Reflections in a Dark Room – Part 1

I’ve always had a consuming curiosity about the psychology of charismatics – especially where it affects me, like politics (probably a need to justify my old psychology major). I’m also frequently startled to find that personality traits and behaviors that seem transparently obvious to me are obscure or invisible to folks I would usually consider perceptive. I’ve been thinking about Obama this winter and about what it means that we, the electorate, swallowed his BS without a second thought and what it might mean if we’re actually waking up now…

Charles Addams once drew a wonderful cartoon showing a hall with facing mirrors, a man is looking into the mirrors with an astonished look on his face because far, far down the infinite regression of mirrors… someone is peeking back. These days I’m not sure which one I am.

The American Psychiatric Association’s definitive handbook, the “Diagnostic and Statistical Manual, Fourth Edition, Text Revision”, best known as the DSM-IV-TR says this:

Individuals with this Cluster B Personality Disorder in their actions regularly disregard and violate the rights of others. These behaviors may be aggressive or destructive and may involve breaking laws or rules, deceit or theft.

Diagnostic criteria for 301.7 Antisocial Personality Disorder

There is a pervasive pattern of disregard for and violation of the rights of others occurring since age 15 years, as indicated by three (or more) of the following:

1) failure to conform to social norms with respect to lawful behaviors as indicated by repeatedly performing acts that are grounds for arrest

(2) deceitfulness, as indicated by repeated lying, use of aliases, or conning others for personal profit or pleasure

(3) impulsivity or failure to plan ahead

(4) irritability and aggressiveness, as indicated by repeated physical fights or assaults

(5) reckless disregard for safety of self or others

(6) consistent irresponsibility, as indicated by repeated failure to sustain consistent work behavior or honor financial obligations

(7) lack of remorse, as indicated by being indifferent to or rationalizing having hurt, mistreated, or stolen from another

Diagnostic criteria for 301.81 Narcissistic Personality Disorder

A pervasive pattern of grandiosity (in fantasy or behavior), need for admiration, and lack of empathy, beginning by early adulthood and present in a variety of contexts, as indicated by five (or more) of the following:

(1) has a grandiose sense of self-importance (e.g., exaggerates achievements and talents, expects to be recognized as superior without commensurate achievements)

(2) is preoccupied with fantasies of unlimited success, power, brilliance, beauty, or ideal love

(3) believes that he or she is “special” and unique and can only be understood by, or should associate with, other special or high-status people (or institutions)

(4) requires excessive admiration

(5) has a sense of entitlement, i.e., unreasonable expectations of especially favorable treatment or automatic compliance with his or her expectations

(6) is interpersonally exploitative, i.e., takes advantage of others to achieve his or her own ends

(7) lacks empathy: is unwilling to recognize or identify with the feelings and needs of others

(8) is often envious of others or believes that others are envious of him or her

(9) shows arrogant, haughty behaviors or attitudes

If you think I mean to apply these attributes to Obama, you’re right. I’ve consistently referred to him as a “narcissistic, sociopathic sock puppet”. Apparently I’m out of fashion amongst the psychologically-correct, it seems he’s a “narcissistic, antisocial sock puppet” nowadays… mine sounds better and I’m going to keep on taking literary license and use it.

I and many others (especially at NoQuarter) have made something of a second career out of lambasting, deriding and skewering Obama about his lack of affect, his self-reverential sermonizing, his cowardly self-glorification, his tendency to treat his ‘friends’ like used condoms once he’s gotten whatever he wanted from them and his baseline con-man mendacity.

Feels good to be right when everyone else was wrong, doesn’t it? It’s nice to see the new respect in your friends’ eyes and hear it in their voices, tacit acknowledgement that they know they were wrong and you were right. It’s good when people come up to you shaking their heads and saying: “Man, you called it!”

