Boston Herald endorses Scott Brown for Senate [Update]

“Throughout this campaign Brown has been underrated – and often overlooked, even by his chief opponent. But he’s savvy and committed and he’s desperately needed in Washington. The voters of Massachusetts can put him there.”
    - The Boston Herald

UPDATE: Check out Politico’s detailed account of tonight’s debate: “Final debate marks Massachusetts stretch run.”

First, I want to share with you that I’ve been listening to the John Batchelor show. John had people watching tonight’s debate between Democratic candidate Martha Coakley and the Republican’s Scott Brown. Their take was that Brown was the clear winner on issues of national security, and that Coakley seemed weak and uninformed. Now, here’s the Boston Herald endorsement:

Massachusetts voters have to ask themselves a serious question before they head to the polls next week: Are they content with the current state of affairs in Washington?

Are they content with a sweeping health care bill, now being negotiated behind closed doors by principals from only one political party? (So much for a new era of bipartisanship promised by our president.)

And are they prepared for the impact that bill will have on the health care industry in our own state, where we already insure 97 percent of our population?

Are they prepared for the devastating impact of $500 billion in Medicare cuts, both on our citizens and on our hospitals?

But there is far more that is going wrong these days in D.C. than just the health care fight. There has been a similar rush to “fight global warming” with policies that would tax us back to the Stone Age.

[I]f you’re not happy with the status quo, if you think the way business is being conducted on Capitol Hill today is a disgrace and an affront to taxpayers, then you probably agree it’s time for a change.

Scott Brown can single-handedly deliver on that kind of change and the Herald is pleased to endorse his candidacy in the race for U.S. Senate.

There was that $787 billion “stimulus” bill that didn’t stimulate much of anything unless you count sending the unemployment rate to 10 percent. Oh, but it sure did “stimulate” the federal deficit, which hit a record $1.4 trillion.

Well, the voters of this state have the power to change that next week. Sometimes one vote can make a difference – especially if it’s one vote on the floor of the U.S. Senate.

If you love what’s going on in Washington, well, then by all means vote for Martha Coakley. She’s a perfectly nice person, and she won’t make a dime’s worth of difference in the balance of power in Washington.

But if you’re not happy with the status quo, if you think the way business is being conducted on Capitol Hill today is a disgrace and an affront to taxpayers, then you probably agree it’s time for a change.

Scott Brown can single-handedly deliver on that kind of change and the Herald is pleased to endorse his candidacy in the race for U.S. Senate.

Brown talks about being the “41st senator,” adding to Republican ranks and depriving Democrats of the “supermajority” which has allowed them to ride roughshod over the nation’s agenda. But he would go to Washington as his own man – and as ours, beholden to no one, except Massachusetts voters.

Brown is a social moderate in the Weld/Cellucci tradition, who considers Roe vs. Wade “settled law.”

And as a lieutenant colonel in the National Guard’s Judge Advocate General’s Corps, Brown has a unique perspective on critical military issues and issues related to the war on terror.

As a state senator Brown has shown his ability to work across the aisle for things he believes in. He cites his efforts to help pass a crucial stem-cell research bill “because I knew it meant jobs for Massachusetts.”

And while Brown is a solid fiscal conservative, he is a compassionate conservative, voting to override gubernatorial vetoes and restore funding for breast cancer screening, suicide prevention programs and the METCO program.

“My record speaks for itself,” he added. “If it helps people and creates jobs, I’m for it.”

Throughout this campaign Brown has been underrated – and often overlooked, even by his chief opponent. But he’s savvy and committed and he’s desperately needed in Washington. The voters of Massachusetts can put him there.

If he wins, getting him sworn-in before the Stealthcare Bill is passed will be the problem. We do have Hope for a Change.

  • Docelder

Good for them. The people of Massachusetts have the chance to really be heard and to have an actual voice in their senate representation for the first time in nearly 50 years. The Herald nailed it. The people of Massachusetts can stay their hand and be led and fed like a flock of sheep, or step up and demand change. Not “hope and change” but actual change as in send the bums packing change.

I mentioned on Amy’s thread that Scott Brown’s donations are going through the roof.  He raised over a million dollars today.  And the debate tonight?  I’ve caught some of the vid. The man was good, really good.

Tell me the world hasn’t tilted when the Massachusetts Senate race is a horse race?  Weren’t we just celebrating Coakley’s primary win?

This is all about healthcare and the growing rage in the country.  The disconnect with DC is profound.  Kinda reminds me of that Verizon commercial:

    Can you hear me now???

  • AnnieCarmel

I sent him a donation this morning.  His Money Bomb brought in $1.2 million today.  Go Scott Go!

  • cynthia

The legal voters of Mass need to be aware of illegal voters being bused in by Acorn and/or SEIU to cheat the votes for their candidate.  This was done in the general elections and important as this seat is in the senate  I would not put anything past the democrats to cheat this election too.

  • sowsear

I hope whoever’s in charge is getting that special place in hell enlarged for the next batch of corrupt politicians.

  • Peggy Sue

Coakley just put up her first negative ad.  What’s the line of attack?  Linking Scott Brown to George Bush.  In lockstep.

