Obama Playing with CIA Fire

CIA officers, particularly on the operations side of the house, are accustomed to being the whipping boys or scapegoats for craven politicians. They have seen it from Republicans (think Valerie Plame) and they are now seeing it from Democrats in the person of Barack Obama. Obama has not spent enough time in Washington but his inexperience in this matter is showing. He has allowed Rahm Emmanuel, David Axelrod and lower level snuffies like NSC toady Denis McDonough to circulate the bogus claim that the failed terrorist attack on Christmas Day was the fault of the CIA. These clowns are setting their boss up for an ass whupping.

Obama’s blame the CIA is eliciting some strong pushback among my former colleagues. The following from a good friend who served in several high threat posts over a distinguished career is representative:

Oops! Better pull back from blaming the CIA. More news is coming out on the seven CIA officers killed at Khost base, right on the pointy end of the spear of countertarrorism. AP is reporting that one of those killed was Chief of Base at Khost, a mother of three. Note to Rhambo: it isn’t going to look good trying to shift the blame to CIA for the underwear bomber when a mother of three in command of a CIA operation nose to nose with Al Quaeda was just killed. Better find another fall guy.

Sorry if the above offends some NQ readers, but I seek to draw a contrast between those who are willing to go out and fight for us at the pointy end of the spear, and it doesn’t get any more pointy than at Khost, and a White House that looks at everything through the prism of how it effects their domestic political fortunes. I still haven’t heard anything from the White House on this yet, but perhaps after he finishes up the last hole, the President may take some time off from vacation to comment one way or the other.

My friend is not an isolated voice. Other close friends are preparing to deploy to high threat areas and share similar sentiments. Keep trying to make the CIA a punching bag and it will punch back. It is time for Barack Obama to act like a fucking leader and take responsibility for the troops he commands. Instead he is acting like a child. Blaming others and blaming others. That may work well in the world of Chicago politics but that is not the way a leader behaves.

  • bart

But then, he’s not much of a leader, is he?  Condolences to the families.  What a nightmare.

  • sowsear

Sounds like the CIA let its defenses down by letting the bomber on base without checking him out at the door.

  • Larry Doyle

LJ and to your friend who shared those moving sentiments,

Please know that multitudes upon multitudes of Americans are in your corner and thank you for your dedication and service to our country.

True friendship, support, and leadership are never so shallow as to wantonly and shamelessly redirect blame in an immature and unprofessional fashion.

Barack and his cronies should learn the lesson espoused by Harry Truman…remember where that buck stops.

America is watching more closely and speaking more loudly. Let’s take back our country.

LJ, thank you to you and all those here at NQ for bringing some sanity to the madness.

On my way home this afternoon, I heard a report that the President had sent an open letter to the CIA, an expression of condolence for those lost in Afghanistan.  So, perhaps the Prez and his underlings are beginning to realize the folly of pointing fingers at people who are on the front line.  Obama is a seasoned backpedaller.  I’m sure they’ll find someone to blame and have read earlier the Administration is in full defensive mode.

Leadership?  Not so much.  The Titanic is rudderless but the fools keep telling us all is well.  But I agree with Larry D.–America is beginning to wake up, watch more closely and speaking more loudly.  I heard it on my holiday at home.  Politics and the lack of leadership were prime subjects of conversation [I didn't even have to initiate].  Had an amazing conversation with a physician my husband saw–freaking mad as hell.

Prayers for the dead and their families.  And best wishes for us all in 2010.

  • Guest

Any case of a suicide bomber invited on base yet not vetted is inexcusable. Sadly we learn from our mistakes in war time, yet there are times we don’t get a second chance.

Rarely does something good happen in a war zone.

    Here’s to a better 2010.

  • Citizen70

Obama continues to speak power to truth.  He’s a disgrace.

  • bart

Honestly, I think that’s a lesson these folks already know.  I’m betting there is more to it than just lax security.  He could easily have been a “sleeper” for the Taliban (who have taken credit).

It may have been a calculated risk – to not use any locals would make the position untenable.  But the risk of making a bad choice. . .