Not getting those righteous kudos? those apologies for not listening to you? those accolades to your perceptive good judgment? …yeah, me neither…

In fact a curious phenomenon has shown up. I keep getting into mini-confrontations with people who were committed Obamabots all through last year’s political fracas.
These confrontations frequently take the form of a continuing debate, as though the other person were responding to an accusation or criticism they think I made about Obama. It’s like they’re having an internal debate with ‘me’ and, having scripted ‘my’ lines for me, they are now answering the script. I’m not instigating these rants or encouraging them, they are sui generis but it’s been enlightening and, in a small way, reflects what I see going on in the larger political and cultural world.

All this fall there has been a steady stream of bewildered, shell-shocked media flacks and so-called ‘netroots’ types wandering in out of the wilderness with stricken looks on their faces, trying to reconcile their messiah fantasy with ugly reality.

Some of them (very, very few) now get it – they understand that they were made fools of by a cynical machine politician – yes, I know, that really isn’t ‘getting’ it but it’s as close to reality as they’re ever going to manage.

Some of them are saddened that, in this day and age, even the greatest of men cannot strike the fetters of our bondage to the past – whatever that means.

Some of them ‘see’ that the entrenched opposition is implacable in its determination to destroy ‘the work’ and prevent Obama from attaining the goals he spoke of so eloquently for us, do you remember the speech where he… [blah, blah ,blah]

Many times this takes the form of the ‘reverse rant’: they’ll pick a current topic, like Sarah Palin’s book tour, and start off with a spittle-flecked indictment of SP’s stupidity, incompetence, mendacity, etc., etc. and then segue into a sequential cri de coeur about Obama’s failure to do “X” or “Y” ending with a blame-a-thon that begins with vast conspiracies and usually narrows down to ‘right wingnuts” or ‘redneck racists’ or both, with the subtext that I must be one of them because I thought that Obama was an incompetent sociopath with fascist tendencies back in 2007 and said so.

A lot of them can’t do it, they were so ‘in the tank’ for Obama that they will cast about for anyone, anyone, else to blame, I saw an impromptu panel on ‘Morning Joe’ (Dec.31, 2009) including: Tom Brokaw, Donny Deutsch, Harold Ford, Jr., David Gregory, Arianna Huffington, Norah O’Donnell, Jon Meacham and Tweety. All these worthies came to the sage conclusion that ‘white racism’ was responsible for Obama’s problems.

‘White racism’ apparently gave all our money to the banksters, reinvigorated the Afghan war, forced us to create a health-’care’ bill without the ‘care’ part and has been running a bowing and scraping “America Apologizes’ tour all over the globe. ‘White racists’ also, it seems, determined that the terrorist defense network did/did not work, that we will/will not close Gitmo, can/cannot wind down the Afghan war, will/will not limit bankster bonuses. ‘White racists’ demanded that Nebraska be exempt from Medicare payments, that women be exempted from Medicare (or any other ‘-care’) benefits, that LBGT folks are second class citizens after all.

Pretty powerful, these ‘white racists’…excuse me: the ‘bitter people, clinging to their guns and religion’ (have to get my euphemisms straight here).

The thing is: a year on, Obama is a known quantity. For good or for ill he has defined himself by his actions (and inactions) in his first year in power. No one, now, can claim ignorance or hide from the truth.

The fact that we knew it a long time ago and shouted it from the rooftops doesn’t change the ugly reality that he’s firmly in power now. Which brings us face to face with the larger question: what’s the problem?

The answer is: Obama is not the problem – we are.

Obama is a Narcissistic Personality Disorder, and that’s a professional opinion. It’s not a “diagnosis” because I’d have to see him professionally to do that. But watching him for the past two years is sufficient for me to render a professional opinion [and as a retired mental health counselor, I have the expertise and education to do that]. However, whether or not he has malignant features is another story entirely. And, of course, it should go without saying that there are many Narcissists in politics.

But, the issue for me now is, how will his NPD manifest in our lives, other than the spectacle of our President being so clearly a narcissist? Well, I just was reading about Venezuela’s Chavez, and the news that he’s devalued the currency by 50%–think about what that would mean to Americans if it happened here.

