Kicking Obama’s Tires

One of the liberties political cartoonists enjoy is making our characters say things they never actually said and get away with it. But I couldn’t make this line up.

In all fairness, inflating tires according to the car manufacturer’s guidelines does slightly improve gas mileage. But you have to check regularly, know the difference between what’s right for the front and back tires, take other conditions into consideration such as road conditions, and make sure not to put in too much air because that carries a whole new set of risks to your tires and safety.

It’s the totality of Obama’s statement that is…er…over-inflated. As John Hinderacker concluded based on Obama’s new energy policy, Obama shouldn’t be left to speak without a teleprompter. Hinderacker did the math:

“Properly inflating your tires can improve gas mileage by 3%. Of course, many people already keep their tires properly inflated, and many more are at least close to being properly inflated. Let’s be generous and assume that one-half of the total possible savings would be realized if we all inflated our tires properly; that’s a net gain of 1.5% fuel efficiency.

Americans drive approximately 2,880 billion miles per year. If we average 24 mpg, we use around 120 billion gallons of gasoline in our vehicles. If, through perfect tire inflation, we improved our collective fuel efficiency by 1.5%, that would be 1.8 billion gallons. A barrel of oil produces around 20 gallons of gasoline, so the total savings available through tire inflation is approximately 90,000,000 barrels of oil annually.

How does this stack up against ‘all the oil that they’re talking about getting off drilling?’”

ANWR: 10 billion barrels
Outer Continental Shelf: 18 billion barrels (estimated; the actual total is undoubtedly much higher, since exploration has been banned)
Oil shale: 1 trillion barrels

So, on the above assumptions, it would take only 11,308 years of proper tire inflation to equal ‘all the oil that they’re talking about getting off drilling.”‘

In the meantime, those wild and crazy guys over at the Republican Party are having some fun whenever they get the chance (and such chances are becoming ever more plentiful).

I guess Obama thinks we’re all too stupid to have kept our tires inflated up to this point anyway. Truth be told, I’ll bet 90% of the cars on the road right now have their tires inflated to the correct pressure.

Yes, overinflating makes it so that the car has less contact with the road and may go out of control easier. It is also hard on the tires.

Heard a tire expert on Rush today who said if you over inflate, it causes the tire to bulge in the middle so that less of the tread touches the road. This causes the tires to wear out much faster. It takes 8 quarts of oil to make a tire he said, so guess what. You will increase the use of oil needed to make tires because they will need to be replaced at a greater rate if people aren’t careful about over inflating. Does no one get this stuff? It’s also dangerous to overinflate in hot weather because of danger of rupture. Besides, most people I know do check their tire inflation already, so how much would it really save? I can’t believe everyone in the media is spending so much time on this topic and on Paris Hilton. Let’s pay attention to the real solutions to the energy problems. John Mc. has laid out a specific plan. Hillary did too. Barry has not.

This is not Obama’s idea, tire pressure requirements are on the tires. Everyone already knows this since they were kids inflating their bike tires. Obama’s statement is disrespectful to anyone other than an idiot. Obama proposed this tire inflation program in lieu of off shore drilling. He has not stated how he would implement such a governmental program to ensure tires are always at the recommended range — he cannot do it without a massive wasteful governmental program that would waste more gas than he could possible save!

The “windfall profits” tax is back, with Barack Obama stumping again to apply it to a handful of big oil companies.

If Senator Obama is as exercised about “outrageous” profits as he says he is, he might also have to turn on a few liberal darlings. Oh, say, Berkshire Hathaway. Warren Buffett’s outfit pulled in $11 billion last year, up 29% from 2006. Its profit margin — if that’s the relevant figure — was 11.47%, which beats out the American oil majors.

Or consider Google, which earned a mere $4.2 billion but at a whopping 25.3% margin. Google earns far more from each of its sales dollars than does Exxon, but why doesn’t Mr. Obama consider its advertising-search windfall worthy of special taxation?

We know what Obama said, he believes that people are not following the manufacturer’s recommended tire pressure and if they did then we could save as much gas as we could with the off shore drilling. Not only is he wrong on the math, he would have to set up a massive wasteful government program in order to ensure all tires are properly inflated all of the time if his idea is to be inacted. This is pure insanity and would not only be extremely costly but would waste much more gas by people driving to locations to get their tires certified.

Although the concept of tires losing air over time is new to Obama everyone else understands this since they were kids. Obama did not lay out a program of ensuring tire were at the proper inflation all of the time — he can’t do it unless people showed up everyday at a government center to get their tires checked.

