Obama’s Bin Laden Whopper

How did Barack Obama turn a fabricated story into a well-played race card during the primaries?

Obama has been playing race card politics in this campaign for a long time, principally against Hillary Clinton. To be precise, he plays race baiting card politics, accusing others falsely of playing the race card against him.

Back in January, when Obama was posing as the victim of present and past acts of racial attacks he happened to mention a dramatic incident from his 2004 U.S. Senate campaign. Here’s the CNN report:

WASHINGTON (AP) — Sen. Barack Obama doesn’t think name recognition is necessarily a plus as he seeks the Democratic Party presidential nomination in 2008.

“When your name is Barack Obama, you’re always an underdog in political races,” the Illinois Democrat said Wednesday.

Appearing on CNN, Obama said that when he was running for the Senate, “there was an image of me superimposed over a picture of (al Qaeda leader Osama) bin Laden. I think people like to play with my name.”

Pretty awful, Obama’s face morphed into Osama bin Laden’s. Unfortunately, there’s a problem with Obama’s account. It never happened. At least it didn’t happen to him. It did happen to then Senator Max Cleland, Democrat of Georgia, Vietnam War hero, in a vicious TV commercial put on the air by his Republican opponent.

This particular smear was pioneered earlier in 2004 in the Democratic presidential primary campaign against Howard Dean. He was the first person to watch his face morphed into Bin Laden’s. Who would engage in such a nasty, underhanded dirty trick? Karl Rove? Nope. Guess again. The perpetrator of this smear tactic was none other than Robert Gibbs, who just happens to be Obama’s communications director. Read the Chicago Tribune report:

“Obama’s communications director and one of his closest advisers was once employed by a group that ran a television ad shortly before the 2004 Iowa caucuses that used a picture of bin Laden to criticize Dean’s foreign policy credentials at a point when Dean was the Democratic front-runner.”

“At the time, Robert Gibbs was working with a shadowy group called Americans for Jobs, Health Care & Progressive Values. The so-called 527 political group paid for the ad but refused to disclose in a timely manner who was financing the effort because federal law did not require it to do so.”

Let’s get this straight: Obama told Democratic voters he had been smeared in 2004 in a way that never happened to him. But the one who invented the smear was someone he decided was so clever he hired him as his communications director. Then, through innuendo, Obama subtly suggested by inference that Hillary might use that tactic against him in the primaries, or smear him in similar ways. That in itself was a smear.

You’ve got to hand it to Obama. He got away smearing Bill Clinton and Hillary Clinton as racists while playing the race card and the victim card himself. And nobody has yet to catch up to all the lies.

    Obama’s lies have been out there in many forms, most of which aren’t difficult to uncover, but no one wants the truth to come out. Too much money invested in the puppet.

      I am firmly convinced Barry and/or some of his Ministry of Propaganda types have read Mein Kampf and related tracts.

      One of the things you will see in such material is the concept of The Big Lie as well as the public’s incredible forgetfulness.

      That is why, combined with the race/victim card play and the cheeky smile, Obama has been able to ‘reconfigure’ his positions nearly daily and yet not get called on it by a pliant press.

      However, the McCain camp, the GOP, PUMAs and others are waking people up from the trance Obama and the MSM has been putting them in.

      The masses are coming around to The Fraudulence of Obama. Moment by moment, the game this charlatan has been running is coming closer to its conclusion.

      He is going to lose, and the fallout will be gigantic.

      Just as it should be.

          I wasn’t sure he was going to lose until about a day or two ago.

          Now, I am almost certain.

          There is still a lot to do, don’t get me wrong. It’s not going to happen of itself.

          But the trends and narratives are there now for him to lose. the Anti-Obama coalition is tightening, more information seems prepared to come out about him and the GOP is fully engaged now.

          The PUMAs aren’t going to Obama, either.