It could happen here, and sooner than you think.

    not WE

the OBOTS and all of those weak minded fools looking for a CORRECTION from the last 8 yrs.  So blind with rage over the W cabal that pretty much ANYONE with a D could have won (except Hillary of course cuz they all hated her long before she ran) makes me wonder what the excuses would have been if John Edwards were Pretzeldent right now?  or Chris Dodd? Turns out the HYPOCRITE party is no more ABLE  than their mirror image pals on the other side!  I was only a fool for as long as I stayed a DONKEY.  NO more.

I don’t think I’ve enjoyed any analysis more than this post. Thank you so much, Craig, for laying it all out for even the most craven Obamabot to absorb.

As for being part of the problem I’m willing to accept my share of the blame – as long as I can be judged by the same criteria as That One.

  • Guest

The liberals over at Kos are saying that this criteria fits Sarah Palin to a tee as well. She’s the one who wants to be on tv after all.

Thanks, Craig – always glad to hear your opinions. And thank you mountainaires for pointing out that opinions here and abroad have concrete consequences.
I can’t help but think that a “Jimmy Carter” type weak President will not engender confidence in foreign investors investing here. If we don’t have tight financial regulations of the type being put in place by other countries, I’m not sure I’d want to invest here either, knowing we have let our banks play casino-like with us taking all the risks.
This is completely Obama’s fault. Even the most ardent ‘bots agree that his financial team is made up of the guys who created the mess.

  • Hokma

I found this post to be very interesting and I would agree with all the comments preceding mine. To add to “Guest’s” addition of Palin I would say that probably all politicians fall into this criteria – it’s just a matter of how well they convince us that they are not Narcissists makes the difference.

I would add that what convinced Americans about Obama was an excellent brand marketing campaign, the likes of which we never saw before in politics. We live in a brand society and base most decisions on what brands we prefer. A great campaign will convince people to try a brand one time, but unless the brand proves to be consistent with the campaign promise then consumers won’t buy it again.

Having lived with a person who exemplified NPD for 18 years, half of which time I spent just trying to figure out how to get out of my situation, I know how hard it is for others to see these people for what they are.  Heck, I married the guy.

I spent several of the first years of our marriage questioning where I went wrong, what I didn’t get, how my thinking must be messed up, etc. because I just didn’t always think he was right in his thinking.    It was a long road from questioning myself to trusting my reactions to his total self-absorption and lack of empathy for anyone.  It enfuriated me when everyone on the outside of the marriage who saw him only occasionally and dealt with him sporadically couldn’t see him for what he was.  People with NPD can be absolutely charming in small doses.

I am, I think, an American woman raised in the public schools when our Constitution was still taught and our history was glorified and our values of hard work and trust in the equality of all were emphasized.  I just took for granted that he thought the same way I did.

That, is what might be wrong with the Americans as they fumble through their confusion over their choice for POTUS.

Perhaps the only reason I saw through Obama immediately was that I had intimate relations with someone like him for a long time.  My NPD radar detector kept buzzing loudly.

There was an old song sung by different artists over time, “The Snake.”  One line goes like this, after the woman takes in the snake and saves its life, though the snake bites her for her efforts:

    “Aww shut up, silly woman.”
Said the reptile with a grin.
“You knew damn well I was a snake
    before you took me in.”

I made darned sure I would never take in a snake again as long as I lived.  I can control who comes into my house, but I was made angry and frustrated over the fact that I couldn’t control who other people let into my White House.

Excellent analysis, as usual, Craig.  But you don’t have to be a psychologist to peg Barack.  Just an astute observer.  It was his
way of walking up on a stage–a swagger–the flash of self-importance in gloating eyes.  All that prelude to launching into his usual scripted, populist campaign/TV spiels.

Are immature people born or made?  (The old nuture vs. nature issue.)
And that is the basis, IMO, for most sociopathic antics.  Unless they
have an organic mental disorder, these men and women can be judged for their actions.

There was an insightful book written in 1964 called “An Infinity of Mirrors”
by Richard Condon (author of “The Manchurian Candidate” and other remarkable novels).  In the end, the protagonist must admit he has become what he despises most–a man bereft of his humanity; he has sought revenge against the NAZI monsters and in realizing that goal,
    has forfeited his own soul.

