It's real easy to whine on a blog and pine for some unrealistic solution. It 'aint Star Trek- we don't have these handy little devices that harmlessly tell us what compounds are where. just by pointing it. Even Superman couldn't see trough lead. If you know of some affordable technology than can see inside a terroirist's body and tell the difference between feces and an explosive compound without bombarding us with radiation, than do tell.

You want to be 100% safe on an airplane, than we should all be incapacitated- drugged and/or restrianed so that no aciton is possible. Only then are we safe. Only absolute force can stop someone who is willing to die. . .How's that mind reader device coming along, by the way?

That's the problem with freedom- in the hands of evil it is a weapon. Are you willing to give it up to be safe?

He also paid cash for his ticket and did not have a checked bag that went along with his name. I thought that those were already big red flags.

Larry-

When I go to see my sister in East Hampton,MA, I fly into Hartford's airport. It is a small
airport that I believe have these sniffing booths that all passengers go through. After you go through security, you are directed to a booth. The door closes behind you. I believe that some kind of agent is released trying to detect chemicals or explosive agents that may be on you. After screening the automated voice tells you that you can exit. I understand that these are very expensive pieces of equipment, but are they not worth it, so that these incidents can be prevented.

I have never posted here before, but I enjoy reading all of your intelligent commentary.

Let me susplain, while there is no machine outside a GC Mass Spectrometer
or a OVA and/or HNU whch can detect the liquids, of course in the case of the Mass Spec it would take some 8 hours to come up with the parameters of the liquid and the OVA and/or a PID Analyizer like a HNU are just down and dirty analizers. However the electromagnetic signature of a detonator can be detected by a mag and even if its not 100% fool-proof it would be slightly better than nothing at all..At least the mag being set off would tell the TSA Agents...Hey There lookie at me.......

The problem? Last i heard there was only one company that could do this... But then again TSa does not like sole contracts.......................

According to a preliminary analysis by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the device contained PETN, also known as pentaerythritol, a highly explosive substance.

The explosive powder on his body was undetected - first when he boarded a KLM Flight 588 in Lagos, Nigeria and second, when he connected at Amsterdam to Northwest 253 destined to Detroit, US saying he was travelilng to attend a religious seminar. According to ABC, he was on a US intelligence watch list but not on the US government's no-fly list.

In the interest of getting my facts correct.

I guess on the bright side, individuals are taking security into their own hands. Apparently a passenger tackled this guy right away and the suspect only suceeded in burning himself.

I think one of the best ways to be safe is to have alert passengers, crew, and security. There is no technology that beats a human being paying attention. People in prisons kill each other and take hostages with all sorts of ordinary items they've turned into weapons. Unfortunately humans are kind of ingenious with figuring out ways to kill each other. There is nothing we can do to make people absolutely safe besides maybe forcing everybody to fly naked.

The Gov dropped the ball, but isn't that often the case? I think they have a responsibility to the American people, but when all that stands between you and disaster is the Gov, you better have a back up plan. Our Gov has trouble regulating cabbage, let alone airline passengers.