          Taken together, I don’t see how Obama can win. He and his team are going to go very negative on McCain (much down surreptitiously, I’m sure; just ask Jack Ryan or one of Obama’s 2004 Democratic primary challengers), that is for sure. But I think that it will not be enough.

          Obama is going to lose. Keep working and prepare for that glorious day. It is on its way.

            The Obama Crew ARE afraid though–it’s evident. It’s why they are here, being way more obnoxious than usual–that’s not what “winners” do.

            They’re going to let the 527s do some dirty work, where before Obama said he wanted everything done through the campaign. I’d call that a flip flop. I posted an article about it downthread.

            The smart reporter will look for connections and planning/interface between the 527 groups and the campaign, to show “coordination” where none should exist, FEC-wise.

            I don’t think there are any “glorious” days ahead, unless the Democratic Party comes to its senses and nominates Senator Clinton.

            Otherwise, it’ll be four years of the Ancient Mariner…and if he decides that he doesn’t care if he doesn’t get reelected, and does his job as if it is a one-term run, I suspect he’ll say Fuck The Fundies and truly govern from the center. He’d really have my respect if he did that….and ironically, he’d probably be renominated by acclaim and reelected in a landslide, too.

Obama’s back into his usual 2-to-5 point lead in Rasmussen, Gallup and AP, and the state by state polls are even more favorable. This is exactly what happened repeatedly in the primaries: Hillary would hit him with everything she had — or rather, her surrogates would — and he’d slip in the polls for a couple days, then bounce back up.

          No. The claim Jesse has made is that he was on the balcony and MLK died in his arms. When in fact Jesse hid when the shots rang out. Coming back later to smear MLKs blood on his shirt and exploit it for his own benefit on tv the next morning.

          For those of us who remember. MLKs widow Coretta used to insult Jesse for years and deny his importance in MLKs organization by calling him just a bodyguard.

          Obviously, double the insult because Jesse not only failed to protect MLK but ran and hid to save himself. She softened her tune to Jesse at the end. However, I still remember her disgust in Jesse and his false position as the torch bearer of her husband.

          Q: What I don’t understand is why Abernathy and those who were there didn’t jump up and scream, “Slow down! That ain’t the way it went down.”

          A: That’s a legitimate question, and I don’t have a clear answer for it. All I can tell you, from what I understood, is Abernathy was too much of a gentleman and did not want to confront …

          Q: He paid a price for that.

          A: He did. But he did not want to confront Jackson openly. He felt it would divide the leadership of the civil-rights movement at that time. He let Jesse do his thing up in Chicago, figuring, I suppose, that it wouldn’t harm what Abernathy was doing down in Atlanta.

            Jesse was in shock, not acting entirely clear headed, and people tried to cast his actions negatively as well, hoping to further rift the movement.

            When people are in shock they don’t always act coherently.

            MLK Jr. took a bullet for union workers, the right to earn living wages and work with honor and dignity. No person should have lower stations than that of dignity in life.

            When churches were bombed or people were shot the movement did not stop before then either. Why should one person’s passing stop it? You act like he should have stopped too.

            More could be said about the events surrounding that, but it is enough at this time.

      Even better than the first one. If there’s anything Obama can’t handle it’s being made fun of or mocked. His lame attempt to use the same tactic in an ad attack on Mac fell flat because it had no humor whatsoever. It managed to take the “celebrity” factor and make it serious. Wrong!

        It seems that this lack of humor may be a true Achilles’ heel for Obama and his supporters. Humor works and has proven effective in several McCain ads. The more faux outrage, the more the “story” or gag moves forward to prove BO is a thin-skinned, Mr. Fussy.

        Robust debate, humor, satire, parody are all credible tools of political elections. They’re not always kind but they’re certainly part of the landscape. And people remember the good ones.

        Obama would like to stick to the canned speeches, where his vacuous but metered words are praised widely and turned into adoring chants.