This is from the supposed frontrunner.

The Dems are sweating bullets.  They know she took a hit with tonight’s debate.  This is going to get ugly.

  • Docelder

George Bush… LMAO. They will never get it. Bush isn’t the enemy, they are their own worst enemies right now.

  • Jackie

WOW, what a shock!  A RIGHT-WING RAG ENDORSES A REPUBLICAN!!!

  • tango

Negative Ad – Coakley comparing Brown to a President who has been out of office for over a year or Brown pointing out that Coakely voted for that clusterf*ck of a health care bill… Hmmmm, which one really is going to carry more negative weight at this time of high unemployment, increased taxes and fear about the cost of medical care or loss of Medicare or private insurance benifits if this idea of “reform” gets enacted?

  • Kathy in CA

Comparing someone or blaming something on Bush is getting old very fast.  Besides, it demonstrates that the current leaders in the House and Senate do not have the leadership skills needed to move forward.  Pushing their agenda when the public does not like it is not leadership, it’s a dictatorship.

  • Fredster

Yeah, that was a big surprise wasn’t it!  (snark!)

It seems this blog, which seemed to start left/neutral and was aghast at what happened to the Dem party has shifted right.

I won’t be surprised when Dick (toe-sucker) Morris and Hannity start to be quoted here.

  • Jackie

Sad to say, they get quoted favorably here all the time.

  • Mark

If Brown wins this will be huge.  A year ago the arrogant Democrat party and Obama were thumbing their noses at us, knocking us, and getting more mileage with the guilty white theme by ridiculing white people when they protested at the tea parties.  Ethnic whites are finally figuring out that they are better off in the Republican party than the radical party which hates white people and only seeks to dump more guilt on them in an effort to manipulate and use them.  Once whites figure out that if they take the millstone of guilt off their necks they are free.  This is the last thing Obama and the libs want to see happen.

  • buzzlatte

Exactly!  The dems are fiddling while “Rome” burns!   *DONT_KNOW*

  • Jim S

I got an email from someone on her team trying to claim that Palin was going to get involved on his behalf and blah, blah, blah.

Palin, according to the Brown camp hasn’t contacted Brown nor he her.

He got my $200 this afternoon.

  • Jim S

It’s still pretty much left/neutral but the hard left have moved on after realizing we weren’t going to drink the Øbama kool-aid.

Brown lost the election last night…

Brown, Coakley and Kennedy square off in final debate
    By John J. Monahan

When Ms. Coakley said Mr. Brown filed an amendment to the state’s emergency contraception law to allow hospitals to refuse to provide that treatment to rape victims, Mr. Brown said that amendment would have allowed hospitals with “religious preferences” to not perform abortions or “those services.” When she asked specifically whether he meant emergency contraception services, he responded, “I’m not a defendant, I’d like to answer the question.”

Mr. Brown said that amendment was supported “by many people” and that he later supported the overall bill making emergency contraception available at hospitals. He said he supported the Roe v. Wade ruling that legalized abortion.

Check out Allen West for Congress down in Florida. He’s a black conservative & a Lt Col. ret.  At this point in time I’m backing every fiscal conservative who’s running.  I’m taxed enough already!!! Don’t want a 96% hike in my electric bills, a 40% hike in my gas bills, etc. The progs have trashed the Democratic party, it’s no longer the party of JFK & Bobbie, it’s been turned too far to the left with Keynesian madness & commie concepts. It’s become a money hungry monster. Raising cap gains tax in a great recession is beyond stupid & will only result in less revenue for the government & more debt for us. When the guv starts imdemnifying my loses maybe I’ll warm up to their new found love of “fairness.” If we can avoid a complete economic melt down in the next 2 years it’ll be a miracle. As for Scott Brown, I favor him over Martha Coakley but not by much. Don’t like the insurance mandate no matter who proposes it.

If someone speaks the truth they should be quoted. And please, get over the “toe-sucker” bit. It sounds very juvenile.

I find Dick Morris and Karl Rove to both be less than admirable human beings. I don’t like either one of them or do I like Sean Hannity. That’s not necessary. I find their ability to see which way the political winds are blowing as useful. Both have political smarts that few others can match.

I don’t watch or quote Hannity because mostly I find him an asshat. However if he speaks the truth, why wouldn’t someone quote him? The truth doesn’t belong to either party. In fact the truth wouldn’t be a home in either party.

Partisanship keeps us at each other’s throats instead of going after the real culprits, the asshats in office that disregard the will of the people.

  • Beachnan

Yes, most of us lean left to middle, but want more our government to be more fiscally responsible.  Can’t stand Hannity or Rush, but I agree with kenoshamarge, even they are sometimes correct in their assessment of something.  The problem with obamabots is they haven’t stopped swilling the koolaid, and can’t see the Democratic Party is no longer democratic.

From what I have seen, Mr Brown sounds like a good choice for the people of MA.  He is not a always “Right” republican.  He is conservative as compared to the norms of MA.  In other states, he would be considered liberal.  Sounds like a good rep for MA and a good contribution to the country.
