Elitist Coakley Takes a Shot at Fenway Park Fans
By Bronwyn's Harbor on January 14, 2010 at 3:15 AM in Current Affairs
As we’ve seen in John Batchelor’s and my posts in the past few days, Martha Coakley has suddenly found herself in a tight race that she’d assumed was hers for the taking. But, as Batchelor wrote, the latest Rasmussen polls shows her in a dead heat, 49-47. Now she sticks her foot in her mouth, insulting Fenway Park fans and becoming the talk of Boston’s sports radio listeners. The “spirit of Lexington and Concord” are coming alive, says WSJ’s John Fund (more from Fund below). Writes William Jacobson, a professor of law at Cornell at his blog, Le·gal In·sur·rec·tion:
The Massachusetts special election continues to amaze. Democratic candidate Martha Coakley has taken a swipe at Fenway Park fans:
Coakley bristles at the suggestion that, with so little time left, in an election with such high stakes, she is being too passive.
“As opposed to standing outside Fenway Park? In the cold? Shaking hands?’’ she fires back, in an apparent reference to a Brown online video of him doing just that.
Well yes, politicians go out to meet the voters even if it means standing out in the cold. At least politicians who want to win in Massachusetts.
Here is the video of Scott Brown greeting fans outside Fenway Park at the Winter Classic hockey game (and being greeted by Boston comedy legend Lenny Clarke):
Coakley’s slap shot at Fenway fans was the talk of the popular local Howie Carr radio show in Boston today. Carr is a Brown supporter, and Coakley’s refusal to greet the fans outside Fenway was a focus of the show.
Maybe Coakley forgot how near and dear Fenway was to Ted Kennedy, who threw out the first pitch last season in what everyone knew would be his last opening day. Or the Tribute to Kennedy in August at Fenway.
Insulting Fenway fans. Now that’s a plan.
Notes Jacobson, “In order for Brown to win, a lot of things had to fall into place. Just saying.”
No kidding. Not only has Coakley hung her hat on the highly unpopular health care plan, but she has Democratic party operatives already openly plotting how they can delay Scott Brown’s confirmation to the Senate until he can’t vote on Obamacare. Then she goes to a D.C. fundraiser hosted by the largest pharmaceutical and health insurance companies, taking their checks, instead of campaigning back home. And now she’s insulted Fenway Park fans by stating she wouldn’t think of standing out in the cold to try to get their votes.
Scott Brown has the “big mo” going his way. And Coakley is making it easier and easier for him. He’s still a long shot in the Democratic state, and the Democrats are in high panic mode, even planning to send in SEIU thugs, by the busload, to monitor the voting and … some might say … perhaps find a way to cast a vote even if they’re not legal Massachusetts voters.
For more on the rumor about SEIU, and other delicious details, check out the MP3 of John Batchelor’s information-rich interview of John Fund on January 12th. This interview is so great that I was tempted to try to transcribe it for you. But just listen. The first part of the MP3 is about Haiti, but keep listening, or fast-forward to the spot shown in the image below.:
Do listen. You won’t regret it. And it’ll give you reason for optimism. John Fund of the WSJ has been following the Massachusetts special election closely, and his insights and insiders’ knowledge are fascinating. Included are the reasons why David Gergen asked Scott Brown why he didn’t want to honor Ted Kennedy’s Senate seat. The answer in short form? Money. Gergen’s employer gets an earmark out of the Obamacare bill.
