Obama: Golf Addict?

golfcottle1In her article, “Bunker Mentality,” The New Republic‘s Michelle Cottle contends that Obama can improve his presidential performance by giving up his obsession with his golf game. At the least, she believes, he could improve his image: “POTUS has a prime opportunity to regroup, reload, and revamp his image” as a serious-minded president seen by the American people as firmly in control and focused on his job.

During the 2008 race, Obama’s golf outings drew less notice than his battles on the hard court. But, now that he’s firmly ensconced in the Oval Office, the sticks have come out of the closet as Obama constantly looks to squeeze in a few holes: on Father’s Day, during the family’s summer holiday on the Vineyard, immediately upon touching down from his June trip to Europe.

It is often noted that this president hit the links more frequently in his first nine months than the reared-on-golf George W. did in his first two years (after which W. conspicuously swore off the game out of respect for the troops).

Currently ranked eighth on Golf Digest’s list of presidential golfers (sandwiched between Clinton and Reagan), Obama seems intent on moving up the ladder–despite reports that he’s something of a duffer.

Most interesting is the subtitle of Ms. Cottle’s piece: “Barack Obama’s dangerous obsession with golf.

I suppose it’s possible that Obama uses the golf course as an escape from the increasingly difficult responsibilities of the presidency. But Ms. Cottle suggests (or does she?) that golf could be a real addiction, a “dangerous” addiction, for Obama. She writes:

Seriously. Its venerable White House history notwithstanding, golf is a dubious pastime for any decent, sane person, much less for this particular president. Why would a leader vowing to shake up Washington–to alter the very nature of politics–sell his soul to a leisure activity that screams stodgy, hyperconventional Old Guard?

There are signs that Obama has been nursing a creeping golf addiction for some time now. He took up the game a little more than a decade ago as a newbie state senator hoping to bond with more rural, conservative colleagues. Next thing you know, he was hooked–playing for cash, fretting over his form, and goading staffers to cut out of work early for a quick round. …

The evidence of Obama’s “addiction” was on display in Hawaii this week when he could scarcely tear himself away from the links to deliver a perfunctory address, read off a sheet of paper, on the near-bombing of the Detroit-bound airplane, after which he rushed back to the links in his limousine entourage. Clearly, his priorities are askew.

But is Cottle serious? Is this piece a gentle nudge to a politician she desperately supports and who, she feels, could be spending his time foolishly? Or is this more a satirical piece, meant to make fun by suggesting the only thing standing between political nirvana and the US is, ahem, golf?

Either way, I can’t like this article. I couldn’t care less how much a President plays golf as long as he gets the job done. The President can sign legislation on the back nine, as far as I’m concerned. Golf is not Mr. Obama’s problem, nor ours. Mr. Obama is the problem.

I could care less what he does with those golf clubs, but I could also give a few suggestions what he can do with them.  :-D

    Problem?……There’s no problem.

    Does o kick the ball?

Condi rice also became addicted to golf.  She learned the gome just a few years and played so much her game improved into the 80′s.  You know she was playing alot of golf for that to happen!  And as a result we had no diplomacy, just wars.  This is the same with obama.  all golf, no work. Obama is an addict, be it drugs, cigarettes, golf, or lies.  If only he would get addicted to work. We might stand a chance

  • Peggy Sue

Golf, smolf.  I don’t care if the man is addicted to golf or not.  But if this is written by an Obama supporter, it’s just more hang-wringing and angst, trying to find a reason why the man has fallen short of expectations.  The flurry of articles questioning Obama’s fitness, attention, and serious devotion to the role of POTUS is pretty amazing from former supporters.  At least the 11-dimensional chess meme has disappeared.

And as if it’s a surprise that the man is flailing.  Only in the election of 2008 [at least in my limited memory] was inexperience and lack of accomplishment touted as a virtue.

Frankly, I don’t know which is worse: Obama spending an inordinate amount of time on the golf course.  Or spending time in DC.  He doesn’t seem well-prepared for either.

    Depressing!

Meanwhile on Dec 16, 2009 Øbama did this, something that literally allows INTERPOL to enter the US and make arrests of US citizens.

golf is a dubious pastime for any decent, sane person
    Well, there goes Eisenhower’s reputation.
Is this an attack on Obama or an attack on golf? What is the verdict on basketball? I’d be happier with a more sensible analysis.

Happy New Year to all my friends at NQ and many thanks to Larry for a site where everyone is welcome. Please show your gratitude to him by configuring your bookmarks to make it your default portal to Amazon, as I have.

Best Wishes to you all for a happy and prosperous 2010.