Obama should lose the election on this issue alone.

Remember when BO called Hillary’s gas tax holiday a ‘gimmick.” He said that it would only save consumers a few dollars. Well, experts are now saying that inflating tires will not even save enough to make a dent because most people already maintain their cars. Using John Hinderacker math, Obama is technically correct. A theoretical savings of 90 million bls of oil is ~250k bls per day which is about the projected output from new off-shore wells in 2030.

That said, it was still a idiotic statement for a politician to make.

Obama’s statement about inflating tires is absolutely insane. Everyone already knows what that there is an optitum tire pressure and it is appears on the tires. Everyone knows this as well as they know how many states there are when they are about 5. Any kid with a bike knows he inflates the tires. Perhaps Obama at 46 yo just figured this out — it does not surprise me. Next week Obama will tell us to rotate our tires.

Obama: Just because you finally found out that tires lose air over time don’t assume everyone else does not. We are not driving around on flat tires!

The cost of implementing this program would be outrageous.

And the question is: what “is” Obama’s energy plan? We drill; we don’t drill. We inflate our tires and hope for the best. We tune our cars? {I guess that’s meant for the those of us who have “older” cars that take a traditional tuning]. We “hope and pray” that alternative energy sources come on line fast enough to fill our needs. Nuclear? Clean coal? Solar ? Wind? Biofuels?

Unless we’re willing to throw evey idea and possibility at the wall, what would the radical environmentalists have us do–come to a complete stop?

Get real. We can conserve out the ying-yang, but I still need to drive my car to work. I’m not ready to give up my air-conditioning or go on a electric rationing programming. If we have to drill then we drill. Burn coal, then burn it as safely as possible. Fire up the nuclear plants [which are safer now than they once were] and take what ever resources we have to invest in the R&D for alternative sources.

But for God’s sake, we have a Nation to run and power. And, “hello” we have plenty of competition out there. If we can put a man on the moon, we can come up with a reasonable, doable energy program to support us into the future. McCain has suggested a 300 million dollar prize for an improved battery design for electric cars and hybrid vehicles.

What’s Obama’s idea? Inflate your tires? Same old, same old Dem ideology–wait for biofuels to come on line? Solar? Wind? Whatever?

We need a bridge for the future. If Obamatrons can’t see that then they’re blind. Or total Luddites.

What is it about “maintaining tire pressure in tires is common knowledge” that you do not understand? This is no different than changing air filters, changing oil, etc. in a car.

There are two points to be made:

1. Obama’s math of equating under inflated tires to the amount of off shore drilling is light years from the truth.

2. In order to ensure that people are driving at the proper tire pressure a government program would have to be developed to do so otherwise he is just talking out of his ass. Any such government program itself would be massive and extremely expensive. More gas would be wasted than saved by people having to drive to a government location to verify their tires are correctly inflated. And how would this program be enforced? The average person will not comply with this silliness. Tires get checked every year at safety inspections, during oil changes, by people themselves, etc. If my tires are 2 pounds under recommended pressure I am not going to waste my time, drive someplace, and spend 50 cents just to put some air in.

Nonsense. What is it about “people already know that tires can lose air overtime” that you do not understand? Everybody knows this along with changing oil, air filters, etc. The average person knows a lot more about cars than Obama. They know a lot more about a lot of things than Obama. WE should be lecturing HIM!

Obama made the claim that people don’t keep there tires properly inflated and if they did the gas savings would be equivalent to all of the off shore drilling. That is ludicrous. And if Obama has the audacity to support such a program then the only way it can be enforced would be through another wasteful government program which Obama loves.

We all know properly inflated tires will help save gas. But that was not Obama’s initial remark. Obama was equating properly infated tires with all the oil we would get from drilling. That is what made his comment so ridiculus. The next day he refined his remark by saying it would save 2-3%. I am sure if we all ride bicycles we would save even more gas. Or how about we all drive at 50MPH we would save even more. He made a silly comment and he is digging himself deeper. I wonder if Obama know what would happen if we over inflate.

Everytime you get an oil change, your tire pressure is check for free. And if you go to one of the common franchises you get free tire checks just by being a regular customer.

Even Paris knows it makes sense to do everything in order to get this crisis under control. But Dr. No is very selective change agent.

Even the piece of trash Bush administration agrees, that tire inflation is one of many things, if done collectively, that would make a difference.
