat. Obama’s answer was “What she said” or some variation of that more often than not. It caused me to have serious misgivings about being able to vote for him if he was the nominee. What sealed the deal for me, ironically, came out of Obama’s own mouth. When he was challenged about holding no oversight hearings on Afghanistan, that smug look when he said it was true because he was too busy running for President, I knew that I would never be able to bring myself to vote for him. I would feel the same way if it had been HRC or John McCain who said it. It is beyond arrogant to assume that you are so wonderful and important that your Presidential bid is more important than actually doing your job and looking out for troops in a war zone.

Does he really think that the American people are that fr’n stupid.

I have a nephew who is a junkie, and he is quite good at playing the system and people. He truly believes every stupid ass con game he creates in his mind. At first he comes of as a intelligent human being to those who have just encountered the likes of him for the 1st time.

You know when someone has a child who is in to drugs or something else that is immoral or illegal, they want to give that child every benefit of the doubt, they truly want to believe them, they let them con you for many many years, just hoping and praying that your heart was right and not what you actually knew deep down inside all along. His supporters will soon realize, like most parents eventually do, that he is one big CON.

Just like many people believed that Obama was or is going to be the answer for all human kind.

Every time they listen to him, watch his actions, they will slowly realize that he lives in a fantasy. That they are being bamboozled.

The drugs make them feel grandeur, they think that they are actually smarter than anyone else on the planet, that they have the answer to solve every problem and to BLAME others if things just don’t go as they had planned in their drug induced mind.

So sad that the media and the DNC has chosen a drug user to be our POTUS, I surely will feel safe knowing that he is looking out for my children.

What is truly amusing is that there is no one of BHOs supporters who can/will answer my question. Other than some blather about improving schools (like he and Ayers did in Chicago, not). How would it work? How would you figure it out, does a recipient of a good/great education get some? Does the beneficiary of affirmative action get less? How about the chinese laborers who built the railroads? They weren’t exactly paid or treated well, but were not “owned”. How about the mine workers in the 1800s? They were owned in all but name by the coal companies, but fought for their worker’s rights, and slowly gained the right to organize. How about the decendents of the civil war troops?

I see Hussein Obama couldn’t resist playing the race card again this morning…

Barack Obama, the first black candidate with a shot at winning the White House, says John McCain and his Republican allies will try to scare them by saying Obama “doesn’t look like all those other presidents on the dollar bills.”

Obama did not make clear what distinctions McCain was likely to raise regarding the presidents on U.S. currency, men who are white and, for the most part, much older than Obama when they were elected. McCain has not raised Obama’s race outright as an issue in the campaign, though he has said that Obama lacks experience

Oh pleeaaseeeee, That line is so worn out already. Geesh, his young speech writer needs to come up with a new excuse for him to cover the fact that he is a joke. But he is correct, that he does look different, and not because he’s black, he looks different because he is wearing a mask to disguise the real Barack Obama.

  • katmandu

Other polls have now confirmed what Rasmussen Reports was the first to report on Monday–that Obama’s Berlin bounce faded as quickly as it came and the Democrat enjoyed no gain from his world tour.

New data released today shows that 30% of conservative Democrats plan to vote for John McCain. Nineteen percent (19%) of White Democrats say the same. Full crosstabs are available for Premium Members. There are nearly twice as many uncommitted voters today as there were four years ago in late July . . .

    http://www.rasmussenreports.com/public_content/politics/election_20082/2008_presidential_election/daily_presidential_tracking_poll

Apparently the Obama advocates on this site think only a few people distrust Obama and will or may vote for McCain. Yet the numbers above suggest millions feel the same way.

    • getfitnow

And as one of those uncommitted voters, I am committed to voting for McCain.

I know young people are convinced of their belief in Obama and what they think he stands for. People like Obama are very conniving and charming. I’ve known people like him. It is easy to get caught up in it. Obama’s supporters are mainly very young and at that age people are very immature and some very naive.

    • katmandu

I agree with you. Hey, I was young and irrational once. Really. Three kids changes one a lot.

Here’s a nifty article from the LA Times Blog, asking

Where did Barack Obama’s mojo go?

Something’s going on. Or some things.

A new CNN/Opinion Research poll out Wednesday shows that despite nine solid days of blanket media coverage from overseas with Barack Obama cheered by adoring throngs of Germans and parlez-vousing with the French, making a three-point shot in the Middle East and standing outside No. 10 Downing Street, the freshman Illinois Democratic presidential nominee to be Senator Barack Obama of Illinois stayed static in the polls despite his well-covered long foreign tripsenator is stuck right where he was in the polls before he left.