BO is an addict. This is a prime directive of a Narrsist

    ====
Narcissism and drug addiction have similarities in that the person relies on something from the outside to fill up their empty inside.  The narcissist depends on the attention and admiration from others (whether this attention is imagined or real) for their sense of well-being.  They do things to draw attention to them and create situations of achievement that set them up for congratulations and possible envy from others.  This is done in much the same way that an addict makes sure their supply of drugs is steady and secure.

Does that make the White House a caddy shack?

  • IndayHill

Jim, are you positive the Executive Order 12425 was signed for the INTERPOL to freely enter USA to arrest USA citizens ?
Maybe there is that fine line that states the INTERPOL  arrest the non-fan of his golfing excapade from boredom :-D .

He should dress up like a cowhand and clear brush and chop wood like Bush did. I wonder if deep down he daydreams about being Tiger Woods? I wonder who Tiger daydreams about being… Obama maybe? They should swap places for a while. Obama would probably like living like Tiger and Tiger would probably make a better POTUS.

  • IndayHill

Opps..not with Michelle watching his every movement like a hawk !
Tiger was trained by his father to work hard for the money since childhood .He honestly sweat hard for his wealth, unlike you know who. Who knows, Obama might turn a pro after his one term of being a POTUS. IMO, he’ll be a better golfer than where he is now. More hours in the golf course than in the Oval Office.
He might even create a new game: kick the ball to the hole (see picture above).

According to the senior official, the holiday threat briefing, one in a series of regularly-scheduled sessions with top counter-terrorism officials, was held in the White House Situation Room on December 22. Present were representatives of agencies involved in counter-terrorism policy and operations, including Attorney General Eric Holder, Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano and FBI Director Robert Mueller. The CIA and National Intelligence Directors Office were represented by deputy agency heads: CIA deputy director Steven Kappes, and David Gompert, the principal deputy to National Intelligence Czar Dennis Blair. Also present was Michael Leiter, director of the National Counter-terrorism Center, a unit of the Intelligence Czar’s office which was created after 9/11 to ensure that intelligence reporting about possible terrorist plots was shared quickly among all US agencies who might have some capability to do something about it.————————————————Q: where was “President” Obama when this meeting was taking place?
    A: in Hawaii
Q: why was he not in the meeting?
A: because he has confidence in his people to get the job done
    Q: like Neopolitano?
A: yes, his next appointment to the US Supreme Court–according to rat boy chuc todd
Q: what was he doing in Hawaii while this critical meeting was going on?
A: playing golf, splashing on the surf, and getting ready for his  gala New Years Eve Party–one of the thirty he has had this holiday season.
    Q. does that not seem a bit excessive?
A: no–not for a party animal like him!
Q: but he was in the loop was he not?
A: certainly–he gets hourly briefings and has assured us can run the country from the back of a golf cart.
Q: but golf requires concentration.  Won’t these briefings  interfere with his ability to concentrate on his golf game?
A: it is all a matter of priorities. If they interfere with his golf game then  the country can wait,

  • It’s obvious

that Obama does not have a clue what he is doing and he is not up to the task as president.  The whole concept of shoving forth Obama was to get a black radical in the White House so if anyone ever questions the inane policies or his ineptitude, the ubiquitous race card was the ready play.

Obama gets to play golf, basketball, go the the gym, have free entertaninment, free meals, fly around on private planes, etc, like he is in one big country club.  In return, his job is to go out and read speeches someone writes and get on a lib TV show and peddle the BS.  The radicals formulate all of the policies and Obama is the salesman.  How long will this circus last?  As long as there are enough drones who continue to fawn over this clown.

Maybe what Cottle is trying to tell this arrogant elitist is that he looks precisely iike what he really is: an arrogant, elitist, dilettante.

Americans are suffering. Obama plays golf.

    The picture isn’t pretty.

  • JustSaying

He thinks he’s the  new Tiger Woods!
He’s a waste of humanity….he constantly flaunts his extravagent ways!
People are hurting out here and he’s off on vacations, excessive trips, parties in Washington up the ying ying…He’s a “classless” leader and an embarassment to this country!

  • stodghie

just saying, you put it very well! i second those comments.

  • hokma

I could not believe that this guy was actually golfing.

Obama really does not get it at all!!!!!

I flew out of the country on the 25th and would like to have known that there was a terror threat warning so I could have decided whether I wanted to continue or not.

This goof ball’s golfing photos should be Exhibit A in his impeachment trial in 2011 when the GOP takes over control of the Congress.

Clearly he thinks national security is a friggin joke and treats the issue and the people involved that way.

Every single day that goes by Obama proves again and again why he was never remotely qualified to be President.
