A Very Merry Christmas And Happy New Year

* Bumped up *

To the Health Care Industry, Big Pharma, and a few select states. Yes, in the wee hours of the morning (okay, 7:00 a.m.), the Senate voted to pass the Health-Care-less-what-the-people-and-physicians-say Bill. Oh, yes – what a banner day. The Senate rammed through a bill so fraught with problems it would be laughable if it didn’t have the potential to affect so many in this country.

But, one person who is very happy about this early morning vote was Barack Obama. Now he can do what he does best – vacation. Yep, he was waiting to make sure this backroom, strong-arm, possibly unConstitutional bill to pass the Senate before going to Hawaii for the holidays. I am sure he is all plumb tuckered from his trip to Norway and Copenhagen in such a short amount of time, and his constant tv appearances. Poor baby, I am sure he is EXHAUSTED.

Obama got what he wanted thus far – oh, no – not any of the things on which he campaigned, mind you. No, he got a Health Care Bill with his name on it to pad his record, assuming that we aren’t smart enough to actually care what the hell is IN it. All he cares about is being able to brag that it happened, not what it will do to the country. Next step, the House of Representatives to jive the two bills together just in time for the State of the Union?

Not if this Representative has anything to say about it, though. And this one is actually a Democrat. I am not referring to Stupak, but to Louise Slaughter (D/NY). I know, I was surprised, too, when I saw this article from CNN, A Democrat’s View From he House: Senate Bill Isn’t Health Reform. Dang, she better be careful of any presents left at her door by Rahm and Harry. Ahem. I have to say, it is mighty courageous of her to speak out like this, and isn’t that a sad commentary, that it would require courage? We’ve seen what happens if a Democrat doesn’t toe the line (“We’re keeping score, brother,” – Obama). No doubt. That’s the Chicago-way.

But Slaughter isn’t from Chicago. She’s from New York:

CNN Editor’s note: Rep. Louise M. Slaughter, a Democrat, represents the 28th Congressional District of New York. Slaughter is the first woman to chair the House Rules Committee and the only microbiologist in Congress.

The Senate health care bill is not worthy of the historic vote that the House took a month ago.

Even though the House version is far from perfect, it at least represents a step toward our goal of giving 36 million Americans decent health coverage.

But under the Senate plan, millions of Americans will be forced into private insurance company plans, which will be subsidized by taxpayers. That alternative will do almost nothing to reform health care but will be a windfall for insurance companies. Is it any surprise that stock prices for some of those insurers are up recently?

I do not want to subsidize the private insurance market; the whole point of creating a government option is to bring prices down. Insisting on a government mandate to have insurance without a better alternative to the status quo is not true reform.

Amen, sister. Right there with ya. Oh, and that whole taxation thing? That will happen immediately even though this program isn’t set to start until 2014. I gotta tell you, considering how much we already pay (including how much MORE we have to pay since we can’t be married, about $2,500 a year), I don’t really care to be shelling out more money to pay for OTHER people’s private health insurance. BUt that’s just me. Oh, and maybe Slaughter:

By eliminating the public option, the government program that could spark competition within the health insurance industry, the Senate has ended up with a bill that isn’t worthy of its support.

The public option is the part of our reform effort that will lower costs, improve the delivery of health care services and force insurance companies to offer rates and services that are reasonable.

Although the art of legislating involves compromise, I believe the Senate went off the rails when it agreed with the Obama Administration to water down the reform bill and no longer include the public option.

But that’s not the only thing wrong with the Senate’s version of the health care bill.

Under that plan, insurance companies can punish older people, charging them much higher rates than the House bill would allow.

In the House, we fought hard to repeal McCarran-Ferguson, the antitrust exemption that insurance companies have enjoyed for years. We did that because we believed firmly that those Fortune 500 corporations should not enjoy special treatment.