No bounce. Not even a roll.

      http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/washington/2008/07/obama-mccain-po.html

Anyone remember that old Buffalo Springfield protest song, “Something’s happening here, what it is ain’t exactly clear.”?

The writer, Andrew Malcolm, has some ideas –

Several strategists of both parties sense Americans want to vote for Obama, but something is holding them back. Or several somethings, as we suggested up top.

Maybe Obama’s flips — his outspoken opposition to denouncing the Rev. Jeremiah Wright until he did, his promise to take public campaign financing, since broken, his eagerness to debate McCain in townhalls, now abandoned, his apparent unwillingness to see progress in the Iraq troop surge, which he opposed and predicted would worsen sectarian violence?

Is there a simmering concern over arrogance by the Ivy League lawyer and mere candidate who so blithely patted the French president on the back for a well-done news conference? Asked the other day if he ever doubted himself, Obama replied smartly, “Never!” And grinned broadly. Sounded more like a 20-year-old than someone about to turn 47 next week.

      Gee, ya think?

Obama’s talking change too. But he’s a legislator who’s been in Washington three years now, two of them as a member of a Democratic-controlled Congress that was elected in 2006 with great promise but currently holds historically low favorability ratings.

What’s Obama done for D.C. change since arriving? What’s Obama done for reform back home within the historically monolithic and corrupt Chicago Democratic machine, where some up-and-comers are sent off to Congress for seasoning before advancing to the big-time of City Council?

The longer the Obama campaign goes without pulling comfortably ahead of the former fighter pilot who was trained to stay on his opponent’s tail, the more worrisome it’ll become for chief strategist David Axelrod (see photo) and others behind the closed doors in their Windy City headquarters.

Now the staffers scanning the site for BHO go back and tell the campaign that independent writers are asking the same disturbing questions the PUMAs are asking.

      • WildChild

At the end of their career, the bee gees had been so successful and so much in the public eye that radio stations were starting to offer no bee gees weekends because people were burning out on them. I’ve been hoping the same thing would happen to BOBO. He’s certainly been helping it along by always going for flash over substance. This is good because BOBO seems to forget the job he is running for is all about substance. The flash we can do without.

But he only had to see a couple of examples of this charlatan — we never fell for his speechmaking skills and anything related to his eloquence went out the door when we first saw him do all stuttering without a teleprompter and a script. Apparently in France with Sarkozy in that press conference he was looking at his little note cards — can you believe that? His first reason for not going to visit wounded troops, he could not take some General with him — why didn’t he go alone? Why did he need this General as chaperon?

Actually, it’s true. Under-inflated tires decrease an automobile’s fuel efficiency by about 0.4% for every 1 PSI they are below their recommended PSI. For the average automobile, with gas at $4.08 per gallon, being 1 pound below recommended PSI adds the equivalent of $0.12 per gallon to your fuel costs.

    http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/maintain.shtml

There are over 30 million cars on the road in the United States. Most owners don’t keep their tires properly inflated.

“More than a quarter of all cars and nearly one-third of all SUVs, vans and pickups are driven with tires at least 8 pounds below their proper levels, according to a new survey by the Department of Transportation.

“If all Americans kept their tires properly inflated, NRDC estimates the nation would cut its gasoline use by 2 percent.”

    http://www.nrdc.org/air/energy/fensec.asp

A 2% reduction in gasoline useage would have the effect Obama alluded to.

If the government required fuel efficient replacement tires, this would save 5.4 billion barrels of oil over the next 50 years–70 percent more than the total amount of economically recoverable oil that is likely available from the Arctic Refuge over the same time period.

Fuel-efficient replacement tires add only $2.50 to $5.00 to the cost of a new tire.

    • Kevin

And how do we mandate to Americans to keep their tires inflated?
I’m all for conservation. I am not referring to drilling ANWR, and neither is Senator McCain. We need more domestic oil production, and we cannot transfer to a oil free economy in 10 years like Gore suggests. I am not referring to economics, but security and freedom from mid-east oil.

  • james

I figure Americans are smarter than they’re sometimes given credit for. Fuel efficient replacement tires should and could be mandated. With proper tire inflation, Americans only need a clear explanation and the encouragement of regular reminders. Public service announcments. Maybe a mandated sticker they’d see on gasoline pumps every time they gas up. Something to remind them it’s good for their individual wallets and for family safety. And proper tire pressure is patriotic. A responsible government would be reminding us.