In the beginning, people like Joe Scarboro even remarked on “really respecting Obama”. Wierd, huh? These people know all the stuff we hear, they knew about Rev. Wright a year before it happened, they knew about the John Edward’s affair. My thoughts have been all along that after the convention the press will turn on Obama.
    Can you imagine… the same networks that sold us the war, selling us Obama…. not really, just setting us Dems up for a big loss. Making sure Hillary is out of the way first.

    What you said is dead-on: Nobody has caught up to all of the lies. Yet. The GOP is getting closer as they track down the ‘celeb,’ race-card-playing Barry. They are getting close to boxing him in, totally. And it’s about time.

    When confronted about the McCain camp saying, in essence, that Barry is arrogant, Obama actually had the gall to say that he didn’t know how people would get that impression. Mr “Presidents don’t give political speeches” actually said that.

    What this means is that Barry’s crap — like this false Obama/Osama play you pointed out here, or the JFK airlift lie — has to be methodically and systematically tracked down and called on his lies. All of them. And when you try to call him on them, he will try to label you a racist.

    He knows the game he’s playing and the factors in his favor, like the victim card.

    However, the GOP and people such as yourself are slowly but surely reeling in this total fraud and liar. None too soon, either.

    Obama is in the process of being exposed. He is going to lose the election if he is nominated. It appears as though he and all his ploys will be completely laid bare as the election moves forward.

    Obama had one shot at this, and it is coming apart as we speak. He will never sneak up on anyone or be able to run the same shell game he has in the future. When this is all over, people will know much, much more about him and will never fall for the smile or the con again.

    That President will not be Barack Hussein Obama. Not only because he doesn’t fit that terminology, but because he is not fit to lead this nation — or anything — and he is not going to be elected.

    For months, many of us have worried about his being elected. I know I, personally, wasn’t sure if people would wise-up to the reality of his fraudulence and many weren’t sure if the GOP and the McCain team could get the job done.

    Those fears have been allayed. The right wing is getting it done and so are real Democrats who have seen their party hijacked by a fraud and his accomplices.

    That is, the Anti-Barack Coalition (ABC) is growing and solidifying. Not only do I think Barack is going to lose the election if nominated, I’m starting to think McCain has a real chance to electorally crush him.

    Finally, a nation of people is rejecting Obama’s cynical race card games and is doing what Americans have always traditionally done: Rebuking tyrants, would-be overlords and people who intensely dislike our country. This isn’t 1930′s Europe and we don’t do personality cults, particularly ones led by associates of domestic terrorists and anti-American pastors.

      My hunch is McCain is going to win in a landslide. I cannot see any other result come November. BO is tanking, as the electorate is waking up. They’re tired of him, yet they know nothing about him due to the collapse (or complicity) of our now dead fourth estate. There is nothing Axelrod can do to bring up the one’s numbers – the Europe tour failed, and unless he chooses HRC, his vp pick won’t help either. And I sure as hell hope he does not tap her.

      He’s going down, and I am thrilled to see it happen to him, his campaign and more so to those nasty supporters who always resort to name calling rather. It couldn’t be happening to a better group of people.

        His entire candidacy, as I think Dick Morris recently said, is a ‘bubble’ on. That is, maintaining a lead and insinuating inevitability and infallibility.

    Yep, Gibbs left Kerry’s campaign with the pledge to “take out Howard Dean” with former Gephardt guy, too. They received money from a host of folks, that were also supporting other candidates, like Mr. Slim Fast. I remember that well.

    After they were successful, Gibbs went to work for Obama in the Senate (obviously preparing for Presidential race, because in Feb 2005, major Fundraisers were already being contacted for Obama.

    Based on the last few days, we can say the race game is on for this election cycle. I think we all know why they don’t want a roll call in Denver; they might not like the results. Even if Hillary 35% or 51%; we’ve done it this way for how long now? I think obarky is worried at just the chance she pulls a 50.1% and he’s smacked down for telling us to get over it. Plus I’m starting to believe we’ll put a damper on him with either enough non votes and swing votes to mccain. Either way we win. I can wait for 2012, don’t think I can stand 4 years of him.

