Mandatory service was the norm in S. Korea (for ROK and KATUSA soldiers) when I was stationed over there in the late 70's. My (now X) husband was a Katusa. (korean augmentee to the US Army) he got that honored status because he could speak English well and he had some college under his belt. Kids that were just players ended up as ROK and they were PUSHED TO THE VERY LIMIT and were treated pretty badly compared to US counterparts. So the goal was to be a Katusa so you could work at the US bases, get the benefits, etc. Maybe if the US had some form of mandatory service with a CHOICE whether to do real military training or some other service in the red cross type venue? Americans do NOT have the mental mind set or background or parental prodding and force of pride that MOST Asian families enstill in their children almost from birth! to STUDY, to HONOR THEIR FAMILY, to be CALM AND PATIENT, etc. (just my opinion) draft would never fly in America today.