We’ve fallen into some sort of dysfunctional psychology. We have a common problem, but we’v been led to believe we have no personal responsibility when it comes to fixing it. The government wants us to believe our own responsibility is limited to simply voting for someone who will fix things for us.

This, I think, is symptomatic. It’s like Bush’s war in Iraq. We were never called on to make personal sacrifices as citizens toward a cause we were told was so important. Instead, Bush lowered our taxes and borrowed billions, hiding the costs and leaving the sacrifices to the future. We were encouraged to pull out our credit cards and consume to stimulate the economy. Same thing now, it seems. The government borrowed billions, handed out the money in stimulus checks, and told us to go spend it. As if increasing debt would somehow fix things. Common sense and actual conservative values seem to have flown out the window. John McCain certainly isn’t looking for them.

I’m not against increased domestic oil and gas production. That’s obviously necessary as we transition to alternative energy, which we really have no choice about if we want to have a future. Unrestrained offshore drilling, though, I see as an industry scam. It won’t have a significant effect “sometimes in months” as McCain carelessly stated a few days ago. The significant increase in supplies would be 10 years away–when alternative energies could be coming online in a very big way, if we begin the big push now.

The industry wants the offshore oil in 10 years to sell to the Chinese and Indian markets. That’s what the offshore development is all about: Enormous profits from foreign markets.

In my humble opinion, of course…

    • workingclass artist

        Too perfect in this context.

    • Kevin

James, I agree that unrestrained offshore drilling is dangerous, but what I believe is that a reasonable increase in exploration and production, combined with increased conservation and alternative energy development will have a combined effect. What that effect will be is an increase in our security, by a decrease in our reliance on Mid-East oil, and an increase in domestic production will have an impact on the futures market, not today, but eventually.
The most important aspect to me is reducing and eliminating our dependance on the Saudis, because we are their servant. And look what that gets us.

      • Fred C. Dobbs

We can find all the oil under North America tomorrow, but we are WAY short of refining capacity.

        Crude gotta be cracked!

BP os shutting down the refinery at Bakersfield soon, probably adding 8 cents/gallon to CAL fuel.

Takes almost as long to build a refinery as a nuke plant…

There’s lots of refining capacity in the Western Hemisphere (north half): Aruba, Punta Cardon, VZ, Hess VI, Peerless in Puerto Rico, etc.

But we’d have to kiss some serious ass to get our crude cracked. AND, it takes two tanker trips: crude terminal to refinery; then refinery to Distribution terminal.

Birth certificate of child linked to Edwards lists no father

The birth certificate of a child who a tabloid newspaper claims is linked to former Sen. John Edwards doesn’t identify a father.

The certificate, obtained by The Charlotte Observer today, shows Frances Quinn Hunter was born Feb. 27, more than two months after an Edwards aide claimed to be the father. Andrew Young, a former Edwards campaign finance director, claimed paternity in a statement from his lawyer posted at the political blog mydd.com.

The girl was born at Cottage Hospital in Santa Barbara, Calif., to Rielle Jaya James Druck, also known as Rielle Hunter. Hunter, 44, was a videographer on Edwards’ presidential campaign last year.

Asked Thursday why no father was listed on the birth certificate, Hunter’s attorney, Robert Gordon of New York, said, “A lot of women do that.”

Reminded that he and Hunter had publicly revealed the father’s identity two months earlier to the National Enquirer, Gordon said, “That’s a personal matter between them.”

    Gordon declined to comment further.

I think obama has been smoking some of that wacky weed he wrote about, or sniffing some of that white powder he praised in his book. I think whatever it is has fried his brain. His comments claiming “if only we inflate our tires and get a tune-up, we can save as much oil as we would get by drilling” just shows his total ignorance! Anyone who acccepting that comment as a viable energy policy in lieu of drilling is just as stupid(perhaps more so) as he is! Did obama get a Law degree from Harvard, or a simple certificate of completion from kindergarten in Chicago? Now that is the 64,000 dollar question isn’t it? God hurry November so we can get this insulting madness over!

    RaginG tiger says:
“I have been to FEMINIST websites and blogs, where the author of the website says things to people like “Fuck off”, “Get lost”. “Go to Hell” “slam your little dick in a door” Haha Uppity, etc. If they can insult their political opposition that way by using those words, then why can’t I?”

Good point. The “progressives” for “equality” can insult people to promote their own candidate or ideas, but if you do it back to them, they cry foul, or object. Checkmate.