    Republican operatives, with help from their own island backers, have unearthed critical information on Obama and are just biding their time until after the convention to drop it on him. Such as? Having a birth certificate that lists you as Barry Soetoro.

    Incredible! Ann Dunham met her second husband, Lolo Soetoro in 1966, in Hawaii. “Barry” Obama was, at this time, five years old. The only reasonable explanation is that Dunham and Soetoro built (or purchased) a Genesis Device to clone a new son, using DNA from Barack Obama Sr. that Dunham had pulled off one of his combs.

    Seriously. The “evidence” for Johnson’s claim is the now-familiar murmurings of “sources” and GOP “operatives” (who appear in these things quicker than agents of H.Y.D.R.A.) and the fact—not reported in too many places, but never disputed—that when Lolo Soetoro became his adoptive father, the young Barack was enrolled in school as “Barack Soetoro.”

    But was there anything at all odd about that as it concerns a candidate for president? Bill Clinton was William Blythe III until he turned 14 and his mother married Roger Clinton.       I do not believe Hillary would win this election now.
      Remember that Dean won’t disappear nor will Donna nor will Pelosi until after it is too late. This round needs to go to the Rep’s while the rest of our House-cleaning gets done.
      Reconciliation can only take place after we pop a few boils and clean away some of the rot that has hit the nation.
      Some politicians are smart enough to have not gotten awash in corrupt schemes for their states and they can become a new base from which to demand a clean government.
      A lot has to happen before America is going to trust the Democratic Party after this train wreck. Hillary is better off not getting any of this stink on her..

    McCain was in Arkansas this week. He’s asking for Reagan Democrats and Clinton Democrats to vote for him. Barack was nowhere to be seen.

    He hasn’t even opened a campaign office in Arkansas. A DNC or DLC-er says that he might later this month!

    I guess Barack didn’t agree with Howie’s 50 state strategy. Must be why he hired the guy who Dean into Osama.

    I keep wanting to believe that Americans are better and smarter than Obama gives us credit for… but then again, we (as Americans) “elected” Bush for two terms and many seem to think that this sham of a man that wants to be POTUS is worthy of the post…

    IMHO, he thinks we are all fools, and that he can lie and manipulate his way into the most powerful position in the world with limited experience and dubious connections.

    Heck, if we elected Bush with his experience and connections, we will elect anybody…

    I have faith that Americans will wake up. We do not need worse than Bush III. We are not living in a time for hopey dopey blind faith. Russia, Iran and Venezuela and other world issues are going to be pressing on us in the next year. Who do we trust to guide us through those murky waters?

    The time to stop being manipulated by the illusion of popular mass is now. Hold your ground and believe in your gut feelings. The tactics to make you think that you are wrong are pure manipulation.

      There is one major difference, we knew shrubs history, his parents were in the WH for 12 years and his father was CIA director etc. – a strong history of public service under the scrutiny of the entire world. The right-wing felt safe voting for shrub, although he wasn’t up to snuff for office, since his daddy was a known factor. There was no doubt daddy and cheney would be there to tutor the man-child-fool-puppet.

      Gore was by far the better candidate and would have made a better President and had proven himself as VP to Bill for 8 years. Bill delegated power to his VP and Al did a remarkable job. The right-wing put that blue dress far above the level of importance in the big picture it deserved. Al ran from Bill (some say Donna made him do it)and that betrayal cost him votes.

      Gore accomplished and served admirably in that role as he had in TN, and he too was a known factor. The meme that year was “it doesn’t matter all pols are the same” and even though that is a big old fairy tale, people bought it. It DID matter. Gore was infinitely better suited for the job and would have continued the giant strides of progress towards peace and prosperity.

      So what happened? The media hoodwinked and bamboozled the republican base into defining LIBERAL as a curse word and convinced people Gore was no Bill Clinton.