  • Jackie

    Larry,

Thank-you once again for the clear statement of fact. Obama is no leader.  Not by any stretch of imagination. Take a look at this Wall Street Journal article it eloquently backs the facts.

Condolences to you, Larry and your colleagues and the families of those in the CIA who put themselves on the line and lost their lives.

  • xathnealon

You’ve got it right – this prez is not a prez, he’s not anything – this is not an administration, this is a PR machine in the WH – I fear more and more attacks are coming – I know nothing about the CIA but I hope they’re joining together to stop the number one enemy in the WH – Axelrod’s PR strategy is the source of avery one of BO’s private and public moves - A has no conscience – none – look at his firms he ran in Chicago – God help us.

  • candymarl

Note to OBama: do not screw with the spooks. That is all.

  • jbjd

The women and men acting in service to the United States of America earn our respect by virture of such service.  Those who lose their lives in the pursuit of service to country merit the undying gratitude of those of us who remain safely behind.

Condolensces to the families of these patriots lost.

US camps in Afghanistan have been the target of repeated suicide and sniper attacks over the years. The distrust of locals among US personnel is expressed as deep and growing. If a man being courted as an informant proceeds to show up in an Afghan army uniform and blow the place up, an official reaction of CIA shock and dismay is hardly more reassuring or acceptable than it is credible.

“There’s still a lot to be learned about what happened,” said CIA spokesman George Little. “The key lesson is that counterterrorism work is dangerous.

    Gee. You don’t say…

larry, you are an excellent spokesman for what is right and wrong. so sad you have to do it!

  • catherine

Larry, please accept my sincerest condolences for the loss of your colleagues in Afghanistan. I know the CIA is often portrayed as villainous by those who either hate the USA or are too naive and gullible to understand how the world really operates, but personally I’ve always been grateful to people like you and the men and women of our Intelligence community who often times place themselves at great risk to keep us safe back home.
    Thank you.

  • VinceP1974

I hope there’s a group in the CIA who will be just as devoted to undermining Obama as there was a group who were devoted to undermining Bush.

  • Obama is a farce

“It is time for Barack Obama to act like a fucking leader and take responsibility for the troops he commands. Instead he is acting like a child. Blaming others and blaming others.”

When has Obama ever taken responsibilty?  The way this jerk operates it is always someone else’s fault, never his.  All he has done since he started campaigning until now has been to blame Bush.

Obama’s supremacist attitude was obvious when he got caught in Wright’s hell hole where he resided for 20 years.  Did the jerk even attempt to apologize for his actions for a membership to a black liberation theology church and close friendship with the sick bastard who ran it?  Obama’s response was give a pathetic speech about race where he blamed everyone else.  Anyone who was not wise to Obama after that episode already had their head up Obama’s ass.

  • ogee

I’m surprised that obammy sent out condolences because he usually dogs and blames the CIA if he is not thwarting them. And the CIA woman that got killed was a mother of 3. I pity the kids.

  • annie

I praise all that give up their lives to keep us safe lately I do not feel safe and things seem to be getting worse. I am so sick of Obama and his team never taking responsibility for what happens they are all so inexperienced and over their heads. I cannot believe that we have a terroist attemt and he is playing golf and when he finally decides to finally make a statement he has the audacity to go back and play more golf what an ass.

  • FLDemFem

This is the sort of thing that happens when you have a president who is all prick and no balls. The Islamist extremists have taken his measure and they are now in open attack mode because they know he doesn’t have the ‘nads to stand up to them. Frankly, I am waiting for him to blame America for the terrorists attacking her. I hope he does it soon, impeachment can’t come to fast for me.

  • Jack

BTW, how is the Secret Service liking it that they have to work over Xmas and New Years?  I recall they do not, and Presidents do not take burdensome trips during this time, just go to Camp David or stay at home.

    Is my memory correct?

  • I’m a Linda too

How could anyone but an Obot be offended by your very clear and sober description?

Spot on.  And might I add, Obama is making us very unsecure and a laughing stock.

  • Jackie

In the past 4 months there has been an event per month on. From Us Citizens being arrensted in Pakistan looking to become terrorists to the massacre in Ft. Hood to the family arrested for plotting and now the Fruit of the Boom fellow.