Yet the Senate bill does not include that provision — despite assurances from some members that they will seek to add it. By ending that protection, we will be able to go after insurance companies with federal penalties for misleading advertising or dishonest business practices.

The House bill would cover 96 percent of legal residents, while the Senate covers 94 percent. Compared with the House bill, the Senate’s bill makes it much easier for employers to avoid the responsibility of providing insurance for their workers.

And of course, the Senate bill did not remove the onerous choice language intended to appeal to anti-abortion forces.

Now don’t get me wrong; the current House and Senate bills are a significant improvement over the status quo. Given the hard path to reform and the political realities of next year, there is a sizable group within Congress that wants to simply cut any deal that works and call it a success. Many previous efforts have failed, and the path to reform is littered with unsuccessful efforts championed by Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Harry Truman and Bill Clinton.

Supporters of the weak Senate bill say “just pass it — any bill is better than no bill.”

I strongly disagree — a conference report is unlikely to sufficiently bridge the gap between these two very different bills.

It’s time that we draw the line on this weak bill and ask the Senate to go back to the drawing board. The American people deserve at least that.

The opinions expressed in this commentary are solely those of Louise Slaughter.

I disagree, too. Do it right the first time. DO it so that physicians all across the country don’t give up their practices. Do it so that the middle class won’t be carrying the burden. Do it so that Medicare isn’t cut. Do it so that it truly benefits the people of this country, not just to get it done to get it done. It’s too important to be shoved through like this.

How about taking back this present to the Health Care industry and Big Pharma, and go back to the Drawing Board in the New Year? That would work for me, and the majority of my fellow Americans.

  • getfitnow

Last I heard, this HC debacle is being punted into Feb so they can deal with unemployment–whatever that means.

  • lightacandle

Well, Obama got what he wanted — an assured stream of corporate money for his re-election campiagn in 2012.

The rest of us got scre___d.

  • Hokma

Obama and the Democrats had no intention of fixing healthcare. Their motive was devious and intended to secure a more permanent majority by forcing more people to be reliant on government for their needs.
Obama should be careful what he wished for because Americans are onto him.

  • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy

I heard that they may try to end it right befoer the SOTU, or push it into Feb, so he doesn’t have to talk abt it in the SOTU.

What I DO know, is that they don’t give a damn what we have to say abt it. I think the supposition that they are doing this to ensure their long-term majority is likely. Oh, how I hope that backfires on them!

  • Mandelay

You’re so right, Rev. Amy … “Do it right the first time.” Are there no leaders left with any courage?
Merry Christmas and Blessings to All! And a special cheer to all the writers and artists at NQ. Let’s keep on fighting!

  • Bronwyn

Amy, this is an incredibly powerful post. I am heartsick about this legislation, and heartsick that our representatives to Washington, D.C. are totally ignoring the American people and doing this solely to make Obama’s ego bigger.

If Hillary were president, I am very certain that she would have already enacted numerous JOBS programs — to build up our economy and to ENLARGE our tax revenues.

We need people employed and able to stay in their homes and to purchase goods — EMPLOYED PEOPLE with SECURE HOMES and BANK ACCOUNTS — before we embark on any new entitlement programs. Especially one that ONLY benefits the huge insurance companies.

I find it utterly appalling that people wil be forced to buy health insurance that they cannot afford, especially since the costs of that health insurance won’t be lower, or sufficiently lower to enable them to afford it.

This is all so wrong-headed, it makes my head hurt.

  • Kathy in CA

I think the Dems will lose a majority in the Senate for sure, and maybe the house. It all depends on how far this scam of a reform makes it to becoming law. One of this issues that is getting some press, but not enough is that for those companies that do not provide health insurance to their employees, they will be fined $750 per employee. Geez, if this becomes law – every employer in the US will pay the fine. Everyone will all of a sudden have to pay for health insurance – 8 to 10 grand. If that happens – the Dems will lose just about every elected position. (That I will will get my license so I can sell these policies – gold mine!!!)