      Gore did come off wooden and wasn’t very charismatic, and that did not help his case. The “tax and spend liberal” attacks – despite the evidence he would be fiscally responsible and was actually a very important part of the economically brilliant Clinton recovery years – was the label they threw at him which stuck.

      But let’s not forget – Gore won in 00.

      We will also not forget – Hillary won in 08.

      The powers that be at the RNC AND the DNC and the media manipulators, crown our party leaders according to their own agendas which is often against the best interest of our country.

      Hind sight is less important than foresight, but experience is the best teacher. We’ve been around this block many times and know the territory.

      We were PUMAs before we came together and had a name for it. We have been battle scarred and learned our lessons the hard way. Dubya had a far more stable history so when his vetting took place, the dirt was pooh-poohed and minimalized. And ob’s dirt makes dubya seem like a boy scout in comparison.

    Senator Barack Obama will start looking the other way when it comes to the role 527s and other independent groups play in the election, a source close to his campaign told the Huffington Post.

    The implicit acknowledgment that outside organizations have a role to play signifies a marked contrast from Obama’s longstanding policy that electoral efforts be funneled through his campaign. A spokesman for Obama, Bill Burton, denied that any policy vis-à-vis 527s — political organizations that can raise unlimited soft money — and other outside groups had changed.

    “Whoever is saying that has no idea what is going on inside our campaign,” he said. “Senator Obama has said consistently that if folks want to help this effort, they should do so through our campaign.”

    But on Monday two reports surfaced suggesting that a softening of Obama’s stance may already be taking place. Earlier in the day, Politico’s Ben Smith wrote that PowerPAC, a 501c4 that was initiating voter registration efforts primarily in the South and West, was planning to spend $10 million during the election. In the afternoon, FireDogLake’s Jane Hamsher reported that “a source close to the Obama campaign,” acknowledged their position on independent expenditures was changing.

    “Despite actively discouraging donors from giving to groups like Progressive Media at one point, they are now taking the position that it’s nothing they have any control over,” Hamsher wrote.

    What effect contributions such outside groups could have on the election at this point remains to be seen. Anything organic would likely take weeks if not months to organize and finance. As such, advertising efforts from 527s likely aren’t in the works due to budgetary restrictions. But grassroots efforts, especially if overseen by already established organizations like SEIU or ACORN, could yield important results…..

    Isn’t that just SO CUTE? “Looking the other way!!!” It’s a CUTE way of saying FLIPFLOPPING!!!

Every bit of political analysis that goes on on blogs like this turns out to have no connection to reality. If you really take political analysis seriously, write down predictions about the election (A will cause B to a certain degree), and if they don’t come true, admit to yourself and to all of us that you’re not good at political analysis. And don’t pretend that what goes on here is discussion or debate. Its spectator sport to relieve you from thinking about the shitty things in your lives and its venting to make yourselves feel good about a race that you’re losing. Either get out there and campaign for McCain or get back to work doing whatever it is you do for a living. You’re only alive for a short time. People get cancer everyday. You could die tomorrow. Are you really going to spend these precious moments tearing down someone who really won’t be that different for the country than any other president? (what about the high taxes? It won’t f-ing matter b/c the congress will be primarily democrats and you’ll get taxed by any president b/c our economy will be shitty no matter who wins).

    Look at the electoral map on realclearpolitics. Yes, they’re a dead heat in the popular vote, but that DOESN’T MATTER AT ALL. Try to invent a scenario in which McCain would win enough states to win the election. He’d have to take almost ALL of the toss-up states. He has gotten no closer to this goal since his ads started running, since Rev. Wright, since bittergate, since you started blogging and commenting. There have been no trends. Just a bunch of blips that last the 24 hour news cycle and keep people like you hooked on sites like this (look! We’re winning! the tide is turning!). Don’t get all defensive about this and keep wasting your time just to prove people like me wrong. Please stop wasting your time on this election and get back to work. Life is short.