The attacks are coming faster and are getting much more successful.

This is WAR and all Americans need to accept it and fight like hell for our freedom.  We must vocally insist on the best security and not worry about hurting Muslim’s feelings.

If the muslim community wants to not be singled out then they MUST police thier own congregations and like the NIgerian Father report on the evil doings of those around them.

GO over to Hotair.com and take a look at a few of their links.  Food for thought.

Our condolences to the families and friends of those CIA killed in Afghanistan.

“… and a White House that looks at everything through the prism of how it effects their domestic political fortunes….”

Oh, but the mindless goose-steppers, aka obamatrons, would say That One is only ensuring that his actions are in accordance with the “hopes for change” of the electorate.

I am so sick of the mind-numbing claptrap coming from the left-wing dullards, including the shiftless slacker who is currently squatting in the WH.

Something stinks here…. You know the Agency is being thrown under the bus…. The Agency knows its being thrown under the bus….. The IC knows the Agency is being thrown under the bus…. And the White House is throwing the Agency under the bus… But why? When they know where to really fix the blame…. Whats really going on here?

Is the DNI pushing this to insert his power even more? Does he want one of his Canoe U buddies in as the new DCI? Man there is something going on here besides fixing the balme that I just can’t put my finger on……..

Many happy returns to the NQ family. Happy new year to all.

Mr. Johnson several threads back I was hoping that the CIA would not be the scapegoat. That was Monday.  I never dreamed that if the scapegoating gained traction it would come from the WH.
I saw yesterday, that the white house counsels office had to issue an ethics waiver allowing John Brennan to be apart of the investigation BO is to be briefed on. What does his “former” employer have to do with any conflict of interest regarding this investigation?

I pray for the families of your brethern lost in battle. It would be tacky to ask why this person was allowed on base without being subjected to a basic search, but I have to ask. “As a sign of trust”, is a flimsy and deadly security protocol.

I saw a blip on CNN that “senior intellegence officials” vow “revenge”. If it is to be that way, I hope it is served cold.

We have a real chickenshit in the front row. You recall how tone deaf BO was in the primaries? Well now it has progressed to a bad case of Tinnitus.

  • I’m a Linda too

Hey, but Barry is continuing his vaca as planned.  The life of LUXury.  And today the prick even had a theater shut down so we could pay to have the first family view Avatar in a Theater in HI.  Priorities!

“Keep trying to make the CIA a punching bag and it will punch back.”

Larry, I’m waiting… they should’ve started punching back when Holder said he’d put them on trial.  I for one don’t believe he’s eligible for his office under the Constitution — that document, remember, that’s supposed to protect us from the likes of the Won’s administration!  Come on, CIA, we’ll have your back!  You’ve done an amazing job keeping us safe… don’t stop now.  Kick butt!

  • TeakWoodKite

Canymarl and LadyDawnelle, Happy New Year to you both. Thanks for all great insights and comments. Best Wishes to you both in he coming year!

That could be, we don’t know what the whole story is yet.  What we do know is that getting intel on terrorists at the pointy end of the spear has always been dangerous.  If you let your guard down for a second, you can be dead before that second is up–if you’re lucky.  If you’re unlucky, you get kidnapped and tortured to death like the late COS Beirut Bill Buckley.  In the terrorists’ version of torture, however, they don’t have a medical team standing by to intervene if they feel that the interrogators are going too far, or battalions of lawyers agonizing over just what constitues “too far.”  Like us however, they do make videos–and we have a few of their tapes.  For some reason, the ACLU doesn’t care about the release of “their” videotapes, probably because the ACLU doesn’t believe that American intelligence officers in terrorist captivity have Constitutional rights.  If you wonder why many experienced intelligence professionals object to torture, ask one who is so inclined whether they have ever seen “their” tapes.  The answer may well be yes.

  • Anonymous

Well said, a PR machine indeed.  Obama is most definitely not a leader, and too often acts like a spoiled, petulant child.