If the Dems have any self preservation left, they will stall this bill until after Nov. 2010.

  • Bronwyn

I am testing my new avatar. That is Maureen O’Hara playing Bronwyn in “How Green Was My Valley.”

  • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy

    Thank you, BH…

I hear you – it is shocking that the COngress has focused on THIS and costing the American people MORE money when we are at new heights of unemployment. Talk abt having taken their eyes off the ball.

Yes, no doubt, Hillary would have rolled up her sleeves, kept her word, and started creating 5 million new green jobs and putting Americans to work. She sure as hell wouldn’t have been engaged in these threatening, coercive deals to salve her own ego. Obama is a petulant child who doesn’t give a DAMN abt most Americans, as he jets off to Hawaii

    Bah, humbug…

Mandelay, thank you so much, and same to you!

  • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy

That’s exactly right, Kathy. Well said.

  • Anti Harkonnen Freedom Fighter

The American people reject this bill and Obama’s handling of the health care issue by a strong majority.
Congresspeople will hear that on the Christmas Break, and some Dem senator or about 40 Dem congresspeople will step up for America and kill this awful, poorly thought out and written bill.
I know some people genuinely believe America needs more government in health care. That’s cool – but this bill is a joke to both the left and the right. The only people defending this bill are stridently partisan Democrats in Congress and Obama’s crew and media supporters.
Activists on the left and right, all GOP politicians, the conservative media and even many MSM journalists truly hate this bill and believe it will fail.
Indeed, there is no coherent strategy in the reform bills – instead, there are many policies that work at cross currents in the same areas that will inevitably lead to bureaucratic stasis and inefficiences, at a minimum.
The only reason Obama and the Dems are pushing this thru now is for political expediency – there is no chance of success in lowering health care insurance premiums or overall costs – all independent analysis of the bill proves this.
Health care is too important to do wrong for political reasons.
    Kill the bill.

lucky for harry reid he lives in Searchlight, nv, a town of about 250 people, so i dont think he will get the earful he deserves. i highly doubt he will have the nerve to show his face here in las vegas which is filled with the senior citizens he has screwed over. someone needs to hang him in effigy outside his office (if he has the nerve to show his face there.) i have written him numerous emails telling him how angry seniors are about this POS H/C plan but of course have recieved no answer. he has sold his soul to the devil (literally) and i hope he burns in hell.

  • TeakWoodKite

Rep. Louise M. Slaughter a microbiologist? Who knew?

I guess she couldn’t find a better petri dish than Congress to study. There are all manner of viral microbes to catalog.

Ya think that Marty Nesbit is out golfing with BO in HI.??

  • Diana L. C.

I emailed both my senators and my representative my thoughts about the way this supposed health care reform has been put together and my scorn for them for helping to pass it (they are Democrats) when the polls show Americans don’t want it.

I got back long-winded boilerplate responses about what a wonderful thing they are doing because they “hear” all the time how it needs to happen.

    I give up!

  • b mathews

does anyone know if we can bring a class action suit against the government for fraud, coersion, bribery, threats, unethical behavior, the list goes on and on. i cant believe so many people are against this POS HC bill and yet we are powerless to stop it (short of an all out revolution. maybe we should just take barry’s advice “if they bring a knife to the fight, we’ll bring a gun”
another idea we might want to try is to ask every candidate running for election in 2010 if they will consider impeaching obama and make that a criteria for our vote.

I’m just testing the new comment technology. I like the above

However, my comment on the new ‘healthscare’ bill would not be printable so I defer. What a debasing of our democratic process.

  • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy

If only this wasn’t so true…

  • tomcj

I think any bill that actually passed and covered so many more people is a miracle. With the GOP dead set against any coverage, with the Senate’s new 60 Vote needed to even discuss any Bill, and with the 17 year delay since Bill Clinton’s attempt was so completely trounced, it will be another 17 years before this moment arrives again if at all.