Art is so often prescient, bolstering our comprehension of the human condition.

Perhaps Obama is another fictive character in an ongoing political drama.  Some usurping character will upstage him.  And wouldn’t that be ironic?

  • Ani

Well done, Craig.  We are the problem — well, not “we” cause we knew this stuff.  But the other we — the friends and family we and pundit we who refused to listen to logic, reason, common sense –you name it.

    Great piece.

  • ChooChooMagoo

    Very interesting Craig!!
I’ve have heard a few of those reverse rants.

“I’m also frequently startled to find that personality traits and behaviors that seem transparently obvious to me are obscure or invisible to folks I would usually consider perceptive.”

Tell us about it! How did so many swallow b.s. that was SO OBVIOUS to all of us? And so many people we considered perceptive … why did they swallow this b.s.? Honestly, I think that he’s the first non-white president was a lot of it. And that he followed Dubya was also a lot of it. It was a perfect storm for his b.s. to bypass most perceptive peoples’ b.s. detectors.

     “narcissistic, antisocial sock puppet”
    *******
I don’t buy the “sock puppet” part.  Obama uses people for his personal and political goals.  He advances the Insurance, Bankster, etc, agena for the simple reason; that’s where the money was/is.  I quarantee, if the Drug Companies, Health Insurance companies, etc. had not played their assigned roles in passing “Historic” legislation; Obama would have made it very unpleasant for them.

  • catfsh

I too know somebody who is N.P.D. though to her credit, she is capable of empathy. But she can be crazy-making, changing little facts all over the place so you exhaust yourself trying to iron out these little wrinkles of lies. That must be what Obama does to his inner-circle – he inflicts his crazy-making little lies on them, they constantly question themselves and exhaust themselves trying to prove the green door is in fact green not red.

Obama seems to have a debilitating empathy deficit – he cannot see how much people hate this health insurance expansion bill and he’s having to ask all these incumbant Democrats to not run for re-election. Yet he soldiers on, offering to “help” other Dem incumbents campaign, not realizing these Dems’ poll numbers are sagging because of the health insurance bailout bill.

  • catfsh

“I spent several of the first years of our marriage questioning where I went wrong, what I didn’t get, how my thinking must be messed up, etc. because I just didn’t always think he was right in his thinking.    It was a long road from questioning myself to trusting my reactions to his total self-absorption and lack of empathy for anyone.”

Imagine if you had a YouTube record of everything your N.P.D. friend said. Would have saved you a few years.

  • Ferd Berfle

Damn fine essay Craig. You’ve hit the ball out of the park with this one. Thanks for stating in words what I’ve felt ever since I first saw that flimflam man.

  • Ferd Berfle

My ex was disgnosed as an NPD. I tried for 10 years but gave it up when I started to think I was crazy and maybe she was sane. These people really are sociopaths (as stated by Craig) and I stay as far away from them as I can.

  • tango

As does Obama. At least Sarah Palin hasn’t (but I’m sure the Bots say give her time) done a spot for George Lopez or had her spouse appear on The Food Networks Iron Chef.  Maybe if Todd Palin does, he can present the secret ingredient - Alaskan Moose!

  • Clara

Great piece and interesting read.  Thank you, Craig.  Out of that bunch of docs in the Doctors for America group, wonder how many are psychiatrists?  Can’t imagine one actually supporting The ‘teched’ One.

  • Patience

Thank you for this essay Craig.  For me, it’s easy to see the POTUS is a narcissistic personality.  What I don’t understand is why some people bitterly cling to The Myth.

I can understand an unwillingness to admit to faulty judgement, or a reluctance to admit having been duped.  I can understand partisanship.  I can understand white guilt.  But is that all that’s at play?

What I fear is that we live in an age where fiction has become all-too comforting, and that some people are so enured to vicarious pleasure and virtual reality that what’s true and real is just too boring or unpleasant for them to countenance.  They want, maybe even need fairy tales.

What do psychologists have to say about people who fall prey to narcissists?