Larry, such a sad time for the CIA, and for our country.  My heart goes out to those who serve our country without recognition, and too often, with blame instead of praise.  To their families, no words will suffice for the sacrifices they have made, including this, the ultimate sacrifice, but many of us care deeply, and thank them from the bottoms of our hearts…

  • Retired

The thing is, CIA officers are not particularly inclined to undermine any President.  What we are inclined to do is support and defend the Constitution of the United States because that’s what we took an oath to do.
We are, however, human, and we despise it when elected officials lie to our fellow citizens.  Being drilled in secrecy until it is a second nature, however, we pretty much suck it up until said elected officials accuse us of lying, particularly to our fellow citizens.  Then, being human, we become inclined to use the most powerful weapon that we have at our disposal, the weapon that lying politicians most fear, which is the truth.  You cannot walk across that shield and motto every day that you are in Headquarters without the power of the truth eventually sinking in.
And that its what lying politicians fear the most.  They know that we know what is really going on, and they are told by their advisors that because we are intelligence professionals, it is in our nature to keep our mouths shut and not hoist them on their own petard of lies.
That may have been true in the past when the lies were yours, and you did not involve us.  But when you start falsly accusing us of lying, and start exploiting the ignorance of the American public in matters of intelligence to lay blame at our doorstep in the interests of political expedicency, do not be suprised if there is blowback in the form of the truth coming out.  From the machinations of the recent health care political exercise, we know that you fear the truth.  And fear it you should.

  • Retired

Politically, it’s easy to throw the Agency under the bus because we have no constituency.  Who cares about a bunch of shifty, lying spies?

  • Retired

Any punches will be well-timed and well-aimed, and will contain the one thing that it would appear our current administration cannot abide–the truth.  And be assured that those throwing the punches will be heartsick at the necessity of doing so.

  • TeakWoodKite

BO lies. Put your finger on that dorian scale.

  • TeakWoodKite

Retired first Happy New year, second, where is this animosity at the WH coming from? Or is it really just a clueless message team? Who has the ax?

Does someone have the vault copy?

  • Retired

Teak, the animosity comes from (1) an ignorance of what CIA does and what type of people choose a career in it, (2) a loathing of people who actually mean what they say when they take their oath of office to support and defend the Constitution, and (3) a fear of smart, capable people so close to the centers of power who cannot be seduced into selling out their country for personal political gain.  Think of who, just in the past decade, has shown animosity toward the Agency.  Consider those in the White House, on the Hill, and in various Cabinet departments.  What is the common thread?  Those who bear animosity toward the Agency have been, by and large, themselves corrupted by the choice of politics over their fellow citizens.

  • Jazzman

Yeah Retired of course your right but in this case there is going to be blowback. The truth will come out, one way or the other, especially with guys like you, LJ, Mel, Ray and others who were once with the IC.  It will not be pleasant either. It just does not make political sense especially with Pennetta as DCI, who is close to Rhambo….

Say what you wish about Rhambo but the man is an experienced, seasoned and very clever politician…Blaming the Agency at this point is plainly a rookie and stupid mistake….That’s why I am miffed on why point the finger at the Agency when all the fact are not even in yet and the facts will come out…..

  • dormantdem

first, Happy New Year to ALL…super place to visit each and everyday.

Larry, thanks for your insight. Please keep up your insight regarding the CIA, they are getting the shaft from this inExperienced non leader.

  • b mathews

and that POS in the WH cant take 5 minutes away from his golf game  to make a statement about the cia massacre.  his annoyance over having his vacation interrupted by the christmas day bomber ,was obvious to one and all. his speech was about the lamest ever. even Tweety didnt have the  nerve to call it one of the bestest, most historical speech EVAH!!!

  • stodghie

b matthews, thanks for pointing out the lack of common sense and decorum that o has regarding the deaths of the cia members in the massacre.

  • vbonnaire

Happy New Year, Larry.  On the occasion of such a terrible tragedy.
I wish you were running things with your colleagues because I would feel far less worried.  Mean that.

  • Guest

And I would feel far more lied to and taken advantage of.

  • TeakWoodKite

I am inclined to think “slam dunk” was not the first example of it. There are so many who fit that description of being seduced by the dark side.

I will take door number two. Most of those acts in defense our Constitution are never to see the light of day, and still they toil. Serving in silence.