Old people and those who have coverage do not want those who do not have coverage to ever get access tp doctors and medical care. The Majority of the Have’s oppose the Have-Not’s because they think it is a zero sum game.

If people do not want there to ever be Health Insurance for all, then by all means “go back to the Drawing Board”.

But let us have no illusions that passing any kind of bill was not almost impossib;e.

Re-do this bill=kill Health Care Coverage for another 17 years.

From what I understand, there have already been suits filed against this health care bill. Groups on both sides of the aisle are VERY unhappy abt this bill. I heard that one left wing group is doing an ad showing Obama as a senator talking abt how mandates are unacceptable, and another time when he spoke in favor of the public option.

And a number of state AGs are investigating it for Constitutionality. That’s a start, right?

Right on, R3 Amy and Rep. Slaughter. Dump the Senate mafia bill and start again, this time with incremental steps, i.e., stop trying to rob Medicare and Social Security like various pols have attempted over the years, OR allow 55-64 aged citizens to buy into Medicare, OR allow importation of cheaper drugs from Canada, OR, the big OR for me, reimburse doctors for Medicare patients at market value.

bho the fraud, insurance/pharma/media/banking/Wall Street stooge, never wanted the public option. As usual for him, he lied about the public option to get votes and then continued playing puppet for the oligarchy/fascists.

Merry Christmas and THANK YOU to NoQuarter and many individual bloggers like our R3 Amy who take time and effort to inform us of American news that the corrupt, fascist media hides. A Happy, Active, AMERICAN New Year to you all.

R3A, Rep. Slaughter is another legislator we are going to have to send money to when it comes time for re-election. Because her bosses are probably going to ‘constructively’ fire her. (That’s when you do everything but the actual deed, like constructively evicting someone from an apartment by turning off the heat, water, and electricity.)
U.S. SENATOR BEN NELSON (D-NE) to the CITIZENS of NEBRASKA: “You’re not the boss of me!”

United States Senator Ben Nelson (D-NE) receives his $174,000 annual salary through payroll checks drawn from the U.S. Treasury but he actually works for the Corporation. The DNC Services Corporation. So, while the U.S. Constitution authorizes his office in the Legislative branch of the federal government, Mr. Nelson takes his marching orders directly from the DNC. And even though the Declaration of Independence proclaims that governments “deriv[e] their just powers from the consent of the governed,” given the choice between following the lead of his constituents back home in Nebraska or the dictates of officials of the Corporation, again, Mr. Nelson defers to them.

Surely, if the enlightened thinkers who conceived and drafted the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution had intended to transfer any portion of the power of the people into the domain of the major political parties in this way, they would have mentioned political parties somewhere, anywhere in these auspicious documents. But they didn’t. The recent conduct of Senator Nelson points to prima facie evidence why.

  • arabella trefoil

Good. I hope all the Democrats lose. Let’s start from scratch with new and better people. Here is photo of Nancy Pelosi walking along the sidewalk.

The shenanigans of the democrats have made many Americans angry enough to bite ten-penny nails in two! I’m one of them!
The attorney generals of some states are looking at the constitutional issues, but legal challenges could be endless. What a mess from the world’s greatest deliberative body!
    Okay, let’s eat! LOL!

  • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy

Absolutely, jbjd, I’d be willing to send money to Slaughter, especially if she continues to stand up for the people, unlike Ben Nelson (too fitting, the “You’re not the boss of me!” piece). And no doubt, you are right abt what they will have in store for someone who actually speaks from the conviction of her beliefs…

Texas, thank you – it is my pleasure. Excellent comment abt the step by step approach that SHOULD be taken by those who are supposed to represent us (see jbjd’s comment abt Nelson)…

  • I’m a Linda too

Spot on Amy, I agree witchu’.

And at least we know we tried. These Dem’s will have to deal with their own conscience. And may the rest of our citizens help make that clear in the upcoming elections.

The Democratic Auction in DC that put together this HI MED (health insurance mandate & expansion by Democrats) bill was terrible because they are all looking at taking care of their special interests and donors and not doing what is right for the country.

“Bills of attainder, ex post facto laws, and laws impairing the obligations of contracts, are contrary to the first principles of the social compact, and to every principle of sound legislation. … The sober people of America are weary of the fluctuating policy which has directed the public councils. They have seen with regret and indignation that sudden changes and legislative interferences, in cases affecting personal rights, become jobs in the hands of enterprising and influential speculators, and snares to the more-industrious and less-informed part of the community.” James Madison, Federalist Number 44, 1788.

I just heard Carl Rove on FOX AND Florida is not the only state allowed to keep Advantage for seniors so does CA. So….if you live in one of the other states you’ll receive a notice your advantage is canceled shortly after “the o” signs the bill but…..AARP have a new plan more expensive but available. WOW!

  • kenoshamarge

This is just a very bad bill. The public knows it and yet the Democrats think that once it’s passed we will all fall in line like little robots. Perhaps they believe that if they keep spinning a sows-ear as a silk purse we will all be fooled. I don’t think so. I think this is going to come back and bite them big time.

I know that both Wisconsin Senators, Kohl and Feingold, have lost my vote for supporting this atrocity. I suspect there are a lot of other voters in my state who feel the same. Especially with the financial woes Wisconsin is having. Seeing Ben Nelson get paid for his vote with $$$ for Nebraska is apt to cause a lot of anger. >:o IMO

  • kenoshamarge

Trying an avatar. Be patient my friends, I am a technidiot.

  • Touchet

I remember posting a while back about how this bill would definately pass even though a lot of you were sure it wouldn’t due to its opposition with the general public.

This happens with every bill that goes though congress lately. They are completely and utterly bought out by corporate america. Corporate america pays and sponsor their reeclection with help from their buddies at the media outlets. Their is no accountabilitiy because THEY control what you see and hear.

But yet year after year, they continue to do the same thing, and they continue to just mysteriously get re-elected. I can not believe that this is just due to the lack of long term memory in the electorate. We are headed downhill fast. We are still a representative democracy. But the represented is not the people but rather the select few who have enough money to control to the media. It won’t be long before they control the internet. Its only a matter of time.

look for bad press again against the Clintons. Clinton was like JFK. When he got into office, he was too much on the side of middle america. The corporations can’t have that. Obama has lost his credibility, he is over. Look for the media to start bashing the clintons again and start goo gooing over some new face that they love. The new corporate messiah. Wise up people before its too late.

BO has to bribe the press so that they can spew his propaganda about how great the HRC bill is. :(

Well, the new format has this old dog wondering if he can still learn some new tricks. Do I dare to eat a peach? Anyway, Happy Holidays, Merry Christmas, Happy New Year to all. May O-iconoclasm continue to reign supreme on NQ!

NY State’s Medicaid program, one of the largest budgeted programs in the country, will be mortally wounded by Reid’s Bill. On top of that, NY State residents now also get to pay for Nebraska’s Medicaid … forever. Any response, Sen. Schumer?

Off Topic … HooRah! Obama has surrendered sovereignty to Interpol. Bah, Humbug!

Hear! Hear! Great post Amy. Let’s start this health thing all over again–and think about health reform, not more taking from the taxpayers and getting less.

This “health care” bill is a POS! I’m one of the ones w/o health care & I hardly see how this will end up helping me- just get my Medicare all screwed up just before I become eligible! Screw all of them & the ass they rode in on! Kill the bill- and start the hell over!

THis bill is a major POS! I am one of the ones w/o health care, but I don’t see how this is gonna help. It’s just gonna screw up Medicare right before I become eligible. Thanks a lot! Screw all of those who voted for it and the ass they rode in on!
